Fastball Memorabilia
I would like to find a good home for 2 rare / hard to find items.
One is a framed event poster ( 24 x 16 ) from the 1975 Canadian Softball Championships held in Oshawa Ontario. The other is a framed poster/photo ( 28 x 18 ) of the 1995 World & Canadian Champions, the Toronto Gators. These 2 items would look good in a Hall of Fame or as part of someone's fastball/ softball memorabilia collection.
These items might have a greater sentimental value to someone other then me. If you are interested in either of these items send me an e-mail with a short note why you are interested in the item.
If there is more then one person interested in an item I will select the person who I think has the best reason for wanting the item. If you are interested let me know by November 30th. at the latest.

Tip Top Tailors : Sultans of Softball 1949
The sultans of softball
Transcendent 1949 team to receive long overdue acclaim when it enters hall next month
By IAIN COLPITTS, SPECIAL TO SUN MEDIA
Last Updated: 10th October 2009, 5:16am
When Charlie Justice entered an Arkansas hotel in September 1949, he wasn't welcomed with open arms. Because he was a black man, the star pitcher for the Tip Top Tailors softball team was told to leave immediately.
"They wouldn't let Charlie in the hotel," teammate and left fielder Ray Pulfer said. "So I said to them: 'That's not right.'
"Then one of the workers grabbed me by the arm and said: 'Look here, don't side with the blacks down here or they'll have you looking down the barrel of a gun.' So that really scared me, I kept my mouth shut after that."
Justice was one of three black players on the Tip Top Tailors, the champions of the 1949 Amateur Softball Association of America. The team finally is getting its due next month when it enters Softball Canada's Hall of Fame.
Shelley Milley (catcher) and Percy McCracken (pitcher), the other black members of the team, also were discriminated against the minute they set foot in Little Rock.
"When we arrived at the airport, there was a sign to the left that said: 'Whites' and a sign to the right that said: 'Blacks.' We walked right down the middle," recalled third baseman and Toronto resident Bill (Babe) Gresko.
"Then, when we got to the hotel, we all walked in together and the manager said: 'Come on you black boys, get out of here. You don't belong in here.' So, we all walked out as a team and they ended up staying in the black section of town. There were three or four other teams that had the same problem."
The Toronto entry was Canada's lone team.
The ASA championship was considered the unofficial world championship and the '49 Tailors were the first team from Canada to win it.
"A lot of teams couldn't afford to go, so anyone who had the money went," said Pulfer, now 86 and living in Etobicoke. "So we played a best-of-three series against Peoples (Credit Jewellers). We beat them in the first two games, so that sent us on our way."
Long before the Blue Jays came to Toronto, fastball was booming.
During the late 1940s, thousands of fans would stroll over to Kew Gardens to watch the best teams compete in the Beaches Fastball League. Tip Top Tailors was one of them.
Justice, Milley and McCracken died long ago, along with all but four teammates.
Pulfer, Gresko, Lenny Gaull (catcher), and Pat McCullough (centre field) are the only survivors from the championship squad.
Over the past few decades, the team has been relatively unheard of in the softball community. Thanks to research done by John Stevens, a St. Marys resident who used to work for the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame, their achievements will be recognized.
"The team was in danger of being forgotten," Stevens said. "People from that era were dying and if we don't get them in the Hall of Fame, there's no way they're going to be remembered."
Stevens put together the bid for their nomination and in June they were named one of this year's inductees.
***
Before 1949, nobody in Little Rock had ever heard of Tip Top Tailors. Certainly, they were shocked when the Torontonians were one of only two undefeated teams when they reached the semifinal against Mercedes, Tex., the other team without a loss.
"We were just as good as any other team in that tournament," said Gresko, 86.
In the championship qualifier against Mercedes on Sept. 21, they scored four times en route to a 4-0 victory.
Justice wouldn't let the prejudice stop him as he allowed only one hit in the win.
The stage was set for the final. It would be the Tip Top Tailors against the Clearwater (Florida) Bombers and their phenom pitcher, Herb Dudley.
"He was a hell of a pitcher," Gresko said. "In one game, he struck out 58 men over 21 innings."
The championship game got under way on Sept. 23 and, 18 innings later, the Tailors had defeated the Bombers 3-1.
To their credit, the Clearwater Bombers didn't make it easy. They led 1-0 until the seventh and final inning of regulation before Justice drove in the tying run.
He pitched the extra innings for Tip Tops, after Russ Johnston worked the first seven. Justice struck out 13 batters.
Dudley went the entire 18 innings, one of three games he pitched in two days. Art Upper (right field) eventually found a hole in Dudley's delivery and sealed the game with a two-run single in the 18th.
"We got lucky because one of their games was on a Sunday and Dudley wouldn't pitch because he was a preacher," Gresko said.
"They ended up losing and had to beat us twice to win the championship. If they had won that Sunday game, it would've just been a single knockout."
And with that, the Tip Top Tailors were the "world champions" of softball.
***
Elite players were high in demand during this time and Justice, McCracken and Milley all brought enough talent from Michigan to secure them full-time jobs in Canada.
"Charlie and Shelley worked for Tip Tops during that time," Gresko said. "Percy was working with Levy's Auto Parts, but we picked him up to play for us in the tournament."
"Down there the blacks were frowned upon, but up here they were on equal footing," Pulfer said. "The three of them came over from Detroit. Anyone who came from Detroit lived like kings here in Canada, but back in Detroit they were nothing."
Bill McBratney played for People's Credit Jewellers in the Beaches league and recalled Justice's value.
Justice worked a few days at Tip Tops and was paid quite lucratively on the diamond.
"Charlie was selling suit material for Tip Tops," McBratney said. "Of course when I say that, I don't know how much selling he did."
In Canada, these players were given the chance to shine on the field and escape the prejudice they faced back home.
***
The Tip Tops players didn't receive the reception they would've liked from the Little Rock crowd upon winning the championship.
"The winning team was supposed to have a banquet but we didn't have one because of the black boys and us being Canadian," Gresko said.
"We had our party at two o'clock in the morning because the game didn't finish until after midnight. We went to the black section of town and that's where we had our party."
However, it was great returning home, and Pulfer took in every moment of the ceremony when the team arrived back in Toronto.
"They took us down to city hall and they were very nice to us." Pulfer said. "We stood on the steps of city hall and were given many gifts. It was a lovely reception."
Even before the team left for Arkansas, they were treated like kings. The championship meant a lot to Toronto and Tip Tops owner Joe Dunkleman, who made sure his boys went down to Little Rock in style.
"They travelled down in a Tip Top Tailors plane," Stevens said. "It was really a first-class operation. They were all in their suits looking sharp and it was a class act. That wouldn't happen today."
***
The sport was at its peak in terms of popularity through the 1940s, but management changes and a lack of sponsorship led to the downfall of the league shortly after Tip Tops won the world championship.
"We used to draw well out there. Maybe a couple thousand every night," Gresko said as he reminisced about his time spent playing at Kew Gardens. "But 1952 was the turning point when they shut down the league for the season."
The problem started at the opening of the 1950 season, when executives decided to charge a fee at the gates, something that didn't sit well with the fans.
Also, imports were no longer allowed into the league, meaning there would be no more Americans with the skills of Justice, McCracken or Milley playing at Kew Gardens.
Dunkleman had seen enough. The team didn't renew with the league in 1951 and that was the end of the franchise's legacy.
By 1952, the league didn't have enough team sponsors to continue and ceased operations for that year.
The league returned in 1953, but it was never the same.
"After that, we started to get a lot of different teams," McBratney said. "The calibre of those teams wasn't as strong as they were previous (before 1952), but it was still pretty good ball."
By the 1970s, the league had expanded outside of the Toronto core as teams such as Scarborough Cable TV, the Oshawa Tony's and the Richmond Hill Dynes (1972 world champions) made their way over to Kew Gardens.
"Attendance wasn't like it was back in the days of the original Beaches League," said Stevens, who played in that league during the 1970s. "We might get 300 people, not 3,000."
Over time, the numbers dwindled. By 1987, the league had quietly gone extinct.
***
Through his quest to document the team, Stevens uncovered an incredible story.
"After getting to know both Ray and Babe, I discovered a story that could be made into a movie," Stevens said. "It was a completely different era in the sport, one that has never been duplicated and probably never will be."
When the team is inducted into the Hall of Fame on Nov. 14 in Ottawa, Stevens is determined the four remaining players will be at the banquet.
"Somehow, I'm going to get the living players up there," Stevens said. "I'm going to get them up there because they deserve it."
For Stevens, what started out as a standard nomination procedure has turned into so much more. He has come to know two terrific men and is grateful for the experience.
"Once you get to know these people, you want them to have their last hurrah," Stevens said. "They're both exceptional people and they've given much more back to the game than they've taken from it."

NAFA MASTER’S EAST WORLD SERIES
(Rockford, IL) September 14, 2009 - It was an awesome event with perfect weather and great fields, great umpiring and the new four-game guarantee was well received by all, except for a few players with really sore muscles today.
Congratulations to the Champions of this year’s event:
35 & over – New Image, WI
40 & over – Seadogs, MA
45 & over – Eagle Pack, IN
50 & over - Nietzer’s/Kelly, MI
55 & over – Co-Champs Texas Stars, TX & Bower Electric, WI
For the complete brackets and All-World Teams, please see the results on our web site at www.nafafastpitch.com .
Thanks to Marianne Larson of Rockford Parks District for having an awesome friendly staff and taking care of all the players and staff like they were her own. Field Prep Supervisors Dave and Gene and the entire field prep staff were awesome. Concession Manager Gene and his staff were great. Hospitality Ambassadors Cindy and Mary took care of everyone working the whole weekend and it was much appreciated by all. The gate staff and scorekeepers were friendly and accurate. Thanks to tournament directors Loren Lathrop from Wisconsin, Mike Watson from Kansas, UIC Carley Parish from Canada, Business Manager Kris Russom from Oregon and Masters Committee member Mike Clark from Iowa.
Every team that played in this event and the West Masters are invited to the “East vs West Battle” in Vegas in late October where we will play a regular four-game guarantee tournament for all who attend. In addition to the regular event, the West Masters Champ will play the East Masters Champ in each age division in a one game winner takes all World Championship game Saturday night. There will be no Friday games.
The teams voted overwhelmingly to return to Rockford for the East Masters next year on the same weekend September 10-12 in 2010, the weekend after Labor Day. They also voted to keep the same four-game guarantee format with one round robin Friday night game at 5PM or later, two more round robin games on Saturday that seed all teams into a single elimination on Sunday. The championship games will be scheduled at 4:45PM or earlier and preferably at 3PM.
The teams wished to continue using the NAFA ball but nearly 50% want to change to a yellow ball for visibility, especially for night games, so we will look into that some more. Almost half the people wanted to allow the courtesy runner be the last out like the present. They would also like a player not in the game to be able to be a designated runner once per inning. I will give other players and coaches the chance to fill out the survey for another week and post the rest of the survey results as soon as possible.
To the Teams that have made NAFA the first choice in Masters play, we thank you for your support. 60 masters teams from the U.S. and Canada are participating this year in the East and West and the growth is surely due to your participation and your willingness to give input to our NAFA Directors who guide your program and it is truly the “Players Program”.
The awards, fields, field preps, ball, format, , supervision, the friendliness, openness & willingness to make things right, along with the camaraderie between the teams in the Masters program is unmatched anywhere. Overall the umpiring was very good and consistent.
From the 31 year old who is turning 32 this calendar year to the 71 year olds(there are 7 of them), the NAFA Masters program is supremely successful because of you the players. We wrote down pitching velocities for most pitchers and the new player photo ID check went well and was well received and appreciated by all coaches.
Every event is not without hiccups and we had a couple, but we made every attempt to make them right when they were brought to our attention.
Thanks to each and every player, coach and spectator for making this an event to remember.
Yours in better Men’s Fastpitch,
Benjie Hedgecock

Memories of Elkland, the 2009 edition
The following is courtesy of the Eastern Ontario Fastball Blog (http://fitzroyfastball.blogspot.com/), it has nothing to do with masters fastball but it is darn entertaining, funny etc.
Memories of Elkland, the 2009 edition
Well, it took me a while to write the annual Memories of Elkland posting. Perhaps the older I get the longer it takes me to recover to be able to put the experience into a blog entry.
As always, names withheld to protect the guilty.
Rookies: There was a good contingent of "rookie" attendees to the tournament this year from the eastern Ontario teams. And of course one of the rights of passage when attending the Elkland tournament is going to the Moose - even if you may be just a bit shy of the required PA drinking age of 21. A strong showing at the Moose by a certain triumvirate of brothers from the east end, as well as their adopted fourth brother for the weekend. Another attendee, who has attained the ripe old age of 23, was asked for ID a the Moose. Since in his home province of Quebec the drinking age is 18, he kind of smirked when handing over his license. This did not go over well with the waitress who demanded that he "respect America"!
Seventh place: Both Greenbush Generals and West Carleton Electric finished with the same record and at the same time. However, based on the number of citations earned (2), Greenbush is unofficially awarded seventh place. Who knew that whizzing on someone's lawn in Elkland would earn you a visit by a state trooper and a mandatory visit to a bank machine to withdraw the required fine?
Weirdness: There is always something strange and bizarre happening in Elkland. This year, it was the sighting of an albino skunk. Seriously, dontcha think that you might consider quitting drinking for good when you are staggering back to the tent from the bar and run across an albino skunk? Only in Elkland.......
Lookin' good Keeneyville: Those that have been to the Elkland tourney have experienced the variety in uniforms. Some teams are lookin' sharp. There are some teams that kind of have matching jerseys. Other teams, we're talking muscle shirts, cut off Levis and mismatched unis. Well this year, Keeneyville was looking good in their new uniforms. Way to go Kenneyville!
Jesse's got a girl: Long time blog readers will recall that West Carleton Electric had the same Elkland bat boy for both 2007 and 2008. This year was the third year in a row - as some of the guys were rolling into town, they saw Jesse by the Acorn and had him sprinting the whole way to the ball park following the truck! Jesse enlightened us on the news and views from the perspective of 17 year old rural Pennsylvannian, which was a treat. We got to hear about his mom, dad, step dad, brother, sister-in-law, nieces, nephews, and meet his girlfriend (who is 17 but still in grade 9). Good work Jess best of luck with the new date!
Tent city: Once again we had the 16 x 20 Army tent on hand. And once again, the Pizza Barn delivered to the address "Big Green Army Tent, Elkland Ball Diamonds" (only took 18 minutes). This is the way to go - close to the ball park, stumbling distance to the Moose and good times around the campfire, telling stories, chugging Yeungling, and sharing laughs especially at the story about Granny and the "Nintendo-movie". Plans are for a 32 x 20 tent next year.
Buzz saw: One draw back to the camping idea is the sound of snoring. Really unbelievable. I can't believe people snore like that. We're talking band saw cutting through a 2 x 12 piece of wet pine. One guy about 50 yards away was moaning and groaning like he was in some sort of stag movie. And honest to god, leave your freakin' dog at home, OK? Next year, top of list - ear plugs!
Perfect venue, perfect weather: The weather was downright perfection. If you were running a ball tourney in early September, this would be the exact weather you would order. I hate to repeat myself, but it's my blog and I will: the venue is so good for the fastball purist. It really is a special atmosphere, with Molly's Red Barn, the grandstand, the fields, the fans, the $2 pints. The locals are very friendly and love their ball. The $6.50 chicken dinner is pretty much worth the 5.5 hour drive. (I ate it Saturday, Sunday and Monday.) Yeah you pee in a trough in the main men's room - but it's a clean trough by golly! If you have never been, make a point to go there once before you retire from the game.
The competition: There were 17 teams, with some big names playing. The draw worked pretty well, and seemed to be balanced, even if our team did get a difficult first game. Our game on the Sunday night was really special. We played the home town ESA Bellys in an emotional game in front of a large vocal crowd. Chugging pints afterward in the dugout after a tough loss was a special moment.
Worst...hot dog....ever: So after the big game on Sunday night, most of the guys have a bit of a 'gerrr on. We call up the Pizza Barn, but they're closed. Where do you get some grub in Elkland on a Sunday night? We hit up the hot dog guy just outside the Beam House. It's 11:30pm, we're starving, how bad can a weiner dog be, right? The hot dog guy whips us up some "Michigans". You cannot appreciate how rude these things were. I'm talking lukewarm weiner on a cheap white bun, with some pureed cat food on top with a sprinkling of grungy onions. Jeez, I'm getting queasy just thinking of it. You know that they ain't good when Big Joe is throwing one on the fire pit 'cause he can't eat the damn thing.
Mr. Sherman, RIP: On a serious note, my heart goes out to the Sherman family on the death of their dad. Durk Sherman was the guy behind this event from back in 1952 - and he died on the Sunday of the 2009 tourney. His sons Bill and Grant continued to run the event and keep things going for the weekend despite their grief. Apparently there was a moving tribute to Mr Sherman at the Moose on Sunday night, which I missed unfortunately. The spirit of Durk lives on at the best fastball venue I've ever been to.

Haldane leads Blazers to Masters fastball title
Courtesy : The Kamloops Daily News
Kamloops – Rich Haldane was named MVP for leading the Kamloops Sandman Inn Blazers to the Western Canadian Masters Men’s Fastball Championship title at Charles Anderson Stadium on Sunday, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a more deserving MVP anywhere.
Haldane, a 40-year-old Vernon resident, did pretty much everything for the Blazers as they won a pair of Sunday games to win the title on their home field.
The tournament featured eight 40-plus men’s teams and six 35-plus women’s teams from the western provinces and territories. It started Thursday.
In the men’s final, a 5-3 victory over Kelowna Andre’s, Haldane was the winning pitcher — his seventh victory of the weekend — and he also went 3-for-5 and belted a two-run home run.
That came only an hour or so after he finished pitching nine innings in a 6-5 extra-inning victory over Ladner in a semifinal.
For the weekend, Haldane was 7-1 in 53 innings of work, his ERA was around two and he batted around .400.
He also was named the top pitcher for the round-robin, in which he went 5-0 with a 1.13 ERA, striking out 45 batters in 31 innings.
Haldane lives in Vernon but travelled here throughout the summer to play in the Kamloops Major Men’s Fastball League during the week. He helped Great Britian to a seventh-place finish at the ISF World Softball Championship in Saskatoon in late July.
Kevin Derdall of the Moose Jaw Masters was named top batter for the round-robin, going 11-for-15 (.733) with a home run, six runs and four RBI.
The Moose Jaw Chillers Relics won the women’s title at Charles Anderson on Sunday, hammering Edmonton Silverline, 8-2 in the championship final.
The Relics went through to the final after winning a playoff game on Saturday afternoon. Edmonton had to beat the Saskatchewan Connextion, 7-2, in a Sunday morning semifinal.
Kim Neithercut of the Relics was named MVP for the women’s division.
All she did was bat .423 with eight runs and eight RBI, including a three-run home run in a Saturday game. She also pitched a victory in the round-robin and closed out the final by throwing four solid innings to end the game.
Her teammate, Yvonne Carlton, was named top pitcher in the round-robin. Carlton was 2-0 with a 2.50 ERA in 14 innings of work.
The top batter in the round-robin went to Edmonton Silverline’s Tammy Davies, who was 11-for-15 (.733) with nine runs and nine RBI.
The lone local women’s team, the Kamloops Dearborn Ford Classics, went 0-5 in the round-robin and did not qualify for the playoff round.

Fastball a respite from cancer fight
Rienguette's mere presence in Callander earns him MVP award
Posted By KEN PAGAN, THE NUGGET
Brad Rienguette didn't throw a pitch or swing a bat during the weekend's Turk Turgeon Memorial fastball tournament in Callander, but he was still named the tournament's most valuable player.
It was Rienguette's presence which had the most impact on teammates on Stewie's Orphans, a collection of friends from throughout the North who captured the championship in the 10-team tournament.
But as former teammate, fellow fastball hurler and friend Ken Besner of North Bay said Sunday morning, I don't think I've ever seen so many grown men cry as I did this weekend."
Rienguette, 50, a world-class fastball pitcher in his day who was the MVP at the 1979 Canadian championships and remained an elite pitcher for two decades, is battling pancreatic and liver cancer.
Known throughout the province's fastball community as a burly, fun-loving figure, the Sudbury native has lost considerable weight and is in constant pain, although he's fighting as hard as I can."
He struggled to watch a couple games from the dugout Saturday, often keeled over in visible pain. He came out for post-game handshakes, which turned into hugs and tears as Rienguette caught up with former teammates such as Besner, Jim Lisk and Terry Vendetti -- Rienguette pitched for North Bay's 1991 Northern Honda provincial championship team.
He had everything as a pitcher, but more than that, he's just a great guy and we
became great friends," Besner said. We've had some good chuckles this weekend, remembering some good times. There are lots of good stories."
When word spread Sunday morning that Rienguette had to leave, there were more guys in the parking lot lined up to say goodbye than on the ball field or inside the Legion hall.
It means a lot," Rienguette said of spending the weekend with fastball friends. Over the last few years, this has been one of my favourite tournaments to just get together with the guys and have a good time.
We go back a long ways, so it's always good to see these guys. It's good to just come back to the ballpark and meet a lot of faces you've seen. Ballplayers are the best."
Rienguette's brothers, Gord and Ted, and father, Ralph, were on hand for the weekend, with Ted taking the field and playing for the first time since 1996. But the weekend was more than fastball.
Friday night there were five of us in the hotel room--in the last five weeks, I've never seen Brad smile so much as he was smiling Friday night," Ted said.
Rienguette first made his mark in the late 1970s, winning provincial titles for the Garson juniors.
While still junior-aged, he joined a St. Catharines team and pitched them to the 1979 senior national championship. At the nationals in St. John's, N. L., that year, Rienguette's fastball was clocked at 102 miles per hour.
I didn't believe it, but that's what they said," Rienguette said.
He's bruised a lot of catchers' hands over the years and batters often had to see two straight heaters whiz by and then wave at a 30-mile-an-hour changeup that seemed to stop in mid-air.
Rienguette estimates he's thrown a dozen no-hitters in competitive fastball, although others say the no-hitter count is more than 20.
What helped earn Rienguette such high regard among fellow players was the respect he's always shown for opponents and for the game.
Some say he probably could have thrown more no-hitters if he desired, but when his team had a comfortable lead, he would often choose to throw the ball in there to give opponents a chance to put the ball in play, rather than embarrass or overwhelm batters.
The whole idea about ball is to have respect for everyone," Rienguette said. If you don't have respect for your fellow ballplayer, you probably don't have much respect for yourself.
So I always tried to treat every ballplayer who came up to play against me like they were the No. 4 hitter on the ball club. That way, I'd show them respect, but I'd never try to embarrass anybody. I don't believe in that stuff."
Rienguette said going right from junior to winning a national championship in 1979 was among his favourite memories, but his experience in the sport is more about friends he's made and people he's met.
It's been a lot of fun over the years," Rienguette said. I've had a pretty amazing career when it comes to travelling places, playing a high level of ball, playing against the world's best and just meeting people from one end of North America to another and having a great time doing it."
North Bay's Bob Desgrosseilliers, who was part of the weekend reunion, came up playing junior ball with Rienguette in Garson.
As good a pitcher as Rienguette was, Desgrosseilliers also compares him to Babe Ruth, in that Rienguette is a character everyone loves and is always having a good time.
The good times were rolling on the weekend, but it was also emotional -- the odds in a battle against pancreatic cancer are not good and many old-time fastball die-hards made the most of an opportunity to share some memories.
At a team gathering Saturday night, teammate Doug Foley said, there was not a dry eye" in the room.
It was beautiful," Foley said. To have the chance for everyone to be together, share a few laughs and have a few beers, it was really special for everyone."

Brad Rienguette
In 1999, Rienguette's Sudbury Relics won North Bay's World Senior Men's Fastball tournament, playing the weekend with patches on their sleeves to honour slain Sudbury police officer Rick Mac- Donald.
Next weekend's Rick MacDonald Northern Ontario championships have now been renamed in Rienguette's honour.
Organizers of next month's world senior tournament in North Bay will make Rienguette an honorary chairman, after being flooded with requests from throughout the province to do so.

And of course to Al Doran for keeping the info flowing while a couple provinces over
It was a weekend of great fastball with tons of camaraderie. They teams spent the majority of the weekend renewing old friendships, great to see.
Sunday morning
Quarterfinals
Aurora 7
Waterdown 5
wp - Ken O'Sullivan
lp - Rod Fevreau
Aurora builds a large lead and scrappy Waterdown makes a late charge but falls a bit short. Workhorse Fevreau I believe pitches all but one game for the Hammer.
QF #2
Waterloo 8
Storms Fury 0
wp - Don Stebbings
lp - Rick Provost
Fury hung in there and stranded runners throughout the game but Waterloo was too much to handle.
Semi finals
Waterloo 7
Mitchell 1
wp - Todd Uhrig
SF #2
Cobourg 4
Aurora 3
wp - Wayne Wells
lp - George Karkambasis
Cobourg - HR Scott Wasson
Cobourg scores 4 early including an inside the park homer from Cobourg leadoff stick Scott Wasson. Aurora nips away at the lead while Karkambasis holds the fort. 4-3 lead heading into the 7th when the number 9 hitter for Aurora leads off with a triple to the gap. Wells gets an out and the next Aurora hitter sends one to medium CF where Dave Brownhill camps underneath it. Aurora sends the runner and only a perfect throw gets him. Brownhill unleashes a cannon and Cobourg catcher Brian McGuire applies the tag on a very close play the runner is called out. Wells finishes things off and throws a gem.
Final
Cobourg 7
Waterloo 0
wp - Tim Neill
lp - Todd Uhrig
Rematch of Saturday nights game and the defending champs Waterloo Classics up against undefeated Cobourg Force. The combination of a fresh Tim Neiil throwing darts, any team would have trouble scoring against Neill the way he was tossing along with it being the third game in a row for Waterloo makes this one a bit anti climatic. Cobourg scores early and often and Neill really doesn't get into any trouble. Congratulations to Cobourg Force for winning the Jack Cook OASA Provincial Masters championship. Cobourg was managed by Sylvia Ryan, Bill Fairney and Wayne Wells.
Each year, OASA presents the Jack Cook award to the Masters player, manager or coach who best exemplifies the sportsmanship, leadership and competitive spirit of Masters fastball in Ontario. Bob Abbott, OASA Executive Vice President, presented the award to Todd Uhrig of the Waterloo Classics. It was the fourth time in five years that a member of the Classics received the award. Sam Forbes (2005), Jodie Schnarr (2007) and Dana Seiling (2008) were the previous recipients.
Special recognition to the Red Hot Chili Pepper and coach Craig Smith. The Pepper were outfitted in new uni's for the weekend, rusty orange. They also changed the team name to Rusty's for the weekend. This was to honour former Pepper catcher Rusty Dekker.
Rusty was the consummate team player. Hard nosed yet the ultimate sportsman and gentleman both off and on the field. Whether he was hustling down the first base line to cover the infield throws, running out fly balls or taking foul balls off the body Rusty was a throw back old fashioned baseball player, but most of all he was he was a friend to all in the league. Rusty left us much too young. Very appropriate given that many of Rusty's former teammates returned to play in the tournament for the Pepper. Some of those same players played ball with Rusty for over 25 years and they are all the best of buddies. Great touch Smitty.
To everyone best of luck with the remainder of your seasons

Fitzroy Fastball's Travel Tip
With the new border rules taking effect on July 1, 2009 passports are now going to be required to drive down to the States.
Many area teams are planning trips down this summer to Au Sable or Elkland or other destinations in the land of the "US Americans". Now is the time for team organizers to start harassing teammates to get their passport applications in to beat the rush.
Mrs. Fitzroy Fastball and are taking the boys down to Darien Lake, NY this summer to ride the rollercoasters, so I went in earlier this week to the office on Sparks Street to get passports for the lads (Fitzroy Fastball Junior and his younger brother the T-Ball Caveman).
I went in at 1pm, and was out of there by 1:15, I kid you not. Now is the time to go because I'm thinking all the last minute Christmas Eve type shoppers are going to show up in mid-June in a major panic and it'll be a big time wait.
For more on how to get a passport visit this site.
And that's today's Fitzroy Fastball Travel Tip.

Thought you might enjoy a preview of our ad for the upcoming 2009 ISC Media Guide. (below).

Many of you will no doubt recognize the pitcher in the photo as Canadian Wayne Wells, who helped pitch the Waterdown Hammer team to a runner-up finish in the 2008 ISC T of C. Wayne was kind enough to grant us permission to use his photo in the ad.
The ISC Media Guide is one of the longest running publications in all of men’s fastpitch, and a “must have” for fastpitch fans. The guide includes a good portion of the material that appears on the official ISC website, www.iscfastpitch.com, including a recap of the prior year’s ISC World Tournament, and ISC II Tournament of Champions, with line scores, team and individual photos, award winners, directory and photos of ISC staff, ISC record books, rules, Hall of Fame inductions and more. We’ll post a note on this blog with the guide for 2009 is out.
The publication of this year’s guide, as well as a number of past year’s guides, is overseen by ISC Executive Director Ken Hackmeister and compiled by ISC Guide Managing Editors, Ed Kirner, of Montgomery, Illinois and Blair Setford of Mississauga, Ontario. The guide will include a number of Maddy’s Photos, including a number on the cover. Last year’s cover (above) also featured several shots by Maddy.
Our announcement for last year’s ISC Media Guide was posted on March 29, 2008, so release of the 2009 Media Guide is well underway, and due out, I suspect in about a month. We’ll be sure to let you know when it is.
Fastpitch fans can purchase ISC Media Guide for prior years:
Send check of money order for $7.50 (U.S.) payable to ISC. Mail to Ken Hackmeister 153 E. 200 S - - #10 - Farmington, UT 84025, or email Hackmeister at iscken (at) comcast (dot) net for information about ordering using either Visa or MasterCard.

ISC Appoints Rick Boyd as Canada East Regional Commissioner
The following is courtesy of the Fastpitchwest Morning Brief website.

From the ISC:
Last August, Colin Smith, ISC Commissioner in Ontario since 2003, gave notice of his resignation following the 2008 World Tournament in Kimberly. Colin is hoping to continue serving the Ontario Fastball League in whatever capacity is needed. We thank Colin for his years of service to both the game and the ISC.
To replace Colin in Ontario, we are pleased to announce that Rick Boyd has agreed to serve as a Regional Commissioner. Rick is well known to most fastball players and fans. He has played the game since age 9 and has been actively involved as a player, coach, administrator and tournament director. Rick served as the tournament director for all three Kitchener hosted ISC II championships in 2002, 2006 and 2007.
He began playing at age 9. At age 14 he began playing in the Kitchener Men’s Fastball League and has played in that league for 35-consecutive years. He served as league president from 1992 – 1997.
Over the years, he has been associated with K-W Pride, Waterloo Classics (Masters team) and most recently with the Bridgeport Braves who served as Host Team in both 2006 & 2007 ISC II Tournament of Champions.
Rick has been married to Debbie for 26 years and they have a 19-year old daughter, Stephanie. He is employed by Guillevin International (Electrical Distributors) in Guelph, ON as a branch manager.
Rick is highly respected in fastball circles for his dedication, work ethic, experience and love of the game. The ISC is happy to welcome Rick as a valued addition to the ISC.
Ken Hackmeister
Exec. Dir, ISC
Editor’s note: We congratulate Rick Boyd on the new position — and the ISC for choosing an outstanding person for the job. Rick was the driving force behind the back-to-back T of C’s in 2006 and 2007 in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, two of the most successful and well received T of C’s ever. (Rick was also tournament director for the event in its inaugural year, 2002)
Rick’s team, the Bridgeport Braves served as the host teams for the tournaments, showing equal doses of talent and class in the events. It was Rick and the Braves who extended their gracious hospitality to the California Lumberkings, in 2006, the first California team to ever compete in the T of C. The teams wound up exchanging gear, beer and friendship that first year, with the Lumberkings returning in 2007 to capture second place in the prestigious event. The Lumberkings shared their stories of the 2006 T of C, inspiring another California team, A-1 Taylor Farms to travel to Kitchener in 2007, where they took 3rd place, edged out of the title game by in-state rivals, the Lumberkings.
Those two years of stewardship by Rick Boyd generated more interest in the ISC II T of C, and in 2008, three California teams competed, including the Lumberkings — who won the tournament in their third try, along with the River City Rockers and Rude Pac, both of whom advanced to the playoff round. Rick’s hard work in Kitchener furthered the development of the tournament, which will host a record forty (40) teams in 2009.

Cornwall Team Gearing up for World Masters Games
Group gelling for Down Under trip for World Masters fastball tourney
Posted By TODD HAMBLETON

Updated 3 days ago
Cornwall's fastball team in the World Masters Games in Australia next October will be a very competitive one, expects organizer Jim Martell.
'VERY STRONG CLUB'
"I think we're going to be a very strong club,' Martell said after this week's organizational meeting -- held exactly a year from when the tournament in Sydney begins early next October.
"They're a great bunch of guys, it's a group that can gel.'
The club currently is comprised of Martell, Thorin Gault, Jason Woodside, David Murphy, Bryan Lamarche, Pat Quinn, Mike Quinn, Frank Marceau, Tom Hutchingame, Randy McGillis, Steve McGillis, Brian O'Neill, Graham Simpson, Chris Nichol and Jason Smith, with organizational assistance from Bob Thompson, the retired former educator at Rothwell-Osnabruck High School. Martell indicated there could be some lineup tweaking, with the possible addition of "one or two more players', but the bulk of the squad that'll compete in the 35-plus division Down Under is already set -- with the per-player registration fee deadline of Oct. 8 met.
"We have 15 players who are committed to this,' Martell said. "It's definitely a first for Cornwall.'
Martell, a veteran on the world championship stage, began talking with local teammates and competitors in the Cornwall men's fastball league about the possibility of sending a local squad overseas about a year ago. Now it's getting close to crunch time, even though the event isn't until Oct. 10-18, 2009, when the team will play 10 games in a whirlwind week of activity.
The fundraising effort is under way. A team flier will be distributed among local businesses, and a series of fundraising events, including barbecues and a murder mystery night, are being planned.
Team members will hold a barbecue at Canadian Tire this weekend, from 10 a. m. to 2 p. m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
The team plans to play in several fastball tournaments next summer to prepare for the event, so getting sponsorship in place over the winter is a priority. "We're looking forward to representing the
community and the country at an incredible event, and we'll be grateful (for sponsors) who play a part in it,' Martell said.

* For more information on the team and its fundraising efforts, contact Martell (613-931- 2255) or Bob Thompson (613-537-8112).

Q & A with Kevin Kammueller
1) Family ? I have been married for 13 years to my wife Astrid. We have 2 daughters, Inga 12 and Greta 2. Plus the extended family of birds, dogs, cats, fish and geckos.
2) Age ? I will be 43 in September.
3) Occupation ? I work as an Actuarial Analyst for United Health Care.
4) Education ? I have B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Minnesota. I have also passed several Actuarial exams, but never finished the exam process.
5) What positions have you held in Fastball ? Have always been just a player. Although I guess I could be thought of as a sponsor as well.
6) How long have you been involved in Fastball ? I didn't start playing Fastpitch until I was in my mid twenties. A friend of mine's dad had throw when he was younger and rounded up the neighborhood kids to make a team. I generally played catcher or outfield. After a couple years I tried my hand at pitching and have pretty much pitched exclusively ever since. Although it took a couple years before anyone got up the courage to get in the batters box and actually let me pitch to them.
7) Other sports / interests you’ve been involved in and accomplishments ? In high school I ran track and cross country. We were the 1983 Minnesota state cross country champions, although I got hurt just before the meet and couldn't compete. Did not compete in sports at all at the collegiate level. Never played organized hockey, but skated all the time as a kid. Tried playing bandy for a couple years but the team folded. Now I just play pick up basketball to stay "in shape" in the off season.
8) What are some of your fastball career highlights & accomplishments ? 2003 NAFA Class "A" Champions (Jeraldine's), I was selected to the First Team All World. 2007 NAFA Masters 40+ East Champions(Jordan Realty) I was selected the MV Pitcher. My team, Jordan Realty, is also the 3 time defending Minnesota State Masters champions and after more than 15 years of trying we finally won the Minnesota State ASA Class "B" championship in 2007. There is no Class "A" or Major ball left in Minnesota, so I guess that makes us the best team in the state for the year. I would have to say that playing with Team Minnesota for 2 years in the AAU tournament in Orlando was another career highlight. Sharing the field with high level ISC players and a few US and Canadian National teams members was an absolute treat for me.
9) Who are some of your favourite teammates / associates and opposing players to play with and against over the years ? Mike Jordan has been a friend, teammate and co-sponsor of the Jordan Realty team since it started back in the late 80's. He and I are the last of the original team members and I can't imagine playing a game without him. Unfortunately I did not start playing fastpitch in Minnesota until the high level leagues, teams and players were all but gone. I have heard many stories about teams like Whitaker Buick, Happy Chef, St Paul Merchants and the like, but never had the pleasure of playing against them or even watching them play for the most part. That said, I have had the privilege of playing with and against some great athletes. I will list a just few. Bobby Heimerl - I hope I came close to spelling that right. One of the best local hitters I ever saw or faced. Aaron Martin - Played with Jordan Realty for a year, but faced him for years in the St. Paul leagues. A true competitor, a real character and a great left-handed hitter. Lucas Goring - I think he got his first hit off me when he was about 14 and is only getting better.Jim Dardine - A Jordan Realty team mate. Our lead off hitter for the past several years and certainly our best big tournament hitter.Dave Marchio - I had to include a right hander in the list. Another one of those hitters you didn't want to face.
Dave Meyers - Still throws the greatest change ups I have ever seen.
Lou Heller - The ageless wonder. Even in his mid 50's he can still strike you out and hit the ball out of the yard.
Team Minnesota - A collection of top rate players and absolute first class guys from top to bottom. By far the best team I will ever have the privilege of playing with.
10) Favourite tournament ? Besides the National tournaments, I would have to say that my favorite tournament to participate in was the Eau Claire tournament. It was an invitational tournament, so I have only played on a few occasions, generally on teams that were called at the last minute to fill out the draw. To be able to watch teams like The Farm, County Concrete, Decatur Pride, Circle Tap, Townline play each other was amazing. To actually play against them was even more fun. We never did very well, in fact we have only won a couple games that I can remember, but it is was always a great time.
In the 1990's the Minnesota State ASA tournament used to be 60+ teams strong. It would start on Friday night and end on Sunday night. Quite a grind.
11) Plans for 2008 & beyond ? I am hoping to make a return to the ISC2 tournament this year. We will definitely be defending out State titles as well as the NAFA Masters title. We made a pathetic showing at the NAFA Worlds last year, but it is being held right in our backyard so we may give it another go. Definitely depends on the dates and at what level we will have to play. Beyond 2008 is hard to say. Our team has become mainly a Masters team and I was the youngest of the bunch. We definitely have a couple more good years under our belts but a lot of the guys have kids that play sports now, wife's reminding us that we aren't getting any younger and other commitments that make staying a competitive team difficult. Hopefully we can ride this wave a little longer.
12) Any additional thoughts ? I feel honored just to be asked to fill out this questionnaire. I have seen links to a couple of these posted on Al Doran's sight and on your website and feel like this might have to be included on the "B" squad. Especially since I am just a lowly Minnesotan! It has been an incredible journey from the early days of just trying to make contact with the ball and the frustrations of trying to learn how to throw a ball underhand, to now competing against some of the best Masters players in the game. I have certainly accomplished far more than I ever thought possible. I have met some wonderful people in my days playing fastpitch and treasure every opportunity I have to put on the cleats and go play the game I love.
.........
Editor's Note : Kevin had an outstanding 2008 summer, his team, Jordan Realty won the Minnesota State Masters tournament for the fourth year in a row, his team also won the Minnesota State ASA Class "B" tournament for the second straight year. Kevin was selected to the All World Team at the NAFA Open tournament. Kevin was also selected to the NAFA Masters East Region World Series All World Team. Kevin was also one of the top pitchers at the ISC II Tournament of Champions.

Fastball 'was his life'
Fastball tourney honours fallen comrade with award
Posted By JORDAN ERCIT, THE NUGGET
Posted 17 mins ago
Roland Williamson never got to shake hands or compare pitching strategies with Rob Gilmore, but he was nonetheless quite honoured" Sunday to be holding a most valuable pitcher award handed out in Gilmore's name.
It's special for sure," said Williamson, the 45-year-old hurler for the Stratford-based Shakespeare Isotopes, winners of the 'A' Division championship Sunday at the World Senior Men's Fastball Tournament at Troy Field -- a 5-1 four-hit victory over the Hamilton Stingers.
Especially when you get to shake the hand of someone in his family, it's
certainly quite the honour."
For the first time in the 22-year history of North Bay's Labour Day fastball tradition, the 'A' and 'AA' c h amp i o n s h i p MVP and most valuable pitcher awards were doled out in the honour of one man --
Gilmore, a former competitor at the tournament in 2000 and 2001 with the Stoney Creek Gators masters' team.
The idea, said tournament volunteer Dave Cerisano, arose when the Gators' Dave Birnie contacted the North Bay Senior Men's Fastball League, the organizers of the tournament. Birnie wondered if the awards could be named in honour of their former teammate, who passed away two years ago at the age of 48 following a battle with cancer.
The league gladly obliged, Cerisano said.
We couldn't have been more honoured," he said.
Friendships formed
Gilmore, who helped steer the Gators to the 2002 Ontario and Eastern Canadian masters' championships, also had more of a connection to North Bay than just a love for wind-milling bullets across the plate during the final long weekend of the summer. He also spent most of his summers at the family cottage in Callander.

Gilmore's widow, Cathy, said her husband would have been honoured to know his love for the game of fastball would be remembered.
It was his life," Cathy Gilmore said of her husband who grew up in the town of Wainfleet, on Ontario's Niagara peninsula.
I think he was still in diapers when he began playing.
But what he enjoyed most about playing masters was the friendships he formed after the games and the guys he met across the province from the various tournaments."
Gilmore may have had one final bit of business to take care of this weekend, though. Compared to the rest of the summer, the weekend weather was perfect for the tournament, making it seem like there may have been some help from above.
We might have had an extra contact up there (in heaven)," she said.

Southern squads sizzle on Sunday
Posted By JORDAN ERCIT, THE NUGGET

Pitching certainly won the day Sunday at the 22-annual World Senior Men's Fastball Tournament.
That and teams from southern Ontario.
Led by the masterful pitching of 41- year-old drop-baller Todd Uhrig, the Cobourg-based Cold Spring Cats won their third World Senior Men's Fastball Tournament in four years, shutting down the Toronto Bingos 3-0 in Sunday's 'AA' Division championship. It was the Cats fourth title overall.
Uhrig, from Elora, Ont., pitched a pair of one-hitters when it counted the most -- the semifinals and final -- Sunday afternoon, mixing in his patented drop ball with some well-placed heat, finishing with 12 strikeouts in the championship game as the tournament's most valuable pitcher in the 'AA' Division.
For Uhrig, it all came down to a breakfast of champions.
A couple of Tim Hortons breakfast sandwiches," he said with a laugh, choosing to forgo the more-conventional bowl of Wheaties.
About all the offence Uhrig needed all came in the top of the third inning, when the Cats capped a three-hit, three-run inning with a line-drive dinger to left field off the bat of tournament MVP Rob Ellis. Uhrig shut down the Bingos the rest of the way after allowing his only hit against in the first two innings.
And despite a couple of complete-game no-hitters, Uhrig's arm was feeling just fine.
My shoulder gets sore, but it's nice weather," he said. So once it gets some use, then it's not too bad."
In the 'A' final, Stratford's Shakespeare Isotopes , who eliminated the Bear Island Braves in the semifinals, scored two runs in both the third and fourth innings as they downed the Hamilton Stingers 5-1. Starting pitcher Roland Williamson pitched a four-hitter and struck out six.
For Williamson, it was his first time competing in North Bay's Labour Day classic. He hopes it won't be the last.

The Mississauga resident, who is originally from Cape Breton, on the northern tip of Nova Scotia, said it is tournaments like this that keep fastball alive in Canada.
It's (fastball) dying in Cape Breton, but they're trying to keep it going," he said while enjoying a post-game beverage while his teammates laughed and traded jokes in the background, some at Williamson's expense.
It's tournament's like this that keep the game going."
Locally, the top finisher in the 'AA' Division was Howard's Plumbing, eliminated in the quarter-finals by the Oshawa Ravens. The Bear Island Braves were the top finishers in the 'A' Division, falling to the Isotopes.
Last year, two local teams swept the championships -- Casey's and Sundridge's Kent Trusses.
In all, 28 teams took part in the four-day tournament.

Pitcher Ken Besner Receives Al Knapp Memorial Award

Besner takes Al Knapp Memorial Trophy
By Chris Dawson

Wednesday, February 20, 2008
One of the North Bay area's top softball pitchers has been named the 2007 winner of the Al Knapp Memorial Trophy for contribution to the sports of softball and baseball.
Ken Besner, who began playing softball as a 13-year-old 32 years ago with the Bonfield 7 Ups of the East Nipissing Fastball League, before continuing up the ladder through the intermediate and oldtimer levels, was recently named winner of the annual award, which honours the memory of longtime softball/fastball great Al Knapp.
During his early years, Besner played several seasons with the 7 Ups, winning a pair of championships, while handling pitching duties and also doing some catching.
After graduating from the ENFL, Besner played for 13 seasons in the Gateway Major Fastball Association with Father's, Kent Trusses, North Bay Merchants and Northern Honda, winning 10 league championships, as well as 10 top pitcher awards.
He was also honoured as the loop's most valuable player on two occasions.
During his time with the Northern Honda, Besner and his teammates also won five Northern Softball Association championships and an Ontario Amateur Softball Association title in 1991, when Besner pitched the North Bay squad to a 2-0 win over Owen Sound in the championship game.
During the 1991 season Northern Honda boasted an impressive 44-4 record, including a perfect 4-0 in the provincial championship.
A year earlier (1990) in Sheddon, Ont., Northern Honda, also in an OASA final reached the championship game before bowing out despite a two-hitter by Besner.
Besner pitched five games during the final day of that tournament and was presented with a "Merit of Achievement Award" by the OASA to honour a player's outstanding performance.
In the 1998 GMFA final, Besner suffered a serious (torn ligaments) bicep injury that prevented him from playing the following season. He was forced to take the next year off, before returning to complete his career.
After concluding his GMFA career, Besner played seven seasons with Overtime Lounge and Casey's of the North Bay Senior's Fastball League (oldtimers), four of which he was eligible to pitch. During that time he compiled a 36-1-1 record while winning four league titles.
During his tenure with Casey's and Overtime, Besner hurled his team to a pair of World Senior's Fastball tournament titles (2003, 2007), compiling a 7-0 record.
Besner will receive the Knapp award at the North Bay Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Dinner at Best Western North Bay, April 26th.

World Senior Men's Fastball Tournament
World fastball tourney hits 22 seasons
Posted By NUGGET STAFF
Posted 2 days ago
North Bay's growing Labour Day weekend tradition continues this week with 28 teams from across Ontario gathering for the 22nd annual World Senior Men's Fastball Tournament.
The tournament, staged at four fields in the city (Troy, Johnson, CFB and Centennial) opens Thursday with action between eight teams from the North Bay Senior Fastball League and continues through Sunday.
The senior fastball tournament, for players aged 35 and over, started in 1987 and has grown to become the largest in the province, with teams coming from places such as Toronto, Oshawa, Hamilton, Peterborough, Sudbury, Scarborough, Lindsay, Stratford, Porquis Junction and Moosonee.
Last year's 'AA' championship was won by North Bay's Casey's, the first local team to win the tournament since 1997.However, several players from the team hung up the cleats after the tournament and Casey's is no longer together.
The Cold Spring Cats, from Cobourg, Ont., the tournament's 'AA' champions in 2005 and 2006,will return seeking another championship.
The Toronto Bingos, who have been travelling north for the over-35 tournament for several years, will feature a big name on the roster for the weekend.
Peter Landers, a legendary left-handed pitcher and member of Softball Canada's Hall of Fame, is joining the Bingos for the weekend.
Locally, Boston Pizza won the regular- season championship in North Bay's nine-team senior league this summer, led by big hitters such as Richard and Ron Gribbons. Other area teams include The Fraser, North Bay Legion, Hopper's, Callander Legion, Howard's Plumbing, Powassan Legion, CFB Silver Foxes, Mattawa Legion, Bear Island Braves and last year's 'A' division champions, Kent Trusses of Sundridge.
The 28 teams will mix together in round robin play, with the Top 14 after the round robin moving on to the 'AA' playoffs and the next 14 playing for the 'A' title.
Playoffs begin Saturday evening, with quarter-finals, semifinals and finals to be played Sunday.
The 'A' championship game goes Sunday at 2:30 p. m. and the 'AA' championship at 4 p. m., both at Troy Field.

Waterloo Classics Win OASA Masters Provincial Championship
Waterloo, Ontario – The Waterloo Classics won the Ontario Amateur Softball Association (OASA) Masters Provincial Fastball Championship with a 6-0 victory over two-time provincial champion Alvinston Indians Sunday (July 20) in Niagara Falls.
The Waterloo team, managed by local fastball enthusiast Sam Forbes, got off to a slow start Friday night, losing 2-1 to the host Niagara Storm’s Fury, but bounced back with a convincing 9-2 victory Saturday afternoon over Aurora Shoeless Joes. With three teams ties at a win and a loss apiece, the tiebreaker rule awarded the Classics first place in their division and a bye into Sunday morning’s semi-final game.
After defeating Waterdown Hammer in their quarterfinal game Saturday night, the Niagara team earned the chance to qualify for the final by meeting the Classics again. This time the Waterloo bats came alive as the 2007 provincial runner-up team won the game handily by a 14-2 score Sunday morning.
The championship game Sunday afternoon was a classic matchup between the two long-time, friendly rivals, Waterloo Classics and Alvinston Indians. Alvinston made it to the championship by defeating Aurora in the other semi-final on Sunday. The Classics prevailed 6-0 behind strong pitching from Todd Uhrig, timely hitting and errorless defense. After playing in the annual tournament for 11 years, it was the Classics first OASA provincial championship.
Each year, OASA presents the Jack Cook award to the Masters player, manager or coach who best exemplifies the sportsmanship, leadership and competitive spirit of Masters fastball in Ontario. Bob Abbott, OASA Executive Vice President, presented the award to Dana Seiling of the Waterloo Classics. It was the third time in four years that a member of the Classics received the award. Sam Forbes (2005) and Jodie Schnarr (2007) were the previous recipients.

Up to 3 underage players (age 35 to 38) in the year of the event who meet the Masters B eligibility guidelines and who are also not carded OASA Intermediate, OASA Senior, NAFA, ORSA, ISC, ASA or ISC II in the current year will be allowed per team. e. They have not played in a NAFA Masters World Series or higher category tournament in the previous 3 years.
Note: The OASA Masters rules were created so all of the teams would have fair criteria to go by for eligibility reference. All teams and players may appeal their eligibility based on their submitted roster. The OASA will only consider appeals that are submitted with a FINAL roster by June 1, 2008 to George Ryder, OASA Men’s Committee Chair. The OASA has final approval on team and player eligibility for their events. Despite the best efforts of the OASA not all players and teams who may be considered ineligible for Masters B play are covered under this list of restrictions.
Appeals
When teams appeal or request information about appeals the OASA may want to consider asking for some of the following information:
1. Give a history of the team, is this an established team or a new team for 2008?
2. Does the team play together in a league or is this an all-star team assembled with pick up players?
3. List any tournaments the team or any of the players have played in during the last 5 years and identify all top 3 finishes.
4. Have you or any of the players won individual awards in league or tournament play?
5. Has the team won any league championships? Include contact information for league president.
6. Identify all pitchers on the roster.

Jordan Realty results from the 2007 NAFA Masters East Region World Series
40 & Over Division
Rockford, Illinois USA
Game 1
Jordan Realty 12(We only have 10 runs marked in the book, but I know we scored 12. I am assuming we were the away team and scored 2 runs in the top of the 5th that did not get marked down)
Bud Illinois 0
WP: Kevin Kammueller
LP: ?????
Doubles: Paul Arntzen, Mike Applegate, Pat Rieger
Triples: Mike Applegate, Jerry Gubash
HR's: Mike Applegate
Mike Applegate 3-3 4RBI's 3 Runs. He also had the game winning RBI in the first inning.
Pat Rieger 1-1, 2BB, 2B, RBI, 2 Runs
Rick Lathrop 1-2, SAC, 2RBI's
Game 2
Jordan Realty 1
Planggers 0
WP: Kevin Kammueller
LP: Bobby Ginger
Doubles: Jimmy Dardine
We had 3 hits, 3 walks, 2 sacrifices and one hit batter.
Paul Arntzen led off the 4th inning with a walk. Mike Applegate reached on an error with Arntzen going to second. Dick Klitzky then reached on a fielders choice, with Mike Applegate out at second base and Paul Arntzen moving to third. Planggers walked Jerry Gubash to load the bases, then Pat Rieger singled in the only run of the game.
Game 3
Jordan Realty 6
Weiners 2
WP: Kevin Kammueller
LP: ??
Doubles: Paul Arntzen
Triples: Mike Applegate
HR's: Mike Applegate
Jimmy Dardine 2-4, 3 SB, Run
Paul Arntzen 2-2, BB, 2B, RBI, 2 Runs
Mike Applegate 2-3, 3B, HR, 4 RBI's, 2 Runs. Had the game winning 3 run HR in the third.
Pat Rieger 2-3, SB
Weiners got both runs in the top of the first and then we took over. 2 runs in the first, 3 in the third and 1 in the fourth.
Game 4
Jordan Realty 6(The Nafa site says 5, but our book has 6)
Goshen 1
WP: Kevin Kammueller
LP: ??
Doubles: Paul Arntzen(2), Mike Applegate
Jimmy Dardine 3-4, Run
Paul Arntzen 2-3, BB, (2)2B, RBI
Pat Rieger 1-1, 2BB, SB, Run
Mike Applegate had already had an MVP performance for us, but was absolutely snake bit in this game. He crushed line drives to left in the first and right in the second. His double in the sixth inning was another rocket at the right fielder that happened to knuckle as it got to him.
Goshen got their run in the top of the first. We came back with five runs in the bottom of the second inning, all with 2 outs. I can not tell from the book who got the game winning hit, but Pat Rieger walked with 2 outs and was followed by singles from Billy Hafner, Rick Lathrop, Sean Dunford and Jim Dardine. Paul Arntzen then capped off the scoring off with a double. Mike Applegate ended the second inning with a screaming line drive to the right fielder.
Game 5
Jordan Realty 1
Planggers 0
WP: Kevin Kammueller
LP: ???
We had 9 hits in the game, all singles. I only remember Planggers having 2 hits, including a lead off single in the seventh. We did make a couple of nice defensive plays as well.
Pat Rieger 1-3, Game winning RBI single in the first inning.
Rick Lathrop 3-3, SB
We scored our run in the first inning again with 2 outs. The first two guys struck out. Mike Applegate singled, Jerry Gubash singled and Pat Rieger singled to drive in Mike Applegate with the winning run. We had a couple of other good scoring chances as well. In the third we had runners on second and third with two out and Pat Rieger grounded out to first base. In the bottom of the sixth with had runners on first and third with two outs and Sean Dunford hit a line drive right to the first baseman.
Planggers got a lead off single in the seventh, sacrificed the runner to second and then had a ground out that advanced the runner to third. Planggers then sent up a pinch hitter who struck out to end the game.
We played really well as a team, only giving up 3 runs in 5 games on the weekend. We had some spectacular individual stats as well.
Jim Dardine 7-16, Double, 4 SB, 4 Runs
Paul Arntzen 6-12, 4 BB, 4 Doubles, 3 RBI's, 5 Runs
Mike Applegate 7-15, BB, 2 Doubles, 2 Triples, 2 HR's, 9 RBI's, SB, 6 Runs
Pat Rieger 6-11, 4 BB, Double, 3 RBI's, 2 SB, 3 Runs
Rick Lathrop 6-10, SAC, 2 RBI's, SB, Run
It probably helped that Jim Dardine, Paul Arntzen and Mike Applegate hit 1-2-3 for us in all 5 games. We beat Planggers 1-0 twice and Pat Rieger drove in the winning run both times.
This team has no corporate sponsor. All league fees, uniforms, pick up player costs and tournament entry fees are paid by Mike Jordan and Kevin Kammueller. Hence the name of the team. All team players pay for their own rooms, food and transportation costs to and from the tournaments. Because of this and the fact that this team has no "ringers" I couldn't have been more proud of the fact that we won this tournament. We like competing against "better" teams and seeing what we can do. We competed out in Portland in the ASA Masters last year for the first time in a National tournament. We faced Planggers in the first round and lost a heart breaker 5-4 and a couple games later lost to Terry Luster and the DeMarini crew 3-0. We played as well as we could both games, but ultimately couldn't pull it out. I guess we just stepped it up a notch this year.

21st ANNUAL WORLD SENIOR MEN’S FASTBALL TOURNAMENT
AUG. 31st, SEPT. 1st, 2nd, 2007 North Bay, Ontario
Casey's comes back for title; Championship win follows dramatic rally in semifinal.
Ken Pagan / The Nugget
Sports - Monday, September 03, 2007
As Hall of Famer Yogi Berra once said, "It ain't over 'til it's over."
With Casey's trailing by six runs and down to their final three outs in the semifinal, many of the 200 fans at Johnson Field left to see the other game at Troy Field - and they missed one of the most exciting comebacks in local fastball annals.
Casey's scored six runs to force extra innings before pulling out a dramatic 12-11 semifinal win over the Oshawa Ravens, leaving enough left in the tank for a 3-1 win over the Porquis Junction KC Trappers to become the first local team in 10 years to win the World Senior Men's Fastball Tournament 'AA' championship.
A few members of Casey's - including pitchers Ken Besner and Mark Schledewitz, catcher Jim Lisk and third baseman Terry Vendetti - also played for the last local team to win, the TCR Bullets, in 1997.
But the odds of Casey's even getting to the final weren't good after they committed five errors and allowed six runs in the top of the fifth inning in the semifinal, handing Oshawa a 10-4 lead.
'Play right to the end'
But Casey's still had three outs to go and there were a lot of guys eager to make up for a bad inning.
"You never give up, not with this batting lineup," Besner said. "We had really good sticks all weekend and the guys were hitting well, so you've got to play right to the end."
Lisk smashed a two-run homer with none out.
Three batters later, left-fielder Luc 'Red' Gagnon made amends for a couple of earlier mistakes with another monster shot over the centre-field fence.
Second baseman Reg Reichstein, who was drilled on the hand by a pitch, later came around to score and send the game to extra innings.
After the Ravens went up 11-10 in the top of the sixth, speedy centre-fielder Bill Reid of Casey's drove home Vendetti for the tying run and Reid came around to score the winning run on Lisk's lined shot into the gap to cap the dramatic comeback.
"We were down six runs (in the fifth), but we had the top of the order coming up and all you have to do is get a couple runners on - we had a couple of home runs and we were right back in it," Lisk said. "That was probably one of the best games I've ever played in." The Porquis Junction KC Trappers, led by hard-throwing pitcher Frank Kujawinski, knocked off the two-time defending champion Cold Spring Cats in the other semifinal.
But Casey's, the North Bay Senior Men's Fastball League champions, carried their semifinal momentum into the championship game.
In the second inning, seeing his first pitch of the game, Gagnon crushed another long home run to centre-field to give Casey's a 1-0 lead.
Leading off the third inning, Casey's shortstop Ed Roy uncoiled like Reggie Jackson and crushed the first pitch over the right-centre field fence for a 2-0 lead. The next batter, Reid, followed with a triple and came around to score on Lisk's single.
The Trappers answered in the top of the fourth when Pete Barber had his second hit to drive in Mike Bourgeois, but Besner dug deep to grind out the final five outs - he surrendered a couple lined rockets in the fifth, but one was snared by Vendetti at third base and the other by Gagnon in left field.
Besner, named most valuable player of the championship game, pitched six of the seven games on the weekend - including all four in the playoffs after Schledewitz, who was picked up to provide some weekend relief, injured a hamstring Friday.
"If Sledge would have been able to keep pitching, we would have been in really good shape, but after you get going, you don't feel it too much," Besner said of the weekend workload.
Both Besner and Lisk, who have played together for more than 20 years, credited some weekend additions to the lineup for helping put Casey's over the top.
"This year, we picked up a couple of guys - Serge Violette at first base and Eddie Roy (who usually plays with a Garson team in tournaments) at shortstop - so that really helped us defensively and offensively," Besner said. "And our team was already close, so I think it just all came together."
"We brought Schledewitz out of retirement to throw a few innings to help Kenny stay fresh and it was appreciated," Lisk said. "Kenny was (fading) at the end, but those extra innings helped us a lot."
Kent Trusses 8, Peterborough 4
In the 32-team tournament's 'A' division final, Kent Trusses from South River made it a regional sweep with an 8-4 win over the defending 'A' division champions from Peterborough.
Don Folliott, named most valuable player in the championship game, had a two-run triple that broke the game open, while Darryl Percival also had two hits and two RBIs. Pitcher Steve Attwell, who combined on the mound with Folliot during the weekend's seven games, earned the win in the final game.
"I think it was a real team effort," said team captain Eldy MacIntosh, one of five members of the South River team who have played together since 1979. "Don (Folliot) logged a lot of innings, he's our horse. But he knows when he runs out of gas and we were able to save Steve (Attwell) for when it counted in this game."
The South River team no longer plays regularly in a league, instead getting together for weekly practices and playing three tournaments each summer.
But they play hard, evidenced by a takeout slide at second base which knocked down the Farquhar Chrysler shortstop and broke up a double play in the quarter-final, Sunday morning.
"For us, playing seven games is pretty tough, so it was huge - the guys gave a great effort," MacIntosh said. "I really have to commend the guys, because when you only practise, it's tough. It's not the same as playing games."
Smith named honorary chairman
Longtime local fastball supporter Karl Smith served as honorary chairman for the 2007 tournament.
Smith, who plays with Farquhar Chrysler, was a founding member of the North Bay Senior Fastball league and has been in all 21 world tournaments as well as 27 CFB Silver Fox tournaments.
Earlier this season, Smith took a line drive on the shin that later became infected and left him on crutches for much of the summer. But he made a return to the plate in Friday's feature game, helping Farquhar Chrysler to a 7-0 win over the Hamilton Pirates.

North Bay Umpire Lui Ricci
Crouching for love of the game; Ricci in 31st year of calling North Bay balls and strikes
- Saturday, September 01, 2007 @ 08:00
He's been right in the thick of things with all the best ballplayers in North Bay for the past 30 years, but he's never swung a bat or fielded a ball.
Still, nobody has seen North Bay's best hitters and pitchers over the years the way Lui Ricci has from behind home plate.
Ricci, 44, is in his 31st year of umpiring local baseball/fastball and he's still going strong - working 16 games this weekend during the World Senior Men's fastball tournament, in fact.
He started umpiring hardball as a 13-year-old in 1977 and when umpires Wally Patterson and Darryl Laxton needed another official for a Gateway Major Fastball Association tournament, they coaxed the 13-year-old into working the bases.
He soon began working games behind the plate and never looked back - although it was intimidating at first.
"I remember doing a game between the Merchants and Mr. Transmission and Don Grierson was the batter," Ricci says of one of his first games. "He'd always let the first couple pitches go by and I remember calling a strike like Leslie Nielsen in The Naked Gun - 'Strike?' - and he'd look back and shake his head.
"But that gave me confidence, calling strikes with guys like Don Grierson at bat."
There were also times third base coaches such as the late Ron Duffy would come and question a call.
"He was something like six-foot-six and it was like I was looking up to the friendly giant," says Ricci, who stands five-foot-two. "It was intimidating, but afterwards, they'd say, 'Good game, ump' and from then on it was awesome."
When Ricci first started behind the plate in 1977, he wore only a mask and soccer shin pads - not the inflatable chest and neck pads that umpires are equipped with today.
"I don't know how we did it," he says, noting he still regularly takes foul balls off the wrists, shoulders, legs and other body parts.
Youth baseball and fastball participation in North Bay has dwindled from when he first started, but Ricci still holds down a schedule that has him on a field five nights a week with ladies and senior men's fastball or senior baseball.
Umpiring can be a thankless job - with any call, half the players on the field and half the fans might suggest new prescription eyeglasses.
But even after 30 years, Ricci loves coming to the park every night. "It's enthusiasm," says Ricci, who has also coached local hockey for 30 years, starting as a teenager because he was "too small" as a player.
"If you're enthusiastic, you'll be respected by the players. If they have a question, they can come talk to the umpire and we'll give you an answer back. It's all about respect.
"That comes with experience. If you're umpiring every night and the players know how you umpire, you'll get that respect. If you show hustle on and off the field as an umpire, the ballplayers will, too. If you don't show that, the ballplayers will think, 'Ah, the umpire doesn't care.'"
Ricci also isn't shy to come clean about something North Bay players might have suspected at one time or another over the years - yes, he has missed a call.
'We're not perfect'
In one instance, Ricci called a runner out on second on what he mistakenly thought was a force play, but the runner should have been safe because no tag was applied.
"I remember saying, 'Geez, I blew the call' so they put the game under protest and we had to play the whole game over from there on. "Hey, it happens. We're not perfect."
It's how he deals with the questionable calls and the sometimes-friendly taunts that has helped him survive 30 years and enables him to keep showing up with a smile on his face.
"I hear it all the time," he says of the heckling, usually good-natured. "They'll say, 'Hey umpie, stand up' (a crack at his vertically challenged stature) and I just chuckle. You have to give them a little smile.
"Because really, what are we here for? I'm here because I want to be around the ballplayers. I never played baseball, but here's my chance to give something back. You have to like the game. That's the bottom line."
The heckling they can handle, but the biggest problem umpires are facing is there are not enough of them.
"Boy, oh boy, do we need help," says Ricci, who won the Al Knapp Award for contribution to North Bay baseball in 1999.
There are few up-and-coming umpires getting involved, leaving veterans stretched to meet demand from various leagues.
"We're always scrambling," says Angie Cerisano, umpire-in-chief for both the senior men's fastball league and Softball Ontario's Zone 11.
Cerisano says there are eight to 12 senior men's fastball umpires through the season, but some nights are a stretch with various leagues playing at the same time.
Often, new umpires are former players looking to stay involved, rather than up-and-coming youngsters.
"I don't know whether it's the frustration from players, coaches or fans getting on umpires or whether it's a time factor - a lot of kids have other things to do these days," Cerisano says, noting it's a concern associations are dealing with throughout Ontario.
Cerisano started umpiring hardball in 1991, and was lured to fastball six years ago when Ricci came calling.
"We enjoy doing games together, because we both do it for the simple fact that we enjoy umpiring," Cerisano says. "It's not for the money, or anything else - we enjoy the game."
For Ricci and Cerisano, the adventure continues this weekend with the 32-team senior men's fastball tournament, for which 14 umpires have been enlisted, including four from Sudbury and one from Sault Ste. Marie.
Over the years, Ricci has seen first-hand the best players and teams, having worked a dozen provincial championship events. He watched the Fraser Tavern win provincial fastball championships in the 1980s and the King and His Court visit twice for exhibitions - Ricci even hosted a visiting team of bantam hardball players from Italy in the 1980s and showed them the hot Italian spots around North Bay.
"There's been some fantastic ball," Ricci says. "If my health is good, and I'm still enthusiastic and love it, I hope to do this another 20 years."
21st Annual World Senior Men's Tourney - Preview
The Cold Spring Cats, from Cobourg, Ont., will be back in North Bay this weekend seeking their third consecutive championship during the 21st annual World Senior Men's fastball tournament.
The 32-team tournament opens Thursday evening with games at Troy and Johnson Fields involving local teams, with most of the out-of-town teams getting underway Friday.
This year's event has attracted teams from places such as Sudbury, Toronto, Hamilton, Oshawa, Peterborough and Cobourg, home of the two-time defending champion Cats.
A year ago, the Cold Spring squad won the 'AA' championship with a 3-1 win over the Azilda Doghouse Relics.
Casey's top local team
The top team in North Bay this season is Casey's, led by veteran pitcher Ken Besner, which finished the regular season with a 16-1-1 record and swept to the league championship in the playoffs.
Casey's won the tournament's 'A' division in 2005.
The tournament is hosted by the North Bay Senior Men's fastball League, a 10-team loop featuring players aged 35 and over (pitchers must be 40 and over).
Two seasons ago, the North Bay league introduced a "developmental" player rule, allowing two players per team under age 35 with little fastball experience, to play.
The tournament started in 1987 with 16 teams, mostly from within the region.
Waiting list
Teams from throughout the province soon began making their way to North Bay and the tournament has doubled in size, with a waiting list again this year.
Games will be played this weekend at Troy, Johnson, CFB and Centennial Fields.
Opening ceremonies will be held Friday at 7 p.m. at Troy Field, at which point this year's honorary tournament chairman will be announced.
Championship games are slated for Sunday at Troy Field. The 'A' championship goes at 2:30 p.m. and the 'AA' championship is scheduled for 4 p.m.

2007 NAFA Masters World Series - Age Requirements & Qualifying
Age Requirements & Qualifying
The NAFA Masters World Series invites all Masters teams to play without qualifying. The age requirement is that anyone turning the age of the class you want to play in that year is eligible, i. e. anyone turning 35 at any time in 2007 can play 35, anyone turning 50 in 2007 at anytime can play 50. The Second rule of age requirements to promote equality in this program is that all pitchers must meet the above age test.
In addition, Each team in the 35-Over class is allowed to bring 3 position (non-pitching) players that are 3 years too young (i.e. turn 32 in this calendar year),
Each 40-over team is allowed 3 position players that are 3 years too young (i.e. turn 37 in this calendar year),
Each 45-over team is allowed 3 position players that are 3 years too young (i.e. turn 42 in this calendar year),
Each 50-over team is allowed 3 position players that are 3 years too young (i.e. turn 47 in this calendar year). There are no pitcher or team classifications at this time.

Stoney Creek Gator's player loses battle with Cancer
Pitcher Rob Gilmore passed away back in September. Gilley battled cancer and fought long and hard and passed away at his home with his wife by his side.
Gilley pitched for the Stoney Creek Gators masters in 2002 where he
helped them win both the Ontario and Eastern Canadian Masters Championships.
Gilley also pitched for the Dunnville Rolling Thunder Arrows in the Erie League.
Gilley was voted top pitcher in the Erie League in 2000.
Gilley was a crafty pitcher who possessed a nasty pitch that was a combination change-up / drop ball.
Most important, Gilley was a great man !
