OMYFC Football FAQ's

How many games in a season? Typically, 8 games and then playoffs.

In which league does OMYFC participate? OMYFC is a member of the Jefferson Shelby Youth Football League. Other participating members are Homewood, Vestavia, Briarwood, Pelham, Helena, Chelsea, Hoover/Spain Park and Thompson

Where and when are the games played? The schedule is arranged by the league and is released about one week prior to the first game. Games will be held at participating parks. Generally, about half of the games will be at Oak Mountain, and the other half away. Games will be played weekly on one of the following nights: Mondays, Tuesday, or Thursdays

What times are the games? There are two games a night, starting at 6:00 and 7:30. The junior divisions (70lb, 80lb, 90lb, and 105lb) are the first game and the senior divisions (120lb and 130lb) are the 2nd game. There is usually a $2 admission charge to all games. This is subject to change.

What division will my son participate in? There are 6 age/weight divisions. A player may request to play up in age and weight but not down. The earliest date of birth to qualify for the 70# division is August 1 (of 2005). However, ALL OTHER divisions have moved the earliest date of birth to May 1 of the appropriate year. Grade and weight will also factor in to determining a particular player’s division. Please refer to our website, www.omyfc.com, for more details including a flow chart that gives specific instruction for determining your particular situation.

What is the Kick-off Classic? This is the Oak Mountain High School Football Exhibition game - our community league has traditionally supported the event. Cheerleaders and bands all participate. It is a fund raiser for the High school Athletic Boosters.

What is the refund policy? Any player leaving the team up to 10 calendar days after the first practice will receive a full refund less cost of jersey. Any player leaving the team after 10 calendar days and before the 2nd weigh in will receive a refund less the cost the jersey. Any player that does not make their respective weight during the 2 weigh-ins and does not wish to play up in the next weight class, will receive a refund less the cost of the jersey. All refunds will be held until equipment has been turned into the Head Coach or the Equipment Director.

How is the coach selected? Our goal is to assemble a quality group of coaches. All OMYFC coaches must first volunteer for the position. From the pool of volunteers, coaches are selected based on experience, character, and reputation within our league. All returning coaches are evaluated by the parents from the prior season. These evaluations are used to identify strengths to build on, and weaknesses to improve upon. In addition, coaches attend pre-season seminars, and clinics hosted by Oak Mountain High School Head Coach Jeff Harris and staff. This supports our effort to keep current on skill and fundamental development, as well as drills and strategy. Coaching and playing experience of our coaches includes youth, high school, college, and professional football.

What will be expected of parents during the season? Parents are responsible for getting their children to practice and games on time. Parents are requested to volunteer to help host each home game their team plays. These jobs are Set-up, gate workers, chains, announcer, camera man, clean up, and other misc.

What happens in case of inclement weather? We do play in rain. We do not play in thunder and lightning storms.

What happens if my child can not make practice? Attendance at all practices and games is required. Any absence must be reported to the coach prior to a practice or game. Failure to attend practices will result in less playing time and in some cases, no playing time in the game.

  2. At what age can my child register to cheer for OMYFC?
Registration is open for rising 1st thru 6th graders
  3. Why does it cost so much to cheer?
First, the required apparel items are priced at what it costs OMYFC. We do not make any profit off the required apparel items as we already understand that the cost is substantial. Second, Oak Mountain is not funded by a municipality as are other programs in our league. OMYFC has to incur all the charges to maintain our program including field development, all of the amenities at the field (concession stand, bathroom supplies etc), improvements, insurance etc. A portion of the registration fee also pays for instruction at clinic.
  4. Do you have to "try out" to cheer for Oak Mountain Youth?
No, this is a community based activity and is open to anyone in the Oak Mountain community. (Please note that if you have a football player you need to find out more information about eligibility and residency).
  5. The cheerleading squads are referred to as 80#, 90#, 105#, 120# or 130#. Does that have anything to do with the cheerleader's weight?
    No, it refers to the maximum weight that the football player can weight in a certain age class. Cheerleaders are split by grade as follows: 80# = 1st & 2nd; 90# = 3rd; 105# = 4th; 120#= 5th; 130# = 6th
  6. When are the games played?
Games are normally played Monday, Tuesday or Thursday nights beginning the week of Labor Day and going through mid October. Games are generally on DIFFERENT nights every week and can be at either 6:30 pm or 7:45 pm. The Jefferson-Shelby Youth Football League attempts to schedule the younger teams at 6:30 but there is no guarantee of which time an age group will be given per week. If the team has a successful season they may proceed to playoff which will add a couple weeks to the schedule.
  7. When will we know the schedule for football games?
The schedules are put together by the Jefferson-Shelby Youth Football League (JSYFL). The schedules are typically finalized mid to late August.
  8. How often do cheerleading squads practice?
That is basically the decision of each coach. Practice begins as soon as clinics are completed. Usually once football season begins practice tapers off. In past seasons, the squads practiced about twice per week during August. However, if there are problems and the coach feels that the squad needs more work, the coach may decide to schedule additional practice. Also, if the squad chooses to participate in competition then there are added practices as well. Practices are usually held in the evening hours or weekends.
  9. Are there any other sports that the cheerleaders cheer at?
No, Oak Mountain Youth Football and Cheerleading only cheers for the football games associated for Oak Mountain Youth football. There is no association with cheering for Oak Mountain High School sports.
  10. Where are the games played?
Oak Mountain Youth Football and Cheerleading has a football field that is behind OMIS and beside the parking lot at OMHS. The home games are played here and away games will be played at the opposing park. There are generally four of five home games and four of five away games each season.
  11. How long does a football game last?
Usually about 1 to 1 ½ hours depending on age of the team playing and the game itself.
  12. What are cheer "clinics"?
In the past OMYFC has held clinics put on by the OMHS Varsity cheerleaders. The Varsity cheerleaders are paid to choreograph the half time dance routine, cheers and chants. Payment to the OMHS cheerleaders is paid per girl in the program and is part of the registration fee.
  13. When are the cheer clinics scheduled?
August 1st through August 4th The clinic will be held for each squad at OMHS. Please wear comfortable clothing, tennis shoes and bring a water bottle.
  14. What items need to be purchased outside of what is sold at registration?
White no show socks. If the squad attends competition then all girls on each squad will obtain matching socks.
  15. What is competition?
OMYFC squads have in the past attended cheer competition with Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) which is generally held in November. Cheer squads from around the state compete with a dance/cheer routine.
