2007 Chicago Showcase – Finals
BENSENVILLE, ILLINOIS –

The 2007 Chicago Showcase between Team Wisconsin and Team Pittsburgh features two states that have ties of one of the most monumental moments in National Hockey League History for the Pittsburgh Penguins, when one of Wisconsin’s favorite sons Badger Bob Johnson led the Penguins to the 1991 Stanley Cup after years of service to the University of Wisconsin Badger hockey and to USA Hockey. After the greatest moment in United States Hockey history winning gold in the 1980 Olympics, growth of hockey in the USA exploded to the far reaches of the lakes of Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota and hotbeds such as Boston and the Northeast to places across the country. Today, 43 states across the United States compete for State Championships in places such as New Mexico, Florida, Texas, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Washington, just to name a few, which is a testimony to the growth of the sport and for this event, the Chicago Showcase is really a celebration of Interscholastic hockey played in those aforementioned states.

Team Wisconsin Head Coach Mike Calouri has been with the program for eight years now and hails from Madison after coaching for a couple of perennial powers and has dedicated his time to the Team Wisconsin program. Wisconsin advanced to the finals in 2005, only to fall to Minnesota 4-3 in the finals of the Chicago Showcase. He described to me the process of the playoff round as a ‘dogfight’ and it certainly was for Red to advance to these finals prior to defeating North New England 6-1 and Ohio 7-0. Wisconsin opened the tournament with a 4-2 loss to Minnesota and a tie with Northern New England 3-3 and then in one of the best hockey games of this tournament defeated defending Chicago Showcase champions New Jersey 4-2 in a nailbitter that went down to the final minute a one-goal game.

Pittsburgh’s plight was similar, but has been a process of 23 years of first class service to Team Pittsburgh from General Manager Dave Klasnick, who passed the baton to Gina Colligan this season and unbeknownst to her would end with a joy ride to the championship under a team headed by Bethel Park Head Coach Jim McVay. The Team Pittsburgh hockey community stretches from the shores of Lake Erie to State College and throughout Western Pennsylvania and really has been boosted by the Mario Lemieux affect, which has resulted in rinks throughout the region and is evident throughout the lineup of Team Pittsburgh. Boys from places like Bethel Park, Freeport, North Allegheny, Meadville, West Allegheny, Franklin Regional, Mt Lebanon, Greensburg CC, Central Catholic, Montour, Serra Catholic, Pine Richland, Seneca Valley are the names we are accustomed to seeing their names with but representing Team Pittsburgh and Western PA Hockey is the unified goal of these young men.

At 13:32 of the opening period, Wisconsin won the face-off cleanly and Ted Falk had a chance on a partial break and North Allegheny Max Richards was equal to the task. Pittsburgh’s first good chance came at 9:45 as Meadville’s Morgan Nickerson made his way through the Wisconsin D and fired a wrist shot and Bulldog teammate Luke Killmeyer pounced on the rebound, but goaltender Alan Armour made two nice saves. Pittsburgh’s inability to clear the puck out of the zone almost cost the a goal, but Mt Lebanon’s Mike Roman made a nice defensive play to clear the puck to safety. Pittsburgh took a bad offensive zone penalty with 21 seconds left in the first period. Shots on goal in the first period were Wisconsin 14 Pittsburgh 16 in a scoreless tie.

On the power play, Wisconsin worked the puck to the bottom of the circle to Ian Andrews at 16:45 to Ian Andrews and Max Richards came up with a big save. Wisconsin took a penalty at 16:25 to eliminate the power play. At 14:19 of the second period West Allegheny’s Ryan Kumpmiller spotted Pine Richland’s Phil Trombetta at the right face-off circle, who blasted a snapshot over the glove hand of Armour to give Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead. Pittsburgh went on power play at 13:51, with a chance to go up two and did an unreal job setting up plays and shots, but Armour came up big and Wisconsin survived down by one. With 7:40 to go in the 2nd period, Pittsburgh went back on the power play and increased its man advantage at 6:33 to a 5 0n 3 and a key moment is this championship. At 6:09 of the 2nd a penalty shot was awarded to Wisconsin’s Ricky Wozniak after being hauled down on a partial breakaway and he scored on the forehand beating Max Richards to tie the score at one apiece. Pittsburgh came back as scored on the power play on a pretty passing play as West Allegheny’s Ryan Kumpfmiller scored at 5:13 set up by Meadville’s Morgan Nickerson to give Pittsburgh a 2-1 lead. Wisconsin outmanned Pittsburgh to the zone and was abale to tie the game at 3:19 as Keith Clawson scored finding a loose puck and chipping it past Richards. Pittsburgh went back on the power play at 3:0. Pittsburgh was really sloppy in its own end and Max Richards came up with a big save and apparently the official thought Wisconsin was overzealous and gave Pittsburgh a 5 on 3 and they converted as Meadville’s Morgan Nickerson scored from the bottom of the circle at 1:21 low on the ice on a pass from West Allegheny’s Ryan Kumpfmiller to give Pittsburgh a 3-2 lead. Shots on goal in the 2nd period were Pittsburgh with 20 and Wisconsin with 16.

On to the third period and with 14:05 to go Wisconsin went on the power play with an opportunity to get the equalizer, which was killed by Pittsburgh. With 10:29 to go Wisconsin got a gift call for a power play chance and Pittsburgh killed it off surviving several good chances for Wisconsin. With 7:42 to play after a terrific play by Meadville’s Morgan Nickerson to keep the play in the zone and freeze the Wisconsin defense, Seneca Valley’s Nick Jones fired a wrist shot from the right circle on a super pass by Bethel’s Bryan Brown to give Pittsburgh a 4-2 lead. With 7:00 to play, Wisconsin answered as Alex Gerke scored on a long shot from the point to cut the lead to 4-3. With 1:11 to go Pittsburgh failed to clear and Wisconsin made them pay as they found the loose puck on the doorstep as Alex West poked it home to tie the game 4-4 and the game went to overtime. Shots Wisconsin had 24 and Pittsburgh with only 4 as Red dominated the third period.

With 7:14 to go in overtime, Wisconsin was whistled for too many men on the ice and Pittsburgh was unable to really mount any good scoring chances. David Spadacene had a breakaway with :03 left and Alan Amour made a great glove save. Wisconsin was whistled for a penalty on the play. The overtime period ended and the teams play a 5-minute overtime would be played. 3:43 Bannon breakaway stopped by Amour…with 3:05 to play Logan Bannon apparently scored the game winner, but it was ruled the net was moved before the puck went in. With 2:33 to play, Wisconsin’s Ryan Smet got behind the Pittsburgh defense and Max Richards made a great glove save.
32 Morgan Nickerson great chance and puck just went wide. After the two overtime periods and two tremendous teams battling tooth and nail for a better part of 5 periods, tournament officials decided to have this one decided by a shootout.

The goaltenders in the shootout were Alan Armour of Hayward, Wisconsin HS and Max Richards, from the Pennsylvania AAA State Champions North Allegheny Tigers. Both young men made countless stops in this contest and were to be counted on for more heroics in the 5-man shootout. Pittsburgh shot first, giving Wisconsin the opportunity to counter. First shooter Morgan Nickerson missed for Pittsburgh, as did Ryan Smet for Wisconsin. Pine Richland’s Phil Trombetta and Central Catholic’s Chris Urso scored and couple with misses by Wisconsin gave Pittsburgh a 2-0 lead. Wisconsin facing sudden death scored on two of their last three chances to forge a 2-2 tie as Tedd Falk and
Ricky Wozniak came through in the clutch.

There seemed to be confusion as to the shootout procedure as both teams used some of the same players from the original shootout. After four consecutive misses by both teams, Pittsburgh Central Catholic’s Chris Urso and Wisconsin’s Zachary Kohn from Arrowhead HS traded goals as the score remained tied at 3-3 until the 5th Sudden Death shooter. Pittsburgh Central Catholic’s Chris Urso made a nifty move to score his third shootout goal to give Pittsburgh a 5-4 lead. Zachary Kohn shot again and this time North Allegheny’s Max Richard’s stoned him giving Pittsburgh a 5-4 win in the shootout and a 5-4 win over Wisconsin in as thrilling of a hockey game as you will ever see. Pittsburgh captured their first Chicago Showcase National Title in 23 years with an impressive run of wins over North Dakota, Illinois, Missouri, New York and Wisconsin. As the cell phones rang and the joy erupted you can’t help but feel a special congratulations to General Manager Dave Klasnick, who has conducted this Team Pittsburgh program with class from the beginning in 1984 and was not able to attend the finals, but as always was more thrilled for the 20 young men who accomplished their goal of bringing Pittsburgh a hockey title for the ages !

2007 Chicago Showcase – Semi-Finals
BENSENVILLE, ILLINOIS –

The interesting part about the Semi-Finals of the Chicago Showcase is the absence of hoopla that is evident the first four days of the event. Gone is the cookout out front of the Edge in Bensenville, many of the 24 teams in the event are headed back home, many of the scouts are no longer present and the excitement in the building of game after game of action has diminished. Left are four teams, including three of four who realistically could not have figured to be a part of the championship chase. Wisconsin coach Mike Calouri has been here before and knows the drill of what it takes to be champions of a National High School Hockey Tournament, but for Ohio (C Bracket Champions and upset winner over # 1 seed Michigan), New York (B Bracket upset winner over Minnesota) and Team Pittsburgh, it’s uncharted waters.

Pittsburgh did make the finals in 1999, with a group of a half dozen or so Division 1 studs, only to lose to Minnesota. As described by one of the long-time followers of the Chicago Showcase, Team Pittsburgh is that pest little brother that just won’t go away to the Interscholastic hockey powers like Minnesota, Michigan, North Dakota, Massachusetts, Northern New England, and Illinois, all whom are headed home and have no shot at the 2007 Chicago Showcase title. Team New York, which is comprised of players from clubs in the Long Island area knocked off Minnesota in the Quarter-Finals and is looking for their first trip to the finals in recent memory if ever. Team NY defeated Massachusetts 7-3, lost to Connecticut 3-2, iced Washington 5-1 and defeated Minnesota to get to this point.

So before an intimate gathering of less than 50 patrons in the AHAI rink in Bensenville the game was under way. With 14:28 to go in the opening period New York got the first opportunity on the power play and was evened up at 13:08 on a call on NY. Another penalty on New York at 10:51, put Pittsburgh on their first unabbreviated power play, which was nullified by a Pittsburgh penalty. At 6:46 of the opening period, Alfred Vitsentzos scored on a tap in rebound as a result of sloppy defensive zone play by Pittsburgh. Moments later at 6:17 New York scored again as Jon Weintraub scored on a long shot from the center point. Pittsburgh came right back at 5:01 as Bethel Park’s David Spadacene scored on his own rebound on the backhand set up by BP’s Kenny Lehmann to make it 2-1. Pittsburgh went back on the power play with 3:24 to go and could not capitalize and disturbingly did not get the play set up in the zone real well.
Pittsburgh outshot NY 10-4 in the opening period, but trailed on the scoreboard 2-1.

Pittsburgh didn’t take long to tie the contest 2-2 as Logan Bannon scored on a David Spadacene rebound at 16:06. Moments later Bethel Park’s Bryan Brown just missed giving Pittsburgh the lead at 15:41. Mt Lebanon’s Mike Roman gave Pittsburgh its first lead at 13:56 of the period on a long slapshot to the stick side of Keith Kincaid to make the score 3-2. David Spadacene had a great opportunity to extend the lead at 10:21, but Kincaid made a spectacular save. After the teams traded power play chances, New York tied the score on a great individual effort by Stephen Mele, who burst don the left side and beat Mt Lebanon’s Robbie Behling on a backhand with 3:49 remaining in the 2nd period. Pittsburgh came right back as Pine Richland’s Phil Trombetta converted a beautiful cross ice pass from West Allegheny’s Ryan Kumpmiller to give Pittsburgh a 4-3 lead with 1:34 to play in the period. Pittsburgh did not do a very good job backchecking or playing defense and New York’s Michael Bochichio made them pay scoring on a turning backhand with under a minute to play in the 2nd period and the score was tied again 4-4. Pittsburgh outshot New York 19-13 in the middle frame.

New York power play with 14:10 to go in regulation and Pittsburgh showed great resilience to kill it. With 11:45 to play in regulation, Pittsburgh went back on the power play and had several good chances but Kincaid made several nice saves. New York went on the power play and it wasn’t long as they took a penalty just ten seconds into the man advantage to nullify the power play at 7:17. With 6:01 to play, Pittsburgh would have a golden chance to take the lead on the power play on a 4 on3 and after some nice puck movement West Allegheny’s Ryan Kumpfmiller moved the puck to the front of the net and Central Catholic’s Chris Urso would not be denied fighting off two defenders to score a power play goal and give Pittsburgh a 5-4 lead with 5:36 to go in regulation. With 3:24 to go. Pittsburgh went back on the power play, with a chance to extend the lead, but could not capitalize. Pittsburgh held on in the final minute scoring a 5-4 victory over New York and advance on to play Wisconsin in the championship. Pittsburgh outshot NY 13-4 in the 3rd period and 32-17 for the game. Team Pittsburgh returns to the final for the first time in 8 years seeking its first ever Chicago Showcase National Invitational Championship in 23 years.

Pittsburgh overcomes Missouri upset bid & marches on to Semis
Pittsburgh 2 Missouri 1

2007 Chicago Showcase – Quarter-Finals
BENSENVILLE, ILLINOIS –

Team Pittsburgh returns to the quarter-finals of the Chicago Showcase, where a year ago they did not play their best game against Team Tri-State [now Midwest], but was able to come away with a victory to advance to the Semi-Finals, only to lose to North Dakota. Head Coach Jim McVay has been a little superstitious throughout the tournament sticking to the routine laid out with team functions and this has really helped to mould this unit. Pittsburgh has just gotten better as the games have progressed with wins over North Dakota and Illinois. Missouri was able to win the B Bracket with wins over Colorado (2-0) and Indiana (4-1) and a tie with Team Midwest (4-4) in the final game of the preliminary round. The Mid-States Hockey Association of Missouri has produced some pretty good hockey clubs over the past few years in CBC and DesMet, who have dominated the landscape of hockey in that State and travel to outlying areas to play pretty good competition.

Missouri got the first opportunity on the power play at 13:43 , which was nullified at 12:46 by a penalty. Pittsburgh had an abbreviated power play and Bethel Park’s Bryan Brown had a point blank chance with the penalty running out was stopped by goaltender Corey Rickermann. Pittsburgh had several shots but could not dent the Missouri goaltender and Missouri went on the power play with 5:32 to go in the opening period and as the penalty ended Pete Bensing’s shot from the center point through traffic bounced past North Allegheny’s Max Richards with 3:30 to go to give Missouri a 1-0 lead. Pittsburgh’s very next shift was terrific as they continue to test Missouri goaltender Corey Rickermann to no avail. With 55 seconds to go in the period, Pittsburgh went on the power play and could not score. Shots in the first period were 19 – 3 in favor of Pittsburgh, but the scoreboard read 1-0 in favor of Missouri.

Pittsburgh went on a 5 on 3 at 16:39, but Rickermann kept them out. Pittsburgh kept working hard and forced another man advantage with 11:23 to go and again after lots of shots could not score. Pine Richland’s Phil Trombetta was robbed by a glove save at 8:59. With 5:26 to go Missouri got a gift penalty putting them on the power play and Bethel Park’s Kenny Lehmann was in on a shorthanded breakaway and stopped by the Missouri goaltender with 5:01 to play. Pittsburgh was whistled with 4:10 to go for too many men on the ice creating a 5 on 3 for 44 seconds and a crucial part of this hockey game in my opinion. Pittsburgh showed some inspired penalty killing and Missouri showed an extreme lack of skill and inability to move the puck. With 1:04 to go another chance for Pittsburgh and with 18 ticks to go another Missouri penalty created a 5 on 3, which would carry over to the 3rd period. Pittsburgh continued to dominate play outshooting Missouri 15 – 9 in the 2nd period.

On to the third and Pittsburgh starts with a 5 on 3 power play and the game on the line. Pittsburgh continued to pressure but could not score and Missouri survived and clung to a 1-0 advantage. With 11:31 to go another power play chance for Pittsburgh, which increased to a 5 on 3 with 10:58 to play. Pittsburgh piled up the shots and was given a weak penalty at 9:33 and Pittsburgh got the break they need as Pine Richland’s Phil Trombetta sprung Bethel Park’s Kenny Lehmann, who buried a wrist shot to tie the game. Moments later at 8:40 Meadville’s Morgan Nickkerson broke down the left side and buried a wrist shot on the ice to give Pittsburgh a 2-1 lead. With 5:56 to go. Missouri went on the power play with a chance to tie the game, but Pittsburgh’s penalty killing was too strong and they held off Missouri for a hard fought 2-1 victory and advanced to the semi-finals against New York tomorrow morning. Pittsburgh outshot Missouri 24-6 in the 3rd period and 58-18 for the game.

2007 Chicago Showcase
BENSENVILLE, ILLINOIS -

Team Pittsburgh opened the 23rd Annual Chicago Showcase with 4-1 loss to a very strong and talented Michigan team and rebounded to defeat nemesis North Dakota 3-2, holding off a 3rd period rally by the Sioux and killing he clock. The opponent for a crucial play-in game for the Elite 8 of the 2007 Chicago Showcase is the host of the annual tournament Team Illinois. The winner of this hockey game will claim the # 3 seed in tomorrow’s playoff round and the loser MAY be playing for pride. This year’s Illinois squad is comprised of some familiar teams for those who follow Interscholastic Hockey Nationwide in New Trier Green, Fenwick, Glenbrook North and Loyola Gold and the Illinois squad is headed by Bob Melton of New Trier. Pittsburgh Head Coach Jim McVay knows the names as his Bethel Park squad has faced New Trier and Fenwick over the past few years and is very familiar with the caliber of hockey needed to be successful against them. Illinois opened the Showcase with a 6-4 win over North Dakota and then succumbed to Michigan 4-2 after holding an early 2-0 advantage. Donned in their Virginia Tech attire, coaches McVay and Fryer went to work to help Pittsburgh advance.

With 14:59 remaining in the opening period, Illinois had the first opportunity on the power play and Pittsburgh killed it. Meadville’s Morgan Nickerson had a partial break at 9:35 only to be turned aside by Bartlett’s Steven Tomczyck. Central Catholic’s Chris Urso almost gave Pittsburgh the lead but was turned aside by Tomczyck. Pittsburgh’s first opportunity came on the power play at 7:45, which Illinois methodically killed off. Pittsburgh got another opportunity at 2:19, which was killed by Illinois, but West Allegheny’s Ryan Kumpfmiller nearly scored in the closing seconds on a strong move to the net. Pittsburgh held a 6-3 shot advantage after the opening period.

At 14:28 of the second frame, Bethel Park’s David Spadacene just missed on a play set up by teammate Kenny Lehmann and Franklin Regional’s Tim McDonough with a couple of nice lead passes. End to end action ensued in the 2nd as Pittsburgh had the better of the play. At 5:02 remaining, Bethel’s David Spadacene thought he scored, but the puck hit the far post and the game remained scoreless. Moments later at 4:48, Pittsburgh went back on the power play. Freeport’s Zach Hepler’s drive from the left point rung off the crossbar at 4:10. Pittsburgh struck first as Meadville’s Morgan Nickerson fired a laser pass to Bethel’s Logan Bannon, who chipped it past the Illinois goaltender for a 1-0 Pittsburgh lead. Then with 27 ticks remaining in the period Pittsburgh scored again as West Allegheny’s Ryan Kumpfmiller crashed to the net and took a beautiful feed from Pine Richland’s Phil Trombetta for a huge goal and a 2-0 lead. Pittsburgh outshot Illinois 18-5 in the middle period heading to the ice cut.

With 15:04 to go in regulation, Fenwick’s Nick Powers had a great chance, but Mt Lebanon’s goaltender Robbie Behling made a super stop to keep the score 2-0. Illinois kept up the pressure and almost scored moments later. With 10:17 to go Pittsburgh was whistled for a penalty putting Illinois on the power play and a chance to get back in the game and it would be Pittsburgh who would ring the bell as Central’s Chris Urso led Meadville’s Morgan Nickerson, who was in on the breakaway and slipped a backhand through the 5-hole of Illinois goaltender Tomczyk with 8:36 to go to make it 3-0. Pittsburgh didn’t waste any time scoring again as Pine Richland’s Phil Trombetta pounced on a Bethel’s Bryan Brown rebound at 7:58 and Pittsburgh was now up 4-0. Fenwick’s K.C. Madock found a loose puck and beat Robbie Behling to make it 4-1 with 4:48 to go and break the shutout. Bethel’s David Spadacene had great chance to score on a breakaway on a great lead pass by Freeport’s Zach Hepler and was stopped on a great save by Tomczyk at 3:09. Pittsburgh would finish it off with a very good defensive effort exemplified by the 36-17 shot advantage including 12-9 in the 3rd period for an impressive 4-1 pasting of Illinois to capture the 3rd seed and advance to the round of 8 for the 4th time in five years.

Pittsburgh holds off North Dakota rally for a 3-2 victory !
Pittsburgh 3 North Dakota 2

2007 Chicago Showcase
BENSENVILLE, ILLINOIS -

Team Pittsburgh opened the 23rd Annual Chicago Showcase with 4-1 loss to a very strong and talented Michigan team. Head Coach Jim ‘Mort’ McVay and assistant Dave ‘the Boy Wonder’ Fryer are pretty studious coaches and had an opportunity to scout North Dakota and Illinois on Wednesday afternoon and any time you give good coaches an chance to see their next opponent, the adjustments and game plan can be made. This is exactly what the coaches hoped to accomplish and from knowing these two guys for a few years, I can tell you that they were pretty confident that Pittsburgh could get back on track. History is another story as North Dakota has been a thorn in Pitssburgh’s side the past few years in the A Bracket, most recently knocking off Team Pittsburgh to advance to the finals of the 2006 Chicago Showcase, were they were defeated by New Jersey.

Pittsburgh came out flying in the opening minutes as there appeared to be a mismatch in speed as they caught North Dakota flat footed a couple of times. Seneca Valley’s Matt Jarrett chipped a lead pass to Central Catholic’s Chris Urso, who made a great move on ND goaltender Jamall Wold on a deke and beat him on the forhand for a shorthanded goal and a 1-0 lead at 7:01. Pittsburgh continued to pile on the shots in the opening frame and Bethel Park’s Bryan Brown scored on his own rebound at 5:58 to make it 2-0 in favor of Pittsburgh. With the shots 14-7 in favor of Pittsburgh in the first, a huge one came off the stick of Freeport’s Zach Hepler as his long wrist shot from the right point made it’s way through traffic and past Wold on the stick side at knee level to give Pittsburgh a 3-0 lead with 4:21 to go in the first period.

North Dakota was able to muster some offense in the 2nd period as they began to pressure Pittsburgh, but North Allegheny’s Max Richards came up big at 7:53 of the period stopping the best Sioux scoring chance of the hockey game at 7:53. Pittsburgh countered with some offense of its own as well in the period resulting in a power play with a little over two minutes remaining and continued to control the play, but could not score. North Dakota had a golden opportunity with a shorthanded 2 on 1, but Seneca Valley’s Nick Jones made a terrific play to intercept a pass and Pittsburgh headed to the ice cut with a 3-0 lead and 26-15 shot advantage through two periods.

One of the most dangerous leads in hockey is 3-0 and Pittsburgh had many opportunities in the 2nd period to extend the lead to 4-0. North Dakota was able to get on the board at 13:53 as Zach Welding got behind the Pittsburgh defense and beat Max Richards to cut the lead to 3-1. Pittsburgh took a penalty and North Dakota capitalized as Zachery Miller was on the back door and roofed a pass from Scott Samuelson for a power play goal and the lead was now only 3-2 for Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh took another penalty giving ND a chance to tie the game, but the Sioux took a hooking call behind the play to nullify the man advantage at 9:43. Pittsburgh took another penalty at 8:37, but a very questionable call and break for Pittsburgh came at 7:15, which kindof killed the North Dakota at that point of the game. Pittsburgh and North Dakota battled over the last half of the third period and each team had their chances and the score remained 3-2 in favor of Pittsburgh. With :52 to go in regulation, Pittsburgh was whistled for too many men creating a 6 on 4 power play for North Dakota. Pittsburgh’s defense and Max Richards stiffened and they held the Sioux off the board to earn a 3-2 victory over nemesis North Dakota.

A special report for the 2006 Chicago Showcase

Many people who attended the 2005 Chicago Showcase walked away amazed after Team Pittsburgh's stunning four goal rally late in the 3rd period to defeat defending champions of the Chicago Showcase California 5-4. This game would serve as a rematch of sorts as California would have a chance at redemption from a year ago. Should Team Pittsburgh be able to defeat California again, they wuld clinch a spot in Saturday's Quarter-Finals and face Minnesota, who soundly defeated Pittsburgh a year ago in the Semi-Finals, for the top spot in the A bracket.

California took advantage of an early power play at 11:22 of the opening period scoring on a wrist shot from the center point, which eluded Bryan Ross for a 1-0 lead. Pittsburgh would answer as Phil Trombetta would bang home a Matt Bartkowski rebound to knot the score at one apiece. Pittsburgh held a 12-7 shot advantage in the opening period.

On to the second period and Pittsburgh would play opportunist shorthanded as Josh Fodor buried a snapshot high over the glove side of Adam Krauss at 16:22 after a terrific steal and feed by Shane Ferguson to give Pittsburgh a 2-1 lead. Kruase robbed Brendan Conlon with a sliding save with 9:18 remaining to keep it a one goal game as Pittsburgh increased the territorial advantage at 7-4 for the second period.

Pittsburgh would start the third period with a fibe minute power play which was partially killed off by some aqgressive penalty killing by Team California. Pittsburgh continue to dominate play in the third period and capitalized on their next man advantage as Matt Bartkowski scored on a big slapshot after a perfect feed from Phil Trombetta at 11:51 to make it 3-1 and again at 10:23 as Josh Mandic coverted a cross ice feed from Kevin Miller to increase the lead to 4-1. Team Pittsburgh outshot California 11-3 in the final period and continued to pressure them in mistakes. Timmy O'Brien hit the post on a nice setup by Chris Urso at 7:09, but Alan Halipin would put an exclamation point on a 5-1 victory for Team Pittsburgh just moments later as he intercepted an errant clearing pass and beat Krause to the glove side. The win sets up a battle for the top spot in the A bracket against Minnesota tomorrow evening at the Edge in Bensenville.

CHICAGO -

A special report from Pa Hockey

So Team Pittsburgh defeated New York and California in the opening two games of the 2006 Chicago Showcase and with a 2-0 record to guarantee a spot in the quarter-finals on Saturday. Now the fun is to begin as they would have the honor of sharing the ice with Team Minnesota, the same team who has won the Chicago Showcase countless times over the years under the late great coach Ted Brill and more recently under Dave Hendrickson, who is a joy to talk to every time one comes to the rink and I have gotten to know over the past few years.

Last year's schooling of Team Pittsburgh 7-1 in the semi-finals would be a reminder to the returning players of last years team of the significance of Minnesota High School Hockey to the rest of the United States as a leader of the sport and how programs should model and conduct themselves in this sport. As a casual fan its just a thrill to watch our boys from Western Pa match up against the 'Institution' of Interscholastic Sports in America. Former Team Pittsburgh players Ryan Vesely of Greensburg CC and Chris Perry of Hempfield were on hand
with their Team Pittsburgh to cheer on the team, seven years removed from Team Pittsburgh's lone trip to the finals in 1999, a 6-2 setback to no other than Team Minnesota.

The early part of this contest consisted of some penalty killing by Team Pittsburgh of the lethal Minnesota power play and some great goaltending by Thomas Jefferson's Cody Krynock, who is a great story because he didn't start tendinmg goal for the Jaguars until January after a stint on defense. Team Minnesota had a better of the chances and the shot advantage at 10-6 but the opening 17 minutes was a fast paced scoreless tie.

The second period Team Pttsburgh would get a golden opportunity at 16:07 as Brock Heinauer kept the play alive in the Minnesota zone and Chris Urso found Timmy O'Brien on the back door who just missed and Urso banged home the rebound to give Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead. Minnesota kept plugging away at Pittsburgh and capitalized on a turnover as Brian McMillin fired a low slapshot past Cody Krynock at 11:57 to tie the game at one apiece. Pittsburgh failed to clear the zone again at 5:26 and McMillin was open again on the weak side beating Krynock on a slapper to give Minnsota a 2-1 lead. Pittsburgh did start to get more chances late in the period with a 12-11 shot advantage and almost ties it at the buzzer as Timmy O'Brien and Brock Heinauer both had great chances, but Minnesota goaltender Alex Petersen made a spectacular save throwing his body at the loose puck and keeping Minnesota in front 2-1 at the ice cut.

So Pittsburgh had to be satisfied playing the Minnesota team to a one goal game and could have settled for the great effort guys speech, but this team would be tested even further when they put Minnesota on the power play at 15:17 and then yielded a PPG goal at 14:43 as Alex Braden redirected a pass past Krynock after some excellent puck movement to make it 3-1 in favor of Minnesota. Matt Bartkowski hit both posts on a slapshot at 13:30 and the deficit remained two. Moments later Pittsburgh dug another hole with a penalty at 13:02, but was able to kill it off and gain a little momentum. A power play came their way at 11:26 that turned into a 5 on 3 at 10:19 putting Pittsburgh in a nice position to get back in the game. Then Tean Pittsburgh seized the moment as they moved the puck quickley and Kevin Miller beat Petersen on a wrist shot low to the glove side to cut the lead to 3-2 with 9:05 remaining in a definite change of momentum. Pittsburgh turned up their game and applied the pressure to Minnesota with 6 1/2 left in regulation.

Josh Fodor, who has been part of Team Pittsburgh's best forward lines with Ferguson and Mandic at both ends of the ice showed great patience and found a wide open Kevin Pawlos on the doorstep, who made no mistake and buried a wrist shot high up under the crossbar past Petersen with 4:56 to play to knot the score at 3-3 in a dramatic turnaround. With 3:32 remaining, Josh Mandic gathered the loose puck in the neutral zone and found two streaking linemates creating a 3 on 1 and as Josh Fodor drove the Minnesota defenseman to the net, Shane Ferguson served as the trailer and took a nice feed from Mandic and buried it low to the glove side erupting the Pittsburgh bench and the Team Pittsburgh faithful in attendance giving the a 4-3 lead. Team Pittsburgh played to win in the final minutes and penned up Minnesota in their zone with quick shifts and tenacious forechecking to seal a monumental victory for this team and a watershed win for Western Pennsylvania hockey, who is now on the map and this group can relish an accomplishment 22 years in the making. Coach Paul Taibi showed his class by presenting team manager Dev Klasnick with the game puck for his 22 years of service and class to Team Pittsburgh, who is now the # 1 seed heading to the quarter-finals
of the 2006 Chicago Showcase. Sounds nice..............but it was a great thrill to watch and people from Western Pa should really be proud of this great moment !

CHICAGO -

A special report for Pa Hockey

The day after Team Pittsburgh shocked Team Minnesota in a game with many twists and turns lead the Western Pa contingent to the quarter-finals against Tri-State, who pummeled Team Connecticut 11-1 in the C Bracket finale. Pittsburgh found itself in an interesting position facing a team made up of high school players from Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas, which is essentially the all-star team of the Iowa High School Hockey League, who entered the 1/4 finals with a 4-0-0 record with wins over Ohio, Florida, Northwest and the aformentioned Connecticut, which is hardly the road of Team Pittsburgh.

Early in this contest the casual hockey fan could see that Team Pittsburgh gave Tri-State fits with a superior skill level and speed. With the early domination in territorial play Pittsburgh looked to take advantage, but a couple of ill-advised penalties put Tri State right in the hockey game even though being dominated on the shot total, the score remained scoreless through one period. Teamn Pittsburgh's bestr chance came as Shane Ferguson got behind the Tri-State defense with 1:37 remaining but Nick LeQuire was equal to the task.

Pittsburgh took another penalty early in the second period and it cost them as Bryan Beaman redirected a Geoff Vicek shot from the right point past Bryan Ross high over the glove side to give Tri-State a 1-0 lead and a power play with 15:14 to play in the 2nd period. Tri State put Pittsburgh on the power play at 14:46 and Shane Ferguson tied the score at 1-1 backhanding a Matt Bartkowski rebound past LeQuire. Bryan Ross made a terrific stop from point blank range at 12:33 to keep the 1-1 score. At 9:56, Matt Bartkowski made a good play to settle the puck at the point and move it to Ferguson in the corner, who cycled the puck with Josh Fodor who found a streaking Josh Mandic who made no mistake depositing the puck into an empty net with 9:56 to play and give Pittsburgh its first lead 2-1. The goal was as pretty a passing play as you will see in any hockey game. Pittsburgh put Tri State back on the power play at 9:43 and on a 5 on 3 at 8:56 and gave Tri State a chance to ie the score again, which they did as Derek Kohles banged home a rebound to make it 2-2 with 8:27 to play. As mentioned last night, the line of Fodor, Ferguson and Mandic has been on fire in this tournament and Josh Fodor seized the moment to gain control of this hockey game as he took the puck end-to-end, walked to the middle of the ice and fire a wrist whot high over the glove side of LeQuire, who may have had trouble seeing the shot go in, but Pittsburgh regained the lead 3-2 with 5:20 remaining in the middle period. Pittsburgh went on the power play with 1:37 remaining in the period and Paul Dittrich hit the post with a blistering wrist shot low to the far post and Team Pittsburgh headed to the third period with a slim 3-2 advantage.

Pittsburgh has dominated the third period on this tournament outscoring opponents 8-1 in three games and compiled a staggering shot totoal advantage in those periods. Josh Mandic just missed just thirty seconds in as the puck was just brushed wide by the Tri State goaltender. The play of this hockey game came with 13:38 to play in regulation as Josh Mandic picked the pocket of a Tri State forward in the neutral zone and sent Ferguson and Fodor in on a two on one, which Fodor used Fergy as a decoy and blistered a wrist shot up under the crossbar to give Pittsburgh a semmingly comfortable 4-2 lead. Team Pittsburgh effectively ran the lines and kept the pressure on Tri State, who seemed to struggle against the speed and tenacity of Pittsburgh. Bryan Ross made a real nice save from point blank range with 3:15 to play. Two goals are unsafe because one mistake can put a team right back in the hockey game and that's exactly what happened as after a bad clearing attempt Tri State scored on a rebound to cut the lead to 4-3 with 51 seconds to go. Pittsburgh would shut the door in the final minute as Tri State never got the puck out of their zone and Tean Pittsburgh won a little differently, not playing their best game, but good enough to move on to the semi-finals of the 2006 Chicago Showcase for the second straight year. Mt Lebanon's Matt Bartkowski was named the Most Valuable player of the 2006 Chicago Showcase, with solid play at both ends of the ice in the first four games.

Team Pittsburgh falls short as North Dakota moves on to the finals

CHICAGO -

Special Report to Pa Hockey

North Dakota is facing Pittsburgh for the third time in each of the past three years and the first two meetings in pool play resulted in victory for Team North Dakota, including a 5-4 game a year ago in Pool A play, prior to Pittsburgh running off wins to advance to the Semi-final before bowing to Minnesota. Team North Dakota is unique collection of players from the North Dakota High School Hockey League, in which totals 18 schools from the hockey fanatic areas of eastern North Dakota of Grand Forks and Fargo bordering Minnesota to the far reaches of the flatlands in places like Devil's Lake, Williston, Bismarck and of course Minot. It's a special group of players who represent the pride of North Dakota hockey and the 2006 version has much of the flavor with players who have come together from over 450 miles apart to form the team.

North Dakota battled through the preliminary round after a setback to Michigan in the opening game to mount a big comeback to tie New Jersey after trailing 3-0 and then defeating rival Wisconsin twice on consecutive nights to make their way in to the Semi-Finals. Pittsburgh would be making its second consecutive semi-final appearance and hoping to advance to the finals for the 2nd time in 22 years and the first time since 1999.

North Dakota came out smoking in the opening minute as Cody Krynock made two big saves on good scoring chances and earned a power play opportunity at 16:11. ND's Andrew Peterson scored the games first goal with a wrist shot just inside the far post from the bottom of the circle. A Pittsburgh miscue at 13:34 resulted in another scoring opportunity as North Dakota just missed taking an early two goal advantage. Pittsburgh's hot line of Fodor, Mandic and Ferguson went to work and created the first opportunity just a half a minute later. The momentum from that shift carried Pittsburgh to its first power play at 10:45 and they capitalized as Chris Urso set up on the far boards and threaded a perfect pass to Matt Bartkowski, who blistered a slapshot just inside the post to tie the game at 1-1 at 9:37. North Dakota came right back and pounced on a Pittsburgh miscue as Devil's Lakes Peter Jerome jammed home a loose puck to give ND a 2-1 lead at 9:17. Pittsburgh came back as Dustin Roux weaved through the high slot and set up Zach Hepler, who bombed a snapshot high over the glove side of goaltender Anthony Kringstad to tie the game again at 2-2 with 6:11 to go in period one. Dustin Roux gave Pittsburgh its first lead of the game as he fought off three North Dakota defenders and chipped the puck past Kringstad with 5:36 remaining to make it 3-2. After Pittsburgh killed off a North Dakota power play opportunity, the game had a huge momentum swing as Marc Mikulka took a puck from behind the goal line and banked it off the backside of Cody Krynock with 2:22 left in a wild first period and the score was tied 3-3 as North Dakota outshot Pittsburgh 12-7.

North Dakota played opportunist early in the 2nd period as the Pittsburgh defense mishandled the puck and Mike Harrie scored on a shot from in between the circles with 15 and a half left in period two to make it 4-3. Another bad clearing attempt resulted in disaster for Team Pittsburgh as Dakota's David Hovet swooped in and buried a rebound past Bryan Ross, who replaced Krynock late in the first and now Pittsburgh was in a hole and down 5-3. Pittsburgh picked up their game a this point and pulled back within a goal on the power play as Josh Fodor finished off a nice passing sequence as Timmy O'Brien, Matt Bartkowski, Paul Dittrich and Josh Mandic touched the puck before the goal at 11:09 cut the lead to 5-4. Team Pittsburgh outshot North Dakota 17-7, but goaltender Anthony Kringstad would deny Pittsburgh for the remainder of the period.

On to the third period and while Pittsburgh began to pour the shots on Kringstad, the North Dakota goaltender just seemed to get sharper stopping all 12 Pittsburgh shots in the final period, while North Dakota only managed to post five on Bryan Ross. Josh Fodor nearly tied it with 12:52 to play in regulation on a tip of Shane Ferguson's shot. A Pittsburgh power play ensued but Pittsburgh seemed out of rhythm. The Pittsburgh team's climb would get much steeper as Matt Batrkowski was whistled for a hit from behind resulting in 12 minutes in penalties with 9:44 to play. Unfortunately for Pittsburgh the call was made but the team forged on as their captain could only sit and watch the remaining 10 minutes from the penalty box. Pittsburgh dominated play and their best chance to tie the game came with 3:25 to play as Zach Hepler was in alone but Anthony Kringstad stopped him to keep North Dakota on top 5-4. A play in the final minute was the peak of frustration for Pittsburgh as with a player from North Dakota down behind the net, Josh Mandic had control of the puck coming out of the corner with a golden scoring opportunity and the referee inadvertantly blew the whistle stopping play with 52 seconds left to the dismay of the Pittsburgh bench. Team Pittsburgh pulled their goalie in the final minute and could not get the equalizer ending their dreams of moving onto the finals with a 5-4 setback to North Dakota. Pittsburgh outshot ND 36-24, including 29-12 over the final two periods only scoring one goal on Anthony Kringstadm the North Dakota goaltender from Grafton / Park River, who didn't appear in any of the post season honors in the ND State Tournament, but scored a huge victory for North Dakota hockey.

Team Pittsburgh vs Team Minnesota

Ok so its Sunday morning and while many of us from Western Pennsylvania expected to be in our cars on our way home, instead for the dozen to two dozen of us who started this journey, we all were treated to a real thrill watching our boys from Western Pennsylvania provide a miracle finish against California with three goals in the final 4 ½ to gain a spot besides the mecca of Interscholastic Hockey Minnesota in the 2005 Chicago Showcase semi-finals. Team Pittsburgh has defied the odds with getting here and for more reasons which I will expand upon in this summary.

An opportunity to visit with Minnesota Head Coach David Hendrickson yesterday was a pleasure and discovery as I found that the head man of a powerhouse from this Chicago Showcase once coached Steve Carlson, who played professional hockey and spent some time in Johnstown playing and coaching a team called Bishop McCort to some Pennsylvania State titles. As a gesture of goodwill to the coach was a Pa Hockey Yearbook and one of respect for what Minnesota Interscholastic Hockey has done as a model program for the now 43 states who compete for State Championships across the United States. And an opportunity for Team Pittsburgh to compete against the best the sport has to offer and for all you historians out there, we can point back to the 1999 finals when Pittsburgh went all the way to the finals and lost 6-2.

As Paul Dittrich, who was seriously injured in last night’s game came out to take the warm up, it just was another little reminder of what this means for this group of kids and possibly an inspiration to the other 19 guys of how the belief and will to win can overcome the most trying of circumstances. What gives Pittsburgh a chance is maybe a stellar goaltending performance by Ryan Zapolski or maybe an over achieving group effort, but the best approach would be a simple hockey game of clearing the zone and playing disciplined with 51 minutes of hard work and maybe just maybe they’ll provide some more excitement.

The opening minutes where in the Pittsburgh end and survival. At 13:03, Pittsburgh had their first chance as Mark Polidor broke free and just missed. Minnesota continued their possession game and Pittsburgh kept surviving early on. At 11:27, Minnesota went on the power play and Mark Polidor made as he has this whole tournament another big play forcing the Minnesota defenseman to pull him down nullifying the man advantage. Then a mental mistake as Mike Penkrot left the bench early resulting in another Minnesota power play. With 4:15 remaining in the first, Pittsburgh was whistled for a play after the whistle and then Minnesota was whistled for the same at 3:01. Then at 2:40, Minnesota struck as Jamie Ruff tipped a shot from the point past Ryan Zapolski for a 1-0 lead. A marginal tripping call on Pittsburgh at 2:05 put Team Pittsburgh in a 4 on 4 situation. Ryan Zapolski made his first terrific save with just two ticks left and Minnesota took a very rare undisciplined penalty putting Pittsburgh on the power play to start the second.

At 10:46 of the 2nd Minnesota found a wide open backside and Scott Kozlak chipped it past Ryan Zapolski for a 2-0 lead. Pittsburgh went on to the power play at 7:29 which was nullified after a scrum in front of the Minnesota net. Minnesota took advantage of a 4 on 4 situation as sniper Josh Brodeen finished off a super cross ice pass over the shoulder of Zapolski to make it 3-0 with a little over six minutes left in the seconds period. Pittsburgh was overmatched physically and started to show more undisciplined taking another penalty. With 1:01 left, Minnesota’s Ryan Guentzel made a beautiful tip of a shot from the left point off the stick Pat Fogerty for another power play goal and a 4-0 lead.

The third period would be a test of character for Team Pittsburgh. For the first time in this tournament they were overmatched physically and had a big hole to climb being down 4-0. An opportunity on the power play at 16:10 for Pittsburgh, which they didn’t score on but at 13:13, Bill Repass stole the puck and was in on a breakaway and converted to make it 4-1. Then at 11:39 another bad penalty killing an momentum for Pittsburgh and another opportunity for the lethal Minnesota power play and with 10:56 the dagger came as Mitch Ryan tipped a perfect feed past Zapolski. Just 32 seconds later at 10:24 Cory Johnson converted an odd man break as Shea Walters threaded a perfect pass to make it 6-1. With 7:10 left Cory Johnson served the toast for breakfast and an exclamation point for another trip to the finals for Team Minnesota turning the Pittsburgh defense inside out and lofting a dart over the glove side of Ryan Zapolski for a 7-1 lead and went on to victory and a spot in the finals.

For Team Pittsburgh a great tournament and a measuring stick of where we stand nationally. We are not at Minnesota’s level, but we learned that we can compete with and beat some of the premiere programs chasing Minnesota in the United States. What it will take is to bring our best AAA midget players here to Bensenville, which is no knock on the 20 who suited up, but 7-1 doesn’t cut it at this level. It was a great effort by mostly a group of high school and midget players, who started a ride of the unknown Wednesday and then where like many other teams in this event sent back to school by the masters, who exploited the lack of discipline of Team Pittsburgh by playing hockey the way its supposed to be played Minnesota style.

Team Pittsburgh vs Team Wisconsin

Team Pittsburgh opened up the 2005 Chicago Showcase with a heartstopping 5-4 loss to North Dakota. Mario Panucci [Montour], Mark Polidor [West Allegheny], Ryne Savisky [West Allegheny] and Dan Sidle [Penn Trafford] scored as Team Pittsburgh rallied for three goals in the 3rd period but could not score the equalizer controlling the play, but in hockey you must play three periods. As they headed in to the second game with a highly touted Wisconsin club, one had to wonder if Team Pittsburgh would win a game and possibly fall out of the coveted A Bracket, where they have competed since 1997.

Team Pittsburgh has competed in the Chicago Showcase for every year since 1984 and the past 18 years under the guidance of Dave Klasnick, who serves as General Manager for the team and provides a great experience for the players who are fortunate to make the team after the rigorous four day tryout and two weeks of practices. Head Coach Ed Figas of Serra Catholic along with assistant Kevin Zielmanski of Central Catholic, were joined by Dave Fryer of Canon McMillan for a big test for the team. So the homage to Bensenville, where I joined the Montour boys and an intimate gathering of folks who made the trip to Chicago, which was my first since 1998 after 3 years.

In the opening minutes of the game, Wisconsin put Team Pittsburgh on their heels with good pressure, but where limited in their chances. Team Pittsburgh stuck first as Billy Repass [Elizabeth Forward] made a tremendous play to intercept a pass and throw it to the net and across the goal line, but the referee was out of position and waived the goal off. Then at 10:31 of the first on the power play, Kyle Sidle [Penn Trafford] dug the puck out of the corner and fed it to the slot where Mario Panucci was stationed and fired a bullet high over the glove side of Wisconsin goaltender Jeff Henderson for a 1-0 lead. Team Pittsburgh used it’s speed and played tenaciously against a much bigger and supposedly more physical opponent and countered hit for hit. Then a heads up play by Shane Ferguson [Mt Lebanon] at 5:27 led to the next goal as Fergy caught Henderson off balance and fired a snapshot on the ice to the far corner and Pittsburgh now had a 2-0 lead. Pittsburgh continued playing pretty smart defense but got a little sloppy late in the 1st period as Wisconsin’s Shay Tainter incepted a pass and beat Drew Stanton [Canon McMillan] on the short side.

Back and forth the teams went in the 2nd period and both goaltenders shined as Pittsburgh held a shot advantage of 13-8. Wisconsin had their chances, but Drew Stanton stood tall and Wisconsin showed undisciplined play nullifying several power play chances and essentially killed their momentum or any momentum as Pittsburgh took a slim 2-1 advantage to the third.

Wisconsin nearly tied the game at 10:07 of the third period as Brett Olson was robbed by Drew Stanton from point blank range. Team Pittsburgh had a couple of power plays midway through the third period and was looking for the knockout punch and they did it as Kyle Sidle [Penn Trafford] slammed home a rebound after a great setup by Josh Jones [Serra Catholic] and Paul Dittrich [North Allegheny] for a 3-1 lead with 6:15 left. Drew Stanton closed the door on Wisconsin stopping 26 of 27 shots including a statement save on towering Sean Wiles with 2:25 remaining for a hug 3-1 win for Team Pittsburgh and secure a spot in the playoff round, which begins Saturday.

Team Pittsburgh vs Team Northern New England

After defeating Wisconsin on Thursday evening, Team Pittsburgh all but secured a berth in Saturday’s Quarter-Final round. A win over Northern New England could propel Team Pittsburgh into a preferable matchup in next step. In 1999, Team Pittsburgh danced to the finals before falling in the Championship to Minnesota and in 2001 a semi-final appearance falling to Minnesota once again. Both of those teams were laiden with players, who have since moved on to the Division 1 level from AAA midget and Junior A. This team is a little different not because of the talent, but more emphasis on this group is the team chemistry, character and unselfishness of a group of 20 players not expected to do anything in a tough A Bracket

At 7:55 of the opening period, Ryan Zaploski [Cathedral Prep] made a great leg save from right in front and moments later Pittsburgh went on the power play, but could not capitalize, but built momentum and started to get scoring chances. Goaltenders Raymond Quattrucci of Northern New England and Ryan Zapolski faced 16 and 12 shots respectively in a scoreless opening period.

In the second period, when it looked like Team Pittsburgh was in trouble Ryan Zapolski kept NNE out and then the speed kicked in as Kyle Sidle [Penn Trafford] set up Raymond Gillies [Serra Catholic], who buried a snapshot past Quattrucci for a 1-0 lead at 11:06 of the 2nd. At 7:26 of the 2nd New England went on the power play and then at 6:49 Ryan Zapolski made another great save sliding across to stop a chance on the back side. In a very entertaining two periods of hockey, Team Pittsburgh took a 1-0 lead to the locker room.

On to the third we went and in the opening minute Team Pittsburgh did a lot of running around and failed to clear the zone and through that struggle did not give up a goal, but committed a penalty at 12:48 giving NE an opportunity on the power play and this time they converted as Dan Rautenburg snapped a rebound over a fallen Zapolski to tie the game at one apiece. At 11:04, Team Pittsburgh went on the power play, which became a 5 on 3 at 9:57 with a golden opportunity to take the lead. At 9:25, Mark Polidor was absolutely robbed by Quattracci, who sprawled got a glove on it at the last moment. Pittsburgh went back on the power play with 5:56 left and Quatracci made another big save on Polidor with a little over 4 minutes remaining in regulation. At 2:36, Tyler Martin got stone by Zapolski with the glove. With 1:48 left, Pittsburgh went on the power play and at the buzzer Mark Polidor’s slap shot rang of the post and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Team Philadelphia vs Team Ohio

Team Philadelphia entered this morning’s contest against Team Ohio with a 1-2-0 record in the 2005 Chicago Showcase under Germantown Academy coach Gump Whiteside. The amazing fact if you look at the Team Philadelphia lineup is the absence of the best players from Malvern Prep [Nick Averona did participate], Germantown Academy [Jack Morrison was injured], Archbishop Carroll, Archbishop Wood and even Pennsylvania Class A State Champions Penncrest are nowhere to be found. The Chicago Showcase is to represent ‘the best players’ in each area and it doesn’t. In fact, of the Pa Hockey top 25 in Eastern Pa, Philly has a half dozen to a dozen players, which may answer why it is stuck in the C bracket of the Chicago Showcase.

They don’t have to look far as the next bench over to Team Ohio, which seems to have the same dilemma as their lineup does not include any participants from perennial State Champs St Edwards and Ohio powers Bowling Green, St Ignatius among others.
These are states who have been playing interscholastic hockey for well over 30 years and should be competitive with the rest of the country and they are competing in brackets with Florida, Team South [Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia & Mississippi] and Team Southwest [Arizona, New Mexico, Texas & Oklahoma]. The cost may be one issue which can be addressed [currently $ 500 – 700 per player] and possibly a little more publicity through Webcasting the event for Team Pittsburgh and Team Philadelphia, which will be put on the table for next season’s event, with the proceeds from sponsorship over and above the costs going to fund both teams and giving people across the country an opportunity to tune in to a great event.

Team Ohio struck first at 13:32 as Andrew Lachiewicz [Troy HS] took a pass from Jake Coyle [Padua] and beat Alex Adoni [Plymouth Whitemarsh] to give Ohio a 1-0 lead. At 5:22 of the first, LaSalle’s John Williams got loose shorthanded and buried a wrist shot upstairs past Craig Butler [Kent Roosevelt] to tie the score at 1-1. Ian DeLong [Kutztown] made a great play at 1:43 left in the opening period with a backhand upstairs to give Philly a 2-1 lead.

At 3:52 of the 2nd, Team Ohio’s Jake Coyle tied the game on a deflection of a pass from the sideboards. Less than a minute later, Team Ohio regained the lead as Mike Kasmer crashed the net and beat Adoni to make it 3-2.

With 15:22 left in the third period, LaSalle’s L.G. Gattison had a chance on a breakaway but was stopped by Butler. Then with 13:53 left in the final period, Ohio’s Mike Kasmer [Trinity] scored on a wrist shot from the top of the circle to give Ohio a 4-2 advantage. With 25 seconds left Ohio put the game on ice as David Goldsmith [Shaker Heights] scored on a wide open chance on a nice setup by Charlie Fox [St Francis DeSales], which was almost a gimme to make the final 5-2 in favor of Team Ohio.

Pittsburgh snatches victory from the jaws of defeat over defending champ California !

Quarter-Finals
Pittsburgh vs California

It is a long time from Wednesday morning when Team Pittsburgh began their voyage of the unknown in the 2005 Chicago Showcase. A narrow 5-4 loss to semi-finalist North Dakota in a game where the team will admit that they didn’t play three periods of hockey, but a superb third period almost yielded a tie game. The complete game victory of another semi-finalist Wisconsin 3-1, which was easily one of the biggest upsets of the tournament. A thrilling 1-1 tie in the final game of the preliminary round featuring a goaltending dual between Northern New England’s Raymond Quattrucci and Team Pittsburgh’s Ryan Zapolski [who was the winner of the Peggy Fikis award for the outstanding goaltender of the 2005 Chicago Showcase, joining Brent Klimow of Erie McDowell in 2001 and Martin Wilde of Forest Hills H.S. in 1995 as Team Pittsburgh’s recipients of Chicago Showcase award winners].

So now Team Pittsburgh sets up to face a Team Cailfornia team, who are the defending champions of the Chicago Showcase, for the privilege to meet Team Minnesota, who has dominated the Chicago Showcase tournament since its inception in 1984. California, like Team Pittsburgh, has enjoyed a tempermental Showcase with a 3-2 loss to Minnesota in a tight contest, defeated Michigan 4-2 and then lost to Illinois 4-3 to complete the round robin at 1-2-0. California is a very good team with a core group of players from a strong AAA midget program out of Los Angeles.

The decision to start the line of Billy Repass, Alan Halapin and Lee Heilman paid off as they penned up California in the opening minute. Then it was Mark Polidor, who made a great individual effort and slipped a backhand past Bryan Roden at 15:52 to give Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead. Then a great breakout pass by Kyle Sidle to brother Dan Sidle netted a wrist shot which fooled goaltender Roden low on the stick side at 13:26 for a 2-0 Pittsburgh lead. At 11:29, Mario Panucci almost made it 3-0, but goaltender Roden made a great stop sliding to the opposite post. At 10:45, California went on the power play with a chance to cut into the early lead and Pittsburgh killed it impressively. California struck at 5:23 of the first as Alan Aiken buried a wrist shot on the short side past Drew Stanton to make it 2-1. With 1:35 left in the opening period, Team Pittsburgh committed another penalty as a result of running around and another killing the penalty with 48 seconds left giving California a golden opportunity to tie the game. And with 24 seconds left the LA Kings Midget AAA line struck fast as Richard Leitner took a back door pass from Ramin Taheri and deposited it past Drew Stanton to erase a 2-0 lead of Pittsburgh.

On to the second we went and Pittsburgh still had to kill a minute on the 2nd power play and the didn’t as the forward Richard Lietner sped through the middle of the ice and blistered a wrist whot low to the stick side for a 3-2 California lead and another power play goal. Pittsburgh went on the power play at 15:42, but could not capitalize. At 12:19, Pittsburgh got caught pinching and Drew Stanton made a great stop on Lietner. At 8:36, California went on another power play and Pittsburgh killed it off. Great effort by Ryne Savisky drew a penalty on California at 6:07, giving Pittsburgh a chance on the power play to no avail and another power play with 2:37 left and a 5 on 3 with 1:27 left and another 5 on 3 with 1:10 to work with 36 seconds left, which was nullified by an undisciplined penalty by Pittsburgh with 2 seconds left.

At 16:17 of the 3rd Period, Drew Stanton made a great save on Cal’s John Stoddard sprawling out and keeping the puck out and the game 3-2. Bryan Roden returned the favor on Mario Panucci at 14:50 from point blank range. Then the arena was silenced as Anton Volkov, via the Ukraine ***ula of California, who blistered a wrist shot high over the shoulder of Drew Stanton on the short side at 12:50 to give California a huge insurance tally and a 4-2 lead. Pittsburgh went on the power play with 10:50 left and a chance to get back in the game and then again at 8:05, but was nullified by another undisciplined penalty by Pittsburgh. Another power play # 5 at 6:51 and not a chance. Steven Adams scored on his first opportunity on the power play with a wrist shot high over the glove side to cut the lead to 4-3. Another power play # 6 with 4:50 left and the chance again to tie it and no goal. With 2:13 left, another power play # 7 and only one goal to show for it. The chances and time were running out on Team Pittsburgh and then a miracle goal with 1:27 left as Mark Polidor threw the puck to the front of the net and it bounded past the California goaltender to tie it at 4 apiece. Then with 24 seconds left, Dan Sidle threw it to the net and Mike Penkrot rammed it home to give Pittsburgh a miracle 5-4 lead. And they held on to win and play another day against Team Minnesota in the semi-finals of the 2005 Chicago Showcase with a heartstopping 5-4 win.

Philadelphia falls short to Wisconsin

Wisconsin White 4 Philadelphia 2

2007 Chicago Showcase
BENSENVILLE, ILLINOIS -

Team Philadelphia entered the 2007 Chicago Showcase with aspirations of winning the Kevin Kodalen C Bracket and advancing to the round of 8 this year. Unfortunately for Germantown Academy Head Coach Gump Whiteside and General Manager Kenny Haas, President of the Suburban High School Hockey League, the area of the Delaware Valley with 141 High School Hockey teams is unable to attract the best players from the Philadelphia area from schools such as Malvern Prep, LaSalle, Holy Ghost Prep, Haverford High and the other premiere programs to participate and even try out for this team. The reasons for which I don’t quite understand, the best players tend to listen to travel coaches, who apparently discourage the participation, which is typical and I know its not from lack of effort to market the program, which is done over all of the 7 League Websites that make up the Flyers Cup program.

So with all of that said, Philadelphia needed a victory over Wisconsin White, the 2nd Wisconsin team in the Chicago Showcase, which is a team brought together with players from almost 500 miles of area and really amazing to see kids from Milwaukee to Superior to Madison and all over as a unit of 20. The other remarkable thing is that in all of that area, they do not have nearly the number of High School teams as Philadelphia.
As a person who represents Pa Hockey, I am willing to help promote the process of getting the best players here to Chicago on a national stage and challenge the best players in Philadelphia to come experience a great event for themselves. When I first got involved in Team Pittsburgh in 1996, our team was in the C Bracket and after 1997 began the climb the A Brackets, where we have been since 1999 and have not left since.

Philadelphia’s plight looked good in the opening period as Wisshickon’s Jayson Ritchey scored to give them a 1-0 lead at 13:04. Wisconsin tied the game on a goal by Vince Hagman at 6:50.

The second period saw Philly take the lead again as Justin Krute of the Hill School scored on an assist from Eric DeFelice of Central Bucks West at 6:53 to give the Orange and Black a 2-1 lead. Philadelphia missed a golden opportunity to take a two-goal advantage on a breakaway. Wisconsin White rallied scoring a power play goal by Brody Zebro at 3:43 and then took the lead on a shorthanded goal by Casey Lutz with just :09 left in the period to take a 3-2 lead.

The third period was penalty filled and Philadelphia was killing off the majority of them. A late power play gave them a chance to tie the score, but was unsuccessful dashing the hopes of Team Philadelphia advancing to the Quarter-Final round as Wisconsin’s Brody Zebro scored an empty netter with 18 seconds remaining and gave Wisconsin a 4-2 victory outshooting Philly 31-25 in the opener of play on Friday at the 2007 Chicago Showcase.
