FAQS
1. Can kids playing football or soccer still sign up for wrestling?
Yes, we know seasons overlap. Have the kids make the practices they can until football and soccer ends.

2. Where can I get wrestling shoes?
Guys and Dolls, G.I. Joe’s. We also have a shoe exchange where kids donate good shoes they have outgrown.

3. What do kids where to practice?
Sweats, t-shirts, wrestling shoes or socks - no street shoes. Singlets and head gear will be given out later

4. What is a challenge match?
Challenge matches are matches between kids in their respective age and weight classes to determine a Varsity/J.V. line up. Kids that are not on Varsity or J.V. will all get the chance to wrestle in an exhibition match.

5. What is a round robin tournament?
A round robin is a tournament where 4 kids are put into a group. They will wrestle each opponent once getting three matches with no eliminations.

6. What is an official weigh-in vs. non official?
Official weigh-in is at league sanctioned events. All duel matches and round robin’s count. Holiday tournaments are not official weigh-ins. It becomes important at the end of the season when post season tournaments start. You must have 3 official weigh-ins at your weight class.

7. What if I miss a challenge practice?
We need to have all wrestlers at practice for their challenge matches. If you are not there, we can try to get you a challenge match but their are no guarantees. Please inform coaches if you are not going to be there.

Additional information:
1. All wrestlers will be grouped by age, weight and ability to the best of our ability for practices and matches.
2. Wrestlers who do not make Varsity or J.V. will get to wrestle in exhibition matches, in round robin tournaments and at the Rising Star Tournament on December 29th.
3. Varsity and J.V. wrestlers will qualify for the sub division tournament at end of the season. The top 4 at subs will qualify for the division tournament and top 4 from division qualify for the league tournament.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT A ROUND ROBIN TOURNAMENT

Hi everyone! Now that the season has started we will be preparing the wrestlers for their first tournament. It will be a round robin tournament hosted by Vashon Island.

The tournament will have a weigh-in from 7-9AM. The wrestlers will need to be wearing a singlet to step on the scales. They will check skin and fingernails. Please trim them close. You will be filling out a card with your wrestler’s name, age and years of experience. Once the weigh in is completed the coaches will then have the wrestlers cards and proceed to put them into groups of 4 doing their best to match up age, weight and experience. The way the age cut off is determined is your age on Jan 1. If you turn 9 on Dec 31 you will be in the 9 and over category.

Once this is complete the host will announce for certain age and weight groups to go to the staging area. It would be a good idea to know where this is in advance. Once in the staging area they will be grouped and sent to the mat to wrestle. Make sure they have their wrestling shoes, singlet and headgear on when going to staging. Usually the mats are sectioned off to accommodate 6 to 8 matches at a time. They will be numbered but it will be random as to where they wrestle. The tournament usually starts with the age 8 and under and then the 9 and over. Starting with the lower weights and progressing up.

Once the first round of wrestling (all ages and weights) has concluded, the second round will begin. There will be 3 rounds total, giving your wrestler 3 matches. Because the numbers don’t always add up your wrestler may receive a bye. This happens when there is a number not divisible by 4. We do the best we can to avoid this but it sometimes happens.

Once you have completed your match in the 3rd round you are free to go or stay and watch some of your fellow teammates. The tournaments usually end around 3pm. It is quite an experience!

Some of the things that I recommend are to show up early to weigh in without feeding your hungry wrestler. The reason for this is to have them at their lightest and then get them fed with time to digest. We do not promote dieting! The other thing is to bring some healthy snacks and possibly lunch. There will be concessions at the event if you want to eat there.
