SUMNER PANTHER WRESTLING HANDBOOK
SUMNER PANTHER WRESTLING HANDBOOK
2008-2009
SUMNER PANTHER JUNIOR WRESTLING
MEMBERSHIP HANDBOOK
Welcome
First and foremost, welcome to the Sumner Panther Junior Wrestling Club! Your family is now part of a successful and proud organization of the Sumner/Bonney Lake community and your participation helps continue the tradition. This handbook will help answer your many questions regarding the organization, how we operate, and the upcoming 2008-2009 season. Again, on behalf of the “Panthers”… Welcome!
The focus of this organization is to comply with our mission statement:
“Build an outstanding youth program which inspires wrestling excellence, fostering an atmosphere of respect and sportsmanship while having fun”
In this regard, a main objective is to provide each child in our program with the opportunity to participate in a fun team sport while learning new skills and gaining a clear understanding of the sport of wrestling. Youth wrestling is a sport that all participants benefit from because unlike many other team sports, wrestling includes every participant. No one sits on the bench and no wrestlers are “cut” from the team. Our club
objectives also include:
*Make wrestling a fun learning experience for everyone involved; child and parent.
*Teach the fundamentals of wrestling with an emphasis on individual improvement regardless of experience or skill level.
*Teach the value of sportsmanship including the showing of respect for referees, coaches, parents, and fellow athletes while learning how to win with grace and lose with dignity. *Use the sport of wrestling as a vehicle for teaching life long lessons like the value of hard work, the ability to handle adversity, and the importance of a positive mental attitude.
Panther Operations
Sumner Panthers is a member of the Pierce County Junior Wrestling League. All of our funds are obtained through registration fees, donations, and fund raising activities ( such as concessions). We host several matches and tournaments each year, which generate revenue for our clubs operation. Our generated revenue allows us to avoid the traditional candy sales, car washes etc. This organization and its operation are run solely by volunteers! In this regard, parent involvement is vital to our continued success. Your cooperation will be appreciated as we will be “volunteering” you for various duties throughout the season.
If parents or participants have any concerns regarding the program, please immediately voice your concerns to the Club Director, Kirk Corbaley (253)862-7671
If you feel that your concerns have not been met, please contact the Director of Recreation, Rebecca Giles, at (253) 891-6500 (office hours are Monday through Friday between 8:00a.m. and 5:00p.m.)
WHAT IS WRESTLING
The purpose of wrestling is to pin your opponents shoulders to the mat for a given period of time (2 seconds). If this is not accomplished in the three periods (8 and under 3 periods of 1 minute, 9 and over 90 seconds, 1 minute, 1 minute), a winner is determined by a point system. These points are awarded when a wrestler improves their position such as taking their opponent to the mat, escapes, reverses their position to an advantage, or almost pins their opponent. The points awarded for these moves are:
1. Takedown: 2 points , Wrestler takes their opponent from a neutral position ( on their feet) to a position of advantage on the mat (on top).
2. Escape: 1 point, Breaking free from opponent’s control to a neutral position.
3. Reversal: 2 points, Changing a wrestler’s position from being controlled ( on bottom) to a position of advantage (on top).
4. Near Fall: 2 or 3 points, Almost pinning an opponent, shoulders at a 45-degree angle or less for 2-4 seconds or 5+ seconds.
5. Penalty or stalling: 1or 2 points, Any infraction of the rules or failure to wrestle for a pin.
The above points are scored only to determine a winner if there is no pin (fall).
Team points in dual matches are awarded as follows:
Pin- injury default- forfeit 6pts
Technical Fall (15+ point win) 5 pts
Major Decision (8-14 point win) 4 pts
Decision (1-7 point win) 3 pts
No Tie 2 pts
What are the styles of wrestling?
There are many wrestling styles found around the world but all have virtually the same objective: to take the opponent from his feet to the ground, turn them over (or to throw them on their back), and to hold their shoulders down. Three types of wrestling are recognized in the US including Collegiate, Freestyle, and Greco- Roman. We will be teaching the Collegiate style that has the same rules as used in our local jr. and sr. high schools. This style emphasizes taking an opponent down and controlling them on the mat. Freestyle and GrecoRoman are the two international styles which are used in the Olympics. Freestyle is similar to collegiate although it places less emphasis on control and more on turning the opponents back toward the mat. Greco-Roman prohibits grasping the opponent’s legs or using the legs to trip or hold the opponent.
PRACTICES
Parents are asked to have their wrestlers properly dressed and ready to help roll out the mat before practice. Also, your help in rolling up the mats after practice is always appreciated.
Please bring a water bottle for your child.
Practices are on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday (8 & Under from 5:30-7:00pm and 9 & Over from 6:30-8:00pm) Practices will be cancelled on holidays or school closures due to weather conditions. We will have a few practices during winter break but the dates and times are still to be determined.
What to wear
Sweats, gym shorts or a wrestling singlet are all appropriate. Footwear includes wrestling shoes (no tennis shoes on mats) and they must be clean. Please only wear them while on the mat or in they gym. Headgear is required at league events and at practices. Kneepads are optional but again will add to comfort. A team singlet will be provided for use during
competition.
A t-shirt is included in the cost of registration for each wrestler.
We also have team sweats available for purchase. This is an optional purchase although strongly suggested for warm-ups and team uniformity.
We recommend Guys and Dolls on South Hill, Puyallup. They have the best selection as well as prices.
We will have a “shoe swap” during the first week of practice. Wrestlers can bring in their old shoes for donation and /or exchange.
Be sure to label all sweats and headgear- with 80+ kids, it is easy to accidentally pick up the wrong gear. The club is not responsible for lost items.
Birth Certificates
Copies of birth certificates for any new wrestlers must be submitted to the Club Director prior to November 1st. Wrestlers will not be allowed to wrestle in competitions if these have not been turned in.
To obtain a copy of your child’s birth certificate you may contact:
Tacoma-Pierce Co Washington Vital Records Office 3629 South D Street
Tacoma, WA 98408
(253) 798-6418
Singlet Deposits
The Panther Wrestling team supplies singlets for a $25.00 deposit (please make check out to Panther Wrestling Club). This deposit is given back to you at the end of the season when you return the loaned item.
Weight Classes
Our league and program is based on age and weight. The kids are separated by age and then grouped by weight classes as follows:
Ages 8 and under: 45lbs ,50 ,54 ,58 ,63 , 69, 78, 90, UNL (110 Max)
Ages 9 and over: 55lbs, 60, 63, 66, 69, 73, 77, 81, 86, 91, 100, 110, 120, 145, UNL (175 Max).
What are challenge nights?
Challenges are inter-squad matches set up to determine the rankings of wrestlers in a particular weight class. The purpose of this is to determine what individuals will be ranked as the Varsity, JV and Exhibition wrestlers.
How is the pecking order predetermined prior to challenges?
The ranking of a particular weight class is predetermined first of all by the experience and
performance of a wrestler’s prior season. Also, the assessment of the coaches during the first 2-3 weeks of practice will determine a wrestler’s ranking in a particular weight class (where there is no prior documentation).
When are challenge nights?
Challenges are going to be on Monday and Tuesday nights only. Thursdays will only be used as a challenge night if required. Parents must be present for a wrestler to challenge.
How do challenge matches work and what is the process?
Wrestlers must attend the designated challenge nights in order to wrestle at either JV or Varsity for that weekend’s match. If you miss the challenge night, you forfeit for that week. A challenge match will consist of three 1-minute rounds (1 ½ minutes for the 1st round) for 9 and over and three 1-minute rounds for 8 and under. Each challenge match needs two wrestlers, a scorer, a timer and an official. The pecking order for challenges will go as follows: The lowest ranked wrestler in a weight class challenges first. For example, the number 3 ranked wrestler would challenge the JV wrestler, which is the number 2 seed. Whoever wins that match will
then challenge the Varsity wrestler, who is the number 1 ranked wrestler in that weight class. Challenges are sequential from low to high and wrestlers may continue to challenge up the ladder, as long as they keep winning. There will be NO deviation from these rules. Any unusual circumstances that may arise during the week will by dealt with at the discretion of the Challenge Coordinator or Club Director. Wrestlers must be prepared to wrestle at 6:00pm sharp. When called for a challenge, wrestlers must have wrestling attire on and be ready to go. Wrestler may have to wrestle several matches and must be prepared to wrestle another match every twenty minutes as necessary. The wrestler must be courteous to the official, scorer, timer and their opponent (unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated). The wrestler must shake hands at the beginning of each match and after the match is over. Wrestlers not competing in challenge matches must be resting up for the next challenge, preparing for the next challenge match or participating in the wrestling
practice. Wrestlers are not allowed to cheer for or against any wrestler, including family members. Parents are allowed to watch the match but not allowed to coach or make any comments to the wrestler. Wrestlers are not allowed to congregate along the challenge match area to watch challenge matches all night long.
What if my child does not make Varsity or JV position?
Whether your child secures a Varsity or JV position is not important. Your child will get plenty of wrestling this season with all the tournaments and dual meets available. The important issue is that each wrestler will gain valuable experience in the sport of wrestling and will have fun while doing it.
What is qualifying weigh-ins?
The Pierce County Jr. Wrestling League requires each wrestler to have three weigh-ins in order to qualify for the Subdivision tournament. These weigh-ins must be attained at 3 of the five round robin/dual meets that we have this season. At the round robin/dual meets, a weigh-in only counts if the wrestler is in the Varsity or JV positions. Parents, it is strongly advised that your child gets as many qualifying weigh-ins at these designated meets. Keep in mind that all other events do not count towards a qualifying weigh-in. It is also important to remember this: if a wrestler has not achieved an adequate number of weigh-ins prior to the last few dual meets he/she will not be allowed to challenge for JV or Varsity. The purpose for this is to not steal ‘seeding’ points away from a JV or Varsity wrestler, especially since the lower ranked wrestler does not have enough weigh-ins to qualify for post season tournaments.
Wrestler responsibilities
1. To arrive at practices and matches at the scheduled time.
2. To bring the proper equipment to each practice and match.
3. To treat their teammates and coaches with respect.
4. To tell the coach if they will miss a match or practice.
5. Have good sportsmanship whether winning or losing.
6. Work hard and have fun.
Parent’s responsibilities
1. To provide transportation to and from all practices and meets ensuring prompt arrival and departure.
2. Stay and watch matches and lend wrestlers your support in a positive manner.
3. Do not coach from the sidelines, that is what the coach is for.
4. Ensure child brings equipment to and from all matches and meets
5. Be positive, never criticize. Suggest an alternative way if they are not performing correctly.
6. Disagreements with the coach or officials do not belong on the wrestling mat. If you have a concern, talk to the coach away from your child and the team.
7. Help the coaches during practice- you are welcome and encouraged to come out on the mat.
8. Volunteer to help with our home meets and tournaments.
9. Wrestling is a challenging sport- be supportive.
WHAT I WISH I KNEW IN OUR FIRST YEAR
OF WRESTLING
If this is your first year on a wrestling team, realize the first time in any sport is an adventure. Stay flexible and don’t be afraid to ask questions; most people are more than willing to answer your questions. The way things are done may seem strange, be patient, watch and learn and you’ll be a pro by the end of the season. In the meantime this is offered for your information:
1. “Meet” is one team competing against another.
2. “Match” is one wrestler competing against another. Generally, your more experienced wrestlers will earn Varsity positions.
3. All Varsity and JV wrestlers are weighed in at meets and all wrestlers are weighed for tournaments.
4. You don’t want to feed or water your wrestler before weighing in. They can eat after their weigh-in. This way they don’t miss their weight by a “Big Mac” at the last minute.
5. Each wrestler is placed in a weight class by their actual weight. Height is not the deciding factor.
6. Wrestlers are weighed in their singlets ( with no shoes or socks ) at all weigh-ins.
7. At no time should a wrestler go out on the mat for a match without a coach present.
8. Meets usually begin on time with exhibition rounds first, then JV, followed by Varsity. Varsity matches are usually solo on the mats. Some teams wrestle the exhibition between the JV and Varsity.
9. Help is always needed setting up and putting things away. Just ask what you can do, this helps getting things started on time and everyone gets to go home faster.
10. JV and Varsity matches have referees and scoring. Exhibition is usually refereed by coaches.
11. Meets usually last approximately 4 hours.
12. Tournaments involve many teams with each wrestler taking part in two to three matches.
13. Tournaments usually start late and last up to 8 hours or more.
14. There is usually a $2.00 admission fee per person for most meets and tournaments.
15. Eating facilities are usually provided and most teams run a concession stand with both breakfast and lunch items available.
16. Label your wrestler’s clothing. This cannot be stressed enough times.
The idea, and 99% of the above, was suggested by a wrestler’s mother who wanted first year parents to have an idea of what to expect at a tournament or meet. Having an idea of what an all day adventure your first wrestling tournament will be like can help you prepare for it.
Remember, have fun and cheer your wrestler on. The rest will take care of itself and you’ll forget how long a day you spent sitting on bleachers watching the kids wrestle their hearts out.
PANTHER WRESTLING CODE OF CONDUCT
WRESTLERS CODE:
1. If I am sick or have any type of skin lesion, I will stay home. We don’t want ll of our wrestlers getting sick. This is a close contact sport; therefore viruses of any kind are easy to spread.
2. I will keep my nails cut.
3. Absolutely no horse play will be allowed on the Panther Wrestling team.
4. We are a team sport. I will always portray good sportsmanship.
5. I will pay attention at practices. I agree to follow coaches instructions and understand that there is no talking when the coach is speaking.
6. I understand that I must be at two practices a week to be eligible to wrestle as either JV or Varsity for the dual meet for that particular week.
7. I understand that if I have a problem or disagreement with a team member, I am to go to the coach immediately for resolution. Fighting or making fun of a team member will not be tolerated.
8. I understand that appropriate discipline for my behavior will be enforced at the coaches’ discretion. If the behavior continues, I will be dismissed from practice.
9. I understand that I am not to run, hit, climb on walls or bleachers, go under the bleachers or leave the assigned sitting area during tournaments unless it is with a parent’s permission.
PARENTS CODE:
1. I will restrain myself at all practices and tournaments from openly criticizing the coaches and referees when I don’t agree with their decisions or calls. I will always portray good sportsmanship.
2. I will obey all school rules, including the no tolerance of alcohol or tobacco on school grounds. I will park in designated areas only.
3. I will not drop my wrestler off without prior contact with a coach or the director. I will never drop off a child that is not properly registered as a Panther Wrestling participant.
4. I will make sure that my wrestler’s nails are trimmed and will not take them to practice if they are sick or have any skin lesions.
