Where are they now ? Onward and Upward - 2007 - 2008
Every year, Pa Hockey searches far and wide for former Pa Hockey Interscholastic Hockey players who are now continuing their careers at the Junior A and NCAA Division Collegiate level. We have compiled our list and the results are in. Now we may miss a player or two on this list, so let us know if we ommitted anyone from this prestigious list for 2007 - 2008.
We found 39 Players in Division 1 Hockey and we found 57 Players in Junior A Hockey. This is a little below the average in total than over the past five years as we usually find over 100 players. Enjoy the list of Onward and Upward for 2007-2008 !

Where are they now ? Onward and Upward 2006-2007
Once again...we at Pa Hockey have looked far and wide over the rosters of Major Junior A and NCAA Division 1 Colleges across the United States and in Canada and came up with the players from the State of Pennsylvania playing at that level. Keep in mind that this list does not include ACHA Division 1 or NCAA Division 3 [Does include Division 3 for Eastern Pa]. Now we know that when this list gets combed over that we may have omitted a player or two......so if you know of someone playing at that level, please let us know !
Here is the unoffical count:
Players playing in Division 1 Hockey
Total = 52 (Western Pa = 24 Eastern Pa = 28)
Players playing in Junior A Hockey in USHL+NAHL+EJHL
Total = 55 (Western Pa = 32 Eastern Pa = 23)
That puts Pa Hockey over 100............Congratulations to all of the players and families for their continued dedication to making Pa Hockey # 1. And continued success for all of those players who strive to further their hockey careers and seek higher education !
Thank you to Matt Sacks of Breakaway Magazine for his contribution to this report

He also led the entire USHL in playoff scoring that season with 8-6-14 in 9 games leading Tri-City into that USHL championship. This is an opportunity to see the Top 25 Players as selected by PA Hockey strut their stuff with 160 of the top players in Western Pennsylvania. The unfortunate part of these All-Star games is the the Penguins Hornets WILL NOT BE PARTICIPATING and again robbing these players an opportunity to represent their school for this High School event.
While that continues to happen, a great story came out of these All-Star Games thanks to John 'Just call me Chief O'Hara' Eddy of Somerset and Mary Sullivan of Woodland Hills after numerous attempts with the Villans to work out a time change with the Joker Commissioner [who has changed over 100 games in the Regular Season Schedule] would not budge on the times of the All-Star Games to accomodate several Junior B and Junior C players who were selected and ARE NOW PARTICIPATING. The Amateur Penguins Organization, who I'll call 'Luke Warm' High School Friendly changed the times of their games at Harmarville to Saturday Night to make this a reality.
When are people in Western Pennsylvania going to learn that there once was co-operation bewteen High School and Amateur......back when R.J. Umberger of Plum [Philadelphia Flyers], Ryan Malone of Upper St Clair [Pittsburgh Penguins], Martin Wilde of Forest Hills [Hershey Bears], J.B. Bittner of Seton LaSalle [Johnstown Chiefs], John Zeiler of Thomas Jefferson [St Lawrence], Kris Mayotte of Central Catholic [Union College], Bernie Chmiel of Central Catholic [Sacred Heaart], Mike Handza of Shaler [Denver University] And Louie Garritan of Seton LaSalle [Bemidji State] among many others, all played High School including All-Star Games and for the Midget AAA or Junior B teams. The result is that these players were able to use this competition and environment to excel and move on to play Division 1 hockey. Today's dilemma is a death struggle over kids cause by people, who frankly care more about lining their pockets rather than helping student athletes advance to the next level and reach higher educational and leadership roles. I know I sound like a broken record people, It's time for change......................the promises in April have just gotten worse and programs are dying !

It's always fun to take that trip down memory lane and for two programs in Western Pennsylvania, a significant accomplishment is about to take place. As Interscholastic Hockey is in the midst of its 35th season dating back to April 1970's beginnings at the Alpine Ice Chalet, Upper St Clair and Kittanning [Armstrong] have neared a great feat. Both programs are in striking distance of 500 wins overall including Regular Season, League Playoffs and Pennsylvania State Playoffs.
One glance at the USC History recounts the programs success and two Pennsylvania High School Hockey Championships in 1980 and 1987 in addition to the 1986 and 1990 Penguins Cup AAA titles for a total of four. Stories are told of the Brian Crawford game winner in 1980 in defeating Erie McDowell or of Chris Whittmore's game winner against Malvern to cap an undefeated season for the Panthers in 1987.
The same can be said of the Armstrong / Kittanning program and the lore of the Belmont Ice Arena with rich history and many memories. The most significant the 1991 Penguins Cup championship over Meadville before falling in a nailbitter to Council Rock in the AAA final.
Once known as the Arrows, the Kittanning program has flourished as the Wildcats and is a perennial contender at the Class AA level.
There is only one place you will be able to follow this story and its right here on Pa Hockey...................Congratulations to both programs and stay tuned as we count to history for two fine hockey programs ......Upper St Clair and Kittanning !
Countdown to 500 ...... As of February 11, 2006:

Plum's Umberger signs with Philadelphia Flyers !
 | |
R. J. Umberger, the free-agent center from Plum, has accepted a contract with the Philadelphia Flyers.
The two-year deal calls for a $1.185 million salary if Umberger plays in the NHL and a reduced salary if he is in the minors.
Umberger was Vancouver's first-round draft choice in 2002, but the Canucks traded his rights to the New York Rangers March 9. When New York failed to sign him by June 1, Umberger became a free agent.
Toronto made an offer similar to Philadelphia's and Umberger said it was a "very tough decision" to pick between the Flyers and Maple Leafs.
"I was really impressed with both organizations," he said. "It could have gone either way."
The Penguins - Umberger was a fan of the franchise while growing up - apparently also got real consideration, even though their contract prosposal is believed to have been worth only about $600,000 per season.
"I was serious about the Penguins," Umberger said. "Right now, it just wasn't best fit for me."
Umberger, a center, left Ohio State after his junior year and did not play during the 2003-04 season after failing to work out a contract with the Canucks or Rangers, but clearly does not regret the course he chose.
"I feel like the whole year was worth it," he said.
Umberger plans to go to Philadelphia next month to begin working out. And preparing for his first game action in well over a year.
"I'll have to refresh my memory," he said. "It will be fun, to say the least."

Ryan Malone ~ 1st ever Western Pa player in NHL !
 | | | Upper St Clair puts # 1 in the NHL ! |
|
A couple of years ago in December 1997, a lanky skinny young man wandered into the Golden Mile Ice Center for the 1997 Scholastic Showcase with dreams of becoming the first player ever to be raised and trained in Pittsburgh to reach the National Hockey League. The game was Plum vs Upper St Clair and Plum won the game 6-2 and everyone who attended that game that day swore that R.J Umberger would be in the NHL....and he will be there shortly as a member of the Vancouver Canucks.
What we didn't know at the time was that another young man who played in that same game ....... Upper St Clair's Ryan Malone had similar visions. This Friday Night October 10th, Ryan Malone will suit up for the Pittsburgh Penguins and make history for Pa Hockey in Western Pennsylvania.

KITTANNING -
On my way up route 66, which was the old route we used to take in the 1970s, the mind began to wander back to my first game at the Belmont in 1972 to see the Armstrong Arrows take on my favorite team, the Churchill Chargers in a West Penn High School Hockey League tilt attracting a packed house, a band, two of Western Pa Hockeys top teams and even television. This was High School Hockey in Kittanning and things havent changed much over the 35 years in between.
Sure the teams, the players, the coaches and the fans have come through the gates, but the Armstrong and Kittanning program has been winning hockey games consistently over that time period. Pat McCue, the first great player for Armstrong, returned to participate in the Alumni game this year, as do many others like Scott Patterson, Andy Walbert, current Head Coach Jon Yackmack, his assistants Lee Grafton, and Jamie King, who are just some of the players who have donned uniforms starting in the excellent in-house programs tutored by folks like John Wilson and Dave Crain and finishing their careers with Armstrong or Kittanning. Some outstanding coaching including Jon Spangler, the late Bob Patterson, Joe Ritchey and more recently Al Stipp and Jeff Smouse have engineered the program along with others to 499 wins in Regular Season, League playoff and Pennsylvania State Playoffs to this point over 35 seasons and tonight is the first opportunity to reach 500.
The flipside of the equation for this evenings contest is Peters Twp, who have won 3 out of the past 4 Pennsylvania Class AA titles. Head Coach Rick Tingles squad enters with a 13-4-0 record tied for 3rd seed with Canevin and facing a tough stretch with Kittanning, West Allegheny, Canevin and Indiana for the final four contests. The Indians
are again one of the favorites to be in contention and after a year ago when they proved everyone wrong by going on a magical playoff run there is no question anyone will count them out until they are eliminated from the playoffs. The unfortunate part for Peters is that their team only plays together when ALL of their players are in attendance. Due to the extortionist policies of the Penguins Hornets, Peters has been without a half dozen players for many games this season and for Peters sake hopefully all will get ten games in necessary for the Pennsylvania High School playoffs. And hopefully, the league in which they play in will have their act together to avoid the fiasco, which took place a year ago surrounding the Peters Twp Canon McMillan Penguins Cup semi-final at Harmarville, which was a great hockey game, with a sour taste for many including the winners and the losers.
So before and packed house at the Belmont, Kittanning and Peters 66, not to be confused with Lebo 66 [their neighbor down Route 19], locked horns in what has been a great rivalry over the years and with a little piece of Western Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania High School Hockey history at stake as the Wildcats look to become the 2nd program in two weeks time to achieve their 500th all-time victory.
With 12:00 remaining in the opening period Wildcat goaltender Joey Mecurio stopped Chris Papciak from in close for the games first big save. With 9:50 left in the opening period, Steven Phelps scored on a rebound beating Mike Mastaracci, from the right side of the crease to give Kittanning a 1-0 lead. Justin Kovatch lit the lamp on a breakaway with 7:00 left on the clock to give the Cats a 2-0 lead. Forty seconds later it was Kovatch, who collected a rebound with 6:20 to go and chipped it past Mastracci to make it 3-0. Then at 5:57, after Mastracci was chased in favor of Fitzgerald, Nick Troup made shot # 1 against the new Peters goaltender count beating him low to the stick side to make it an amazing 4-0 advantage for the home team in a little over 6 minutes. With 2:17 remaining, Evan Blodgett threaded a perfect pass on the back door to Colin McKelvey, who made no mistake and increased the score to 5-0.
On to the second period and Kittanning continued the onslaught at 14:17 as Justin Kovatch tipped in a Kyle Adams shot from the point to make it 6-0. At 12:35 Brandon Tingle got the Indians on the board on the power play and then lit the lamp again at 12:04 to give Peters its second goal and make it 6-2. With 9:26 remaining in the second, Brandon Tingle completed the hat trick with a rocket snapshot high over the glove hand side of Joey Mecurio to make this a hockey game at 6-3. Mike Mastracci returned to the game after the 6th Kittanning goal and made a huge save on Lee Heilmann on a breakaway at 6:32 and keep his team within range at 6-3. Peters went on the power play with a little over 4 ½ minutes to go and a chance to cut the lead again and with 3:17 left in the second Dustin Roux unleashed a wrist shot beating Mecurio on the stick side for a power play goal and now a 6-4 hockey game with 4 unanswered goals. With 1:54 remaining, Brandon Tingle followed the bouncing puck over the Kittanning defensemans stick and was in on a breakaway, but this time Joey Mecurio stopped him with a big league save.
After the ice cut, Kittanning went on the power play at 13:34, but Peters was able to kill it off. The Wildcats would settle into a tight checking third period and with 1:38 left in the period, when Lee Heilmann scored from on the doorstep, a hush fell over the Belmont crowd of relief and then a collective roar of the Concerned Citizens of Kittanning as the score read Kittanning 7 Peters Twp 4 and Joey Ford added an empty netter in the waning moments, the celebration began as 35 years and 500 wins was a reality for a great hockey program, a great hockey town, who was able to come cheer a great accomplishment for everyone who has stepped on the ice as a player, coach, referee [you too Larry !] and the fans, young and older, like myself who enjoy making the trip to the Belmont !

McQuillan achieves win # 400 as Mighty Hilltoppers defeat Center !
 | | | Center - 3 |
|
Westmont Hilltop 8 Center 3
BEAVER
The Center Hockey program returned to Class A from a 4 year absence from Varsity competition, when the program exited after the 2002-2003 season. The Trojans have not faired too well with a 0-10-0 mark scoring 24 goals and surrendering 107. With only 13 schools in Class A and the majority of the teams being above average, Center will likely go this season with no wins and if they do claim victory, it will likely be against a doormat team out of the playoff picture. The unfortunate part about it is that Center is a prime candidate to play developmental hockey or Junior Varsity, which is what the Open Division was supposed to be and not a feasting ground for the sandbagging AAA sized schools & West Virginia schools to pile up statistics so they can see them in the Post Gazette. Quigley, who Center leading scorer Sean Wormald played for two seasons, opted to go to the Open Division and use players from outside the Quigley School District, which should be considered an amateur team and like the other 8 impure teams in the Open Division have no business competing in High School Hockey.
Westmont Hilltop began play in the 1980-81 season at the War Memorial shortly after the Johnstown area lost the Jets professional and the name McQuillan shortly made an impact in the player ranks with the program
although Art McQuillan did not play for the Hilltoppers, brothers Pat, Mickey and Kevin did and some played for their brother, which is very interesting and I am not sure happens a lot. The Mighty Hilltoppers have been traditionally winners and they do it their way a/k/a Art McQuillans way. The Westmont family has tradition, have loads of fun, a long line of brothers who have come through, a Penguins Cup in 2003, a great rivalry with Bishop McCort [which is maybe one of the best of all of Interscholastic Hockey] and they have Art McQuillan, who is in rare company of coaches, who have last 15 + years including Meadvilles Jamie Plunkett, Shalers Ron Steedle, Chartiers Valleys Eddie Schultz and maybe a handful of others who dont come to mind. The opportunity to win 400 games is an important milestone, not only for the coach, but for the program, the has two more McQuillans on the way in Arts sons Lane 6 and Cullen 9 to carry the tradition of their father. So sludgin trudging the Mighty Hilltoppers hit the ice and there was something special in the air at Beaver Ice Complex at Bradys Run Park with the Tribune Democrats Mike Mastovich and the Super Techno Doug Heck making the trip to Beaver County, all the way from Johnstown, and the Super Techno also sampled the freshly baked Chocolate Chip cookies from the Beaver County Ice Complexs refreshment stand.
In the opening period, Westmont and Center traded goals as Centers Sean Wormald scored just 30 seconds in to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead. Alex Rohal tied it for Westmont on the power play at 8:53 to tie the score 1-1. Center regained the lead as Zach Morrison scored less than a minute later at 7:56. Kyle Harnish tied the score at 6:16 for the Hilltoppers at 2-2. Shots were surprisingly 8-7 in favor of the Trojans.
Westmont coach King Arthur McArthur McQuillan made a switch between the pipes inserting Ian OBrien for backup Brock Rozich. The Mighty Hilltoppers opened the period on the power play and Chad OBrien beat the Center goaltender Justin Gantz on the short side to give WH the lead 3-2. At 7:45 Kyle Hardish scored a nice goal on a drop pass from Chris Reid, which is typical Art McQuillan hockey to make it 4-2. Brendan Boyle circled around in the Center end and the lofted a wrist shot past Trojan goaltender Justin Gantz with 6:23 to make it 5-2. WH held a 22-4 shot advantage in the middle period.
On top the third period and Steve Kohlers wrist shot clanged off the left post and trickled past Gantz to make it 6-2. At 11:46 Center scored as Sean Wormald picked up his second goal. At 11:31, Will Page converted a nice pass from Brendan Boyle on the power play to make it 7-3. Boyle closed out the scoring with 1:13 to play beating Justin Gantz on a wrist shot from in between the circles to make it an 8-3 final. All of the Hilltoppers contributed and gave their coach his 400th victory of all-time.

Winter Classic too !
Bethel Park and Mt Lebanon will play their regular season finale at the South Park outdoor hockey rink on February 28th at 8:00 PM. Both schools have clinched playoff spots in the upcoming Class AAA Penguins Cup playoffs and will be looking to replicate the Buffalo - Pittsburgh game played on New Year's day.
The paths of Interscholastic Hockey began 37 years ago when I first met Jamie Cummings, who was a goaltender for Mt Lebanon playing at the Alpine Ice Chalet in the first season. At the time, Mt Lebanon hockey prided itself on defense and great goaltending and that tradition continues today as the # 2 seed Blue Devils prepare to take their run at the 2008 Penguins Cup AAA title. Tonight, another first in Western Pennsylvania High School Hockey as Cummings son, Chris and teammate Robbie Behling [pictured above], owner of eight shutouts this season will take on rival Bethel Park in an outdoor Charity Classic at South Park OUTDOOR rink off Corrigan Road.
The idea came from the Pittsburgh Penguins / Buffalo Sabres Winter Classic game in January in Buffalo. Blue Devils coach Paul Taibi and Hawks coach Jim McVay headed up the effort to have the game benefit Junenile Diabetes, so the $ 5 admission will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, headed by Jamie Cummings, who son Chris is a diabetic, along with coach McVay and Taibi. Pa Hockey is donating $ 58 to the effort and will be on hand to cover the action !

Where are they now ? Onward and Upward - 2008 - 2009
Every year, Pa Hockey searches far and wide for former Pa Hockey Interscholastic Hockey players who are now continuing their careers at the Junior A and NCAA Division Collegiate level. We have compiled our list and the results are in. Now we may miss a player or two on this list, so let us know if we ommitted anyone from this prestigious list for 2008 - 2009.
We found 39 Players in Division 1 Hockey and we found 57 Players in Junior A Hockey. This is a little below the average in total than over the past five years as we usually find over 100 players. Enjoy the list of Onward and Upward for 2008-2009 !

Western Pa Hockey 2009 – 10 Interscholastic Preview CLASS AAA
Seneca Valley’s Logan Pfeffer can convert a breakaway or wide open chance nine out every ten times in his head and is also pretty good at doing it in person as well. For that one time he missed the open opportunity in overtime at the Mellon Arena against Shaler and then Shane Shiring scored to propel the Titans to their 1st Penguins Cup title in 38 years, it has made the Raiders a hungrier team in the two pre-season contests and also influence the coaches to rank Seneca Valley the # 1 Team in Western Pa Hockey. The Raiders return Pfeffer, goaltender Ryan Schutte, Brandon Platt, Tyler Messica and others in an attempt to return to the Penguins Cup in 2010. Shaler fell short and they were closer than many think to unseating LaSalle as Pennsylvania Class AAA Champions and return Zac Lynch, Patrick Schaefer and Shane Shiring to try to repeat. Upper St Clair returns e Matt Wregget to bolster its Semi-Final appearance from a year ago with James Kline and rising underclassmen Justin Selep and C.J. Murray to raise the Panthers chances for a Penguins Cup. North Allegheny has Lindsay Holdcroft back between the pipes and Tyler Wright and James Ogle to lead a stong contingent for the Tigers in 2010.
Pine Richland lost a little luster from a year ago missing the Penguins Cup for the first time in four years, but Nolan Trombetta, Bryan Watt and goaltender Dan Szymnaski will lead Richland this year to return to form. Bethel Park, McDowell, and Canon McMillan round out the Elite 8 in Class AAA.

CLASS AA
Latrobe has ruled the Pennsylvania Class AA crown for the past two years and according to the coaches that reigh is coming to an end. The Wildcats return Zach LaDuke, Jayson Angus and Dillon Hunter and shoud be a very good team in Class AA.
Peters Township is the coaches choice to unseat Latrobe and the Indians will have Matt Lison from Canevin joining a potent attack with Kevin Hough and Jake Boss in front of goaltender Matt Madore. Montour returns Michael Zagari, Zach Milnarcik and Andy Beck to try to lead the Spartans back to the Penguins Cup final. Meadville will have to regain the scoring touch with returnees Bill Espy, Dean Wisinski and Drew Finton leading the Bulldogs who are now on a 7 year drought since their last State Championship. Canevin is a team that keeps knocking on the Penguins Cup door and will rely on Vince Nicollella, Frankie Vance and Jon Kostial to lead another run at the Penguins Cup. West Allegheny, Franklin Regional and Moon round out the Elite 8.

CLASS A
Mars won their first Penguins Cup in school history a year ago after some mid-season turmoil and a coaching change. The Planets appear to be favored again as goaltender Tyler Stepke, Michael Mazzotta and Tyler Whiteford lead a strong team in to the Class A season. Serra Catholic returns Erik Manetta and Jarrett Ruchka to a team that fell short to rivals Bishop McCort in the Semi-Finals. The Crimson Crushers will lean on the goaltending of Jimmy Stenger and offense of Bryan Scott, Zach Barto and Dane Domonkos and should be a strong final 4 candidate. The newcomer to Class A is Kittanning and the Wildcats are an interesting choice in their first season in this classification with Willy Koster and brothers Jurgen and Deiter along with Troy Schall to run the table against a stronger Class A field. Hampton’s hopes rest with the goaltending of Sam Wilson and an offense led by Alex Mueller to round out the top 5. Westmont-Hilltop, Knoch and Quaker Valley are all teams who should finish in the Elite 8 in 2009-2010.
