VOLUNTEER  ... JOIN HANDS  ... JOIN HEARTS ... JOIN IN !!!
Though our programs are always in need of volunteers, the primary focus is on safety for the kids and all volunteers!
Click on the handout below to pull up a Volunteer Application form - Fill it out and turn it in to your local league along with a photo copy of your government-issued photo i.d. (generally a drivers license).  In Little League, we are required to run and review background and sex offender registry checks before approving volunteers for regular contact with the kids.
Additionally, the leagues run the same checks on a wider volunteer pool - including board members and folks who may be handling finances.  Little League International has a great partnership with ChoicePoint/LexusNexis - a nationwide data base - which means each chartered league or district can run 125 FREE background checks per year, and are then charged only $1 per check above the 125!

Have questions about how to keep kids safer on the Internet? NetSmartz411 is here to help!

NetSmartz411 is a first-of-its-kind, online service provided by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) to answer questions about Internet safety, computers, and the Web. NetSmartz411 is provided at no cost to the public and made possible by a generous donation from the Qwest Foundation.

The general public — especially parents and guardians — can directly access the NetSmartz411 Library to search for answers to their questions, as well as contact NCMEC experts to ask specific questions related to online safety and the Internet.

A major part of Little League's plan for child safety ...
just a game

Every adult (age 16 and up) who has "repeated contact" with and works directly with the kids must complete a Volunteer form toward a background check. If you desire to volunteer toward managing, coaching, umpiring, being on a local League or District board, or in any other way involving yourself directly with the kids, please complete this form and take it (along with a photocopy of a government-issued photo I.D. with you to your local league's registration - or mail it with a copy of your government-issued photo I.D. to the address affiliated with the program. (Addresses are included with the "My Site News" item about each league.)

Some leagues are issuing "I.D." badges indicating the Volunteer Is Approved to be on the fields with the kids because they have completed both the sexual registry and background checks for those volunteers.  Not A Bad Idea at All :-)  In fact, District 9 does so for the District Staff and for those working on the field or in the dugouts with the Challenger Division~

As of the 2007 Season, Little League International is providing chartered Little Leagues 80 Free Background/SOR Checks through ChoicePoint and a unique child-safety focused program.  (Additional checks cost the chartered league $1 each.)

As of the 2009 season, that number jumped from 80 free to 125 free checks, per chartered Little League, then $1 per.  (The company name changed from "ChoicePoint" to "Lexis/Nexis" and still provides our partnership with Litle League in the best national records program available.)

Child Safety:   Be aware!

As of June 2006, there is a website making it easier for Oregonians to track the whereabouts of predatory sex offenders in the Oregon. The first day, the site had 250,000 hits!   Click on the underlined area to access the site direct.  The "Map Offenders" will check a 1-mile radius around the address you enter.

Part of Little League's Safety Program includes the requirement of the league doing a background and Sex Offender Registry check on volunteers who spend time with the children.  People rarely stay in one place, but drive here and there, or relocate without reporting in.  In addition to what the District and the Leagues do, the following links open up an opportunity for community awareness.

To track sex offenders in Oregon:
Call Oregon State Police at (503) 378-3725 ext 4429 to find out about sex offenders living in your zip code.

Portland Police CrimeMapper
If you live in Portland, you can try using the CrimeMapper. While it won't tell you who the offenders are, it will tell you if an assault took place in your neighborhood.
