ONNO Paddles
all paddles
Dear Paddler,

Hello and thank you for your interest in ONNO paddles. I have been caught off guard by the enthusiastic response from my ads. I now find myself hunting and pecking my 'brochure' in less than glamorous form. Any information not contained here may be obtained by calling me direct.

The profiles: Names subject to claim more personality.

I have several to chose from. I can tune/modify them all for your specific purpose. I do not charge for heavier layups, extra material at blade tips, etc. Depending on the season, your full custom paddle will ship in 7-10 days. Sometimes one piece paddles get out a little faster.

Fitting ONNOs to you.
At ONNO, our 'interactive' sizing chart is old fashioned.... We use our ears and our brain..... We actually listen and talk with you about your personal preferences, expectations and intended uses for real world, get it right the first time specific sizing. We will never try to confine you to some kind of chart.

Wondering if maybe you should go just a cm bigger or smaller to really get specific? One uncovered detail will usually tip the scale and lock in the right choice. Want to hear the how changes in feather angle feel and effect performance? Fire away.

While we are in no way saying we know better than you and would NEVER force our way someone. Often times folks just are not sure WHAT they should go for. Maybe considering something totally different that you have not tried out yet ? Or thinking you might have got the wrong size? Not sure what to base what you are thinking about on? Ask the chart???

We talk with lots of good folks everyday about this stuff and hear the feedback + we are out on the water WAY overthinking things to better our repertoire of advice and experience to relate to you.... Call us for an opinion. In keeping with todays society, you always have someone to blame if it's not right...ha ha. We tell every one who orders a paddle from us to let us know if its not right... and we will work it out.... no worries.

More than happy to discuss any specific questions you might have.... as always..... no pressure ever ..... here to help.

Thanks for keeping it 'live'

SMALL TOUR
Small Tour
LENGTH 19.125, WIDTH 5.125
If you: paddle with a high cadence, paddle regularly in wind over 18 knots, or are not a giant, you will like this paddle. Just enough to keep hull speed if you need to without excess stress on your joints. Ultimate kids paddle? Weights of this paddle are LESS than averages listed.

FEATHER
feather
LENGTH 19", WIDTH 5.5"
While we like the Small Tour and will continue toy (< typo left in on purpose) build it. We really do not think it is the best that can be done for what it is supposed to be for. Some would use it a high wind/low windage paddle, others would use it to lessen stress and loads on the joints, some have bought it for kids to use.... and it is fine for all of the above but now, as of this Spring of 05' we have something better. Introducing the Feather.

I really like the name 'Feather' for this paddle. Feather Tour does not really sound right........ Soft is the best description and Soft Tour is the strongest suggestive genre-name especially after consulting the Thesaurus for options to 'soft'. Lots of choices, no options. Feather it is, besides, it does have an organic shape.

Other than the Small Tour, this paddle will not compete with or replace our other paddles in any way. It is a small area paddle with way less loading than the Mid but it will have more power than the current Small Tour while feeling about the same load wise. This paddle has a very gentle catch, a mild power phase you can still pull on and a super clean release while still being balanced for mixed paddling styles. It will never be our best seller, but it is worth it to build this paddle.

If the all of the fun things or hard work you have done in your life are taking their toll on your body now, this might be a nice option for you. We hope this paddle helps keep you healthy and feeling good on and off the water. Weight is less than the Mid Tour in each layup.

MID TOUR
Mid Tour
LENGTH 19.125, WIDTH 6.125
Designed specificly for the long haul. Plenty of power for bracing/rolling or the occasional surf. This is a paddle you can go farther with.

MID TOUR +
onno sm
19.125" X 6.375" Image soon
Code name: JCD
We have had folks ask for a paddle with slightly more power than the Mid Tour while still remaining in the cruising realm of things. This paddle is a slightly puffier Mid Tour. Not much wider but a little fuller in the throat and tip.
Just a bit more hookup when pulling on it hard....

FULL TOUR
Full Tour
LENGTH 19.125, WIDTH 7.125
All the power you need in a blade that is equally at home in the surf or pushing a tandem upwind. High angle fitness or long slow cruising.

MID or FULL???
These are the most popular designs. I have men 6ft. 4in. using the mid and women 4ft. 6in. paddling the full. I can help you decide. The FULL can be tuned down to match your desired cadence if the MID is a bit small. If you are considering purchasing two paddles, I suggest going with one of each if they are to be used by the same person.

~ Variety is the very spice of life. ~

An example to help or further confuse.
My brothers and I are basically the same size, strength and ability. If we are paddling the exact same boats at a conversational pace, the one/s with the Full Tour paddle/s will slightly edge away from the MID Tour user/s over time. Upon switching paddles around the same thing happens.....though at first it is hard to notice.

When I talk with you we can go over what you are expecting from the paddle and how you plan to use it. One minor factor will usually tip the scale towards the Mid or Full. Still Cannot decide? Please read on. Even when switching back and forth at a cruising pace the Mid and Full feel similar.

The Full has more power available and you can tell as soon as you start pulling on it harder. Then you might notice the Mid does not quite hook up as much as the Full. The Full is better if you like to paddle with a slower cadence or are pushing a heavier SOT. I would also suggest this paddle if you like to workout at a faster pace , say 5/8ths or more of your boat's top speed for sustained periods and or like to play on wind and ground swells , boat wakes or the occasional surf. This paddle is NOT too big as to bog ones cadence down too a point of inefficiency. You can still 'spin' it no problem. This is still my favorite all round profile. The Mid would be easier on your body , cumulatively speaking....... on a long trip multi-day trip with less than perfect resting conditions for example. Still has power to keep moving upwind o.k. Just not as much for fooling around.
Weight difference is negligible.

Coming Soon F.A.S.T. TOUR

BIG BOY
Bigboy
LENGTH 19.125 X 8.25" *
This blade fills the void between the FULL TOUR and the WINGS. TONS of power without changing your stroke and posture. Race ready when you are. Please see "fine tuneable" in ONNO FAQ+ or call for sizing questions.

WWWSURF
Surf WhiteWater Play/Rodeo:
LENGTH 18.50, WIDTH 8.0
This paddle has full width shoulders and a narrower tip to give just the right amount of precision while on the wave face or tossing rodeo moves. Need to get out? Dig in for full power WITHOUT the flutter. Please note: Weights listed are for a Surf Layup. WW layups are a little heavier due to the necessity of overbuilding them for errant terra firma meetings.

NEWAVE
newave
A Newave is here for those who love the surf. Tons of instant, variable-for-each-situation acceleration, precision rudder strokes + Flatop like braces with positive roll support. We did not set out to copy or imitate some ancient design, this paddle emerged from our design imaginations and evolved from some fanatical, on-the-water R&D. We have spent alot of time on the Newave. A paddle this big is not supposed to be so smooth.
While i for one try to avoid 'trendy' words, i still cannot help but think "Tribal" upon studying this paddle. I think the early Pacific Islanders were onto something as this shape did not come about by chance. Just like the present. O   ld   N   ew   N   ew   O   ld    defined.

WINGS
NewEnduranceRaceWing
Right up there with the bicycle chain in terms of efficiency. Lots of handwork goes into these. One of the lightest on the market. Very stiff. The blades not the price. Built to order. Questions on this and other wings? Please see comments in ONNO FAQ+ or just call.

Please note, these paddles are hard ( for non button pushers like myself ) to get a good shot of. These paddles DO have just the right amount of twist to them.

O.K. New camera here and this is a new shot of the Sprint, Endurance and Smaller Endurance Race Wings ...... need to get a nicer one of the twist. Sorry if they look a little funny .... all the paddles have the same basic twist to them and the bigger they are the more the twist runs ...... hope this makes sense.

More on Construction and pricing below.

racewings.jpg
O.K. we have been making these New Endurance, Sprint and Touring Wings for some time now and now have time to write some stuff about them.

As usual we can build them to any length and feather angle you wish as well as do them in a one or super snug, precise two piece. Layup may also be tailored to your intended use...... from rock bashing to featherweight. Just ask. Happy to go over any specific sizing details too 1 - 1/2 cm increments no problem.... just let us know what you are thinking / picturing. We can help decide.

These 'Next Generation' wings are a jump forward in wing paddle design ..... a little more twist and a 'teardrop' shape make for a powerful, efficient profile. Paddlers who use a wing everyday have recorded Personal Bests on their everyday loop first time after switching to one of these paddles. Even though these are full race paddles, they are still forgiving. These paddles have a super firm catch and do not 'dive' or attempt to fly off in some odd direction even in a wild sprint. They are rock solid throughout second third of the stroke too but my favorite part is how cleanly they release.... no hesitation or 'sticking' just right and out ready to go... This is nice when chasing the bumps and just hitting that one more stroke to pop the boat on.... The lighter weight helps the whole time you are trying to surge ahead.

We have tons of time invested in getting these things right. We even built up several paddles with different blades on each side to get instant feedback of what worked and what did not between various profiles. These same paddles then got matching mates and were time trialed again against each other just to confirm.

Endurance Race Wing 19.5" X 6.5"
Sprint Wing 20." X 7.125"
Smaller Endurance Race Wing 18" X 6"

Which one? Have more to say here than I have time to write for now.... please call for more detailed info. Happy to discuss...... no pressure ever...... here to help.

Touring boat, SOT and recreational paddlers.... you CAN use these paddles everyday. Not saying these paddles are not harder on the body at first, but it's o.k. to just noodle around with them too. Please see Smaller Endurance Race Wing and Touring Wing for other choices.

Synapsized:

ENDURANCE RACE WING ... Widest potential range here. Sea kayaks - Surfskis + Folks who want to keep SOTs right at 'the wall'. As described above, powerful and forgiving. If you are currently using an older generation wing in the 20" -21" range you will be blown away by the feel and greater power of this new shape. Perfect for long distance racing and fast paced fitness paddling.... these are the best profiles you can buy today.

SPRINT WING ... For strong paddlers and / or folks looking for a ultra powerful paddle to use with a slower cadence. This is one of the most powerful wings on the market.... This paddle WILL hit you back if you push it..... be honest with yourself..... can you really spin this thing with efficiency? Gotta have the power for a Sprint. If you have a slender, diesel engine type physique I opine you would be better off with the Endurance profiles. Another fun thing the Sprint Profiles are good for besides keeping your boat at 10/10ths is just cruising around..... sort of like riding around town in the big ring on a cold day. This larger profile WILL get you a couple more 10ths on the top end. Sort of like that 54 you have been saving for the race to the next post.

Weights slightly higher than Endurance Race Wing #s listed.

SMALLER ENDURANCE RACE WING ... FINALLY FINISHED !!! : 0 : )   ... I really like this one and the REAL inspiration behind this are smaller folk who are less strong. NOT necessarily pound for pound less strong but who just might not have the absolute power to turn over one of the 'regular' size wings out there with the balanced, ergonomic efficiency a larger person would. Please do not settle for a wing that is just too big for you. This paddle has had our full attention while testing and developing the new Mermaid boat.... these two are a perfect match. Scaled down for YOU.

Other uses for this Wing:
For regular Sea kayak use both fast pace fitness / racing and touring this paddle is really nice .... still has much more power than a 'regular' paddle but with scalpel-like manners and efficiency. Please do not be fooled by its smaller size.... you will be suprised for sure. Just ask the person passing you who is using one   : )
If your boat does not have a high potential top speed yet you wish to paddle with the utmost efficiency then this works great......why 'floor it' going up hill by using a bigger paddle when you can only go so fast anyway. In other words you can pull and pull on the Endurance Race or Sprint wings but if your boat 'hits the wall' before you reach a cadence you can 'spin' thoughout your day on the water at the given speed, you are just beating yourself up needlessly.

Real fun for rougher water use too where you might need to rip the paddle out for a suprise brace now and then... .

This is THE multisport, long disance "Challenge Race" paddle for those who are looking to push themselves on and off the water.

Because you might not know it 'till you try .....

Weights are slightly lighter than Endurance Race Wing #s listed.

Touring Wing ("F3") ... 17 X 6"

These wing paddles are designed to have a softer entry or "catch" than the race wings and a wide mid range powerband. It's smaller profile is all that is needed to keep a touring pace for paddlers both big and small. If the Race Wings are the razor like Scalpels then these are the supersharp German kitchen knives. Efficient with a wide range of uses but still intended to do one job specifically very well.
The less agressive profile of the Touring Wing also allows a clean, soft release. More tolerant of less than perfect form and can be paddled with a wide range of strokes ( including low angle ) mile after mile, day after day. These characteristics are ideal for any touring paddle and combined with the efficiency of the wing they make for a nice way to go for someone looking for something fun, fast and forgiving.

Weights are less than Endurance Race Wing #s listed.

CANOE / OUTRIGGER: P-FLEX/P-FLEX BENT SHAFT
A famous outrigger paddler/boatbuilder with 25 years experience handed me his fastest template and told me to build it strong and light. Paddle side by side with other race blades. Experience counts. I highly recommend one of these as a light weight backup paddle. They are a fun and very efficient means of propelling a kayak. Full time? Sure, works best if you pad yourself a bit higher and sit more upright. (Adjust seat). I can here the fun. Or is that howls?

Friday, February 3
CONSTRUCTION: 3 different ones, give or take.
NEW for 06'    ALLGLASS
This year we  introduce an all ( S-Glass) Fiberglass model. This is our "Allglass" paddle as seen (listed for 06')  in Canoe and Kayak Magazine Buyer's Guide.  This is one of the strongest paddles in the industry. We are not shooting for super super light weight with this one so the weight will be about the same as most manufacturer's "Premium" fiberglass models.. I ask please compare cost, similar to those plastic 'carbon' injection molded paddles + the blades are stronger and come right off the same molds that have put us where we are today.
This paddle will be perfect as a super duty, skinny water or bomber back up paddle.   The Allglass level will be available in any of our regular profiles with 'your choice' of black w / black shaft. Please note in no way is this paddle going to take the place of the Signature or Carbon Carbon paddles ..... rather it is creating it's own niche.

The Stoutness of a Series 1 or 2, built modern like the RRs = ONNO Allglass

Please feel free to call or write with any specific questions you might have on this or any of our other paddles.... happy to discuss. As always, no pressure ever .... here to help.

Thank you again for your time and consideration.

ALLGLASS

ALLGLASS Weight Examples
MID TOUR 25-29 oz
FULL TOUR 26-31 oz
WWWSURF 29 oz (200 cm)

Please note these weights are the approximate averages for various layup levels, ferule lengths and humans .... one piece and two.

CARBON SIGNATURE

SIGNATURE Weight Examples
MID TOUR 20-25.5 oz
FULL TOUR 21-26.5 oz
WWWSURF 26 oz (200 cm)

Please note these weights are the approximate averages for various layup levels, ferule lengths and humans .... one piece and two.

O.K., I'm taking a deep breath here.
When people ask me what I recommend for the layup, I never hesitate. CARBON SIGNATURE. This is my favorite because.

I have tried a almost every paddle on the market and I can honestly say that my CARBON SIGNATURE is the best performing paddle you can buy. at any price. Want to spend more? See 100% carbon.

Wow, that really sounds bad in print. It's mostly my customers telling me that as soon as they sell their__________ they are going to purchase another ONNO.

O.K. why?

My paddles DO NOT flutter. Some paddles will not flutter in a given range but get out of that range and they start to wobble. ONNO paddles will not flutter, high or low angle style. "It feels like it grew out of my body." Without quoting any more customers, I will say that my paddles have a very smooth entry and release....this must be writer's block because I don't like the way this is sounding. Too much. The genesis is, there is a difference, thank you.

The high end....CARBON / CARBON
100% carbon cloth, blades and shaft. You probably already know a lot about this wonderful material. Yes it does cost a lot more. In my opinion, it is actually easier to work with than fiberglass.

Blades and shaft are stiffer but not overly so. This translates to arguably (for some) a more efficient transfer of your energy via the paddle to the water. I love this material. It allows me to build these paddles incredibly light and strong.

When you pay a little more for less for the CARBON/CARBON paddle you DO get a few more things. Not least of which is a bit lighter weight. The paddle blades receive a bit more handwork to pretty them up. This has nothing to due with performance and if you had a SIGNATURE you might not even notice at first but it's there and is just more proof to show I care..... or maybe I feel guilty...I go back and forth on that one. Though when I 'finish' one of these I always feel like it was the best one I ever made.

The Shaft:
Part of the expense with the CARBON / CARBON and the SIGNATURE series is the hand labor involved building these shafts. These have a smooth, hand wet sanded finish which is nice and soft when dry and provides the ideal amount of grip when wet. They have slightly smaller diameter (more relaxing), and a very subtle index rib that just disappears after serving it's purpose. You will love this.

FINALLY ! : )

Adjustable length shafts.

All of our Signature and Carbon / Carbon two piece paddles now come with your choice of a 5, 10, or 15 cm extendable range and infinite feather angle adjustment via a nice, clean, no maintenence, nothing to lose, internal locker thing.
We are so excited to be able to offer this as it now makes our wonderful paddles even more versatile.

So now just think of the the shortest length you might use and add the range of adjustment you would like. We can start at any number so you are not limited to the common "0" or "5" #s as a starting / end point. 199 - 214, 222 - 232, 217 - 222  ???  No worries.

*  Wing paddle users can now go with a more specific and usable 212 + 5 = 217 paddle for example. No need to swing that extra 5cm of weight commonly found on other adjustable length ( 210 - 220 / 215 - 225 ) wings you will never use. A good case FOR a 10 cm range is if you paddle different boats or use the paddle for adventure racing where other ( size and shape ) people might have to grab it.

* The 5cm is nice as a minimalistic range to fine tune your stroke, use for similar boats or to slightly change for different conditions or distances.  I will usually mention this for the wings and race boats.

* The 10cm is the work horse of the three. Generally enough range to interchange between various users, give one a feel for what would be the practical extremes in range for a given proper size to boat ...... This length would also usually be enough for a high angle touring single application paddle to still cross over for use in a tandem. Tandem users can also vary and hone paddle syncronicity with even more sensitivity by ever so slightly varying length.

* The 15cm offers and almost 2 for 1 personality.

* Fishermen and women who are often in a wider SOT can now have the proverbial cake with the 15cm range. Now, instead of going with a compromise length, one can go use the correct the shorter length for point A to B paddling efficiency, then bump the paddle out for drift control, long slow less provoking lower angle slow motion strokes, or for scraping along in skinny water.

* The 15cm works great to use ones 'regular' paddle for surf and rock garden use. Use @ everyday length to get there, then bump it down for wave play, back out to get home. Having all that ferule inside the shaft right where a leash might go doesn't hurt either. Please inform your paddle builder of your intended use ..... a little extra material in the right places goes a long way. Thank you.

Please note, also no worries if you want a single length, two piece paddle too. We can do it with the locker for variable feather control or keep it like the 'old days' with a simple stainless steel spring button and single hole drilled. As a minimum, we strongly suggest the locker over the spring button as it is stronger and wider ranging with very little weight penality.

The shafts are made to our specs with pre-preg, carbon ( fiberglass in the Allglass level soon ) and still have the subtle index rib, the nice, smooth, wetsanded surface that offers the perfect blend of softness and feel when dry with just the right amount of grip when wet sensitivity that has made our paddles the most human friendly in the industry. As we have said before ..... you will LOVE this.

While it would be easy now to just toss out a range and know you will be covered, please know we still like to go over everything on the phone with you to pull out and apply all the subtle nuances to sizing that might not be know (to either one of us : ) 'till we connect on via voice to ear.

On to say, we are really psyched to have these for you.

I have always offered a shaft that is a tiny bit SMALLER in diameter than my standard shaft AND an 'OVERSIZE' shaft for folks with giant hands.
I usually bring this up upon hearing your height.

For some thoughts on Ergo or Bent Shafts please click here.

CARBON Weight Examples
MID TOUR 18-23.5 oz
FULL TOUR 19-24.5 oz
WWWSURF 23 oz (200 cm)

Please note these weights are the approximate averages for various layup levels, ferule lengths and humans .... one piece and two.

These weights are averages INCLUDING DRIP RINGS which weight one ounce. If you send me a picture and it matches your voice I can build these litgiously light. If you are big and strong you can handle an extra couple ounces.

COMMENTS.. I will not attempt to argue with the naysayers in this format as I cannot hear nor look them in the eye. There are a lot of 'experts' out there who's portfolio is a nickel's worth of knowledge.

FIT / SIZING;
Being human we can adapt to almost anything or at least force it. Your paddle size/shape cannot be confined within the walls of some generic chart. Before you call think about what you are using now, it's size (blade) and length. Will you use it for your current boat only? What is your current boat? Are you experiencing any problems? I think you get the point. A chart cannot interpolate all nuances that should d be factored in. Just call and I will discuss every last detail with alacrity. I want you to feel satisfied that you have exactly the 'correct' paddle.

Unless you order an off the shelf paddle, your paddle will be made specifically for you. All paddles are made by hand, by one person. Thank you.

ONNO PADDLES are very strong but accidents happen. So, If you get tossed over the falls, auger in, or just have 'something happen'. Don't worry, I will take care of your paddle. I'm in this to help you have a better time with your life. If you order a paddle and it doesn't make your life more enjoyable (within the paddling realm) send it back for a full refund. That's it.

WHAT I ASK:
I am a young guy with a beautiful wife and newborn son. I have been developing these paddles for over 11 years while nurturing our relationship for about the same. I have, what I firmly believe, is an exceptional paddle. Priced fairly, which I stand behind 100%.

Though you may have never heard of ONNO paddles, I hereby invite you to give one a try.

Thank you.

ONTO REALITY,
Money doesn't need to talk, it goes without saying. Which is what I wish I could do when it comes to this subject. The Paddles speak for themselves but not for me. The prices are based on the three different construction levels. Touring, whitewater, or race profiles all cost the same. Prices reflect carbon costs almost quadrupling over the last year as it becomes more scarce .....

  One Piece Two Piece
ALLGLASS 175.00 225.00
CARBON SIGNATURE 225.00 265.00
CARBON/CARBON 325.00 365.00

WINGS One Piece Two Piece
ALL CARBON 349.00 399.00

Wing note, every time I finish one of these I say to myself, "you gotta start chargin' more for these." These blades really ARE more labor intensive.

Effective as of March 18th 2003.
Well I've done it. I have heard from people who have told me if things get too busy for me to handle I should raise my prices. Sounds easy....... but I 'm not into it at all. Should I weed out or "punish" those folks who really would like to own one of my paddles at my fair prices in favor of only the ones who would pay more?
I figure I will have to do it across the board soon enough as fossil fuels become more 'busy'.
For now I like things the way they are and I hope you do too.

Following the exception to every rule theorem I am going to do something I have been threatening to do for a long time on one particular item. Raise my wing prices.
I love building my regular paddles but the wing paddles challenge me everytime I build a set. In order to squeeze every last gram of extra weight out of these things and keep them the TRUE lightest, best performing wing paddles on the market I have to do several labor intensive steps. Each of these takes time and effort and I will not have it any other way....why should I "forget" all the good techniques I know I can do just to keep the cost down. Material cost is irrelevent here and I am no longer offering the wing paddles in fiberglass...performance vs. cost just isn't there.

Please note what you are getting here is several hours of fully focused, intensive, hands on work over a couple of days by a person who has willingly spent the last   24 + years of his life working with composites to get to your paddle. If I was going by boutique markets these paddles would be somewhere around 1000.00.
What I am getting at is I am finally going to ask for a raise on these paddles.

With the launch of my all new Touring wings and Race Wings I will now be humbly asking
350.00 for the one piece and 375.00 for a two piece which also requires more work than the regular 2 piece paddles to convert.

Each of these special paddles will be built custom to your required specifications and intended use along with factoring in your personal preferences and expectations.

Full descriptions of each model soon to come.
Please note these prices supersede all currently published prices.

WEIGHT Example:
WINGS CARBON 19 - 26 oz
CANOE: CARBON 10 - 18 oz

CARBON P-FLEX CANOE : 200.00

These are my idea of fair prices though I find myself in a quandary and in need of professional advice. Are my paddles perceived as less than top quality because they cost less? Should I jack my prices and suppress my conscience? Or should I shut up and get on with it? Let me know.

NO DEALS. THIS IS MY LIFE.
Please humor me. Yes you can buy a plastic paddle for 40.00 or less. But. What if you could travel farther with less effort or paddle for even an extra 15 minutes just because your paddle boosted your efforts? What is that time worth to you? How about in your profession? The extra expense is made up fast.
Real world #s:        1stroke = L-R-L
40oz plastic 25oz ONNO Signature = 15oz x 20 strokes per minute = 300oz x 60 min. = 18,000oz
That's 1125 pounds per hour you are swinging around needlessly. Hey, you just filled 22, fifty pound bags of sand with your hands on your leisure time. Or 1500 cokes.

O.K. That's it for now. I will be doing some soft goods in the near future, and a newsletter if I can make the time. I welcome and truly appreciate your comments, input..and advice. Thanks a lot.
