2007 Pa Hockey Scholastic Showcase - Director's Cup Final

2007 Director’s Cup Final

Bethel Park 5 Franklin Regional 2

DELMONT –

Franklin Regional and Bethel Park took different roads to advance to the 2007 Pa Hockey Scholastic Showcase Director’s Cup Final as both schools have played nine of the twelve years of the tournament. Both schools have a little different history in the event. Bethel Park is a two-time champion in 2000 and 2001 and has advanced to the Director’s Cup a record six times in nine years including and astonishing 8 times, with the exception being a year ago when the Hawks were ousted by Quaker Valley in the preliminary round.

The Panthers on the other hand have been to the Director’s Cup only in 2003, which happens to be the same year FR advanced to the Penguins Cup AAA final after defeating Bethel Park in the PC Semi-Finals at Rostraver. Franklin lost to Quaker Valley in the 2006 Pa Hockey Scholastic Showcase Semi-Finals in double overtime, so this squad was looking to take advantage of a rare trip to the finals. Franklin Regional was the aggressor early on and had several nice chances, but the Hawks Ben Garcia was equal to the task. At 9:46 of the opening period, BP’s Jared Marks long shot from the far boards found its way through the 5-hole of Anthony Livecchi to give the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead. It only took 38 seconds for the Panthers to answer as Patrick Coyne’s wrist shot beat Garcia low to the stick side at 9:08 to knot the game at one apiece. A heads up play by Bethel’s Chris Mandia just 19 seconds later gave Bethel Park the lead for good as he banked a shot off of Livecchi and behind him from below the goal line to give BP a 2-1 lead at 8:49. A very evenly played first period ended with the Hawks outshot FR 12-10. The second period was high tempo and a great skating defensive battle as Garcia and Livecchi stopped everything thrown at them as the Panthers owned the edge 9-7. The beauty of this hockey game was that it was clean with good checking and fast paced as a championship game should be. On to the third period and the games first penalty came at 12:06 to Bethel Park and Franklin capitalized as Jared Yesko found a wide Patrick Coyne shot off the back boards and deposited into an empty cage to tie the game with 11:49 to go. The Panthers had the momentum, but Bethel Park would answer with the big goal as Brennan Kerr back the FR defense in and used them as a screen and unleashed a shot that handcuffed Livecchi up hig and found its way behind him at 8:24 to give the Hawks a 3-2 lead. FR lost its composure and gave Bethel a power play less than a minute later and the Hawks made the Panthers pay as Chris Mandia, camped himself in front of Livecchi and re-directed a low shot by Zach Blake thru the Franklin goaltender with 7:06 to go and give BP a 4-2 lead. Tyler Trocano added an empty netter with under a minute to go, but the outcome was a Bethel Park Director’s Cup celebration with an impressive 5-2 victory over a very good Franklin Regional team.
