Coming Soon: Mermaid
 | |
04/01/06 >>>>>> Final on the water test today. Boat ( plug) is mostly faired in and we just need to look at a couple more small details before pulling it out for the last time to get ready for molding .... We will be building this boat with a different process than the 15 and 19 so the cost of the boat will be LOWER than the 15 / 19. I really do not see this boat ever weighing over 35 pounds..... even built as a rock crusher.
03 / 28 / 06 >>>>>> Very close. Doing final fairing in the next week. Will have some photos available to email when plug gets to a stage that it is not soooo ugly. Staying awake at night thinking of laying this boat up.
02/0306 >>>>>> Final hull design is there and I am preparing for the great fun of fairing everything in in prep for molding. I wish I had two solid weeks to work on it straight. Final bow and stern shapes are done. As much as I really do not want to do it, rule chances in a couple major races around the U.S are now compelling me to 'flair out' the boat to 20.1" in order to have it still remain in the Sea Kayak catagory instead of being thrown in with the Surfskis and Outriggers. So the width is set. Don't worry, it will not get in the way of rotation or paddle placement and will only increase secondary stability with boat in its side.
11/15/05 >>>>>> New Mermaid stuff ...... After a couple months of new family stuff ,we are back on the Mermaid now that our chief Mermaid test pilot is back to chasing the bumps out in the ocean. After some consideration from where we left off a few months back, the Mermaid is going through some changes to make it faster ( much , please see revised #s below)), a little more foot / watershoe friendly up front, and we are still deciding on some final bow and stern tweeks to tune the boat in the breeze. What we are doing here is properly sizing and developing a high performance boat for slightly less than 'average' size folks who might be hamstrung ( not being able to keep up with your group might not be your fault ) from paddling a too high volume (both hull AND interior ) boat. This boat will fit, be fast upwind, balanced in a cross breeze , and best of all, surf downwind bumps with alacrity. Go ahead and pull away : 0 >>> : )
Please note: We had to submit our specs to the Magazine's Buyers Guides well before we had anything concrete ..... so the #s in new mags will be obsolete before they come out .... sorry. Weights WILL be similar as listed but around 6 -12 oz. heavier.
Some new photos when in the next couple weeks.
A dedicated, no compromise, performance ( Fast Sea Kayak Class) ocean boat for smaller people.
Specifications: Before: 15'9" X 19" ...... Now: Longer than before with a little more secondary ( see above 20.1") but just as skinny underneath. ( Will have some exact waterline #s soon)
Still currently playing around with the coaming size. The fore deck is pretty low and we want it full enough for knees bent and pumping room. Probable #s 15" X 29"- 31" (egg shape) with customizeable ( by us or by you) thigh braces.
AS OF 04 / 03 / 05:
Working on new smaller seat this week, a little more fine tuning of things with final seat before doing the coaming, then off to bigger waves and winds for more R & D. This boat is cracking us up with how we can whip it around. The boat is fast to surf and really likes to be paddled aggressively.... gotta' get the smaller seat in it now and get serious for final tweaks.... then it is off to be faired in for molding..... Will have some new pictures pretty soon. Thanks for staying in touch.
Fun stuff to mention...... I have hit 8 mph on flat water ( two way run) using a regular paddle. I can sit on aft deck and paddle it no problem.
We will be offering an unheard of variety of options with this boat to truly get it set up perfectly for you. Most "options" described below come standard with the boat and are just part your choices when outfitting. A couple will add to the price of the boat.
Some things that we are sure of....
*Fore and aft FOAM bulkheads.... forward bulkhead can be fitted for lowest cockpit volume.
*Cockpit coaming will be available with or without thigh braces. Thigh braces will come in various sizes to best suit your desired fit and paddling style.
*Two different seats w/ many options for seat back / backbands. Have a favorite back band already? Let us know and we will put it in for you.
*Boat will be avaliable with flush hatches as per our Tideline boats or any size and combination of Kajak Sport hatches. No worries to install day hatches either.
*Not sure if we should call this an option but boat will also be available WITHOUT hatches for a smooth, clean look. Installing any of the above hatches down the road is just as simple as doing them when new.
* Tideline skeg or Rudder with your choice of ;
* Several different Foot Brace / Gas Pedal / Footbar Systems.
* As always an unlimited number of custon layups to best suit your intended use and expectations.
* Same story for deck rigging and outfitting.
* All Tideline Kayaks come with your choice of any ONNO paddle.
UPDATE 04 / 03 / 05 : Thanks for checking things out. Just finished up on Foiled Skeg and Rudder systems along with new Gas Pedal / Foot Bar System. These components can be fitted or retrofitted to most boats and will make a big difference in performance and comfort while just about halving the weight of the parts they replace. More info below. Currently have a 25# Carbon 15 and a 30# Carbon 19 for demo. Both have skegs. 19 has new adjustable seat system and is also rigged for the Foiled Rudder system too....
Over the next few weeks we will have more to say about the new Mermaid as on water trials move along..... as always, please feel free to call or write with your suggestions. Thanks.
03/ 07/05
Please also check out the new on-the-water review of the 19 just below..... this how we want you to feel everytime you go out....

TIDELINE 15
14' 10" x 23.25" C/P 31.5 x 17.25
Layups designed and built for your needs. 43-28 lbs.
Fiberglass 2750.00 / Kevlar 3000.00
Carbon... call for quote.
Standard features + optional equipment listed @ bottom.
The TIDELINE 15 is really a fun all around boat that you can use for poking around the marina or estuary to view wildlife or load it up for a coastal trip. The TIDELINE 15 has high initial stability and a fuller cockpit to give you room to breathe... go ahead, bend your knees. The TIDELINE 15 is also very fast for a boat this size. Fine entry and fair lines have helped it win races against longer boats both inland and offshore. The best story (with a happy ending) about the 15 is the time when a guy who had never even seen the 15 before paddled it in the SoCal Senior Olympics and won by almost eight minutes against many longer 'faster' boats with younger paddlers... He ordered his that day. This boat will inspire you to go where you want with confidence. The 15 does have a longer waterline than many boats in it's class. This increase in waterline length is a sound method for reducing resistance and increasing speed and efficiency.
"How stable is it?" ........Compared to what?
I wish every person who is considering any other type of paddlecraft would try a a boat such as this. When the comparison is made, the performance is undeniable. I have watched complete novices (true first timers) tentativly sit in the 15 for the first time....I really watch their faces during the first strokes. Everytime I watch the anxiety ebb and the joy of moving so efficiently through (over?) the water come flooding with a smile. Before long they are asking what else they can do or where else can they go....... I wish I could come up with some philosophical, zen like answer but I just don't have the rapier wit. Put someone who has more than a few miles under her or his keel and they can whip the boat all over the place.........and go fast.
This boat's roomy cockpit will accommodate many (larger) types of paddlers and can be easily managed by a smaller person both on and off the water. In short, a fun versatile boat who's personality and characteristic's will grow with/on you like an old friend. That is my 'ad' copy for now. Please let me know if you have a good one.
For more info and pictures on this and the rest of our line please click on Tideline FAQ+.
Below is TIDELINE 15 with optional retractable skeg.

Some fun, real world, actual persons comparison stuff on the
Paddling this boat @ HR monitor measured 'Fat Burning' pace, which turns out to be just turning the paddle over so it is pretty close to a slow cruising pace. Light breeze ( 8-10 kts.), measured 2 mile course run around the same 'corners' out and back to keep tidal and wind variations as constant as possible.... several runs per paddle through out test. Salt water, mostly over 10 feet deep with a couple shallower spots less than four feet. All paddles within a few cm of each other.
| Resulting average boat speeds: |
| Mid Tour |
19.125" x 6.125" |
4.5 mph |
| Full Tour |
19.125" x 7.125" |
4.5 mph |
| Big Boy |
19.125" x 8.25" |
4.7 mph |
| Endurance Race Wing |
19.5" x 6.5" |
4.8 mph |
| Prototype Wing |
18.5" x 6.25" |
4.8 mph |
| Experimental Wing |
19.25" x 6" |
4.8 mph |
Interestingly, The Mid / Full speeds being the same were surprising....the Mid is just so effortless to 'spin' at these slower speeds. Measured times were also pretty close. So the GPS was not really on the verge of jumping to 4.4 or 4.6 in a second either.
The Big Boy paddle was definately perceived as 'harder; to use. As was the larger of the three wings
The Wings are surprisingly easy to use at this slower pace, but one feels like they are driving a race car in traffic. The smaller wing was probably the most efficient at this pace. Once one starts actually pulling on the paddles then some things change.
When my wife 5' 2" and I are out paddling ( each in a 15 ) and I feel I am moving at a good pace I always worry I am sort of 'pushing' my wife, so I ask her if she is o.k. as I do not wish to turn every trip into some kind of death march for her. "I'm great" is always the reply and we move onward. On to say, this boat is just perfect for two people of varying strengths to keep a 4.5 - 5.7 mph pace and keep both parties happy.
Flatish water, big boat wake or wind chop over 12 kts. Top peak surfing type speeds:
8-9 mph easy to hit, 9.2-10.2 mph any time on the same day, 10.5 + mph on big steeper wakes. See in the ocean below.
Ocean + boat wakes or wind generated chop:
Same as above but longer rides, 10.5 - 11.2 mph can be hit without thrashing to get on larger wind swells. 12 + mph possible but need steeper , faster wind chop. 15 will stay on large boat wakes even against wind chop and prevailing ground swell.... this is so funny to see as it looks like some kind of counterintuitive, fake movie effect.
The 15 will go left to right back to left on the same swell with just a hip flick and stay locked on too.
My wife can drop me on a 1 mile sprint when she is paddling the 15 with a Full tour paddle and I am on our older generation Gator OC-1. Maybe not saying much for my canoe paddling but I am always surprised at how much power, speed and acceleration she gets out of her petite frame while in the 15.....
Scared to think what will happen in the Mermaid.

TIDELINE 19
18' 9" x 20.75" C/P 30.75" x 16.50"
Layups designed custom based on your needs. 50-33 lbs.
Dragon: All carbon + core 25/30 Lbs.
Fiberglass 2750.00 / Kevlar 3000.00
Carbon Dragon ..... please call for quote.
Further info on standard outfitting + optional equipment @ bottom.
Real World weight example:
Kevlar / S-Glass, Epoxy boat with extra kevlar reinforcement for customer specific conditions, standard deck rigging, fore and aft hatches + 6" day hatch, fore and aft bulkheads, Contour Seat w/ sliding Fiberglass Seat Pan, Foiled Rudder and Sliding adjustable Gas Pedal Footbar system ..... = an honest 41 pounds.
The TIDELINE 19, over two years of R&D building prototypes, paddling them in all conditions then going back to the shop to refine "just one more thing". What can I say?....... 2 years of my life were spent refining this boat's shape and then I went crazy fairing it...The result is a very fast boat which does more than just go straight. Our TIDELINE 19 feels alive. Its long waterline helps you pick up small swells and hold course. Low volume stern combined with a higher bow facilitates the nimble connecting of bumps offshore and in rough water. Superfine entry with more volume than apparent and a nice clean release stern a-la surfski merge for a long glide between strokes. Low aft deck for reduced windage, unencumbered maneuverability and laybacks.. Large 9.75"x 15.25" watertight hatches allow you to easily load all you need for multi-day tours. The all day ergonomics of a fuller cockpit invites you paddle knees bent if you wish. Be comfortable, fast and have fun with your life.
For more info on construction for all TIDELINE kayaks please click on Tideline FAQ+.
If you want to go fast in the ocean with confidence this is the boat for you.
This boat is a joy to paddle.
Thank you.
For those of you asking for a review of the 19, I just got a nice one, here it is. I love all the energetic, animate type comments and references. The boat was designed for these conditions and I have been forever saying I would add some similar, real world info to site for just the type of sea state described below. I also wish to have photos and video to back it all up. We DID have video of the roughest testing day but lost the camera saving the boat ...( The Boston Whaler support boat ) .. not the kayak... A long story to add along with more infomation on how this boat evolved for rough conditions by paddling in them.
A windy night's review on the Tideline 19.
Our windchimes were rattling, the papaya trees were scraping the house like some monsters hand and the drone of heavy rain with squalls on top was charging me up instead of lulling me to sleep. It's 3 am.
I sit up and state... " I have to do it."
Donning my full suit I head out and load up the boat and paddle.... the trees overhead are doubling over with the puffs.
As I crest the hill and look over to see the bay, the water is illuminated by whitecaps.
Its rare the blows this hard for any length of time here. As I pull into the spaces I recall rendezvousing with the guys at the same parking lot many years ago at any hour to get some shortboard sailing in.... No one around but me this time. From the feel of the breeze and look of the water it is defintely blowing 20 - 25 with the typical bigger puffs on top of that out in the middle. Wind chop is close spaced @ 2-3' max with spray blowing off the tops + quick bursts of rain rounding things over a bit too...
I dare not take my hands off the boat as I unstrap it. The wind pulls hard it as I lift the boat off and set it down in the lee of the car. Next is the paddle. Just for fun I 'fly' the wing while holding it by the opposite blade... "new sport" I say out loud.
Lock up the car, wear my key under the suit and off to the the waters edge. Try to get the boat to luff as I carry it... doesn't work......... I let go of it for a second on the beach and it starts to blow away........doh! ".......Don't do that anymore."
Chop is breaking on the beach so I wade out into a couple feet of water, face upwind, straddle and flop into seat and set everything up as I drift backward. The plan is to keep close to shore to feel things out. Paddle upwind and run / play back down.
Besides pulling, have to actually push the paddle into wind. The boat moves forward without hesitation and is little effected by the chop freight-training towards it. No green water over foredeck as 'we' steam upwind. Keeping the paddle lower helps cut down wind resistance. The ONNO Endurance Wing does not dive or flail off course. As I work upwind I tack the boat to port and starboard. The boat holds course even as I point it deeper and deeper off the breeze......." Damm ! ",..... I giggle to myself as the boat is not getting blown around and feels totally balanced. The 19 points straight ahead with balanced, paddling strokes. Even on a beam reach, with the winds trying to rip the paddle out of my hands, things feel normal. A few strokes and some edging bring the 19 right around to the other tack. This is a bit faster with the rudder down but still not necessary.
After working upwind and messing around for a while I turned the boat around and headed downwind with much anticipation.
All I can say is............WOW ! The boat came alive! I can honestly state that after many years of paddling various kayaks I have never had so much fun as with paddling this boat.
In the fast running, non-stop chop, I could simply pick any down wind course / line I wanted and the boat would just surf away straight as an arrow. The bow never went under or pearled no matter how fast I went. It was just non-stop, confident, fast running speed. With some euphoria induced strokes I barely lost speed on the 'gybes'. Even as I stalled it and tried to 'stuff' the bow into the wave in front the boat simply surged ahead unfazed.......... "This thing is an organic feeling, fun machine" I said to myself.
Conclusions:
I love this boat.
The Tideline 19 is a living machine. Those who like to paddle in the bumps and wind will be rewarded by the fastest, most 'alive' boat they have ever paddled. If you paddle regular conditions, you can be confident that you are in one of the most capable, fastest, self assuring boats you will find yourself ever owning. On the business side, Patrick was super knowledgeable, friendly and helpful with any questions I had. The purchasing experience almost out did the boat's performance. Cannot wait for the Mermaid to come out for my wife.

A few words on the word...tracking.
I feel that boats which track dead straight no matter what are too stiff and no fun to paddle. This is a sacrifice of desirable maneuverability. Boats should not require constant attention to keep them straight in a breeze either.
Good tracking for me is a boat which is easily kept on course in difficult conditions but can also be "adjusted" rightaway for whatever is thrown at it. Reacting instinctivly to subtle trimming and body input like a properly fit, classic geometry road bike. Get it right and you can go for miles, having fun and suprising yourself each time you go out. This is what Tideline kayaks do.

Builder's Corner
New for '05 we will be offering various components for kit builders and those looking to retrofit new ancilliaries.
We are offering the very same components we have pondered over, trialed and errored, and finally decided on as being the best possible fits for our own Tideline boats.
All of these parts are built with pride by one person using epoxy + various weaves of cloth in white ,black or clear with the glass being the surface layer as per our Tideline boats. Carbon is also available. The layups are done with lightweight performance in mind. Each part's construction can be fabricated to your desired specs. if need be.... just let us know what you are thinking / picturing.
Beside the obvious, why are we offering these components ???
If you have ever attempted to build your own cockpit combing or seat you would not have to ask.
Hard to describe the following without feeling like some generic, faceless, out of touch marketing group.......
Fitting these parts will save you TONS of time. In our humble opinion, this is more valuable than anything. Because these components will drop right into your project, you can spend more time on the kayak itself and worry less about the ancillaries. We feel also feel the white, black, 'clear', or carbon parts highlight and cosmetically enhance any boat. Please feel free to call or write with any specific questions you might have..... no presure ever........ here to help.
These parts take ALOT OF TIME to design and build. Each of our components are well designed, optimized for real world use and built with lightweight performance in mind. These are the very same parts we put in our Tideline kayaks and use ourselves every (other;) day. These parts are right.
03 / 15 / 05
Thoughts and comments on our new component stuff..... 03 / 15 / 05 ..... please remember the date.
As the paddling market grows, medium size companys are gradually being bought up by and assimilated with larger ones. There seems to be a ever increasing splintering off between the mainstream, generic, big box offerings and the specialty custom shops / builders. We proudly are one of the latter....
What we are trying to do here is offer correctly designed, thoroughly tested, well made, zero compromise products that will enhance your paddling experience. You will never ( probably : ) see our products in stores but we predict you will see something like them in the future as demand from well versed consumers compels the larger manufacturers to finally develop their own watered down versions. Please remember you saw them here first even as huge ad campaigns are built around some "newly-created-just-for-you-by-us" plastic, over-underengineered products are billboarded in the Magazines.
We are NOT saying you NEED this stuff to get on the water and have a ton of fun and this is not gram counting as in some sectors of the cycling market..... We are humbly offering products which will enhance your enjoyment of the paddling experience and performance of your kayak. I know this might sound 'out there' but the closer you can attempt to connect and interface with your boat on an organic level, the better off you will be. That is what we are shooting for here and why all of our Tideline Kayaks come with these parts fitted as standard.
We like to think we are creating and raising a new aftermarket-product-baby here.
These components represent the highest construction level (strength and light weight) you will ever find in this sector of the industry.....although there ARE ways to do them faster.....which will no doubt be employed by the big guys down the road....... think mushy, isotropic, injection molded plastic.
Each of our components has been developed with YOU in mind..... if you are asking us why, you already are who we are working for.
Thanks for listening.....
Most sincerely,
pat
Finally Finished ! Foiled Carbon Rudder Systems
While imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I have heard of numerous cases of this design being copied ....... please give credit where it is due.
Please note we have a bunch to say about these and will post info asap....
These rudder kits will drop into just about any boat already set up for a pin type system, which we like better because they do not drag 1/2 the housing in water. Can be adapted to retrofit to stern ( transom) type mounts too. They are as compact as possible while not having the blade come cleaving down as with a small diameter control sheave.
Complete kit price 350.00 / Cored Carbon Ultralight 400.00
While imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I have heard of numerous cases of this design being copied ....... please give credit where it is due.
Complete kits include:
Carbon foiled blade.
Carbon / S-Glass housing w/glass reinforced block.
Ultra Low stretch control line + clam cleat.
Pad eye + length of bunji for above.
Carbon/ S- Glass Rudder blade 'dock'.
Enough S.S. 7 x 7 wire plus thimbles and crimps for any long single or tandem.
Entire system (NOT including SS wire) weighs just under a pound.

A new multi-purpose rudder is here. Code name p-41
We have been working on this rudder since the summer and it is finally done.
Still having trouble loading photos .... here is a link to some photos of new rudder. Please scroll down a bit. Will write more in soon about this wonderfully versatile system. We have been supplying these for Huki for some time now and they have been called " The nicest rudder in the world." We think they make the nicest Surfskis and Outrigger Canoes in the world. Feel free to ask. http://huki.com/s1.php?boat=s1r
Here is a nice quote about the p-41
When we designed the S1-R, we wanted an optional kick up rudder for it. We've had Patrick at Onno Paddles develop what I consider to be the finest kick up rudder for racing ever made. He worked a long time perfecting it and it is so far ahead of SeaLine, it makes SeaLine's rudder look like complicated/heavy/poorly-thought silliness.

Gas Pedal / Footbar (Prototype Shown)
12/ 12/ 05 At left is a prototype Gas Pedal / Foot Bar system as installed on Yakima footbraces. 03 / 15 05 The final version is finished with all carbon components. This system will bolt right into any standard foot brace system on any boat and be ready to go in less than 15 minutes. The system can also be supplied with it's own mounting brackets which allow you to eliminate your standard footbrace system all together. These take a little more work ( drill two holes) to install but require no special tools or techniques.
Infinitely adjustable:
The height AND angle of the footbar can be adjusted. The pedals can be adjusted forward or back on the footbar itself to best suit your paddling preference and footwear used. ( Happy to discuss what I mean here).
These systems allow one to tune the rudder action for slow subtle movement of the blade ( flatwater racing, sprints, or just a tiny bit to compensate for wind, current or tidal effects for example) or for faster, longer throw, rudder action for active use such as downwind surfing type conditions for example. Switching between the two takes only a figurative second to change.
Besides above features, why change at all???
These systems have a large, solid, non- spongy surface for useful multiple foot placements and a more comfortable, efficient transfer of energy. You will be able to paddle with your feet and legs in a far more ergonomic, user friendly position allowing leg pumping freedom while still retaining full bracing ability, but from more positions. Once it is set up how you like it, the footbar will feel like a pair of well broken in leather gloves.... just right everytime. You will wonder how you dealt with the stock setup. ( Do not know why glove analogy seems better than well broken in boots or shoes : )
No more splayed out hips or 'wound up' knee and ankle joints.

CARBON FOOT PEG SYSTEM
More surface area, realistically unbreakable, half or less the weight, direct retrofit to standard mounting holes ( or custom), zero maintenance, no wiggling components, available as a 'gas pedal' Rudder Control System or ready to accept our Footbar / Footbar Gas Pedal system + best of all ...... Adjustable angle.
Foot Pegs 150.00 or 200.00 as a Gas Pedal Kit. ( not shown) complete with fittings for install. / Cored Carbon Ultralight 300.00 (pedals included).
While imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I have heard of numerous cases of this design being copied ....... please give credit where it is due.
Carbon Skeg Box
Please note: We use a Stainless Steel allen head bolt for the skeg axle. This round head bolt was the only thing we had in shop at the time we had time to shoot the picture. Thank you.
Carbon Skeg Box KIT
Here is our Skeg Box and why we think we are raising the bar by building the best on the market.
Foam cored blade with not just a foiled shape but the BEST all-round foil shape for reduced drag with a wide stall angle since boats do not travel in a perfectly straight line. All metal interface spots ( axle & cable pivot) on blade are super reinforced to last.
Low volume, boat packing friendly cassette box which is easy to install. Box is just large enough to fit blade and fittings.
Overkill Stainless steel control cable and fittings which work with a smooth housing and real world brass fittings and Stainless hose clamps. Kit comes with plenty of fittings + housing and control cable length to mount as you see fit.
Recessed, 1/2 round adjuster ball mounting plate and slider ball with easy to set up allen set screw.
Detailed every-base-i-can-think-of-to-cover instructions for mounting and tuneing.
These Skeg Kits WILL NOT ! Leak, kink cables, require constant maintenence, detract from boat's appearance or bewilder it's user.
These Skeg Kits WILL ! Allow one to fine tune a boats handling in the breeze, see right where the skeg is at any time vis-a-vis the no brainer ball in position set up and enhance the performance and range of said boat.
Because time is the largest expense in building these, we are only offering these in Carbon. The first ply inside the box is white glass to cut down on galvanic interaction between the carbon blade and associated hardware + the white lights up the inside of the box so it is alot easier to see what is going on in there.
We are happy to do the box and blade in white if you wish though.
Complete turn key Skeg Box Kit : 300.00
While imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I have heard of numerous cases of this design being copied ....... Please give credit where credit is due.
Skeg Slider Ball
Shown here is the slider ball as installed on a 19. The Skeg Kit comes with the 1/2 round recess part as well.... this bonded in after cutting a 1" X 4" slot where you wish to have slider at.
Ball has a nice S.S. allen set screw which just takes a second or two to set up, no guessing where the skeg is at. The geometry of skeg : slider is such that when ball is @ the halfway point of recess the skeg is halfway down. Simple to tell what is going on. Can you really tell what cog you are in with 10 in back now? The slider and associated cable is overkill strong and does not have any dissimilar metal interfaces to rust or corrode. It requires no real maintenance...... not sure if I should say this or not, but I do not do anything to mine, I also would not put the boat away for a week with the box packed with mud either.
The 1/2 round housing is not exactly 1/2 round and I need to think of more efficient word to name / describe it better. On to say this protrudes VERY little into cockpit space. You could probably have it under your thigh brace and it might not bother you..... but the tiny bit of cable and housing might. It IS a good idea to really sit in boat and visualize not just the outside placement but how it will effect things on the inside too. Worse case would be finding a sweet spot for it on outside and cutting through part of your hull deck seam for lack of sticking your head in there.
A good spot to put this is just within grasp and not in a place where your knuckles or paddle shaft will hit it. The ball sticks up just a tiny bit. We like it this way as you can find the ball easier than groping deep for it. When you don't have a chance to look. It's just there. Ball is available in blue as shown, black, real red, and kelly green. Beware the nautically studious if you put a red ball on the starboard side :)
Contour Seats
Fiberglass Contour Seat shown with optional Seat Pan.
Seat can be bonded in or used with either one of two available seat pans. This seat will also retrofit to most 'hung' seats. Happy to discuss. Two different Seat Pans for different hull shapes.
This seat is all day comfortable. The back can be adjusted for height as well as fore / aft lean. A LOT of thought went into this simple seat.
Please notice the simple, elegant seat back adjusting "system". While big manufacturers are competing with each other to see who can complicate and clutter the cockpit / seat area with the most small parts made out of rustable metal and over engineered plastic we stand by our "system" to actually still work in a year. This Contour Seat is also dynamic in that as you lean back the seat slightly flexes to hold you in better... upon sitting back up it ' lets go' for good, torso rotating, forward stroke form.
Somehow I should patent this.
CONTOUR SEAT:
White, black or 'clear' fiberglass 225.00
Seat Pans:
 | | | | Contour Seat In Optional Carbon Layup |
A nod for SEAT PANS..... these allow infinite, tool free, fore and aft adjustment and even a little side to side adjustment as well. Have to do a l-o-n-g crossing with a beam wind and do not relish the thought of edging the ( non-skegged or ruddered or non-Tideline 19 ) boat for a few hours? Pop the seat and slide it over an inch and paddle symmetrically in comfort. The Seat Pan will protect the hull in one of the most vulnerable spots too, under all your weight. If you happen to get lifted upon a pointy protrubarence or skid into a submerged stump your boats momentum will probably let it glance off to one side or the other. Worse would be to ride over it until it gets to your butt whereupon the max stress on the hull will occur. If there is another panel ( Seat Pan ) there to distribute and resist the point loads before they reach hull breaching numbers your day can go on with the smug satisfaction that you made a good choice ;)
SEAT PANS:
Rounded Arch or Shallow Vee
75.00 for white, black or 'clear' fiberglass / 150.00 for Cored Carbon Ultralight.
Do I need the Pan to use the Seat ?
No, if you know the sweet spot for weight placement in your boat, do not do tons of pointy rock landings or worry about it if you do, and / or are not the type to move things around once you found the right set up, then the Contour Seat will bond or bolt right in.
We also offer cut to fit Seat and Back pads too.
While you can contact cement or velcro them in we like to just place them (butt pad) on the seat prior to launching. Nice thing about this they are always ( at least at the start ;) clean, dry and grit free. Because they might blow away after you get out you always take care of them. Nice to have something to sit on out of the boat anyway. When finished just dunk in water to rinse off for next time. We use ours to pad the boats on the racks after aforementioned dunking.
20.00 Set ...... Free with Contour Seat + Seat pan combo.
Unfinished Cockpit Coamings:
 | | | Unfinished Cockpit Coamings | |
We like to be able to paddle knees bent and working up and down, uninhibited from tight cockpit coamings. This is why all our boats are built with full, roomy coamings. A nice byproduct of this is more air circulation, easier in / egress and the ability to pull ones leg out for a stretch / cooling off.
Shown is a Tideline 19 Coaming in white fiberglass right off the mold..... IT IS NOT FINISHED HERE..... I am showing it like this to give one some idea of how much material is there to be shaped and fine tuned to suit your personal preferences. INSIDE dimensions are 31" X 16.75". Besides the large thigh brace area, there are also vertical flanges on either side behind these to allow the seat to be bolted in and have the combing hold it rather than bonding / seatpanning to bottom of boat. Coutour Seat fits of course.
Cockpit Coamings:
100.00 in white, black or 'clear' fiberglass.
Carbon fiber 200.00
Finish sanded ( as seen on Tideline kayaks ) and shaped to your specs. Add 45.00
Slightly larger and fuller shaped ( 31.5 X 17.25 ) Tideline 15 Coaming same cost as above.
Shown here is a side view of a UNFINISHED Tideline 19 Coaming and the Contour Seat prepped and drilled to bolt onto the vertical Coaming flange. The Contour seat will fit most boats with this type of set up. Need to know a couple specs from your boat and I can tell you if it will work. Please call to check. One can still use coaming bolt in system and have the seat pan too.
FIBERGLASS BOAT COCKPIT
 | | | 15 C / P |
Standard on all boats:
* Fore and aft flush hatches
* Fore and aft bulkheads with the forward bulkhead installed based on height for lowest cockpit volume.
* Standard deck rigging ( end toggles, bunji, etc. available in various colors ) or supplied fittings for custom install after sorting out how you wish for it to be .... no problem for me to do this for you.
* Paddle float paddle webbing on aft deck.
* Yakima Touring Footbraces in 10", 13" or 14.625" length.
* Bonded in Contour Seat... position based on your weight and paddleing style / intended use.
* Your choice of ANY ONNO Touring or Surf paddle .... Wings add 200.00 per paddle. NOT taking the paddle will not lower boat price : )
* Choice of coamings with or without thigh braces.
* As always, each layup is tailored to your intended use, waters paddled, your weight and desired weight ( boat ) after going over details on the phone. No problem to beef up certain areas for different waters paddled or to add some extra material right where boat sits on car racks for added durability if traveling alot off road for example.
Options:
Please add any above accessory prices as listed to boat cost. The 'discount' is having them installed and dialed in to perfect long term working order by the actual person who designed and built them. Each of these components are hand built and work together perfectly. Installing them properly takes some time to do. Price is the same if you chose to do it yourself..
Please note, a rudder needs footpedals to operate and our system is less than half the weight of the other 'toe control' systems out there and costs the same.
Day hatches 4", 6" or 8" white, black or clear...... please add 50.00.
New boat prices .... now like everyone else and not feeling so great about that.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. Yep, I just finished up a 19 that just killed me on time and I have now found that I just cannot build the boats for my old prices anymore. In the past ( before baby) I had plenty of time to do them even though I had to work late, no worries. I even had my wife helping me out alot ...... Now my wife is taking care of baby and in order for me to do my share I really cannot justify building the boats as 'fill in' time between all the paddles I have to build. ....... I am losing money building boats : 0 . Since the paddles go on hold or customers just get turned off by having to wait. I am losing sales and getting an even worse reputation for being hard to get ahold
of...... something has to give and I have to make some heavy handed changes to things. This latest 19 drove the point home for me in a sobering way. If I could start all over, it would be nice to just
keep the boats lined up with less phone time as compared to the paddles but I cannot stop building paddles. Each part on these boats is done by myself ..... From waxing the molds and laying in up to 50 separate plys ( as opposed to 5-6 heavy isotropic ones other manufacturers use ) with more
expensive, harder to work with epoxy, to machining the tiny rudder blocks to wrapping them up for shipping. I love building them, but financial reality is now taking over and I have to kow tow to it for the best thing for my family and myself for the future. I know simply raising the prices is not 'buying' me more time but it is keeping it worthwhile to continue blocking out some time to build them and if I were even more honest to myself, they should cost 4 X what they do now. Please know this is NOT some preplanned thing I have been thinking and plotting forever ...... this last boat just put things in perspective. I HAVE TO start charging more for these wonderful boats....... but I still think they will be worth it.This last one fully rigged with a rudder, Seat Pan, Footbar, bulkheads, hatches including a third day hatch and extra kevlar reinforcement in the hull came
in at 41 pounds. This realistic set of new prices is probably going to cost me a few sales and I really feel bad for that. I sincerely apologize to those of you who had a boat in mind or had expectations of getting one in the near future if I have now yanked your high hopes of finding the ultimate value in a custom kayak. I am sorry and zero hard feelings if you are no longer interested in one of my boats. I simply have to keep my head (+ a medium and an extra, extra small one) above water.
Thank you.
