(KB - 05/04/06) Brittany
Waters is universally accorded status as the most improved
player on any of the Comets teams.
Waters,
a junior, joined the Comets Red team in 2004 after playing a
season or two with her middle school team, the Lee
Gunners. Unprepared for the speed of the Red
team's AAU schedule, Brittany was moved to the Comets Blue team
so she could get more playing time. Coach Dino
George was only too happy to get a 6'1" forward for his
guard oriented team.
Given
a chance to start, Waters quickly showed her
mettle. Most 6'1" female players are
quickly shown their way into the paint and rarely step outside
it. Brittany created her own position with the
Blue team. Tall and gangly, Brittany is
able to pound the boards. But unlike other
players in the post, Brittany also is able to step outside and
drain the three. She also has developed a
dangerous mid-range game.
This
diversity of weaponry inspired the Red team coaches to call
Brittany back to the Red team in 2005. But by that
time Brittany had already established a bond with her Comets
Blue teammates. She decided to stay with the
Blue team in their attempt to create a viable national calibre
team. In addition to talent, she also has character.
So
far in the 2006 AAU season Brittany, has
excelled. She leads the Blue team in
rebounding and is second in scoring. Her footwork in
the low post is excellent. When she gets the
ball in position to score she rarely fails to convert,
either left-handed or right-handed. She
has come a long way from that timid, skinny youngster that
walked into her first Comets practice in 2004.
This
past season Waters led her high school team, Edgewater High, to
the Region 1 championship game and a 27-3
finish. She was an All-Tournament selection in
the 2005-2006 Midnite Basketball tourney, a 2006 third team
All-Orange County selection, and she made the 2005 KSA
All-tournament team at Disney.
Brittany
continues to expand her game. The Blue
team is committed to developing Brittany into a solid D1
player. Brittany adds her own emotional
fire and desire to the mix. Her improvement
over the past three years has been
dramatic. If B-Dub continues to improve
at this rate, she certainly will be a major college prospect.
