Character  ~  Courage  ~  Loyalty

"Fifty years from now ...

... perhaps even just a moment away ...

it won't matter who struck out, who got a home run, or who dropped a fly ball
in your Little League game, but the world will be a better place because
YOU
took the time to
Make A Positive Difference in the life of at least One Child! "

For both Adults and Youth involved in Little League® - where the focus is appropriately on Child Development and ALL the kids are playing our heartstrings - there is an abundance of avenues and opportunities to make a positive difference!

Make "Best Use" of each and every moment you're gifted with ...
that ONE moment may be your only opportunity with that particular child !

LITTLE LEAGUE® BASEBALL & SOFTBALL's

*   Oregon District 9   *

currently serves families (youth ages 5 through 18) across Lane and north Douglas Counties with "conventional" teams in
  • Co-ed Tee-Ball,
  • Co-ed Baseball - coach pitch minors, player pitch minors, Majors, and Juniors,
  • Girls' fastpitch Softball - coach pitch minors, player pitch minors, Majors, Juniors and Seniors,
  • and with Little League's "Adaptive Baseball Division" - Challenger Division®. -  "The Bridge Between Observation & Participation" for children with 'disabilities' - for ages 5 through completion of their high school equivalent.

Note:

Tee-Ball is generally ages 5-7.  Minors is generally ages 7-11.  The "Minors" for both Baseball and Softball is chartered as a fully instructional division.   The "Major" division continues "instructional" play with a more competitive environment and generally includes youth ages 9-12.  The Junior (13-14), Senior (14-16), and Big League (16-18) divisions are even more competitive.  Softball has a slightly different age structure.

For Baseball, as players move to the Junior division, the basepath changes from a 60' to a 90' basepath with a longer pitching distance.

A child's "league age" for participation in Tee-Ball and Baseball is determined by the child's age on April 30th of the current year.  For Girls' Softball, in line with other softball programs, the players "league age" is that of the player on the immediate prior December 31st.

The five leagues in our District that are currently chartered through the end of the 2009 are  listed here.  Click on the League Name and/or visit the Local Leagues - Who/What/Where page for more information.  Note: The "Challenger Division" is run as a District-wide program.

Because Little League ® is a "young program" to the area District 9 serves, this website is created and maintained in a slightly different fashion than most "local" or district Little League sites.  As administrators of this site, our focus is on educating and informing folks about what it is about Little League that makes it unique from other programs they may have available to them when considering participation for their child or for themselves as a volunteer.  In browsing the site, we hope you'll "catch the bug" and "jump on the bandwagon" of "Little League Baseball and Softball" - a program "For Every Child."

Most of our local leagues hold registrations beginning in mid-to-late January, and end by early March.  "Regular Season" generally begins with practices and games in mid-to-late March and ending in mid-June for most age levels.  A "Fall Ball" or "training and development" program may be set up by area leagues to encourage ongoing participation and skill development for interested youth - and to help keep youth 'occupied.'

"Post Regular Season" :
After a full season of "Every Kid Plays" in your local Little League, players ages 9 through 18 have an opportunity toward election to a much more competitive segment - Tournament/All Star Teams - "Icing On The Cake" for approximately 5% of the regular season kids in any given league.  The number of teams (specific to certain ages) that can enter these tournaments is structured, thus limiting the number of potential participants.  Examples:

  • A league may apply with their District Administrator to enter one or two league age 9&10 and/or 10&11 year old teams for Baseball and Softball All Stars, but can only enter one team in Little League (league ages 11 &12 from Majors), Juniors, Seniors, and Big League.  Teams through Seniors are 'limited' to a maximum of 14 players on a roster.   In Little League Baseball, if one league only has one regular season "Major" team, they may apply to be approved toward their eligible players being combined with up to two other leagues toward creation of a single All Star team - which would then be the representative Tournament Team representing the combined leagues.  Within Softball, Little League often allows for additional accommodations because of the lower participation numbers across the program.
  • The 9&10 and 10&11 year old team players for All Stars may be selected from regular season Minor or Major teams.  The "Little League" All Star team must be selected from eligible 11 & 12 year olds on regular season Major teams.
  • Commitment to the "new team" into the summer, and the best of sportsmanship are also major factors. With continuing wins, tournament play could include games through late August!
  • The Tournaments begin with District level playoffs to determine the team that will represent the District in State Tournaments.
  • Information about tournaments held in District 9 (including the State Tournament the District hosts in any specific year), are posted on the "Post-Season Tournament" page in our Directory!  You're encouraged to check out tournament results on that Page.

LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL & SOFTBALL®

YOUR local child development progam:

  1. WHERE EVERY CHILD WITH A DESIRE TO - CAN PLAY BALL - no matter their level of skill or development.  The 'requirements' are that they be within the ages eligible to play and reside within the boundaries of a chartered Little League. (from Tee-Ball through Big League, ages 5 through 18, plus the Challenger Division® - Little League's Adaptive Baseball for youth who have mental and/or physical 'disabilities.')
  2. where chartered leagues are operated 100% by Volunteers who do 'everything' with a focus on their Non-Profit educational program being #1 - SAFE, #2 - FUN, #3 - A LEARNING ENVIRONMENT, #4 - AFFORDABLE FOR EVERY CHILD WITHIN THEIR COMMUNITY(ies) ...
  3. where it is imperative that the entire Community be involved to support your hometown program - as businesses, organizations, and Individuals  ...
  •  coming out in droves to the enjoy the kids' games -
  • cheering on ALL the kids and positively supporting the volunteer umpires, managers, and coaches
  • volunteering to help make a positive difference in the lives of area youth
  • making donations in ANY amount for 'general expenses,' equipment needs, facility development and/or procurement, training opportunities, etc.
  • as sponsors  - to cover the cost of uniforming a team and/or teams,
  • or to help cover the leagues' expenses for those children most at risk - the growing number of youth who want to play but "assume they can't" because their families are caught up in the economy mess,
  • supporting and participating in any local league fundraisers
  • and any other means of supporting your hometown program to help keep their expenses at a minimum as they recruit "Every Child," provide fundamentals and safety training opportunities for leadership and the kids, provide safe Little League approved equipment, and develop safe playing facilities.

Little League is fairly 'new" to Lane County - having chartered the first-ever Little League here in January 2002 !

Our "District" organization is also chartered with Little League® and, like each of the District 9-associated leagues, is registered as a non-profit in Oregon as well as affiliated with the Federal Tax Exempt group (501-3-c) for Little League Baseball and Softball, Inc. ®

In an evolving process, we continue to center league attention on developing smaller boundaried areas so folks feel it is TRULY their "local neighorhood" Little League! We have changed from one VERY large league boundary to 5 leagues focused on 'hometown' development to serve smaller portions of the big picture.   "Stay Tuned!"  for additional changes and smaller "neighborhood" focused development across our District!
