(KB -
06/19/06) Comets Black forward Chandler
McCabe is 6'3" and still growing. That's
pretty lengthy for a girl. Most coaches would
(and have) immediately pegged Chan as a post player, put her
on the box and waited to see some results. Chan
is not a post player. Chan is a shooting
guard. Always has been. With a
graceful, arcing shot, Chandler has been quietly moving up
the ranks of 2008 players in Florida.
That's
good news. Three years ago, Chan was sequestered
at the end of the Miracle's bench. Her rail thin
frame was deemed to be too frail for the rough and tumble
defense the Miracle liked to play.
What
has changed since that time?
It
seems that Chandler has developed into a defensive
stopper!!!
This
season Chandler leads all the Comets teams in blocked shots,
averaging almost seven per game. In one stretch back in April,
Chandler was averaging 10 blocks per game, mostly against
perimeter players. She likes to bait opponents into
trying to shoot over her, then uses her size and quick
elevation to send their shots backwards.
Where
did this new found defensive prowess come from?
Chan still doesn't like too much body
contact. Her rejections happen in the air.
She swats jumpshots like a volleyball player, not a power
forward. After
getting to high school, it became apparent that Chandler was going to
have to expand her skill set if she wanted to play varsity. Chan spent her
freshman season with Bishop Moore's JV team, not unusual for a freshman
but somewhat unusual for a seasoned AAU player.
Chan used the time to recover completely from a 2003 knee injury.
Once her knee came around, Chan started working on her defense.
She found that she'd grown several inches since her Miracle days.
As a guard, her hand-eye coordination was still good.
She started developing a plan for shutting down
jumpshooters.
It's
worked very well. Most of the players she has to defend are
5'5" to 5'9". Even guards that are
quick enough to beat Chan off the dribble are not immune
to her predatory attacks on their shots. Half of her blocks come from behind. She is long enough
to reach over and block layup attempts without getting tagged
with a foul.
Chandler's
defensive skills have raised a few eyebrows.
Comets Black team coach Nik Nikic believes that Chan will
be the top ranked 2008 guard in Florida before it is all
over with. Her jumper is still
money. He thinks colleges will come flocking
to see a 6'3" (and still growing) guard.
Chan
is now a varsity starter for Bishop Moore as well as a
starter for the Comets Black team. Her shot blocking
prowess has become a staple for both teams. At the UCF
team camp in mid-June, several coaches were overheard
commenting about her defensive skills.
Who'd-a
thunk it?
