Palma Ceia Little League: Welcome
Mission - In a safe and park-like setting, provide baseball and softball instruction to young athletes; teaching the importance of winning the game while, at the same time, building character, instilling sportsmanship, and providing a forum to learn valuable life lessons; and allowing volunteers to contribute to the community in important and meaningful ways.
Monday, November 2
The league is blessed with thoughtful volunteers and a surging number of players. We have grown in numbers over the years and I think it’s a testament to our commitment to quality programs and an exceptional park experience. We have expanded the board of directors from 18 to 21 members, and all your directors remain committed, yet it always seems that something extra could be done to make the park even better.
Plans for an outstanding spring season are in the works. Heading in to the season, we’re looking for greater parent/member involvement to support the park in an expanded committee system. We’re asking that you consider working with a director in a specific area of park operations. For example, the league VP is responsible for the operation of the 1) lights, 2) sound system, 3) scoreboards, and 4) locks & keys. We are looking to identify members who can serve on a committee and work with John Carter to take on the responsibility of managing and improving these specific operational tasks. This is just one aspect of park operations we’re looking for help with – below is a complete list of what we need:
Facilities Committee – John Carter, Vice President
· Light Czar – operate and manage light system. It’s pretty sophisticated – it has a phone and web interface.
· Sound Czar – operate and maintain the sound system. It’s pretty sophisticated as well – it allows for MP3 player playback from each field, as well as overall delivery of sound from our Windows 2003 server.
· Scoreboard Czar – operate and maintain the new scoreboards. We’ve undergone a major upgrade in this area and need help maximizing our return on this investment. The power to the scoreboards is tied to the light system controller.
· Key Master – maintain and distribute keys. We need someone to help us secure the park and ensure that managers are issued appropriate keys. Other leagues lock their fields for security purposes and we’d like to consider this, but need to make sure we don’t lock out our members without providing them with keys.
Finance Committee – Scott Leslie, Treasurer
The league is committed to sound financial practices to ensure funds are best utilized to achieve our mission. We’re looking for folks to assist the treasurer in further formalizing budgeting and financial procedures.
Umpire/Rules Committee – Cheri Dukett, Chief Umpire
As you likely know, the league employs paid umpires for Minor A, Majors, and Juniors; and we’re seeking to use volunteer umpires (Junior League players) in the Minor B divisions. We’re looking for help in coordinating the volunteer effort in the Minor B division.
Registration Committee – Joe Wiendl, Registration/Information Officer
Getting the word out about registration is a big job. We’re looking for a team to assist in distribution of yard signs and promotion of registration in local schools. Committee members will have behind-the-scenes experience with our registration/info system and help with onsite registration.
Safety Committee – Donna Wishart, Safety Officer
Maintaining a safe playing environment is a top priority of the board. We would like to identify Safety Officers in each playing division to assist in making PCLL the safest place possible for our children to experience the game. We want to improve safety awareness and audit the fences and screens used at the park.
Historical Committee – Greg Jones, Historian
The league has a rich history. You may know that our clubhouse was burned down in an arson attack in 1999 – click here for more info. We lost a lot of Fair Oaks and PCLL awards in the fire. Since then, we’ve been fortunate to have a number of championship teams and our trophy case is overflowing. We’re looking for someone to help organize the awards and possibly even provide advice on the décor in the upstairs of the clubhouse. The Historian is also responsible for the annual league picture day, and we’re looking for some help coordinating this.
Advertising & Sponsorships – JC Dominquez, Chair
The league offers a number of opportunities for families and companies to support the league. Team sponsorships (name of back of uniform), typically the responsibility of the teams to secure, are used to off-set the cost of the team uniforms; outfield fence/scoreboard advertising income is used to support overall park operations. We’re looking for help in coordinating these important efforts and expanding the advertising program.
Grounds Committee – Bernard Cockrell, Chair
This important committee is responsible for the condition of the clay and turf and is a great source of pride for our league. The City of Tampa plays no role in maintaining our playing fields (they do provide services in the common areas), and all of the field maintenance is performed by volunteers. We would like to identify members who can assist Bernard with the overall management of the grounds, coordinate work days, and serve as field captains (responsible for specific fields).
Volunteer Committee – Ruth Lynch, Chair
This all-inclusive, if-it-doesn’t-fit-anywhere-else committee is charged with ensuring there are enough volunteers to get everything else done. Specifically, this committee coordinates the team coordinators (aka team moms) and organizes opening day and closing ceremonies. Ruth is looking for help with making opening day 2010 a really memorable experience (surprises disclosed to committee members only).
Communications Committee – Steve Stanford, Chair
The league uses a number of tools to communicate with its volunteers, members, and players – websites hosted at pcll.org and pcll.info (currently serving different functions), email generated from database, and a FaceBook page. These efforts need to be coordinated and expanded to include web-based game and practice scheduling, automated notification of schedule changes and rainouts. I am looking for web- and social-network-savvy members to assist me with improving current communication methods and identifying new opportunities.
To sign up for any of these committees, please use the link below and the committee chair will contact you with further information and to set a meeting time.
