Pa Hockey Solution – Part 1 – Better Alignment and Competition – FOR ALL !
I have talked to many of you in the rinks about the potential for change in the PIHL and in April there will be a slate of people who run for the office of the Executive Board. I will NOT be one of those people nor am I interested in being in any paid position, but I am consulting with this group of people as to what needs to happen to FIX the 7-year mess created by the Villans. People who say I use Pa Hockey as a forum to bash the PIHL are very misinformed and those who characterize anything I write as a rant, don’t really understand either.

                   I will not go into a long dissertation about what’s wrong because everyone knows it, everyone complains about it and now its time to do something about it. I will not be releasing Part 2 of the Solution as that will be in the hands of the people who run for office and it has to do with one thing and that is saving people a lot of money and simplifying hockey to allow more kids to participate in hockey and potentially saving some of the programs that are dying in Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey. Remember one thing, there are NO promises and the people who are currently running the PIHL have had 7 years and have done a mediocre job at best because they are all about the money and NOT about providing a service to the member teams;

The Alignment Philosiphy is simple. 1) Return Interscholastic Hockey to Class AAA, AA and A + 2) create a long term solution to allow ALL pure scholastic programs to compete for the Penguins Cup and Pennsylvania High School Hockey Championship and 3) simplify the scheduling process and reduce travel.

Class AAA will be an Open Classification with the top 16 schools and schools must commit for a two (2) year period.
Class AA and A will be classified by enrollment and have a cut-off of 400 using PIAA Enrollment Numbers. Below is the proposed alignment for the 2007-2008 season (Please keep in mind this scenario takes into account Solution – Part 2):

Mark Madden Editorial March 2010

Guest Post -  Mark Madden

Besides Dejan Kovacevic, no one has been a bigger booster of area high school hockey than myself. So I feel I'm qualified when I say, much as I did on my radio program earlier this week, that this was a farcical, shameful episode that illustrated why VERY FEW PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY IN THE MEDIA, TAKE HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY SERIOUSLY. Nor should they.

Tonight's result compounds that. Certainly gloating over it is childish and shows that few are able to look at the big picture. The WPIAL made a basketball team play twice in one day to complete its schedule and preserve the integrity of its standings and playoff seedings. That's why WPIAL sports are viewed the way they are compared to hockey, which has always been run in haphazard fashion w/plenty of deal-making behind the scenes. The excuse that ice wasn't available is absurd. I was at two rinks last week, and all I saw was empty ice.

Plum got cheated. There's no other way to describe it. Shame on USC and State College for being directly complicit; shame on the PIHL for facilitating. Had the skate been on the other foot and USC, a favored son, been victimized, you can be damn sure that a Plum-State College game would have been played.

I'm told Ben Hanus was academically ineligible but might have been eligible next week. Even more reason to say Plum got cheated. Things like that are part and parcel of the advantage achieved by earning a bye.

Apologists for what happened will say that Plum, at home, lost to a #12 seed. Nonsense. You can't lose a game you don't play. Plum should not have had to play that game.

I will not be talking about the PIHL playoffs for their duration. I usually give them ample plugs, especially when the games go to Mellon Arena. If I attend games, I will pay to get in. I will not benefit from the largesse of a crooked organization. This incident has irreversibly tainted this year's playoffs. It is shameful and deceitful; anything unfair to kids always is.

The PIHL got lucky in one respect; the fiasco got underplayed in the media BECAUSE NO ONE CARES. If the WPIAL had pulled a stunt like this in, say, basketball, it would have been on the front page of the daily sports, not buried in the suburban editions.

After all these years...and attempted guidance from those who do, legitimately, know better...high school hockey simply doesn't get it. Such long-term stupidity is literally unbelievable. Think about it...the Penguins have unleashed a hockey boom in Pittsburgh: Ice hockey, street hockey and roller hockey programs are sold out. The sport's popularity actually rivals football in one of the nation's football capitals. And yet high school hockey is still small-time. Can't figure out a way to take advantage.

Wanna know why? Consider leadership that would allow this to happen.

This will be my only post, ever, on this board.

3rd Division Title in a row for NA
Now as everyone knows Pa Hockey is the noted historian of Western Pa Hockey, Eastern Pa Hockey and now doing duties Nationwide through the 'Wall of Champions' that tracks State Championship results from 44 states across the United States.
With all of that on the plate, we also track the Division Champions of Western Pa Hockey and have so since Interscholastic Hockey began here in Western Pa in 1971.

If you'll take a gander at the records attached, we have the Division Championships of every school from the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League, South Hills Interscholastic Hockey League and Lake Shore Hockey League prior to 1999, when the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League was formed. You can also find alot of the detail of your respective schools championships on Pa Hockey History at www.pahockey.org and in the Pa Hockey Yearbook, which will hit the streets soon !

Since our friends the Villans are busy with other activities other than handing out Division Championship Trophies, which are NOT given to the teams when they happen. We thought we'd give our 3000 visitors a week a heads up as to when this occurs. I hope thats not bashing our friends too much, cause they're a little sensitive about the subject.

We would like to congratulate the following schools for capturing their respective division titles:

    Class AAA
Bethel Park Blackhawks - For 6 out of the last 8 seasons, the South Division
title has resided in Bethel Park and resulted in 4 Pennsylvania State Class
AAA Championships under Jim McVay. The measuring stick for Class AAA hockey
in Pennsylvania is now Bethel Park !
Plum Mustangs ~ For the first time since 2002, Plum EARNS a Division Title and
will do so with a sub .500 record. Congrats to the Mustangs !
North Allegheny Tigers ~ NA captures a division title for the 3rd consecutive
year and their 5th in the past 8 years. Congrats to Jimmy Black and the
       Tigers!
McDowell Trojans ~ McDowell captured the Lake Shore Hockey League title 7
consecutive years from 1974 through 1980 and in 2007 captures their first
division title in 27 years edging out rival Meadville. Congratulations to
Head Coach Nels White and the Trojans.

    Class AA
Pine Richland Rams - Pine Richland wins their 3rd consectuive North title and
6th division title in 8 years and is set to defend their Pa State AA
championship. Congrats to Bobby Kennedy and the Rams !
Thomas Jefferson Jaguars - Thomas Jefferson wins its 3rd South Division crown
under the Dean of Class AA Don Powell. We would like to extend our congrats
         to the Jaguars !

WPIHL by edging Montour. Congratulations to Craig Bioni and the Moon Hockey
Club for ending a 30 year drought !

    Class A
Quaker Valley Quakers - The Quakers have won their 6th consecutive West
Division crown under Kevin Quinn and are set to defend their Class A State
       Crown
Conemaugh Valley Blue Jays - After 7 consecutive East Division Titles, Bishop
McCort's reign ends, but only because they were moved to the North
Division. Conemaugh Valley captures their first ever division championship
Congrats to the Blue Jays !
Freeport Yellow Jackets - Freeport wins their first ever Division title by
edging out Bishop McCort. Congratulations to Head Coach Dave Hepler and the

Concerned Citizens ...Brace yourselves....could this be the end ?

This logo may be a collector's item ?
Sources close to the Caped Crusader from outside of Gotham City northeast of Erie, Pa. and North of Mr Western NY have indicated if the negotiations with the Penguins go past February 15th, that the city of Pittsburgh may lose its professional hockey team. Once again, the State and Local Politicians have done a great job of cementing the exodus. Where is the common sense 'Concerned Citizens'? This professional hockey club has brought more publicity and goodwill to this city and almost rivals the Steelers, especially among people ages 10 - 40 !

Pa Hockey will continue, but will the Penguins Cup survive ? Will we call it [gulp], the Hornets Cup ? Wow, things could really change here people and maybe its time for public outrage ? I really wondered why the Penguins were in such a HUGE hurry to collect all of the playoff ticket money and at double the prices ? Will there be a refund or is this a stage coach holdup by a Berkle, before they ride out of town on their white horse to Kansas City ? Start singing people and follow the bouncing puck '

Goin' to Kansas City, Kansas City here I come
Goin' to Kansas City, Kansas City here I come
They got some crazy lil' women there,
And I'm gonna get me one.

I'm goin' be stand on the corner
Twelfth Street and Vine
I'm goin' be stand on the corner
Twelfth Street and Vine
With my Kansas City baby
And a bottle of Kansas City wine.

Well I might pick a train
I might pick a plane, but if I have to walk
I'm goin' just the same
Goin' to Kansas City, Kansas City here I come
They got some crazy lil' women there
And I'm gonna get me one

And one last thing, for my good friends the Villans, who collected nearly 70 High School jerseys to hang at Mellon Arena ? Hang on to them, because you can clean up the blood spilled on Mario Lemieux Place. Cause in this story, he has given too much blood and his team in this town is on life support !

Communism comes to Pittsburgh, but it’s already been here for 7 years since 2000!
When Evgeni Malkin fled his Russian team Magnitagorsk earlier this year, there was celebration in Pittsburgh in anticipation of the new season. Malkin, who reportedly signed a contract under duress at 3 AM, dreamed of playing in the National Hockey League. Communism supposedly fell with the Berlin wall more than a decade ago, but the fact that this kid, who is only a year or so older than some of our High School Hockey players, was unable to freely do what he wanted to is a sign that the Iron Curtain still exists. Read the plight of Evgeni and you will start to see where I am headed with this editorial.      http://www.russianprospects.com/public/article.php?article_id=472&PHPSESSID=eb584c3cb756e1a33a9688fb0ba55a7e

When Communism supposedly fell, many of those politicians in Russia, may have made their way the United States and are now working in the ranks of youth Hockey in the United States. I am not Joseph McCarthy or the Red Scare, but I can tell you the the resemblance of what Malkin went through is pretty similar to what goes on around the rinks of Western Pennsylvania. Evgeni had NO CHOICE but to leave Russia and pursue his dream and many kids in this area are doing the same because of the political landscape of the PIHL and the ridiculous nature of how it’s run and where it is headed.

The administrative nightmare and red tape of paperwork to run a hockey game is way out of hand as it is now over $ 1000 to play a HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY game at Mt Lebanon Recreation Center and there are MANY OTHER RINKS WITH SIMILAR COSTS SO I AM NOT PICKING ON MT LEBANON. The ice is $ 240 an hour, which I can stomach and about average so $ 480 is the norm. $ 50 for the EMT, which from what I understand from one local rink is not what the EMT personnel receives, which is $ 5 less than the league charges, which is why the PIHL needs to be Audited and never has been. $ 150 for referees is $ 75 per game for Varsity and up from $ 45 in 2000-2001 [I wish we all got raises they are enjoying]. League Reps get $ 25 and for the mound of paperwork they fill out they should, but it used to be $ 10. A $ 211.52 charge for two Mt Lebanon police officers to provide security and the stands are less than half full unless its Bethel Park – Mt Lebanon? and then ……………..there’s the $ 90 per game PIHL Administrative fee….for what ? So the Joker can sit at his website and update the scores? Or so all of the schedule changes can go into a black hole of e-mails? The total is $ 1006.52 for one High School Hockey Game, which can be curfewed , if it is 30 seconds past the second hand on the sun dial. Folks, this is extortion and it’s priceless!

So what you have is a league that is overcharging and what does the product look like. My favorite subject is the Open Division, but before I start on that subject, let’s talk about the idle threats of fines and such that Mr. Freeze and the Villans tried to impose prior to the season if any organization even attempted to FIELD A JV OR FRESHMAN TEAM OUTSIDE OF THE LEAGUE to god forbid SAVE $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. I have news for all of the stupid and yes I said stupid people who are buffaloed by this tactic. There are no less than a dozen to two dozen clubs playing JV and Freshman and Developmental games outside of the League, in fact it is my understanding that the Board of Governors voted it down and its still being threatened. Two years ago when we tried to start an independent JV / Freshman League, people were all for it as as many as 20 clubs joined the discussion until the Villans started spreading threats and calling in the chips like the mafia. Teams in the Lake Shore are playing in an independent league and the Laurel Highlands League is still alive and there are independent JV teams playing hockey in Western Pennsylvania, so not everyone is stupid. And you thought that Evgeni had it tough?

Varsity Hockey is now to the point, where the Pittsburgh Post Gazette will not even publish the standings and hasn’t to date for this season. Why? Because nobody cares about the product and if the Penguins do not stay in Pittsburgh, which will be decided soon because of the politicians letting this thing being decided politically with the Isle of Capri debacle. So here we are on a Thursday night in December, which used to be the BIGGEST night of High School Hockey and 12 out of the 18 games on the schedule are the Open Division. 26 out of the 76 schools represented by name are in the Open Division, including 5 West Virginia schools, who will eventually form their own division and at least a half dozen IMPURE NON-HIGH SCHOOL TEAMS with players from an array of schools representing one school. How can a school principal from Quigley or Valley or Ringgold sign off on a roster with for a school team with players who don’t even attend the school?

Forest Hills and Ferndale, left the safe haven of Class A to take even bigger beatings in the Open Division against a bunch of sandbagging Class AAA schools, who are playing down to play for what?……….NOTHING! Because there is NO State Championship for the OPEN Classification and more importantly NO CRITERIA to establish one and when I speak to people in the Eastern Pa hockey circles, they shutter and say well maybe we can have our second Varsities play them! And people think the PIAA is interested………..not in our lifetime?

And we wonder why Kool-Aid is the beverage of choice. Players at the Bantam and even Pee Wee level are now forgoing playing High School Hockey to travel and play outside of this area. I not saying that they should, they are just making a choice because although they are not being forced to sign contracts at 3 AM by Magnitagorsk, their decisions are becoming pretty clear cut. All of you people who turn a deaf ear and close your eyes when this is discussed in the rinks or provide a stupid blank look when you are enlightened to what is going on here, will be long gone when the next group comes along in five years.

For the people who care, THERE IS AN ELECTION IN APRIL and the Hockey Community needs to ‘Stand as One’ a rid themselves of a BIG problem and elect some new people and CLEAN HOUSE. The Joker, the Riddler, Mr Freeze, Cat Woman, Bookworm, Egghead, and all of the Villans need to be sent to Gotham State Prison with Warden Crichton. And hockey needs to be restructured toward Split Seasons, Cooperation and not in Competition with PAHL and with a GOAL to be cost effective.
There are lots of rinks that Mario Built and Sidney and Evgeni can build and keep open, the hockey community just needs to have the politicians and people looking to pad their own pockets out of the picture to make it happen!

Pa Hockey Editorial ~ Have the Travel Programs in Western Pa out lived their usefulness ?
It’s time for some major changes in Amateur and High School Hockey…maybe some people and organizations have outlived their usefulness?

Many of you that follow Pa Hockey know that I have been pretty critical of the administration of the Villans and the philosophy of the OTHER Villans of Interscholastic Hockey, which is the AAA AND Junior B coaches who hold themselves to higher esteem to anyone else in the hockey community, who are FORMER high school coaches who couldn’t survive Interscholastic Hockey or found their egos satisfied by the extortion of young people through making them miss high school games and making them drink to vanted ‘Kool Aid’ and sign ‘Mr Haney’s’ contract.

Now this may seem like harsh words or bitterness from someone who supports High School Hockey and ALL Hockey in this area , but this continuous ring in my ears about ALL of the Division 1 Scouts and Junior A Scouts at these tournaments is great exposure for our young people, if true, but I find it hard to believe that we have 6 AAA Midget Teams in this area and all of them are going to DIFFERENT tournaments and at these six DIFFERENT Tournaments, there are loads of NHL, NCAA Division 1 and Junior A Scouts at EVERY DIFFERENT tournament.

In addition, this philosophy is now being sold to kids that are 9 and 10 years old by these organizations, not to help them secure a future hockey career, but to get their money into the organization to fund all of these out of town trips. And many of these players going to Junior B camps are being asked to fork out bigs bucks in exchange for a chance at ‘the Dream’.

Supposed High School friendly organizations, namely the Junior B Penguins and North Hills Vipers, who say ‘yes….we support High School Hockey and we don’t want you to miss your high school games’ are talking out of both sides of their mouth and telling their players that the consequences are THAT THEY WILL SIT AT THEIR JUNIOR B OR MIDGET AAA games on the weekend, if they miss practice during the same times as High School game and tournaments. Now I have been and will be the first to admit, I have been very critical of the Hornets organization for their policies and contracts, but they encourage their players not to play high school and play one team, which I still don’t believe is the right thing, but it is not as hypocritical as the other choices. Especially given the amount of money families are bring asked to fork out to mortgage their children’s future.

At the National Invitational Scholastic Showcase in November in Jamestown, I had an opportunity to meet and discuss Interscholastic and Amateur Hockey with people from places like New York, Florida, Texas, Illinois, Indiana and Eastern Pennsylvania and the overwhelming sentiment was that a National High School Tournament would be a great event and an overwhelming majority, if not all of the twelve teams will return to Jamestown on December 7-9, 2007. Maybe Bethel Park will have their Junior B players so they can better compete with Buffalo St Francis or Holy Ghost Prep will have their 4 midget AAA players or possibly Summit Christian Academy from West Palm Beach, Florida will have a full bench to compete with the best teams in the country. New York and Illinois have Split Seasons to allow their players to ENJOY both High School/Prep and Midget /Amateur Hockey.

Locally, the Pa Hockey Scholastic Showcase in late December will have the best tournament field ever, but who knows what players will disappear under threats of duress from AMATEUR coaches, not just at the Midget level, but now at the Bantam and even Pee Wee levels because of some great whipped up tournament in Columbus or Harrisburg or Virginia or some other hockey scout hockey hotbed. Folks, the Pa Hockey Scholastic Showcase is now in its 11th year and is one of the premier events in the country and its fun and most importantly ITS LOCAL and an opportunity for these kids to play in front of their peers and families and showcase their talents. Plum’s R.J. Umberger played in it, as did Seton LaSalle’s JB Bittner, as did TJ’s John Zeiler, Seton LaSalle’s Louie Garritan, BP’s Denny Kirstein, Central’s Bernie Chmiel, Lebo’s Robbie Hammel, Peter’s Christian Minella, Indiana’s Casey Haines, Peter’s Matt Schwartz, Peter’s Chris and Matt Clackson, and many more who have gone onto Division 1 hockey.

I was watching a division 1 game between Maine and Boston College the other night and the captain of Maine is 26 years old. So my question is why is this hockey community so in a hurry to push 13, 14 and 15 year olds in travel hockey instead of letting these kids mature and enjoy the process. The answer is the self-serving greed and egos of the coaches and the travel organizations!

The result has been that the AA midget programs that were the backbone of the PAHL for many years and serve the majority of the high school programs in Western Pennsylvania has disappeared. Replaced by half baked AAA Midget Teams, that are AA teams with a handful of AAA players, the infrastructure of the development of hockey in this area in shambles. In addition, Developmental Hockey players in learn to skate programs are being pushed into Mite A and AA programs, leaving the Developmental In House programs bare to the bone with little or no players. I know this because I have been approached by several organizations already and my 7 year old is still learning the fundamentals of skating and hockey in Allegheny Hockey Association’s tremendous program.

The by-Product of this at the Interscholastic level is the PIHL Open Division, which is a mix of Co-Op Impure Schools, Recreational hockey teams of players who have the money to play and afford the extortionist PIHL Billing system and schools who have stacked teams to play down from their Enrollment level to clobber bad teams and glorify themselves in a league that can only be known as the re-birth of ‘the South Penn League’, which was a league developed for schools that no one else wanted to play in the 1970’s and 1980’s, but was a great way of collecting USA Hockey Team Registration Fees and today is keeping the overpaid and under-qualified commissioner employed.

People the answer to all of this is Split-Season, which Bethel Park’s Jim McVay is doing and to another extent has been done at North Allegheny and will be adopted very soon by other organizations locally. This is the first step and the second step is to pare down the number of AAA Midget [including Junior B] programs to 2 or 3. The third step is to start putting together some Developmental programs, like the Pa Hockey Developmental Clinics [we now are approaching 150 players in the Murrysville Dek Hockey Program built from scratch] to rebuild the infrastructure of the PAHL and the fourth and final step is to rebuild the PIHL with cooperation from the Amateur and Travel organizations to play on the weeknights on Monday through Thursday, while the Amateurs play on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The other agreement will be to set the marquee High School Tournaments, such as the St Margaret’s Fall Face Off [October], Kittanning Invitational [October], Central Catholic Invitational [November], National Invitational Scholastic Showcase [early December], Pa Hockey Scholastic Showcase [after Christmas], Meadville Invitational and Bethel Park MLK [Presidents Day weekend] dates a year in advance to allow travel coaches the opportunity to NOT schedule their out of town tournaments at those times. Out of the 20 odd weeks of the hockey season, the Interscholastic Hockey community would only be asking for a half dozen weekends to play and promote these great events and more importantly the BEST players would be afforded the opportunity to play in these events and showcase their talents. And maybe, just maybe all of these Division 1 Scouts and Junior A Scouts at these tournaments would COME TO PITTSBURGH FOR THE FIRST TIME CAUSE LEGEND HAS IT NONE OF THEM HAVE EVER BEEN HERE.

Before we think that every Division 1 program, Junior A program and NHL team is looking at OUR players, we ought to think about cleaning up our ENTIRE philosophy and infrastructure of hockey in this area and maybe get some coaches who really care
About the players and the future of this sport who are now sitting on the sideline waiting for the smoke to clear. It’s time for some major changes in Amateur and High School Hockey…and MOST OF THEM HAVE outlived their usefulness in OUR Hockey Community!

Crimefighting, the Bat Computer and Gotham City News return in 2006-2007
Many of the 'Concerned Citizens' of Gotham City have been out and about early this season and the bat phone is starting to ring for those of us interested in the happenins of Pa Hockey. While the Villans continues to bleed Western Pennsylvania dry of the very possible dollar through fees, fines and fr----, PA Hockey continues to provide service to the hockey community. Their was really some serious consideration given to changing our theme to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but Sleepy retired from the scene and we couldn't narrow down who would play the part of Dopey ?

So Batman and his crew of Crime Fighters, the Bat Computer and now the Gotham City News [Dick Grayson a/k/a Robin is now editor] will continue to make their prescence felt on the Western Pa Hockey front. Absent from Gotham last season were the editorials we all enjoy to keep the people given the Mushroom treatment by the Villans [which is a majority] abreast of what really happens behind the scenes, which can be characterized best as a whole lot of nothing. Save the Pens chants have died, the Open Division is more of a bigger disaster, teams and programs falling by the wayside continues, hockey development is at an all-time low in Western Pa [rivaling the early 1980's] and oh yes by the way, the head Villan is getting another raise to take the package closer to $ 100,000 a year ? And in April, the Villans will be poised to rig another election, so expect them all to be out gladhanding you and have big smiles on their faces, because keeping control of the million dollar a year paper tiger is what they are all about !

There is hope on the horizon.........the Penguins have a new re-birth under a very solid General Manager in Ray Shero, who looks to be building a contender around Crosby, Malkin and company, but it will only work if the team has ownership committed to staying in Pittsburgh and building a new arena, which is in the hands of the politicians, which is a crapshoot at best for the future of our professional hockey franchise nearing its 40th year in operation. If the Penguins stay.........hockey has a chance to right itself in Western Pa and there needs to be some new blood at the Amateur and High School level, who are willing to serve the hockey community and not trying to be politicians. Having said that, it will be important to see volunteerism begin a new spirit to overcome the demise set forth by a very self serving group, which now is doing its best to ruin the sport in this area and pay themselves a lot of money, with what could be done through 100 %Volunteers !!

The Pa Hockey Foundation has started some excellent programs in the East Suburbs and they will continue to attract young people to the sport at the early ages in an attempt to try to rebuild long established hockey programs at Franklin Regional, Gateway, Plum, Penn Trafford, Penn Hills [who will fail to field a Varsity or ANY teams for the first time in 36 years !!!!] and other Eastern schools before it is too late ! Street Hockey, Dek Hockey, Learn to Skate, Learn to Play Hockey and two of Western Pa's two top Amateur Organizations and Ice Arenas have jumped in and joined hands in an effort to move forward. The ONLY way this will work is through the single most important factor, that has driven this sport for over 40 years in this area........people with the ability to Volunteer their time to make it happen. This will put a hault to the virtual nosedive that hockey is heading for in this geographic area. So as we start the 2006-2007 season, let me put one thought is front of the Concerned Citizens of Gotham, is it time for a new beginning or are we going to have the continued attitude of 'well my son is a senior and I would love to help, just let me know' or are their people out their who really care about this sport and its plight. If you're interested, we meet the first Wednesday of every month..........and if not thanks for your help !

The State of Interscholastic Hockey Address of Pa Hockey ~ March 2006

As many of you have stopped me in the rink this season and have been anxiously anticipating my annual address of the ‘State of Interscholastic Hockey in Western Pennsylvania’, I decided to pick the timing of my choosing to address the continuing sad state of affairs which plague this side of the state.

Before I start and unveil my solution to the dwindling Class A Division and the Glorified JV Open Division, which contains many schools who could not compete at AAA or AA, who sandbagged this season in the name of winning games after miserable 04-05 campaigns, I want to address the Villans of Gotham City, who continue to raise the price of hockey, including their OWN salaries and keep raising FEES.

The greatest part about the recent All-Star Event is that each of the Villans exited the Valley Sports Center shortly after the beginning of the Open Division All-Star game, which just proves my point that the Open Division is just a way to collect FEES and a political tool to keep the Villans in power. Mr Freeze, who did not even attend the All-Star Event, can keep busy writing 16-Page Manifestos about me to get re-elected, but has not been seen at one game this season nor did he attend the Joker’s big rally at Mellon Arena last weekend to support the Penguins, which turned out 500 people and not the 8000 predicted by the Ma Parker e-mail. Mr Freeze is worthless as a President of the misguided PIHL and all of the promises made in April were baseless and none have come to fruition. In fact, his beloved Quigley is down to 8 players and supposedly has phantom players on the roster just to field a team.

Oh ‘Concerned Citizens of Gotham City’ Class A Hockey is dying as Quigley, along with some other Class A programs are near death and the flourishing Open Division is just as bad. The Class A All-Star game was such a mismatch that I considered not even attending the game because I knew the Southwest would trounce the Northeast and I was right 9-2.

In Mr Freeze’s 16-page manifesto, his partner in crime False Face, who commands the Open Division made a public statement challenging me to come forward with my ideas about the PIHL. The first thought I have, which is a continuation of last springs JV-Freshman Philosiphy developed by several schools who were going to pull out of the PIHL prior to the Mafia Villans cashing in their chips and making millions of promises to the General Membership is to HELP REDUCE THE COST OF HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY as follows:

1 – Each School would be responsible for providing 16 Ice Slots for Varsity [2 Hour] and 12 for Junior Varsity and Freshman [1 ½ Hours] and negotiate their own ice costs, EMT’s, Security and League Reps. Therefore you can eliminate the $ 83 per game Admin Costs charged by the PIHL. Essentially, this would eliminate the League Scheduler, Egghead, who has created an absolute fiasco with Schedule Changes in 05-06 and has changed over 100 Varsity Games and don’t blame it on the Weather because we have had a mild winter. Any leftover ice could be used for make-up games or practice time.

2 - Eliminate the Commissioner’s Office and SAVE $ 150,000 in administrative costs and pay Stipends to a Statistician, Registrar, Bookkeeping [for Administrative Costs Only], Referee Liasion and Operations Director. You would not need anyone to schedule Games, EMT’s, Security or League Reps, because this would be the responsibility of the school.

3 – Get a real website that promotes hockey Period !
4 – Attached is my Re-Alignment Proposal that will create a SOLID Class A, AA and AAA Division for years to come and it will be very competitive and in addition align Western Pennsylvania with Eastern Pennsylvania:

2004 Pennsylvania High School Hockey Championships - Breakaway Editorial !
From: Matt Sacks - Breakaway Monthly Magazine !
From the Breakaway Message Board - 4/11/04

Apr 11, 04 - 11:31 PM Pittsburgh Hospitality

I would like to personally thank a few people from Pittsburgh for their hospitality this weekend at the State Championships.

First I would like to thank Serra Catholic coach, Tom Mooney, who after being out-smarted by Radnor coach Ed Ritti about the eligibility of an assistant coach, decided to make sure that no photographers were allowed on the Radnor bench. Good call coach Mooney, you sure showed Radnor who’s boss, photographers often influence the outcome of hockey games!

I would also like to thank PIHL Commisioner Ed Sam, who generously allowed me to observe three consecutive hockey games while standing on a 12 foot ladder so that I could get my camera lens over the glass. I appreciate the professional courtesy that you extended to me after my five hour drive and our specific conversation about where I would be taking pictures from.

I don’t want to speak for coach Hammond, but I think he would also like to thank you for allowing the photographer that HE PAID FOR, to view the game next to me and on that same ladder after I was through with it.

I have sent team pictures to all of the Pittsburgh coaches that have requested them in each of the past four seasons AT NO CHARGE! That will most certainly change!

On behalf of Radnor, Carroll and Malvern I would like to thank the PIHL for allowing them to take home their trophies to share with their family, friends and student bodies. I am glad that you EACH decided that a $1,000.00 check apiece would be a sufficient deposit, because anything more might have been thought of as excessive.

On behalf of Radnor, I would like to thank you for not having last seasons State Championships team engraved into the trophy with all of the previous winners. I understand that a year may not be enough time to have the engraving done, but what’s the hurry, if you had no intentions of letting them take the trophy home, it wouldn’t really matter if their names were on it.

It was also nice of you to insist that Mr. Mills (Malvern’s trainer) return the two “extra” Championship medals that were left over. I am sure the medals that say “2004 State Champions” will be of valuable use to you in the future.

Without being sarcastic……I would like to extend my true thanks to Jeff Mauro, Tom Pandolfo and Stu Rulnick I enjoyed talking hockey, breaking bread and having a few glasses of barley and hopps with you guys. I hope you and your teams make it Philly next year, I guarantee that you will be treated differently than we were!
And to Greg Dugan who did all he could to clear up “Photo-gate”, unfortunately to no avail. But thanks for the try and the Ladder!

Its time that HS Hockey becomes recognized !

PA Hockey Editorial

What does the future hold and what is the price?

It was interesting the other day watching the Inauguration of President Obama and the sheer joy of seeing a great success story for a gentleman that had a dream of change and is driving the young people in this country to believe that anything is possible. It took a great deal of courage for this man to stand up to the establishment in this country of what the preceding government did to put the greatest nation in world at peril financially and the security of the world in even worse shape. My admiration for President Obama is that this man did things peacefully and joined Black, White, Hispanic and all nationalities together and while there is plenty of work ahead of him, began on day one to change this country as he promised to do.

I was struck by the comments of Vice President Joe Biden, who is his wisdom chose to address the Presidential Inauguration luncheon to address Senators, Congressmen, Supreme Court Judges and the media and state, that “the United States of America is the greatest country in the world and among him were the most talented people ever assembled and working together they could accomplish anything and bring the USA back to greatness”. I agree with the Vice President and you all probably wonder what this has to do with Interscholastic Hockey, so please read on.

As the Obamas saw former President Bush, who in my opinion set this country back 50 years, into the sunset of the helicopter, I couldn’t help remind myself of the images of ex-VP Cheney sitting in a wheelchair smirking about all of the money his company Haliburton stole from sending our young men and women to Iraq and Afghanistan, with thousands who came home in body bags to supposedly defend our freedom. And how the price of gas mysteriously went from $ 1.50 a gallon when Bush took office to nearly $ 4.00 and made the Bushes Oil refineries a nice Plantinum Parachute for him to retire in Texas. None of this will ever be investigated nor will either of these people ever be tried for what I consider a crime.

So why should any of us ever think that Interscholastic Hockey, headed by people more stale than the Bush Administration should change. Similar to Bush’s victory over Al Gore in the general election, where Gore had more votes, this guy remained in office. The PIHL administration has developed an election process that will keep people whose children have been out of hockey for over 15 years in control of over $ 1 million dollars a year and have never had an audit in 10 years and continue to hemorage the member schools into extinction.

Programs in business for 20-30 years like Penn Hills, North Catholic, Steel Valley, Forest Hills, Butler, Indiana, Cathedral Prep and more have failed to field a Varsity team in 2008-2009 and the PIHL just keeps jacking up the price to keep their administration in command, holding a spell over a powerless and useless Board of Governors at bay with their lack of planning and shot gun approach to running the sport. To make things even worse the 22 team Open Division of Co-Op schools stretching from Altoona to West Virginia has less than 15 Developmental Teams [Junior Varsity and Freshman] to build the future and will even get worse as the years go by. Class AA, once a stronghold of the beginnings of the PIHL will more than likely lose 3-time State Champions Thomas Jefferson, last years Penguins Cup finalist Franklin Regional and long time AA power South Park over the next two years in extinction.

If there is a Barack Obama out there ready to lead the PIHL, don’t be fooled that this organization does not discriminate. A lot of people have commented to me that I haven’t been to many games this year and there is a reason for that. For one thing I have been busy promoting developmental Grade School programs and Learn to Play Hockey initiatives and really don’t want to waste my time promoting the PIHL.

I still maintain the Pa Hockey Websites, with scores and highlights and Post Gazette rankings and run the Pa Hockey Scholastic Showcase and National Invitational Scholastic Showcase Tournaments, but an incident at Mellon Arena last spring changed my approach. You see I was banned from the Mellon Arena by the PIHL [as part of my duties with the Post Gazette] from reporting the Penguins Cup last spring and I was threatened to be arrested by a Dick Cheney look alike who was more interested in collecting $ 5 he could divvy up later that night than promotion of their failing league.  I wrote the Penguins with my concerns and they really had nothing to do with it and as PIHL Secretary Ginna Sonnik said in the April Executive Board Minutes ‘that Jeff was singled out’ yes discriminated against by the PIHL, a 501 c 3 non-profit organization, the same PIHL that I was President of and founded from 1996 – 1999.          http://www.pihlweb.com/pgm-download_media.php?name=EC_MEETING_4-3-08.pdf

The PIHL needs change and they need it NOW! And there is an election in April, the PIHL is hoping sweeps under the rug and re-elects themselves for another two more years of Bush and Cheney extortion. They didn’t have a January Board of Governors meeting because people are starting to ask questions, so they cancelled it!

People, I really like hockey and as you all know I am pretty passionate about it. I am really not going waste any more of my time promoting a losing proposition. The PIHL Executive Board, Administration and Commissioner are real LOSERS and they can tell everyone all the stories they want about everything they are doing for hockey, but they aren’t doing anything but holding the sport back. Don’t ask me to get involved because I am busy working on the future of hockey through our developmental programs and hopefully in 2013 when these kids reach High School Hockey there is a league left to play in?

Maybe there is a Barack Obama for Interscholastic Hockey out there but I doubt it, so my vote for the 2009 PIHL election is for Mr Freeze, then they’ll have all of the games outdoors, because the rinks will start closing soon and they’ll need him to keep things cold and in the dark!

2010 - 2011 Pa Hockey Editorial -How do you lose 13 State Championships in one year before the season even starts?

I have been involved in promoting Interscholastic Hockey since it inception in 1971 at the Alpine Ice Chalet which marks the 40th Anniversary of High School Hockey in Western Pennsylvania. The year 2010 should be a celebration of those programs, like Shaler, Upper St Clair and Mt Lebanon, who were 3 of the 6 Original High School Hockey programs.

In addition, the Pittsburgh Penguins are moving into the state of the art Consol Energy Center and have been generous to display the Interscholastic and Amateur Hockey Organizations Jerseys and have computerization, which at some point will be linked to PointStreak and give live updates to all games in Western Pennsylvania. This is a great way of promoting the sport and after 10 years the PIHL may have gotten something right, although the Pittsburgh Penguins have a huge part in that promotion, because they understand where their future ticket base is.

To lose storied programs like 8-time State Champions Meadville and 5-time State Champions Bishop McCort should not go unnoticed, but this has been a gradual process beginning when the PIHL was formed in 1999-2000. Under the current leadership, the PIHL has gone from well over 90 schools and 250 + teams to somewhere around 45 schools competing for the Penguins Cup. Yeah, the economy can be blamed or yeah the numbers in hockey can be blamed or travel hockey, oh yeah that’s a convenient excuse as well.

The big number is the cost of High School Hockey and the lack of value that is given to this sport. For a child to play Freshman Hockey in the PIHL, it costs over $ 1500 for a 6th grader to suit up for a Freshman team. Being a parent, I have a 6th grader now eligible to play Freshman Hockey and why in the world would I pay over $ 1500 to play 16 games, when in Amateur Hockey, you can pay $ 1000 to play more games and if you want to play 3 times as many games for $ 2000. That is a huge issue for people and the PIHL is now sending surveys out to ask their membership to help them, with the question ‘Do you think all High School Teams should HAVE TO play in the PIHL?’. Folks, Monopoly is a board game and monopolies in business were banished in the 1980’s with government regulation.

The plain and simple truth is that the Laurel Mountain Hockey League [Volunteers and Less Cost], the Lake Shore Hockey League [Volunteers and Less Cost] and the PAHL [Volunteers and Less Cost] are attractive options for potential High School Hockey Players and this is why Meadville and Bishop McCort are no longer participating in the PIHL. Not like there where not any warning signs of this happening as long time programs Indiana, Penn Hills, Seton LaSalle, North Catholic and others are amongst the refuse of 40 + ‘Teams that are not here Anymore’ Wall of Shame of the PIHL Administration.

I walked away from the PIHL Administration in 2001 and saw at the time that it was a power and money grab at the time and it continues with the stale people who still are running the league. The original By-Laws had term limitations bccause many of the people involved felt that you always needed to have new blood coming in and as one so called hockey expert stated at the time “you need to have hockey people running hockey”. That person was involved with one of the two hockey programs that earned the 13 State Championships that left the PIHL in one year. Is it time for change to get rid of people who have overstayed their welcome in Interscholastic Hockey? No, I think you should fill out that survey and get on the Long Range Planning Committee!

The greatest quote I heard came out of the focus groups that the Pittsburgh Penguins put together for High School, Amateur and Dek and Inline Hockey, when someone told me that one of the illustrious board members of the PIHL stated that in their meetings ‘that we told the Penguins all of these ideas, and they just don’t get it !’

Excuse me…this was a franchise in bankruptcy and was saved by Mario Lemieux and rose from the ashes to win a Stanley Cup in 2009 and build a $ 400 Million Building, which will be a fortress for Hockey for the next 50 years. Maybe the Penguins should kick some people to the curb and take over High School Hockey and Amateur Hockey? If you think that is a stretch……Why did they form a Non-Profit Foundation? It’s around the corner folks and maybe when they get involved, they can go to the PIAA and have the sport become a part of the National High School Federation and Sanction the Sport through the schools. Then it won’t cost me the equivalent of a college education to have my son play High School Hockey?

Nobody ever dream that Penn State would be a Division 1 Hockey Program except of course Joe Battista and it became a reality when $ 88 Million was donated to build a new arena and fund the scholarships. Don’t think for a minute the Pittsburgh Penguins and the University of Pittsburgh aren’t watching this and they already have a new arena. Times will be changing in High School Hockey and so will the administration ….stay tuned!

A Hockey Article that every coach, player and parent should have to read !

Sidney Crosby, the face of the NHL, is currently on the sidelines as he is suffering from a couple of hits he took to the melon earlier this month. Now the superstar is voicing his concern. The 30 team league general managers have also gathered in the past to discuss.  We are now seeing suspensions and further more on the unfortunate side, players being injured and/or suffering career threatening damage. Now these are players that are supposed to be the best in the world. The players today in the NHL are made up not only from North America, but also stem from the European countries and beyond. The caliber of play is extremely high and intense at the same time. So why is it if the best players in the world, who possess such awesome skill, are now banging heads?

Well this is the big debate and everything has been thrown at the chalk board. One theory believes the “instigation rule” is the cause. Many players, coaches, and GMs feel that it makes a player think twice about dropping the gloves and protecting their superstars. Others feel the game is just simply way to quick and extreme in the modern era. Players and the pace are far faster than decades ago. Although there are also some rumblings from players stating that they do not know or fully comprehend the rule. Now it is this declaration that should make us all put our thinking caps on. If we truly peel back the layers of the onion a bit more and research why this gradual increase in illegal body checks from players to the head we may in fact find a correlation.

Are kids at the youth level being taught properly on all aspects of checking? When your son straps on the skates at the pee-wee level, is the coach more interested in throwing the pucks on the ice to go over the power play or does he actually take the time to instruct proper body checking? Today there is a lack of coaches volunteering their time. With that said it is unknown if many coaches today getting behind the benches truly understand all aspects of the game. This is simply because they either never played or have very limited competitive playing days under their belt. As far as USA Hockey is concerned, you can simply sit in a classroom for 8 hours on a Saturday and obtain your Level 3 coaching certificate to coach at the pee-wee level (under age 12) where checking is legal. Is there a problem here and perhaps in other hockey governing bodies? Believe me, I give tons of credit to the dad that gives to the game and wants to help kids have the opportunity to play this great game. Although I do not feel it is beneficial to the kids in the long run for coaches teaching with little hockey experience. I personally have never wrestled in my life, so me telling a kid how to properly begin a match on the mat is both an embarrassment to me and eventually for the kid. So that’s why if my kid wanted to wrestle, I would have the best fanny cushion money could buy. Hockey is no different and perhaps even more complicated because it is a team sport that is played on ice with skates, a stick, other equipment with full contact.

Personally, I am not entirely convinced kids in youth programs are being properly coached on the fundamentals of hockey. We are talking skating, passing, stick handling, and shooting. So why would a coach take the extra time and explain the proper ways to body check at the young and or older ages. After all, we are playing to win right!!! That means practicing the power play, the break-outs, neutral zone trap, the 1-2-2, the 2-1-2, or the 411 (ha, ha!). Pucks, pucks, pucks!!! Too many times as coaches we assume too much about the skills and game knowledge of the players. Individual development is a tough task as teams are allotted only 50 minutes of practice time and probably 80% - 90% of those are half-ice anyway at the youth level, at two times a week. Ice times are tough to come by and expensive as well. So that’s why mom and dad need to cough up extra cash for private lessons if they want their kid to skate like Patrick Kane, dangle like Pavel Datsyuk, make precision passes like Daniel Sedin, and one-time like Steven Stamkos. When the kid steps onto the ice, he should already know about the basics skills and that includes body checking. Wrong...coaches need to do a better job in teaching hockey from A to Z. Emphasis on individual skill development in my opinion has decreased overall. A lot of coaches are incorporating heavy game strategies at such an early age. Therefore, if nobody is conducting one-on-one instruction with players from an early age on the aspects of hip checks, poke checks, and body checks how else will they learn and continuously demonstrate the technique properly. Some of the current NHL players don’t know about the entire ruling and that's the intriguing part. What was happening with these players in their youth careers at the dawn of checking? If we start teaching the “right” way from the beginning and continue to develop the checking skills throughout a player’s career, things will reform.

Also coaches need to properly teach kids chasing after the puck near the boards for instance. I see young kids go after the biscuit in the corner straight on rather than approaching the puck at a slight angle to help absorb a hit better. Tell me when you see a player with eyes in the back of his head because I want him on my team. Only a small percentage of players it seems today have the know-how of approaching the puck with a plan in mind and knowing where others players on the ice are at the time. Kids need to also to be taught when to “check-up” too. Some suggest the "stop sign" on the back of the helmet and jersey. If the player has his back directly to you, chances are he is not going to make a significant play anyway as he can not see the play and you can quickly rub him into the boards without using full force. Teach these kids to put the brakes on and not drill the kid through the boards so in 1.2 seconds this kid’s playing career isn't over. Or even more importantly, his life! I believe checking is used to separate the player from the puck, period. Not to put him up in the 17th row. Not only educate on the physical aspect of body checking, but also the mental approach too.

Kids simply do not talk these days especially at the younger ages. Perhaps it’s the dawn of the cell phone and texting, but I’m sure Paul Coffey, Ray Bourque, Denis Potvin, or Bobby Orr did not go into the corners without a “heads-up” from either their defensive partner or goalie. If he did, I’m quite confident their communication did not break down when they went back to the bench! I realize the mouth guard can impede the speaking skills, but if they can argue on the bench over goals and assists, they can certainly give their buddy the benefit of the doubt on the ice.

Lastly, many have brought up the "respect" subject. The latest to do so is the colorful and often opinionated, Don Cherry, of Hockey Night in Canada (HNIC). He has been around the game for many years and is very passionate about the game of hockey. I whole heartedly agree with him. Many players today think they are the biggest thing since sliced bread. It is evident across all age groups at all levels. I realize rookies are trying to earn a job while the vets are trying to keep their job in this dog-eat-dog, ultra-competitive, professional hockey league. Although it seems nobody cares or respects their opponent much anymore. The olden days of getting a whack in school from your teacher for getting out of line is gone and so is that discipline on the ice. So if you only receive a 2-minute boarding or charging penalty for ruining a guys season, why wouldn't you go out there and do it again. Somebody needs to sit that boy down and give him a good lesson. Then somebody needs to give him a better lesson with a beat down behind the shed on the ice in front of all his peers and fans. I'm sure he will not feel that tough underneath all that equipment anymore and he certainly will keep his elbows down and check straight on the next time.

In the end, yes it is ultimately the player that needs to recognize what is a legal check from the giving and receiving end. Including how to position his body along the boards and in open-ice to absorb checks, keeping his head-up, and the on-ice communication aspect. But then again, it is these players who possess that hockey sense and knowledge that compete at the higher levels and avoid dangerous situations for the most part. Still these kids need guidance in the beginning at least. So the real and ultimate responsibility is still on a coach. He needs to teach the kids as a whole and individually at practice and during games. The sooner we integrate these simple techniques together at the early ages on a consistent basis the better and safer the game will be. So when these kids become professionals the game will still be physical and fast-paced, while being less dangerous. Please, no more head banging hockey.
