(KB
- 07/03/07) Stetson University snatched three of Orlando's Finest this
past weekend when they received verbal commitments from Jessica Bivins,
Christina Carruth and Lyllique Roman. All three girls attended Stetson's
elite camp last Thursday and Friday. After assessing the three and
looking over their own needs, Stetson offered them on the spot. This
brings Stetson's haul of Comets girls to five. Tierra Brown and Brittany
Carannante signed with the Hatters previously. Additionally, Stetson has
standing offers on the table for several other Comets players. Where are
they getting all these scholarships from? While
we expected Lyllique to verbal, Carruth and Bivins were surprises.
Christina opened the 2007 travel season playing for the Comets White
team but moved to the Comets Blue team in April. Coaches Dino George and
Charles Hardy were salivating over to prospect of teaming Big Cat up
with Laquita Curry in the post. At 6'3", Carruth is a big body in
the paint with a soft turnaround jumper. Undoubtedly, Stetson saw the
same potential. They'll bring her in and try to get more shot attempts
per game than she unleashed in high school. And
we are just thrilled to death for Jessica. JB is my daughter on the
side. To me she will always be that thick little girl who befriended
Jordan when they were six. JB was the catalyst for our entry into the
AAU wars (her mom coached the team and allowed Jordan on the team as the
11th player). Both she and Jordan were absolutely terrible when they
were young. But they had fire. They got after the ball. Both
girls have blossomed into being fairly good players (understatement). JB
has the sweetest pull up jumper in the city. She's still a premium
defensive player and may be the steal of the Class of 2008. We're still
miffed that she isn't prowling the hardwood for the Comets Red. Many
times we've sat down to write an article about Lyllique Roman. We
watched her play for the Comets Blue and often wondered why she wasn't
on the court more often. She has silky smooth moves and nice form. When
her jumper is on she's dynamite. She reminds us of Brittany Carannante,
her erstwhile Stetson teammate. Same type of player. But
Lyllique is so quiet and unassuming it's hard to make unasked
observations, you know? We like to allow the players to define
themselves without adding our own fluffly hyperbole to their resumes.
Lyllique never pumps us for information or photos. She never asks for
ink. We don't even think she reads the Comets site. She just shows up
for work every practice, every game. You can tell she loves to play. An
All-Osceola County selection the past two years, Lyllique is moving on
the bigger things with Stetson. Congratulations
to all these girls!!! |
