 HISTORY OF THE PROGRAM

Al Herback has presented Instructional Clinics to Little League® Managers and Coaches across the U.S. and Canada since 1972, including many clinics in Oregon since 1996, and annual presentations in the Eugene area since 2003.  Beginning THIS season, he is bringing a new and unique instruction program for the purpose of helping adults work with children with respect to the game, but also much more!  The clinic and resources are highly beneficial for ANYONE working with youth in baseball and softball, and programs are encouraged to send, not only their signed on or potential volunteer coaches, but all PARENTS and the program’s leadership to participate.   Along with the instructional program at the clinic, there will be manuals and DVDS available for the appropriate age group focus.

While it is recognized that Volunteers are out there doing their best, it is also recognized that they have most likely received little or no specific training for the job.  Volunteers who are learning on the job frequently use past experience or a trial and error approach to get the job done.  Often they are subjected to criticism, and it takes away all the fun for the kids and the volunteers.  This approach to training has been one of the main frustrations of life in youth sports. Additionally, Parents should be well-informed about the program they’ve signed on for!  The “Learning the Game” program for ages 4 thru 6 will be done in six easy-to-follow practices with fun activities and drills focused on skills necessary for the kids to learn the game.  Parental participation is especially key to helping the program work best! In six easy practice plans for ages 7 thru 12 “Teaching for Tomorrow” Baseball & Softball program, he will show you how to teach ten fundamentals, organize each practice, work with players and parents, and how to use the sport as a catalyst for teaching our children to be fine citizens of tomorrow.

This new and unique program will be launched for the first time in 2010.  Instill in your managers, coaches, and parents, the importance of participating, and provide your coaching staff an opportunity to enjoy while learning new skills and ideas to take to the ballfield.  You may attend one or both sessions if you wish.  Bring your glove, wear comfortable clothing, sneakers and let’s have some fun!!!

As this is a brand new and unique teaching format, Al would love your comments or suggestions either at the end of the clinic or by email at a later date.  He is always looking for ways to make it more meaningful and special to coaches and managers.  And because it is a completely new program, there will always be ways to improve.  Come and participate!  We believe you will be very pleasantly surprised by the new format and ideas!

TOP-NOTCH BOARD MEMBER TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES!

Annually, for over 16 years, OREGON has been at the forefront of states across the Western Region in providing training opportunities for "local league" Board Members!  A "Little League Leadership Conference" is held "pre-season" - with the 'host site' being one of several locations across the state, in hopes of promoting high participation by all leagues.   In addition to each of the opportunities listed here, your District Administrator and staff are available to meet and train specific to most positions on your local league board.

Forr 2010, the event is being hosted by District 4 - December 5th and 6th - in the Beaverton area.  Click here for more specific information.

The 2009 event was hosted in Portland (District 1) at the Airport Holiday Inn.

In 2008, Oregon's statewide Little League Leadership Training Conference was held at the Valley River Inn in Eugene - hosted by District 9.  Approximately 150 people from across the state attended, with approximately 23 attending from the District 9 Leagues.  Dan Velte,  Director of League Development from Willamsport, PA attended and instructed a workshop.  Jim Gerstenslager, Western Region Director from San Bernardino, CA participated in the welcoming ceremony and led multiple workshops focused on the positions of the Board of Directors.  The best training possible is offered during these events and can help alleviate 'headaches' and stresses - really be beneficial to leagues moving into their new season!

 District-wide Umpire training opportunities ...

Pre-season:  Gary Taylor, our UIC (District "Umpire In Chief") has set a precident for the leagues - working with each League President to meet with  managers, coaches, and other volunteer umpires

Pre-season events include a review of all rule changes for the current season, reviewing the DISTRICT 9 RULES - i.e. "Interleaguing" rules that impact all games and all leagues across the District, discuss Umpiring, and an invite to a district-wide session scheduled shortly after the start of the season.  Plans include running through the fundamentals of umpiring so everyone has at least the basics to set the tone of the game and educate on field mechanics.  A major emphasis is on something most leagues do:  developing umpires from within the ranks of the managers and coaches in the league - helping them prepare for potential advancement to the next division in coaching, as well as build on the 'empathy' of the position behind the plate and in the field!  Check back for more information or e-mail Gary Taylor with any umpiring questions.

District-wide Scorekeeping Clinics

PRE-SEASON - (normally about one week prior to the first scheduled games) -  The District Head Scorekeeper presents a two-part workshop - and ALL scorekeepers from across the district are strongly encouraged to attend.  One session is usually focused on folks that are brand new to scorekeeping; and the other session is a review/refresher session for those who have kept score in the past and may include discussion about any rule changes that could impact the scorekeeper's responsibilities.

As sessions are scheduled (date/time/place finalized), the league presidents are advised and "this" site is updated !

Since the insurance only allows managers/coaches, and rostered players in the dugout during any game, and, to help the managers and coaches stay focused on "the game," Little League restricts communication between those 'outside the dugout/playing field' and those in the dugout, managers and coaches are encouraged to learn, at minimum, the basics of keeping score - and have one of the coaches in the dugout keep 'a book' for the reference of the rostered volunteers so they have the information in the dugout.

ONGOING OPPORTUNITIES:

Managers & Coaches - "Coaches Resource Center" - Click here for more information.

Little League International Unveiled Free On-Line Resource Center Website for Coaches and Managers.  "Passwords" (issued league-specific) were distributed to League Presidents.  If it cannot be located, contact your District Administrator.

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (March 7, 2008) – Little League International recognizes and appreciates the challenges that come with being a Little League manager or coach, so it has developed a free on-line coaching resource that Little League managers and coaches can turn to for reference, education, or to stay current with the latest drills and coaching techniques ...
