Franklin Regional entered the Director's Cup final as the cardiac kids of the 2002 Scholastic Showcase winning two consecutive thrilling overtime victories over South Park and Gateway on their journey. Peters Twp on the other hand had almost quietly entered the finals until its matchup in the Semi-Finals with archrival Thomas Jefferson.

Peters Township had something to prove to itself and the rest of Western Pennsylvania as five of its regulars were elsewhere with their travel teams and did not participate in the Showcase. The important thing for the Indians was who was present as Brandon Rubeo and Mike Papciak had each combined for 16 points apiece in the first four games. So simple enough Mr Damp....stop Rubeo and Papciak.

And they did for the games first ten minutes ....and then it happened..... Papciak scored his 11th of the tournament at 4:50 to give Peters a 1-0 lead. Not to be outdone, it was Papciak again at 3:56 to give the Indians a 2-0 lead at 3:56.

Now to the history part......get that gold program out history buffs.....Markus Joinkenin [Westmont] and some guy named RJ Umberger [Plum] scored 12 goals in 1997.....well they were joined at 11:06 of the second at 11:06 by Mr Papciak, who completed the hat trick and Peters now led 3-0. Mike Roth got Franklin on the board at 7:41 and it looked like we had a game at 3-1.

You see coach Cooper hada copy of that book on the bench over there and showed Papciak that Umberger and Justin Glock [1999] had 19 points and that Mike was now tied with them for the single tournament record in points. So between 7:41 and 3:03 of the second, Peters got two goals from Kevin Kustron and one from Sean Mangan and all were assisted by # 31 [maybe he was mad that the program had him listed as # 70] Mike Papciak, who now had 6 points on the afternoon and 22 for the tournament and his team now led 6-1.

Jimmy Daugherty scored at 14:32 of the third for Franklin but Kyle Kittleberger made the saves when the Indians needed them and Papciak put an exclamation point on a 7 point afternoon and a 7-2 Director's Cup championship for the defending Pennsylvania Cup AA Champions.
