Peters uses depth to hand Latrobe first loss in two seasons
PA HOCKEY GAME OF THE WEEK
GREENSBURG -
Latrobe Hockey has not lost a hockey game since February of 2008 to Greensburg CC.
The two time defending Pennsylvania State Champions return several key players and in addition has tremendous development in the Junior Varsity and Freshman programs, which has caused the Wildcats to have to cut players for the first time in recent memory.
Head Coach Dan Ridder knows that his team is a work in progress for 2009-2010 and the goal is to return to the Pennsylvania State Championship for an opportunity for a three peat in March.
Peters Twp knows all about three peats as the Indians had an opportunity in 2004 at Neville Island only to fall to Archbishop Carroll in a shocking State Championship contest. The Indians returned the very next year to knock off Haverford and capture their 3rd State Title in four years. Head Coach Rick Tingle, who actually called the broadcast of the 2003 State Championship when arguably one of the greatest High School Teams of all-time throttled Holy Ghost Prep at IceLine as Peters established itself as one of the premier hockey programs in State History with that run.
Latrobe got this party started in the opening period as Charlie Harris pounced ona Jayson Angus rebound at 8:04 to give the Cats a 1-0 lead. Ben Dachille tied the game for Peters less than a minute later as his shot through traffic found its way behind the Latrobe goaltender at 7:35 to knot the score at 1-1. Peters took the lead at 4:12 as Cody Gubala slipped a rebound through the 5-hole to make it 2-1 with 4:12 to go in period number one.
Peters got into penalty trouble late in the first period and Jayson Angus made them pay as high shot from the high slot on a 5 on 3 power play beat Woody Shell to tie the score at two apiece. The turning point of the hockey game came on another Latrobe power play as Drew Rubeo stole the puck from the Latrobe defenseman and scored with 6:35 to go in the middle period to make it 3-2.
Latrobe could not take advantage of yet another man advantage and Matt White extended the Peters lead with a pretty breakaway goal through the 5-hole to make it 4-2 in favor of the Indians with 6:02 to go. Latrobe poured on the shots in the 3rd period outshooting Peters 15-11 and 38-31 on the evening, but could not solve Woody Shell, who played an excellent game between the pipes. The Wildcats never quit and Noah Batis scored at the buzzer to make the final score Peters 4 Latrobe 3 and while Peters Twp defeated the Wildcats, Latrobe showed it is not going to hand over their title without a scrap and would certainly be an interesting match up in March.

Game Summary provided by Peters Twp Hockey
10/26/2009 - Indians open the 2009/2010 season with win over Elizabeth Forward
In a battle of politically incorrect nicknames, the Indians of Peters Township downed the Warriors of Elizabeth Forward by a 6-1 score in their home opener at the Iceoplex at Southpointe tonight. The Indians came out with a vengeance in the 1st period, outshooting the Warriors by a 20-2 margin and jumping to a 3 goal lead. Senior Cody Gubala got the Indians on the scoreboard at the 7:45 mark of the 1st period when he took a pass from fellow Senior Kevin Hough and snapped a low shot past the EF netminder, Michael Amelio also assisted on the play. Cody Gubala struck again at the 2:47 mark, banging home a rebound of a Kevin Hough shot for a 2-0 lead. Junior Matt Lison closed out the scoring in the 1st period for the Indians when he converted a pretty passing play with Senior Matt White with 31 seconds remaining on the clock. Senior Jake Boss also picked up an assist on Lison's goal.
The Indians took their foot off the gas a bit in the 2nd period and the result was relatively evenly played period as evidenced by the shots on goal (10 to 8 in favor of Peters). Matt White scored the Indians only goal of the period, ripping a one-timer off a beautiful feed from Jake Boss to give the Indians a 4-0 lead after 2 periods.
The Indians came out after the ice cut with a renewed urgency and dominated the 3rd period, outshooting the Warriors by a 12-3 margin. After EF got on the board to make the score 4-1, White put the game away with an outstanding individual effort, scoring an empty net goal while killing a 6 on 3 disadvantage for the Indians. Lison closed out the scoring at the 0:48 mark of the final period with assists from Seniors Drew Rubeo and Paul Henney.
Senior netminder Tyler Borne picked up the victory for the Indians, stopping 12 of 13 shots.
Peters takes on 2 time defending Penguin and PA State Champion Latrobe on Thursday 10/29/2009 at the Kirk Nevin arena in Greensburg.

2009 Pennsylvania High School Hockey Championships

Bayard Rustin 5 Mars 0
WEST CHESTER -
Class A – Hat Trick for West Chester
Bayard Rustin (23-2-0) entered the 20th Anniversary of the Pennsylvania Class A Championship as Flyers Cup Champions for the first time, on the heels of its brother schools Henderson in 2007 and East in 2008 capturing the previous Pa Cup crowns and ranked # 1 in the Pa Hockey Statewide Rankings. The most revealing factor that does not show up in the stat column is the overwhelming support for Head Coach Nick Russo’s Knights as over 1000 jammed into the IceLine Rink in West Chester, Pa. And 85 – 90 % where in the Blue and Gold of Bayard Rustin.
Mars (23-1-0) winners of the Penguins Cup earlier this week has not played in a hostile environment and certainly did not play the caliber of competition that the Knights do in the Inter-County League, but nonetheless the Planets came out hitting in the opening minutes and outshot BY 12-7, but could not beat goaltender Philipp Allmaier. Rustin went on the power play at 10:13 of the opening period and imposing defenseman Eric Knodel gained the blue line of the Mars zone and fired a lasar to the stick side of Tyler Stepke to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.
Mars got a little sloppy early in the 2nd period and Patrick Kinch made a superb play to keep the puck in the zone get it to Knodel, who threw the puck to the net and Matt Capone outworked the Mars defense for the puck and found the net to give Rustin a 2-0 advantage at 14:28. The Planets were reeling and Tyler Stepke made several nice saves to keep the score 2-0. Mars then took a couple of penalties that would spell doom for their State Championship hopes as William Gaffney took down the right side and wheeled behind the net and completely fooled everyone in the building except the forgotten player on the play and the previews as Mike Ignatuk took the backdoor pass and tapped it in for a huge goal and Rustin was on their way with 7:11 to go and over half the game to play. The Planets slim hopes now were getting worse as the Knights outshot them 16-8 in the middle period and then capped off a great period of hockey as William Gaffney took advantage of a bad clearing attempt and deposited it on the backhand past Stepke to make it 4-0 with 1:06 to go in the period.
Bayard Rustin held off a Mars potential rally in the 3rd period by playing smart hockey and limiting time and space and even though the Planets outshot BY in the 3rd period 8-5, Phillipp Allmaier would turn away all 28 shots to earn a State Championship shutout. Brian Christie would put an exclamation point on Bayard Rustin’s first State Championship victory on a great individual effort beating Stepke on the backhand to make it a 5-0 final and the hat trick for West Chester schools as Rutin joined East and Henderson as Pennsylvania Class A State Champions.
2009 Pennsylvania High School Hockey Championships
West Chester, Pennsylvania
Latrobe 3 Council Rock South 2
WEST CHESTER
Class AA – Rally for perfection for Latrobe
Latrobe (25-0-0) has been on a quest since the 2008-2009 season began and become the 2nd Pennsylvania School in Class AA [first was Thomas Jefferson in 1999] and 13th team in State History [Conestoga AAA (1986), Upper St Clair AAA (1987), Meadville AAA (1992,1993,1994,1995,1996), Bishop McCort A (1996), Bethel Park (2002), Mt Lebanon (2006) LaSalle (2008) to complete a perfect season in Interscholastic Hockey in the State of Pennsylvania. Council Rock South (19-5-1), the Flyers Cup would be the team in the Wildcats way of history and beat Suburban League rival North Penn to win their first ever Flyers Cup.
Latrobe was the aggressor in the opening period outshooting CR South 13 –4 in the opening period but Hawks goaltender Sean Boyd was superb stopping the all. Council Rock got a break as the puck bounced past the Latrobe defesneman at the point and Peter Malamud raced up the ice and fired a wrist shot past Nick Loyacona to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead at 3:34 and a short handed goal.
The Wildcats tied the score at 9:30 of the second as Matthew Batis found a loose puck and beat Boyd on the short side to make the count 1-1. CR South had the better of the play in the second period outshooting them 11-6 and earned the lead as Patrick Grilli would not be denied after Loyacona made several great stops and scored on the rebound with 7:09 to play for a power play goal.
Latrobe came out flying in the 3rd period and put CR South on their heels, but Sean Boyd was making the lead stand up. The Hawks took a penalty behind the play and Latrobe’s chances were running out. Dillon Hunter pinched from his point position found the puck and fired a blazing snapshot that just trickled past Boyd for a power play goal with 4:58 to play after some pretty nice passing by the Latrobe power play. Hawks called timeout to settle down their team, but it backfired as Latrobe kept coming and with time running down in regulation, Tyler Berger gathered the puck in the neutral zone and sped down the left side of the ice got a step on the CR South defenseman and slipped a backhand through the 5 hole of Sean Boyd sending the throng of Latrobe faithful into a frenzy. The Wildcats held off Council Rock South the rest of the way and as they did a year ago by the identical score of 3-2, the Latrobe Wildcats became the 5th Class AA team to win back to back Pennsylvania State Championships.
2009 Pennsylvania High School Hockey Championships
West Chester, Pennsylvania
LaSalle 6 Shaler 4
Class AAA – LaSalle journey’s pay off as they edge feisty Shaler
LaSalle (25-9-5) did not have the season it did a year ago and for Head Coach Wally Muehlbronner the goal was simple, win the last game of the season and LaSalle would be champions of the State of Pennsylvania for the 3rd time in their history and second in a row. Shaler (23-2-0) would be an unknown opponent for LaSalle, but a team that has grown with each victory this season and gained quite a bit of momentum in the playoffs and winning their first ever Penguins Cup in 38 years was maybe the beginning for the Titans as Curt Hetz has built a group of mostly underclassmen into a winner in his first year and the former two-time 50 goal scorer for the Titans believed his team may have some surprises for the Explorers.
LaSalle didn’t waste any time getting things rolling as Flyers Cup hero Dan Merenich scored on a rebound just 58 seconds into the Pennsylvania Class AAA title. Shaler had some jitters but started to build on a penalty kill early in the period. The Titans went on the power play as Gabe Antoni stopped Shane Shiring at 4:02, which grew to a 5 on 3 for 20 seconds. Shaler capitalized as Brian Stein jammed home a Tyler Schreiber rebound to knot the game at one apiece and more importantly established that it could play on equal footing with the Explorers. Shaler committed a costly turnover and Ross Denczi made them pay with 3:13 to play giving LaSalle a 2-1 lead. The Titans fought back and tied the score as Drew Martz converted a quick pass to the front of the net by Patrick Schafer with just 15 seconds to play and the score was tied at 2-2 after one period.
In a wide open second period the teams exchanged shots throughout the period. Shaler’s Drew Martz knocked home a loose puck with 8:44 to go in the period to give the Titans their first lead 3-2. The Explorers now had their work cut out for them and turned their game up a notch late in the 2nd period. Ross Denczi got things started as he wlaked out of the corner and whipped a backhand past Steven Weilersbacher to tie the score 3-3. Less than a minute later was a huge turning point of this State Championship as Matt Catanese kept the puck in at the right point threw a shot which deflected up in the air and Steven Weilersbacher never saw as came down like a rainbow out of the sky over the Shaler goaltender’s glove and into the net as LaSalle regain the lead 4-3. The Titans were on their heels at this point and on a delayed penalty call Mark Schnupp found a loose puck after his teammate was pulled down and stayed with it beating incoming Shaler goaltender Oscar Prom on the stick side to make it 5-3 with 2:31 to go. The Titans did not quit and had to kill off a penalty late in the period, when Shane Shiring undressed a LaSalle defenseman and fired a low shot on Gabe Antoni, which squirted free and Drew Martz charged the net and buried upstairs at 1:09 to pull Shaler to within one 5-4 at the end of two periods.
The next goal in this hockey game would be paramount as LaSalle found itself in a good old fashioned dogfight with Shaler. The Titans came out in the third period and outshot them 15-6 and the Explorers were holding on at this point as Gabe Antoni made a nice save on Patrick Dobson at 10:34 and similar to Shaler’s Penguins Cup game winner LaSalle was able to work the puck into the Shaler zone just 17 seconds later and Ross Denczi found an opening and Nick Cruice set him up for the biggest goal of LaSalle’s season to give the Explorers some breathing room at 6-4. Shaler kept working and forcing the play in LaSalle’s end and on the power play nearly scored but Sean McCue was robbed on a spectacular save by Antoni at 7:26 and the Titans kept the puck alive but Antoni made another great stop on Zac Lynch with 7:09 to play. The Explorers could smell victory but Shaler did not go quietly as the Titans played toe to toe with them outshooting LaSalle 42-37 for the game. LaSalle was able to hold on and became the 5th Class AAA team to repeat as Class AAA State Champions joining Churchill, Conestoga, Meadville and Bethel Park to repeat as Pennsylvania Class AAA State Champions.

2009 Penguins Cup AAA Championship
2009 Penguins Cup AAA Championship
Shaler 3 Seneca Valley 2 (2 OT)
Shaler Hockey has been in existence since 1971 and no Shaler team has ventured to the Penguins Cup in their 38 year history and for Seneca Valley, a relatively newer program, the same could be said, so this game would be a match up of two programs looking to claim their first big prize. The Titans had the better of the play early on as they outshot the Raiders 7-1 until Shaler struck at 8:36 of the opening period when Patrick Schafer one timed a Drew Martz cross ice pass through the 5-hole to give the Titans a 1-0 lead. That lead would be extended early in the second period as Schafer found the net again after Seneca failed to clear the zone beating Ryan Schutte on a wrist shot high over the glove hand side at 11:43 of the 2nd to make it 2-0. Seneca would have a 5 on 3 that they did not score on but provided a momentum shift in the game which led to a Raider goal with 1:49 to play in the period as Tyler Mesisca poked home a rebound to pull Seneca to within one at 2-1. Shaler was still carrying the play in the 3rd period but could not put the Raiders away and it cost them when with 5:33 to play Tayler Wagner kept the puck in the zone and then moments later fired a low wrist shot from the right point through the 5-hole of Shaler goaltender Oscar Prom to tie the score. The teams battled into the and through the first overtime period as both teams had decent chances but could not score. Early in the 2nd overtime, Billy Dobson just missed only six seconds in, then Logan Pfeffer would have the game on his stick just missing on the backhand of a wide open net at 8:49 and the very next trip up the ice resulted in a shot that will be remembered in Shaler Hockey for a long time as Shane Shiring unleashed a wicked low slap shot which trickled past Ryan Schutte, sending the Shaler fans into a frenzy and giving the Titans their first Penguins Cup title in school history.

2009 Penguins Cup A Championship
Mars 3 Bishop McCort 2
PITTSBURGH –
A lot has been written and a lot said about Mars throughout the season, but the simple fact is that this team has been the number one team in Class A for most of the season and since their Penguins Cup loss a year ago looking to atone for what happened at Mellon Arena losing to Quaker Valley and this game would be an opportunity for the Planets to claim their first ever Penguins Cup and move on to Saturday’s State Championship game against 2009 Flyers Cup champions Bayard Rustin. In their path would be a Bishop McCort team and program with a long tradition of Penguins Cup excellence including five Pennsylvania State Class A Championships. Mars would strike first in this game in the 1st period on the power play as Michael Mazzota unleashed a long slap shot from the center point that beat McCort goaltender Jimmy Stenger on a the stick side at 10:33. McCort woul tie the contest at 8:18 of the 2nd period on a bang bang play as Matt Hotlz drilled home a Dane Domonkos rebound to tie the score at one apiece. Brady Sipe would give the Planets the lead with 9:11 to go in regulation as he fired a wrist shot upstairs past Stenger to make it 2-1 in favor of Mars. A little insurance came Mars way on terrific passing play as Andrew Santa finished off a passing play between Derek Sitterly and Matt Wingert with 4:24 to go to make it 3-1 Planets. Dane Domonkos pulled the Crimson Crushers back to within one with 2:56 to play on a power play goal on a rebound of a Kurtis Straw shot from the left point and McCort still had a chance. Mars goaltender Taylor Stepke stopped 28 of 29 shots in the game and several over the last few minutes to give the Mars Planets their first ever Penguins Cup championship.

2009 Penguins Cup AA Championship
2009 Penguins Cup AA Championship
Latrobe 3 Montour 0
PITTSBURGH –
The prelude to this game was about Montour Goaltender Matt Skoff, who deserves a ton of accolades for getting the Spartans to their first ever Penguins Cup. With Skoff has been very good, Latrobe Goaltender Nick Loyacona was a big reason why the Wildcats won a State Championship a year ago and the Senior keeper made some very big stops with the game on the line against rivals Franklin Regional. Montour had an early shot advantage in the opening period 7-4, but Latrobe would get their first power play opportunity at 7:45 of the 1st. Matt Batis made a terrific play lugging the puck the length of the ice into the Montour zone and a very good drop pass to a streaking Jayson Angus down the right side, who found Ryan LaDuke on the bottom of the circle, who beat Skoff on the stick side to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Early in the second period, Latrobe found the net again as Tyler Berger walked out of the corner and beat Skoff low to the glove side with 14:44 remaining in the period to make it 2-0. Nick Loyacona took this game over stoning the Spartan attack stopping 30 of 30 shots through two periods including several strong scoring opportunities in the 2nd period. Latrobe continued to roll four lines and wear down Montour in the 3rd period, but could not beat Skoff, who made 20 saves after the game was 2-0 to keep his club in the game. Latrobe sealed the victory when Jayson Angus scored into an empty net from 120 feet with 16 seconds left to give the Wildcats their second straight Penguins Cup and a trip to IceLine to play 2009 Flyers Cup champions the Council Rock South Eagles.

2009 Penguins Cup Semi-Finals
2009 Penguins Cup Semi-Finals
PITTSBURGH -
Class A – Bishop McCort 9 Serra Catholic 3
In a see-saw affair over the opening two periods, Bishop McCort (17-4-2) broke open a 4-3 contest with five goals in the 3rd period to smash Serra Catholic (20-3-0). After Zack Bartos opened the scoring for McCort in the 1st, in a six goal second period the Crushers and Eagles were 4-3 in favor of McCort at the end of two periods. Nick Pappas, Kurtis Straw and Dane Domonkos scored for Bishop McCort and Jay Leppo, Erik Manetta and Corey Beam scored for the Eagles. Todd Thomas of Bishop McCort broke the game wide open with two goals 1:47 apart early in the third period and Domonkos added his second and Zack Bartos completed the hat trick with two goals late in the final stanza. The Crimson Crushers outshot Serra 29-20.
Class AA – Montour 2 Canevin 1
Goaltending is sometimes a great equalizer in the playoffs and Montour (17-7-1) has a great one in Matt Skoff, who turned aside 34 of 35 shots against Canevin (15-7-2). The Crusaders threw 15 shots at the Montour goaltender in the 3rd period and rung a couple off the post and crossbar to no avail. After a scoreless first period, freshman Domennic Martinelli scored on the backhand at 11:39 of the second period. Zach Milnarcik extended the lead to 2-1 on a nifty backhand through the 5 hole of Julian DeFilippo to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead at 9:46. Canevin finally scored with 7:11 to go in the second as Vince Nicolella found a loose puck and shoved it past Skoff to make it 2-1. The Crusaders pressed in the 3rd period and could not beat Skoff and Andy Beck scored into an empty net from 120 feet with 35 seconds to go giving the Montour Spartans their first ever trip to the Penguins Cup finals. Canevin outshot Montour 35-14.
Class AAA – Seneca Valley 4 Upper St Clair 3 (OT)
Upper St Clair (16-5-4) came out smoking in the opening minutes and seized the lead as Zach Feldman went five hole past Ryan Schutte at 13:22 of the opening period. Seneca rallied to take the lead as Sean Sokolowski scored at 6:22 and then Kaleb Schwab scored on the power play with 5:10 to go in the first period. The Panthers had a strong second period thanks to good pressure and several power play opportunities as Theo Schneiders scored on a backhand at 7:41 and then Justin Selep lifted a rebound over Schutte with 1:40 to play in the 2nd and the Panthers took a 3-2 lead to the third period. Seneca Valley outshot USC in the 3rd period 13-8 and 45-27 on the evening and finally solved Matt Wreggett as Erik Larson blocked a USC clearing attempt and slid the puck past the USC goalie to tie the score with 7:31 to go in regulation. This contest headed to overtime and would be decided on a broken 3 on 2 as Logan Pfeffer and Brandon Platt got the puck to the net where Mike Rohm found a loose puck and fired it past Wreggett with 2:41 to go in overtime to give the Raiders their first ever trip to the Penguins Cup final 4-3.

2009 Penguins Cup Semi-Finals
PITTSBURGH -
Class A – Mars 4 Quaker Valley 0
Mars (23-1-0) completely dominated this contest from start to finish defeating Quaker Valley (15-7-1) 4-0. Jake Robasch opened the scoring at 10:06 of the 2nd period following his own rebound off the post and beating Zach Taylor to give the Planets a 1-0 lead. Tyler Whiteford scored from in close on the power play with 5:02 remaining in the 2nd period to make it 2-0. Derek Sitterly and Steven Tracy added goals in the final period as Mars outshot the Quakers 40-7 as Tyler Stepke earned a shutout.
Class AA – Latrobe 5 Franklin Regional 3
Latrobe (23-0-0) was ripe for the taking in this contest as Franklin scored first on a Pete Ellis goal at 8:43 of the opening period to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. Latrobe got a huge goal late in the period as Tyler Berger got a rebound on the backhand to knot the score at one apiece. Latrobe took advantage of sloppy FR play in the 2nd and mounted a big attack outshooting the Panthers 17-5 and scoring three goals to take a 3-1 lead. Cody Ray tapped in a Chris Karnes pass at 12:44 after a bad clearing attempt, Tyler Baloh tapped in a Cody Ray rebound after James Orr juggled the puck and the backbreaker was JeffJoe Regula’s terrific effort to find a loose puck amongst two Panthers and slam in home with just ten seconds remaining in the period. Matt Batis converted a Regula pass to make it 5-1 early in the 3rd period. Franklin mounted a comeback that was too little too late as Eugene Mack scored a pair of goals in the second half of the third period to make the final 5-3 in favor of Latrobe.
Class AAA – Shaler 6 Mt Lebanon 1
Shaler (21-2-0) showed why it was the number one seed in the playoffs with a convincing 6-1 shredding of Mt Lebanon (12-8-5). Zac Lynch and Sean McCue scored in the opening period to give the Titans a 2-0 lead, but Brooks Behling scored on a long slapshot from just inside the blue line with 44 seconds to play. The turning point of the hockey game was when with 12:17 to go in the 2nd period, Billy Dobson intercepted a Travis Lisowski clearing attempt and had a gimme goal to make it 3-1 in favor of Shaler. Patrick Schaefer, Brian Stein and a 2nd goal by Zac Lynch sealed Shaler’s first ever trip to the Penguins Cup in 34 years with a 6-1 victory. Steven Weilersbacher was terrific in goal for the Titans stopping 24 of 25 shots as the Blue Devils outshot Shaler 25-22.

2004-2005 Season
The 2005 Pennsylvania High School Hockey Championships
2003-2004 Season
Pa Hockey's most popular feature by far is the Game Summaries and the 2003-2004 Season will offer more of the same. Last season we covered over 100 Regular Season and Playoff Games and over 130 games including Tournaments and exhibitions.
All of our games the past two seasons have been archived and from time to time we will have 'it happened a year ago or two years ago on this date' feature. If there is a Game Summary that you'd like to have a copy of or would like to see posted......just let us know ! A tidbit below is our 2001-2002 Season Recap .........check it out ........only on Pa Hockey !
2001-2002 Season
Hey ....the first thing I did when arriving home tonight is to hand my three year old son a Flyers Cup program and a copy of Breakaway's High School Hockey Yearbook after exchanging copies of the WPHCA Directory, the bible of Western Pa Hockey with my friends from the Eastern side of the Keystone State !
Visiting with some of my associates from across the State from Flyers Cup land as Pa Hockey flutters it way onto your computer screen.....as my counterparts in Eastern Pa Jeff Nolan and Matt Sacks of the Breakaway Hockey Network and I took the solemn pledge to attend the Pennsylvania State Finals from here on out ...meaning to the inevitable ! Hopefully, Brian Tibbels will make the trip to add his colorful flair and not to soon as coach of his beloved Holy Ghost Prep.
Back in November, over 150 Varsity teams in Pennsylvania began the quest for the holy grail known as the Pennsylvania High School Hockey Championships. And after four months of the regular season and a great month of playoffs, three champions were crowned Pennsylvania State Champions for 2002 at the Rostraver Ice Garden on March 30.
Another sweep for Western Pennsylvania, as Bethel Park put its stamp on AAA supremacy with a heartstopping overtime victory over a terrific Malvern Prep team with a class coach in John Graves, who came within two minutes and a few inches of the Friars winning Pa's top hockey prize, but came up a little short again at the hands of the Hawks !!.
Peters Twp put an exclamation point on a terrific season with an explosive offensive display and a delivered promise ending Archbishop Carroll's third try at the AA crown !!
And Serra Catholic, who is everyone's underdog but just keeps on winning in a three-peat performance pulling out all the stops against an impressive Radnor team, who was a couple of bounces from winning it all !!
The State Finals had first class officiating in all three contests and the guys who wear the zebras handled the Finals games with pride and excellence ....great job fellas !
And finally to all the Pa Hockey Fans, who include coaches, players, parents and even referees, some who like my style and some who don't, but all who contribute to the success of this growing community of Pa Hockey Interscholastic.....Thanks for your e-mails including praise & criticisms ....it is all welcome and sometimes the brutal honesty rubs people the wrong way and to those people, I say don't take it personally !
As one prominent Western Pa person once said to me 'carry a briefcase with you and if someone challenges you, then hand the the briefcase and see if they can do better'......and after being around this for 31 years of Pennsylvania High School Hockey and 27 years of the Pennsylvania High School Hockey Championships, I am still waiting to hand that briefcase ....to Matt Sacks and Jeff Nolan and Sobo and Brian Tibbels and Greg Dugan and Earl Bugaile and Max Pozzuto and Tim Lane....these are people who are the gems of Interscholastic Hockey and I .....Thank You for your interest and dedication in growing the sport and look forward to working with you all going forward !
Thank you to all who support Pa Hockey....over the next few months look for some exciting things happening with this website as we expand our coverage for all to enjoy !
2003-2004 Season
'State of Pa Hockey address'
After arriving home Saturday night after the post-Pennsylvania High School Hockey Championship feast at Damon’s with Breakaway’s Matt Sacks, NA’s Tom Pandolfo, Plum’s Stu Relnick, Central’s Kevin Zielmanski and Billy Zuri and former Central player and current Junior A player Tim Recio, and a great Friday night and Saturday Morning visit with the Eastern Pa coaches John Graves, Mike Graves and Father Ed Casey of Malvern Prep, Bill Hammonds and his staff at Archbishop Carroll, and finally Ed Ritti III and Dave ‘Cook’ Wood from Radnor, along with some very knowledgable parents from all the teams and the Philly Inquirer’s Joe Santoliquito at the Station Square Sheraton prior to the 2004 Pennsylvania High School Hockey Championships. At the RMU Neville Island Sports Center an opportunity to visit with coaches, players, media and parents who attended three pretty good hockey games. Always great to see Mickey McDermott and his sidekick for the day, Rich Cunningham to rout on Mt Lebanon and the EHSHL’s Vinnie Sammartino and Inter-County’s Greg Dugan representing the Flyers Cup. I was very disappointed that my good friend Brian Tibbels and Jeff Nolan could not join us due to other obligations, but look forward to re-kindling with those guys real soon!
It is now time to reflect on the season. The word redemption comes to mind right away as Malvern Prep redeemed three previous trips to the Class AAA State Finals, winning their first Pennsylvania Cup since 1990 and how about Bill Hammonds Archbishop Carroll Patriots, who seized the moment to win their first State Championship since 1981 after 3 unsuccessful trips in 2000,2001 and 2002and finally, for Radnor, who captured their second straight Class A title and avenged a loss to Serra Catholic in the 2002 title. An Eastern Pennsylvania sweep for the first time since 1990 sends a loud message to Western Pennsylvania that the dominance in the Pennsylvania High School Hockey Championships enjoyed by Western Pennsylvania should not be taken for granted.
Here in Western Pa, applause for a great season for Mt Lebanon, who rose to the top winning their 1st Penguins Cup since 1985 in Class AAA. And for Peters Twp for winning their 3rd straight Penguins Cup in Class AA after losing many key players and reloading with youth during the season and into the playoffs. And for Serra Catholic, who lost their head coach John Mooney, but rallied with a very small roster and captured their 4th Penguins Cup in five seasons. Many breakthrough seasons were evident in Western Pennsylvania as Upper St Clair made it to Western Pa’s final 4, Indiana came within six seconds of de-throning Peters Twp in the Penguins Cup final and Somerset won their first ever playoff game on their way to the Class A finals.
In Eastern Pa. we say Bravo ! to the Flyers Cup committee, who took bold steps of creditability to formalize the format of the seedings of the 2004 Flyers Cup. And a commitment from the Leagues to establishing classifications criteria prior to the season for each of the Flyers Cup participants. The growth of the Eastern Pennsylvania Leagues has produced over 100 varsity teams and with the elimination of second varsity teams from the Flyers Cup tournament is a legitimate step in producing a true Pennsylvania High School Hockey championship.
Pa Hockey will take on a bold new look in 2004-2005 as a service to each and every Interscholastic Hockey program in the State of Pennsylvania. We will continue to provide Statewide coverage from wire to wire all the way through the State Finals next spring. With over 225,000 visitors over the first 3 ½ seasons and almost 100,000 this season, we are becoming a popular stop across the United States for all fans of Interscholastic Hockey. Special Thanks to Doug Heck, Dave Scott, Al Palowski, Kevin Zielmanski, Jim McVay, Ron Steedle, Earl Bugaile and Maria Jack for their help throughout the season and during the regular season and playoff broadcasts!
Finally, we would like to thank all of the players, coaches, parents, media and league officials who support Pa Hockey as a service to the community! Make sure to keep your eyes on the Pa Hockey History site as well at www.eteamz.com/pahockeyhistory as we chronicle the beginnings all the way up to today!
2002-2003 Season
Last Season Pa Hockey covered 136 games across Western Pennsylvania as we saw almost every Varsity team !
The 2002-2003 Season brings a goal of seeing every Varsity team in action all the way to Flyers Cup and Penguins Cup [March 22~Mellon Arena] and Pennsylvania Cup [Now on March 30 ~ Ice Line - West Chester] in Philadelphia !

March 30, 2003
The end of another season for Interscholastic Hockey in Pennsylvania !
As the Blue Jeep pulled out of the IceLine and headed for a post game celebration with my Philly brotherhood of Jeff Nolan, Matt Sacks, John Bria and other Philly fanatics, I couldn’t help take a breather and reflect on a great weekend of Pennsylvania Hockey which unfolded. A tip of the hat to John Graves and Greg Dugan and the staff at Ice Line for a wonderful banquet Saturday night and well run Pennsylvania High School Hockey Championships at IceLine. Saturday night a chance to visit with six of the most different but excellent coaches we have in Pennsylvania….John Graves of Malvern Prep, ‘the Doctor’ Jamie Plunkett, Mark ‘Coop’ Cooper and Ed Ritti III, who have been to the State Finals before and have done it their way in spurring their teams to respective Penguins and Flyers Cup Championships in 2003. Then the sentiment set in as my good friends Art ‘King Arthur’ McQuillan of Westmont Hilltop and Brian Tibbels of Holy Ghost Prep finally reached the title game they have coveted for so long, could this be their year………each would face very difficult challenges. A chance to visit with Bob Kohlbacher, Rick Doyle, Greg Dugan, Don Helms, Ken Reddy, Eric Turner, Vinnie Sammartino and the Eastern heads of state and discuss the happenings of Eastern Pa Hockey, while sharing the goings on in Western Pa. Joining us from Western Pa to assist to cheer on their favorite teams and assist in the media coverage were Ed 'Jake' Jacobs' Bob ‘the Bus Driver’, ‘Super Fan’ Dan Lenzi, Doug ‘Super Techno’ Heck, Tribune Democrat’s Mike Mastovitch from Johnstown….WJPA’s Earl Bugaile, Pete Feltovitch, Rick ‘don’t call me Dave’ Tingle from Peters and from Meadville Hap and Haz, WMGW’s Gary Clark and Dick Tedesco, Meadville Tribune’s Mike Pidnanik, Bulldog Invitational staples Carol and Chip McEarlane, Ronnie ‘the MC’ Pusz and a whole host of fans and family ! A trip to the Pennsylvania High Hockey Championships for the 14th time for myself brought home some memories of 1977 [26 years ago], my first trip to Philly for the Finals, which culminated at the old Lafayette Rink in King of Prussia.
The 2003 season ended with several different storylines as Radnor broke the Western Pennsylvania streak of three straight years of sweeps in the Pennsylvania Cup avenging their loss from a year ago to Serra and winning a tight 2-1 game over a very good Westmont Hilltop team. For assistant coach Ed Ritti Jr., a gentleman involved in Interscholastic Hockey in the early 1970’s in helping start the Malvern Prep program culminating in a great win coaching with his son Ed Ritti III and first State Championship for Radnor winning the 2003 Class A Pennsylvania Cup.
Peters Twp capped off an impressive run to a 2nd State Championship with a 9-3 throttling of Holy Ghost Prep in a game that was pretty one-sided from the beginning and placed the Indians with the likes of the most dominant Class AA teams in history including 1999 Thomas Jefferson, 1997 Erie Cathedral Prep, 1994 Greensburg CC, 1984 Canevin or 1982 Erie Fairview teams, who were able to finish the season as State Champions in dominating fashion. Matt Schwartz, Mike Papciak, Matt Clackson, Kyle Kittleberger, Christian Minella, Brandon Rubeo, and the rest of the Indians put a stamp on maybe one of the best teams in State History.
Then there is Meadville, who with the tradition fading a little, gave us one more reminder of why coach Jamie Plunkett is one the best coaches ever to step behind the bench in the State of Pennsylvania, by proving that they can come of a crowd of nearly a dozen teams, who realistically had a chance at the Pennsylvania Cup and rise to the top. The Bulldogs did it with timely goals, great fundamental defense and a refuse to lose attitude that has permeated in Meadville for a long time. The love affair of the Bulldog faithful, the boosters, the players and the coaches reunited and will undoubtedly go on all summer long prior to another banner being raised in the ‘House of Chills’.
As for the future of Interscholastic Hockey, well we all know we should stay tuned to Pa Hockey as the hobby turned website has now over 130,000 visitors and nearly doubled this season………so a big thank you to all of you out there who log on and follow Pa Hockey.
The Pa Hockey History will now be turned up a notch as we begin to recount the past 34 years of
Eastern and Western Pa Hockey with pictures and stories of Pa Hockey. We can’t go without mentioning the end of two great runs by Bethel Park and Serra Catholic, who defeated in the Penguins Cup playoffs while looking for their fourth consecutive Pennsylvania State Championships at Class AAA and A respectively. Both of those schools will return next year looking to return to form. And also we should Bill Hammond’s Archbishop Carroll Patriots, who failed for the first time in four years to make it to the Pa Class AA finals. Maybe without getting into a preview we should look to the future and the likes of Mt Lebanon or LaSalle or Central Catholic or Cardinal O’Hara possibly move into Championship picture in Class AAA or West Chester Henderson, Thomas Jefferson, Abington, or Kittanning at Class AA and finally can Bishop McCort get back in the Class A picture with possibly Bishop McDevitt from the CPIHL or Mr Nolan’s Neshaminy Redskins. I guess we’ll have to wait until November to see another season of Pa Hockey begin! Have a great summer and we’ll be back and better than ever later this year with a clean car courtesy of Mr Nolan ! And as Al Morganti eluded to at the State Championship banquet in his great speech….. remember these things about hockey and life:
Ø You can’t play without laces in your skates they are the cheapest piece of equipment yet the most critical
Ø You need to respect the selfless people at the rinks by being courteous to the rink personnel who groom your playground
Ø Remember that the game is all about fun and you should always play it that way for as long as you can because someday you will appreciate these times
Ø When you leave the rink learn the lesson of Pelle Lindburgh [the brilliant goaltender who lead the Philadelphia Flyers to their last Stanley Cup before dying tragically] that one stupid mistake can take your life
Ø And finally find out what drives you as a player, a coach and a fan …..for me it was the Blue Jeep and the thought of Nolan dressed in a Peters Jersey washing it when he comes to visit this summer…………and maybe just the ‘love of the game’, which really him home as my 4-year old son Jamie waited for me Monday at the door to see his special puck and special books that dad brought home ! Maybe coach Plunkett was right “you don’t appreciate something until its gone”…………..so I say "cherish it while you can"!
