Former 49er Head Coach

Porter named football head coach at Channel Islands

As someone from the inside of the Channel Islands High football program for the past seven years, Gary Porter has keen insight for its future.

With a goal in mind of turning Channel Islands into a championship team, the 45-year-old Porter was hired as the program’s head coach, announced athletic director Manny Lara on Monday.

“I would like to see it return to some of its past successes,” said Porter, a 1981 Channel Islands graduate.

Porter, who is working on his teaching credential, will be a walk-on coach. To handle the football program’s administrative duties, former Rio Mesa assistant Tom Voshell has been hired for the staff, Lara said.

Channel Islands won six league championships from 1976 to 1988 and was a section runner-up in 1987. The program has not reached the playoffs since 2004, but was one win away from qualifying last fall.

“The kids learned to work last year,” said Porter. “They know it will take more work to get to that next level. We need to find a way to be competitive in our own league.”

Channel Islands was 3-7 last fall and placed fourth in the Pacific View League.

No wholesale changes are planned in an offense that averaged 189.8 yards passing per game, although the number of attempts could reduce by upgrading the running game.

“We will continue to run a pro-style offense,” said Porter. “We won’t go away from the spread.”

Porter will continue to serve as the program’s defensive coordinator, a position he held for the past four years under Kernon Machado.

Strong ties to the school and the Channel Islands community were key reasons why Porter was promoted to the position over a field of more than 10 candidates, said Lara.

“Gary and Tom are from the community and can relate to our kids,” said Lara.

“When I talked to the kids after we hired Gary, they were all enthused. Gary is a good communicator with them.”

Porter and his wife, Beverly, are the parents of Gary, Brittany and Nicolas. Gary and Nicolas were all-Pacific View League athletes at Channel Islands.

Yoshell, a 1993 St. Bonaventure graduate, was a varsity assistant for a Santa Fe Christian team that went 45-5 and won three CIF championships. He has taught at a Nike football camp in San Diego since 2004.
