2001 Pa Hockey Scholastic Showcase - Director's Cup
2001 Director's Cup Final ***GAME SUMMARY***
Director's Cup Final

The defending Director's Cup champion Bethel Park Blackhawks are on a roll, outscoring their first four opponents in the Scholastic Showcase 34-4. A dominating performance which I am sure Indiana coach Ron Hellen realized prior to the Indians taking to the ice in the gold medal game.

Indiana was coming of an impressive win over Mt Lebanon, which Mike Lady stood on his head to help the Indians advance to the final. The recipe for beating Bethel is
simple ... 1) a hot goaltender 2) no shot is a bad one 3) take no penalties and 4) watch out for the train because you may get run over when the Hawks are coming at you !

Well, Indiana started off well because Zach Diamond threw a puck at the Bethel net from behind the net and went off Matt Feige to give the Indians a 1-0 lead at 11:32. The Hawks kept coming and Lady stopped shot after shot of the 20-2 advantage in the first period. Finally, C.J. Strauss found the net for Bethel on the power play at 9:04 and the game was tied at 1-1.

In the second period a great individual effort by Nicko Speilman as he beat Delbert Joo on the far side to give Indiana the lead again. But the train was comin and the Hawks Lee Volensky jammed home a shot after a great move to tie the game at 2-2 less than a minute later.

The middle frame was pretty even and Bethel looked vulnerable as the shots in the period, but that's when they are most dangerous and Volensky banged home another rebound past Lady and Bethel had its first lead 3-2 at 3:07. Now it was Brandon Hanley's turn as the lanky Hawk forward scored a huge goal with less than two minutes remaining to extend the lead to 4-2.

The next goal would be huge, how would the Indians react being down two going to the third. They didn't even have time to thinks about it, because the train was comin in the form of Justin Glock, who took the opening faceoff pass from Volensky and blasted a shot past Lady to make it 5-2.

Lady was brilliant in the third as Bethel Park outshot Indiana 13-0 and added goals from Strauss and Steve Preite to capture their second consecutive Director's Cup as the 2001 Champions. Justin Glock, who led the tournament in scoring was a unanimous choice as tournament MVP and the first recipient of the R.J. Umberger award for his outstanding performance in the Showcase.
