2001 Pa Hockey Scholastic Showcase - Medal Round
Medal Round - Bethel Park vs Upper St Clair.

Two weeks ago Bethel Park defeated USC 2-0 in what have been a turning point of the season for both clubs. Upper St Clair has played very well ever since.

Bethel Park coach Jim McVay use this game as a wake up call for his Blackhawks.
You see, the Blackhawks measured themselves against no other team in Western Pa, which makes them a special team. A team that is never satisfied with nothing less than constant improvement of their own performance.

The barometer was a reengagement with Warren Young's Panthers. Bethel Park as they always seem to do secured the lead when C.J. Strauss wristed one by David Andrews to make it 1-0. Upper St. Clair picked it up at this point and turned agressive and seemed to be carrying the play.

Sometimes agressiveness leads to mistakes and the Bethel Park Blckhawks are the Land of Opportunity when it comes to capitalizing on other teams miscues. Brandon
Hanley picked a great time to score his first tournament goal (after seven assists)
at 4:51. Then 45 seconds later, Lee Volensky found an opening and beat Andrews and all of the sudden it was 3-0 at the end of one period.

Bethel rolled in the second as Tony Sands, the 2001 version of Brian Trottier, whistled a wrist shot past the USC goaltender to up the ante to 4-0. Power play goals by Starkey and Strauss late in the second made it 6-0 and the Blackhawks were on their way to their 3rd straight Director's Cup final.

C.J. Strauss got the hat trick at 8:40 of the third period and Delbert Joo stopped all 14 shots he faced as the Bethel Machine kept it rolling into the Director's Cup finals with a 7-0 victory.

Semi Finals

The Mt Lebanon Blue Devils have been to the medal round three years running and in the previous two years, they have lost to the eventual champions, Bethel Park last year and North Allegheny in 1999. Coach Paul Taibi's team came into this medal round with strong goaltending and balance across three lines.

Indiana reached the medal round after being edged in last years Showcase by Gateway in the preliminary round. The Indians were looking to prove to themselves that they can compete with the top teams in Western Pennsylvania, which is what the Showcase is all about !

In the first period, the Blue Devils go the apparant opening goal, but it was waved off, which was a break for the Indians. Indiana capitalized as Nicko Speilman tipped in a Bryan Schlemmer shot to give the upstart Indians a 1-0 advantage.

In the second period, Mike Lady continued his hot goaltending to keep the lead. His Indian teammate Zach Diamond scored at 10:06 of the period to give Indiana a 2-0 lead. The Blue Devils came back though as Chad Uddstrom scored on a power play set up by Mike Colligan and Jason Schulz.

On to the third and the Blue Devils kept pressuring and Lady continued stopping them. The big chance came when Clint Pizarchik of Indiana was whistled for hooking with 7 1/2 left in regulation.
The Blue Devils pelted Lady with many of their 16 shots in the third, but could not beat him and the game remained 2-1.

Then redemption, as Pizarchik picked up a loose puck and was in all alone on Colin Sebastian and beat the Mt Lebo goaltender to seal the victory for Indiana.
Mike Lady was outstanding stopping 34 out of 35 Blue Devil shots.
