Age: 18
Melissa started at OSSG in July of 2000. She had competed at Warwick Dance & Gymnastics before making the switch. As a Level 8 gymnast, Melissa helped to strengthen OSSG's upper competing levels and she was one of the leaders in the gym. Her strengths are Bars, Floor and Vault, and she constantly practices fulls and suks in hopes of continuing to advance.
Melissa continues to train at the gym, and will compete in the 2004-2005 season for Rhode Island College. In addition, she coaches some of the younger groups of gymnasts at the gym.
2002-2003 HIGHLIGHTS: Injuries shortened Melissa's first year at Level 9. She placed 3rd on Vault, and 2nd on Bars and Floor at Aim High, but competed in only four meets and did not qualify for States. Her meet high was a 30.80, while her event high was a 8.35 on Floor and Vault.
2001-2002 HIGHLIGHTS: Competing at Level 8, Melissa was unbothered by injuries this season and qualified for Regionals with a great effort at States. She placed fourth on Vault at the Lyon Invitational; second on Vault and Bars and third on Floor and All-Around at URI; first on Vault, Bars, Beam, Floor and All-Around at R&R and fourth All-Around at Ocean State. Her high meet was 34.85 at Ocean State, while her high event was 9.35 on Floor at R&R. She scored 34.65 at States and followed that with a 33.60 at Regionals.
2000-2001 HIGHLIGHTS: Although ankle injuries slowed her and prevented her from competing in every event in most meets, Melissa qualified for States in her first meet. She placed fourth on Bars at Ocean State, third on Bars at URI, first on Bars and second on Beam at Aim High, and third on Bars and sixth on Beam at States. Her high event was a 8.9 on Bars and her high meet was a 33.50 at States, where she missed qualifying for Regionals by just .25. She did compete at Regionals in Maine, however, when she filled the slot of another gymnast who was injured. Her 8.64 average on Bars ranked third in the gym.
1999-2000 HIGHLIGHTS: While competing at Level 8 for her previous gym, Melissa took first on Bars, third on Vault, Beam, Floor and All-Around at the Rhode Island Invitational, sixth on Vault at Glastonbury (CT) Invitational, and she placed in Vault and Bars at Crystal Ice. Her high event was a 9.10 on Bars and Vault, and her high meet was a 35.20.
