*** Ottawa Phillies finished in a 3 way tie for second place. Softball Canada officials wanted them to play in a tiebreaker game at 6am Saturday morning to determine which of the 3 tied teams would get second place and the double life that comes with it. With the round robin draw not being completed until close to midnight Friday, tiebreakers at 6 in the morning did not sound appealing to Ottawa and they refused to play. As a result they were seeded 5th and did not proceed to the Championship draw.
Softball Canada officials said they had to go by the book in terms of how to break ties. However this tournament is not a week long event like the Junior or Senior Nationals and special rules should have applied. Normally Fridays at Nationals are for tiebreakers and the start of the Championship Draw. This tournament did not start until Thursday and the round robin was not scheduled to be over until 11pm Friday.
One final point on this subject and then I will leave it alone. There was a three way tie for second but one of the teams (Wellesley) had defeated the other two (Ottawa & Victoria) in the round robin. If head to head record is not the first tie breaker then there is something wrong with the Softball Canada tie breaker rules!!!!
On to the Championship Draw. This is the usual National draw with the both first & second place finishers receiving a double life and the 3rd & 4th place finishers one life.

The Cold Springs Cats have won the 1997 Canadian Men's Masters Championship! Cold Springs defeated the Victoria Payless Masters 2-1 in an exciting Championship final much to the delight of the large crowd on hand. The game ended on an exciting 9-3-2-5 double play! I apologize for not knowing all of the BC players by name but here is how it happened. In the bottom of the 7th with one out and a runner on first, the BC player hit a ball into the right centre gap all the way to the fence. The coach tried to score the runner all the way from first but he was out at the plate without a slide. The batter somehow lost count of the number of outs and slowed up between 2nd and 3rd and was nailed at third to end the game.
The winning pitcher for Cold Springs was Terry Lewis. Dale Ortman took the loss for BC. Mike McIvor of Cold Springs knocked in both Cold Springs runs with an RBI single in the 1st to score Steve Mitts and a solo home run over the centre field fence in the 5th. BC scored there lone run in the 5th with CF Reg Underwood singling, stealing second and scoring on a base hit.
Reg Underwood also made the defennsive play of the game in the 1st inning leaping over the fence to rob John Maughan of what would have been a 3 run shot.
Cold Springs second baseman Steve Mitts was named outstanding player for the tournament. Mitts batted leadoff for Cold Springs and played an outstanding second base all week long. Cold Springs LF Mike McIvor led the tournament in HR's with 3.
The majority of the Cold Springs Cats roster is composed of players who captured the 1980 OASA Senior Eliminations.
The Cats finished the 4 day, 10 team tournament with a record of 7-0 defeating 7 different teams in the process. BC advanced to the finals by defeating Halifax, NS 8-0 (5 inning mercy) in the 10am semi-final.
