Section 4 Class A - Binghamton Press Coverage

JC 3, Owego 2 Semifinal at Greater Binghamton Sports Complex

BINGHAMTON -- Jeremy West scored the game-winner goal with 2:02 left as second-seeded Johnson City outlasted No. 3 seed Owego 3-2 in a Section 4 Class A boys soccer semifinal contest at the Greater Binghamton Sports Complex on Friday. Johnson City led 2-1 at halftime but Tommy West scored his second goal for Owego with about 16 minutes remaining in the second half to tie the score. That set the stage for the winning goal by Jeremy West. Hans Purtell also had a goal and two assists and Kyle Kocan added a goal for the Wildcats, who were outshot 13-8, who will be in their third consecutive sectional final. Ryan Baileys made eight saves for Johnson City (11-3), while Taylor Brown had four saves for Owego (7-5). "We lost the lead twice but kept coming back," Johnson City coach Hristos Dimitriou said. "We're very happy with the win and happy to go back to the sectional final." The Wildcats will take on top-seeded Maine-Endwell (10-2) in the Class A final next Saturday at the Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta at a time to be determined.

Indians Edge Corning 2-1

The OFA Boys Varsity team got back on the winning track this afternoon defeating Corning 2-1 .   The first half of today’s match was very evenly played as both teams came out using a high paced, accurate passing attack.   Corning jumped i nto the lead in the 8th minute off a quickly played free kick from 30 yards.   The Indians responded 5 minutes later when Christian Steidle’s feed found Tyler Stickler loose on the front line.   Tyler shed his defender with a sharp cut and drilled the ball into the back on the net to even the score.  The game went to halftime knotted up at 1-1.  OFA quickly surged into the lead in the 48th minute of the second half when Nick Riegel sent a thru ball to Tyler Stickler.  Tyler finished with a low, hard drive off his left foot to put OFA into the lead.  The Indians did a great job holding onto their lead as the midfielders (Adam Blackwell, Aaron Francis, Nick Reigel, Nate Skiff, Christian Steidle, and Tommy West) remained a half-step quicker to the ball and were able to control play during critical minutes leading to the final horn.   Led by Brendan Bloodnick, OFA's defense (including Nick Finnessey, Derek Brace, Mick Steidle, and Ryan Wilson) showed very good teamwork to quickly responded to Corning advances.   OFA’s season record improves to 8-5-0.    The past three games against larger AA schools should help prepare the Indians for the upcoming Section 4 Playoffs.   OFA will travel to Johnson City for a Class A Sectional game against the Wildcats on Wednesday 10/26.  Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30pm at the Dome on Airport Rd.

Indians Defeated by Horseheads 0-2

The OFA Boys Varsity team hosted the Horseheads Blue Raiders in a non-league game this afternoon in preparation for the Sectional playoffs upcoming next week.   The first half was evenly played with most of the action remaining in the middle third of the field.   The teams seemed well matched as neither was able to create sustained momentum.  The Raiders were, however, able to cash in on two of their opportunities and went into halftime with a 2 goal lead.   The second half saw the momentum swing to OFA’s advantage.  The Indians midfield and front line kept pressure on the Raiders defense and created numerous high quality scoring opportunities.  Although they had great chances, OFA never was able to find the back of the net and the match ended 0-2.   Today’s halftime included a Senior Recognition ceremony honor Owego's 11 seniors.  OFA’s season record is now 7-5-0.   OFA’s next match will be Monday 10/24 when the Indians host Corning.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm.    This will be the final regular season match.  Sectional play begins on Wednesday.

Monday, October 17
Indians Look Sharp In 3-1 Victory Over Elmira

The OFA Boys Varsity team notched its third consecutive victory this afternoon defeating Elmira Express 3-1 .   The Indians looked sharp and moved the ball quickly and accurately throughout much of today's match.  Using short quick passes OFA’s midfield was able to control the center of the field and apply pressure to the Elmira defense.  The first goal of today’s contest came in the 12th minute when Aaron Francis captured a ball deep in Indian territory, made a long run down the right side slicing through several opponents, drove into the box and finished strongly to put the Indians into the lead.    Tyler Stickler scored Owego's other two goals today – both coming with 5:00 minutes remaining in each half.   Assisting Tyler’s goals were Christian Steidle and Josh Wilkert.   Defensively the Indians did a great job keeping their shape and routinely chose the right moments to double up on Elmira’s front line players.    Ryan Wilson played especially strong as he was able to quickly shut down Elmira runs and create counterattacking opportunities down the left side of the field.   Elmira’s only goal came late in the match after the outcome was no longer in doubt.   OFA’s season record improves to 7-4-0.   OFA’s next match will be Thursday 10/20 when the Indians host Horseheads.  Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00pm.   There will be a Senior Recognition ceremony at halftime to honor all our senior Indians players (and their families).

Friday, October 14
Indians Roll Past Norwich 8-0

The OFA Boys Varsity team travelled to Norwich this afternoon to take on the Purple Tornado.   The outcome of today’s match was never in doubt as the Indians were able to control the ball and routinely found spaces in the Norwich defense.  Mike Steidle started the scoring in the 15th minute when he sent a driving shot into the upper netting from 30 yards.  The Indians kept the momentum throughout the match – scoring 4 goals in each half.    Everyone got into the action as Mike Steidle, Steven Yanchus, Christian Steidle, Nick Riegel (2), Josh Wilkert, Derek Brace, and Nick Finnessey all tallied goals.   Providing assists were Aaron Francis, Mike Steidle (2), David Dempski, and Adam Blackwell.  In goal, Taylor Brown logged his third shutout of the season.  OFA’s season record improves to 6-4-0.    This evening’s game was the final game of league play.   In preparation for the upcoming Sectional playoffs, two games have been added to next week’s schedule.   The Indians will travel to Elmira for a 4:30pm match on Monday and then host Horseheads on Thursday.

Indians Shut Out Windsor 2-0

The OFA Boys Varsity team was on the road again this afternoon, playing back-to-back games to make up for early season cancellations.   Today’s opponent was the Black Knights of Windsor.  The Indians used a controlled short passing game to keep Windsor on the defensive throughout the first half, but the Black Knights defense withstood the first 40 minutes and the game went to halftime without any scoring.  Owego had the better of possession again in the second half and finally scored in the 57th minute when Adam Blackwell put a long pass onto the foot of Tyler Stickler  who, after two quick touches, buried his shot into the netting to put the Indians into the lead.  In the 75th minute Steven Yanchus headed in a cross from Mike Steidle to give the Indians a 2-0 lead that held until the clock expired. OFA’s defense was very sharp today and was quick to respond to all Black Knight advances.   In goal, Taylor Brown logged OFA’s second shutout of the season.  The Indians' record is now 5-4-0 in the STAC Central Division.   The boys get a short break as they have no games scheduled until Thursday Oct 13th at 7:00pm when they host the STAC Central Division leading JC Wildcats.   This upcoming game will also be senior recognition night to honor all our senior Indian players (and their families).

Indians Fall Short In High Scoring Contest At SV

The OFA Boys Varsity team travelled Susquehanna Valley this afternoon for a rematch of this season’s first game.   Playing with quickness and desire, the Indians dominated the entire first half.  Steven Yanchus scored OFA’s first goal off a free kick from Mike Steidle in the 23rd minute.  After the first goal OFA continued to apply pressure on the Sabers defense and created numerous scoring opportunities.  Unfortunately the first 40 minutes resulted in just one goal, plus a strike on the post, a strike off the crossbar, and a ball in the back of the net 1 second after the halftime horn.  As a result, the Indians entered halftime with a precarious 1 goal advantage.  Immediately after halftime, OFA scored again when Tyler Stickler received a pass from Christian Steidle and beat the keeper in the first minute after the restart.   After Owego's second goal the Sabers raised their level of play and started to find more free space.  OFA would score one more goal in the second half on another Christian Steidle to Tyler Stickler combination, but the Sabers took advantage of their opportunities and tallied four second half goals to hand the Indians a 3-4 defeat.   The Indians record is now 4-4-0 in the STAC Central Division.  OFA travels to Windsor on Friday Oct 7th.  Kickoff will be 4:30pm.  This should be a very competitive match as Windsor knocked off SV 1-0 earlier this week.

David Dempski Scores Versus Norwich

Monday, October 3

The OFA Boys Varsity got off to a quick start in today’s contest against the Purple Tornado of Norwich.  Just 24 seconds into the match Adam Blackwell’s crossing pass found Tyler Stickler open in the box.  Tyler promptly placed the ball into the back netting for a lead that the Indians would never relinquish.    The Indians midfield and front line were able to find open spaces as OFA controlled the ball for the majority of the match.  Brandon Pauly added another first half goal in the 35th minute to give the Indians a 2-0 advantage at halftime.  The second half saw two goals scored by Aaron Francis (assisted by Mike Steidle and Tyler Stickler) and one goal by David Dempski (assisted by Ryan Wilson).   The Indians next game will be Thursday Oct 6 when they travel to Susquehanna Valley for a 4:30pm kickoff at the SV Middle School.  OFA will be looking to make atones for its first match of the season when the boys dropped a 1-3 decision to the Sabers.   The Indians record is now 4-3-0 in the STAC Central Division.

Johnson City 2, Owego 1 - Binghamton Press Coverage

Johnson City soccer improved to 6-2, edging out Owego in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference match on Saturday.  JC took the lead in the first half, on two goals from Hans Purtell, and held it for the final.

Sunday, October 2
Indians Edged by Wildcats 1-2

The OFA Boys Varsity team travelled to the Greater Binghamton Sports Complex to challenge the Johnson City Wildcats.  For the first 15 minutes of today’s match the Indians seemed a step slower than the Wildcats as OFA tried to adjust to playing on an indoor surface.  JC took advantage of their quicker start to score the game’s first goal and put OFA in an early disadvantage, but the Indians adjusted to the pace of the play and applied plenty of pressure for the remainder of the game.  OFA tied the match in the 33rd minute when Tyler Stickler found a loose ball off a scramble in front of the net and placed it in the back netting.  For the next seven minutes the Indians created several quality chances in the Wildcats defensive end, but JC capitalized on a mini-break and scored the game’s last goal with only 30 seconds remaining in the first half.   During the second half the OFA defense (led by Mike Steidle, Nick Finnessey, Brendan Bloodnick, Ryan Wilson, and Aaron Francis) responded to every Wildcat advance, but the Indians couldn’t tally another goal and the game ended with JC ahead 1-2.  The Indians get a day to rest and then have another busy week as they have three matches this coming week.  OFA will need victories in each match in order to challenge for the division title.   The Indians record is now 3-3-0 in the STAC Central Division.

Saturday, October 1
OFA Indians Fall To Oneonta 1-3

The OFA Boys Varsity team hosted the very talented Oneonta Yellow Jackets, another undefeated opponent, on The Island this afternoon.  The first half was very evenly matched with both squads creating several quality scoring opportunities.  The Indians scored the game’s first goal in the 5th minute when Aaron Francis captured a ball rebounded off the cross-bar near the left post.  After one quick move to shed a defender, Aaron but the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.  Throughout the first half both teams were able to move the ball with sharp passing through the middle of the field to create counter-attacks off defensive stops.    Oneonta tied the match with 17:14 remaining in the first half off a well struck free-kick.   The game went to halftime with the score tied 1-1.  The second half started out similarly to the first half with both teams playing very intense, evenly matched soccer.   The Yellow Jackets surged into the lead in the 52nd minute when they scored off a short corner.  After that score Oneonta grabbed the momentum and kept the pressure on OFA’s defense for the next 10 minutes.  During that span, Oneonta tallied another goal on a corner kick to put the Indians in a 1-3 deficit.     The Indians eventually settled themselves and again created scoring chances, but were never able to find the net. The game ended 1-3.    There is no rest is in sight for the Indians, as they will travel to Johnson City tomorrow.   Due to flood damage in JC, Saturday’s game will be played at the Dome on Airport Road.   Kickoff is set for 4:30pm.  The Indians record is now 3-2-0 in the STAC Central Division.

Tommy West Scores For OFA

6-2 Victory Over Seton Catholic

The Saints of Seton Catholic entered this afternoon’s match on The Island with an unblemished record in the STAC East Division and had aspirations of continuing that streak, but OFA would prove to be the more determined team.  The Indians played with great intensity throughout today's contest.  OFA’s midfield comprised of Tom West, Christian Steidle, Nick Reigel, Aaron Francis, Josh Wilkert, Adam Blackwell, and Nate Skiff controlled the center of the field and continually flashed to every loose ball.  Owego's front line of Tyler Stickler, Brandon PaulySteven Yanchus and David Dempski routinely put SCC’s defense in jeopardy, consistently finding open spaces betwen and behind the Saints defenders.   The first goal of today’s match was scored by Brendan Bloodnick  in the 8th minute.  On the play Tyler Stickler received a short corner, dribbled the baseline and found Brendan streaking down the middle.  Brendan drilled the ball into the back of the net from six yards out.  SCC would tie the match 15 minutes later, but the Indians responded tallying two more first half goals to take a 3-1 halftime lead.  The second half would see three more goals for the Indians, who came away with a well-deserved 6-2 victory. OFA’s other goals were scored by Tom West, Aaron Francis, Tyler Stickler, Steven Yanchus, and Nate Skiff.  Assists were logged by Nick Reigel, Adam Blackwell, Tom West, and Tyler Stickler (2).    Coach Luke routinely substituted players throughout the contest in an attempt to keep everyone fresh for the upcoming matches on Friday and Saturday.    The Indians will have no opportunity to relax after today's victory, as they will face a second undefeated opponent tomorrow when they take on Oneonta.  Kickoff is set for 5:00pm on The Island at OFA.  Immediately following that match, the OFA Girls varsity team will be playing at 7:00pm.     The Indians record is now 3-1-0 in the STAC Central Division.

Sparked by the brilliant effort of goalkeeper Taylor Brown, who deflected a PK attempt over the crossbar in the 8th minute of today's contest, the OFA Indians went on to a 5-0 road victory over Chenango Valley this afternoon.  Tyler Stickler gave the Indians all the scoring punch they would need, as he collected 3 goals over an eight minute span late in the first half to give OFA a 3-0 halftime advantage.   Providing assists for Tyler’s goals were Brandon Pauly, Adam Blackwell, and Christian Steidle.   Thereafter the Owego defense, led by Brendan Bloodnick, Mike Steidle, Nick Finnessey, Ryan Wilson, Derek Brace and Josh Wilkert, took control of the contest.  OFA’s defensive pressure kept the game in the Warriors' defensive half of the field throughout the second half.  Second half goals for Owego were scored by Steven Yanchus (assisted by Nick Reigel) and Nick Reigel (assisted by Mike Steidle).  This coming week features three more important games against STAC-East opponents.   OFA’s next game will be played on Tuesday September 27th, when the boys travel to Windsor High School.  Kickoff is set for 4:30pm.  The Indians record is now 2-1-0 on the 2011 season.

Indians Cruise Past Chenango Forks 5-1

The OFA Indians stormed out of the gates early in today's contest at Chenango Forks in their first match since Sept 2nd.   Playing on the Blue Devils' turf field, the midfield and front line were able to find gaps in the CF defense and create many scoring opportunities.  OFA’s first goal came in the 10th minute when Brandon Pauly’s thru-ball found Tyler Stickler in stride as he made a run through the center of the Blue Devils back line.  Tyler’s driving shot deflected off the keeper's hands and into the goal to put the Indians in the lead.  Three minutes later Tyler Stickler again broke through the defense on a long throw in from Nick Riegel to give OFA a 2-0 lead.  The Blue Devils tried to rally when they caught Owego's defense off guard and scored in the 15th minute, but the Indians responded quickly by retaking a two-goal lead 40 seconds later when Adam Blackwell converted a PK.  The fourth OFA tally was scored off a Tom West thru-ball to a streaking Steven Yanchus.  The fifth and final OFA goal came with 2 seconds remaining in the first half when Brandon Pauly scored off a long pass from Tyler Stickler to give the Indians a commanding 5-1 halftime lead.   The second half advantage went to the Indians, but didn’t have a good flow or result in any goals.  The Indians record improves to  1-1-0 on the season and in the STAC Central Division.    OFA’s next game will be played on Thursday September 22nd, when the boys travel to Chenango Valley.  Kickoff is set for 4:30pm.

UPDATE ON THE SEASON

We hope that everyone is safe and those affected by the recent flooding have been able to begin recovering from this horrific tragedy. If anyone needs anything from our soccer family please do not hesitate to ask.  There have been rumors that the fall season may be cancelled. This is false. A lthough many of our fields have seen extensive damage, we are working on plan to get the players back on the field as soon as possible. The head coaches of each sport met with Andrew Goodrich this week and it was decided that OFA Soccer will restart the fall season on Monday, September 19th. Where the team will practice and play is yet to be determined. The District is testing the fields for any possible toxins from the flooding and assuming that the tests come back negative, the team can practice at school. If the test comes back positive, there will be alternative locations available. We look forward to seeing everyone very soon.

Indians Drop Season Opener

The OFA Indians got a quick start in this evening's 2011 season opening contest, scoring the initial goal versus the visiting SV Sabres in the 6th minute.   On the play Mike Steidle delivered a crisp through pass to Nick Riegel, who gathered the pass in full stride on the left side and finished cleanly with the outside of his right foot.  Riegel's goal gave the Indians a 1-0 lead that held through the first half.  SV responded by scoring on their first three shots after halftime, notching the tying goal in the 41st minute and two more before the mid-point of the second half to complete the scoring.  The final score was SV 3 - OFA 1.  OFA will have opportunity to avenge tonight's loss when the teams meet for a rematch in Conklin in October.  The Indians start the season with a 0-1-0 record in the STAC Central Division.    OFA’s next game will be played on Thursday September 8, when the boys host Norwich on The Island at 4:30pm.

Indians Continue To Ramp Up Their Game In Scrimmage At Horseheads

The OFA Indians traveled to Horseheads this morning for their final scrimmage before the start of the 2011 season.  In a highly competitive competition, both teams acquitted themselves well and built some confidence in their potential for success in the season ahead.  Horseheads opened with a whirlwind, taking the opening kickoff, making two passes that shedded the OFA defense, and burying a low driving shot into the goal just 11.94 seconds after the opening whistle.   The speed and defensive pressure of Horseheads kept Owego scrambling early, but OFA was able to gather its composure and, in the 12th minute, scored an equalizing goal of its own on a Brandon Pauly rebound goal off a Tyler Stickler shot that the Horseheads keeper had blocked away.  An OFA defensive breakdown in the 35th minute allowed a second Horseheads goal, but Owego responded a few minutes later with a second goal of its own, this one by Christian Steidle off a corner kick from Tyler Stickler. There were no goals scored by either team in the competitive second half, despite improved scoring opportunities for Owego after halftime.  The pre-season showed the Indians that, while there is always room to grow and improve, they have the potential to be a competitive force in the STAC Central Division this season.  Regular season league play begins this Friday when the Indians host Division rival Susquehanna Valley on The Island at OFA.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm

» Outlook: The Indians should be competitive behind a pretty good group of returners and an infusion of talent from the Central Division junior varsity championship team, chief among them junior midfielder Nick Riegel. Three of four starters return on defense, including Brendan Bloodnick and Sam Warner. Taylor Brown, a senior, will be the starting goalie and Luke is very high on him.

OFA Varsity Boys Take Another Step Forward In Scrimmage At Elmira

image_name2
Nate Skiff Scores Versus Elmira

The OFA Indians enjoyed far different experience in their scrimmage this morning at Elmira than they did in the contest that ended Owego's playoff run in 2010.  OFA looked sharp and moved the ball quickly and accurately throughout much of today's series of mini-scrimmages.  Senior Tyler Stickler tallied two goals in the first session.  The first came 10:00 minutes into the period when he gathered and easily finished a rebound of a driving shot off the crossbar by Sophomore Christian Steidle from 25 yards.  Tyler's second tally came 5 minutes later off an assist from Freshman Adam Blackwell.   Owego scored again in the fourth mini-period when Senior Nate Skiff captured a loose ball off of a deflection, shed a defender with his first touch, and drove the ball into the side netting.  The Indians defense was alert throughout today’s matches and again did not allow a goal.  Mike Steidle, Brendan Bloodnick, Ryan Wilson, Sam Warner, and Aaron Francis did a great job controlling the defensive third.  In goal Taylor Brown looked very confident and consistently made good decisions.  Overall a very encouraging effort was put forth by the Indians.    The boys will have their last pre-season tune-up when they travel to Horseheads on Tuesday (10:00am start with an 8:00am bus from OFA).

OFA Varsity Boys Enjoy Their First Competitive Opportunity of 2011

The Indians enjoyed a scrimmage session today at Newark Valley High School, taking on both the NV Cardinals and Dryden Lions.  After two weeks of daily practices the boys were ready to show off their skills and give the fans a glimpse of what to expect this upcoming season.   At many times during this afternoon's mini-matches, OFA looked sharp and moved the ball quickly and well.  Tyler Stickler tallied the first of OFA's several goals early on, when he finished a well placed crossing pass from Christian  Steidle. The Indians did not allow a goal the entire afternoon.  Today's scrimmage allowed Coach Luke to see many different line-ups, with many players seeing action at several different positions.  The boys should be well tested in the upcoming scrimmages at Elmira on Saturday and at Horseheads on Tuesday against traditionally strong teams from two of the largest school districts in Section IV.

OFA To Compete In Post-Season As Smallest Class A Soccer School In New York State

While the official start of the 2011 pre-season has not quite yet arrived, there is already a little bit of interesting news to share about post-season play in 2011. The Corning and Elmira school districts will fielding just one men's soccer team each this year, leaving Maine-Endwell, Johnson City and Owego Free Academy as the only men's soccer teams competing in Class A in the Section Four Championship tournament that will follow the 2011 regular season and STAC playoffs.  Based upon enrollment numbers, OFA will actually be the single smallest school competing at the Class A level in all of New York State, which should present an exciting opportunity for the Owego boys to test themselves against top level competition from the big schools before the season is over.  In the meantime, there is a whole season of soccer ahead for the OFA team, which is certainly looking forward to the fun and the challenges.  As soon as the full regular season schedule is available, it will be posted on this site.

STAC Announces Division Realignment For The 2011 Season

The Southern Tier Athletic Conference has announced a new realignment of Divisions for the 2011 boys' soccer season.  Owego Free Academy will remain in the Central Division with Johnson City, Norwich and Susquehanna Valley.  Windsor and Seton Catholic Central will remain partnered in the East Division with Oneonta, Chenango Valley and Chenango Forks.  Binghamton, Maine-Endwell, Union-Endicott and Vestal will comprise the Metro Division and Corning, Elmira, Ithaca and Horseheads will compete in the West Division.  During the 2011 regular season, the OFA Indians will face each Central Division team twice and each East Division team once, along with three non-conference opponents.  The official schedule will be announced sometime in the next few weeks.

OFA Boys Soccer - An Incredible Decade of Success

Although disappointed by their loss in the Section IV semifinal match on Friday, the OFA boys soccer team has much of which to be proud.  2010 was the tenth consecutive season that the varsity team won ten or more matches, a remarkable accomplishment.  Over these ten years, the OFA boys varsity team has a combined record of 151 wins, 11 ties and just 40 losses.  This achievement is an outstanding tribute to the OFA coaching staff and athletic department, the entire Owego soccer community and, most especially, the dozens of players who have worn the Indians jersey over these years.

This year's senior class, like those before them, achieved an incredible record of success in their six years as part of the OFA soccer program.  Congratulations to Tad Roosa, Taylor Beauvais, Patrick Knaul, Camden Bushen, Scott Johnson, Ben Damico, Austin Kahabka, and Tim Gilli as they graduate next June and move on from OFA.  They will always be a part of the great Owego soccer tradition.

With several strong players returning to the team from this year's varsity and the 2010 successes of the OFA Junior Varsity (11-2-0) and Modified (11-0-1) teams, there is every reason to look forward to the continued success of Owego soccer in 2011 and beyond.

HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A CHAMPION?

Have you ever seen a champion?
I saw one today.
He wears RED and WHITE and BLUE
and he plays for OFA.

This champion plays with heart,
This champion plays with soul.
He'd never dream of giving up,
winning is his goal.

He leaves his heart out on the field,
a warrior til the end.
He respects his teammates and opponents,
to him everyone is a friend.

One day he'll look back
and think of days of old,
fondly remembering when
Owego won the GOLD.

Have you ever seen a champion?
I saw one today,
He wears RED and WHITE and BLUE
and he plays for OFA.
