CIF Swimming (2008)

AOLP 8th at CIF

The highlight of the day was Haley Ferrer's ('11) CIF win and school record in the 100 Freestyle.  Haley was also runner-up in the 50 Freestyle.  Individual scoring also came from Colleen Patton ('08) (500 Fr - 11th), Elyse Witt (100 Bk - 11th), and Holly Belasco (100 Fly - 10th).  The ladies also placed two relays in the top six, finishing the meet with a season best 400 Freestyle Relay time.  Although they will lose Senior points in the individual events and will lose a lot of relay legs to exiting Seniors, the Pilots have a lot of potential in the underclasses.  We expect OLP to sustain or improve their performance on the all three relays, with particular emphasis on getting the 200 Medley Relay under 2:00.  With some CIF points from OLP divers expected next year, the ladies should be able to improve upon their 8th place CIF finish and will continue to drive towards the elusive top two City Conference finish.

Saints posts top CIF Swimming team finish in school history

The Saintsmen entered the CIF finals with 26 points from the divers - Chris Ackman (3rd), Nico Espinosa (6th) and Daniel Marks (8th) - and seeding that placed the team in third place and within striking distance of the leaders - defending CIF champion Mount Carmel and City Conference champion La Jolla.  The deficit was such that Saints needed to be perfect and needed to pull off a couple of upsets if it was going to overtake one or both of the top two seeds.

During the season, Saints 200 Free Relay had hovered in the 1:32 range and turned in a stellar performance at the City Conference finals to establish a team mark of 1:30.39.  La Jolla had turned in a dominating City performance with a 1:28.61 that left the field, literally, in its wake.  The season best 50 times of Pete Giacalone (22.6) ('08), Ian Heacox (22.6) ('08), Max Kathol (22.9) ('08), and Clay Christy (21.7) ('09) didn't look very competitive.  At best, it appeared that the boys would be able to break 1:30.  They new that something big needed to happen for the tide of the team scoring to begin to turn in their favor, and something big did happen - a new Saints 200 Freestyle relay record of 1:28.94, but it wasn't quite enough.

That was the story of CIF finals for the boys, swimming maginificently performance after performance with Mount Carmel and La Jolla doing just enough to prevent the big breakthrough.  Other performances of note:  200 Medley Relay - Team Record - Paul Guzman ('09), Neil Heacox ('08), Pete (fastest fly split in DI or DII), Sean Glass ('10) 400 Free Relay - Team Record - Clay, Sean, Paul, Ian.

100 Backstroke - Team Record - Paul

Clay also placed 2nd in the 200 Freestyle and Derek Snyder ('11) and Ian Heacox ('08) delivered individual points as well.   With all individual points returning except for Chris (3rd in diving) and Ian (12th), the team should be in position to make another run at the CIF Championship next year.

Saturday, May 19
CIF Swimming (2007)
OLP placed 5th at the 2007 CIF Swimming and Diving Championships, matching the school high 5th place finish of 1999. Saints, likewise, matched the school high 6th place finish from 1984 (Saints does have a CIF Championship in the "C" Division on record from 1968, a no longer contested Freshman/Sophomore Championship).

The girl's 200 Medley Relay of Elyse Witt, Valerie Alanis, Holly Belasco, and Nicola Carlson established the tone for the day with a team record (1:56.16) and a third place finish.

Clay Christy swam an exciting final to finish second in the 200 Free posting an impressive 1:45.58. A sophomore, Clay has two more years to tackle what now stands as the 2nd oldest record on the books - Saints Hall of Famer Robert Clearlys 1982 1:41.90 effort. Incidentally, Clay broke the oldest standing Saints Record on Saturday, lowering Tony Ciccheto's 1980 100 Free mark of 49.89 to 49.00 with a 4th place finish.

Paul Guzman is another Saintsman with a couple more years to take down a Robert Cleary record - Robert Clearys 4:36.23 500 Free (1983). Paul moved up from his 6th seed into the 2nd position with a mildly surprising 4:49.57. With little time to recover, Paul returned for the 100 backstroke, and did capture a team record, lowering the previous mark of 57.40 to 56.87.

Valerie Alanis broke her own record in the 500 Freestyle, lowering last years 5:11 mark by 5 seconds with a 5:06.61 in Wednesdays prelims. She matched her prelim time with a 5:06.72 and a third place finish. Valerie also won the consolation heat of the girls 100 Breastroke.

The boys relays lowered both team records, one just a few weeks old, the other less than 72 hours old. Clay Christy, Sean Glass, Ian Heacox, and Calvin Wessman made the finals of the 200 Free with a team record 1:32.80 on Wednesday evening. Saturday's relay, with Peter Giacalone substituting for Sean Glass so that Sean could focus on the 100 Back consoles, lowered the record to 1:32.36. The day was capped for the boys with an impressive 400 Free relay, shattering the record that was set at the Cathedral meet earlier in the season. Clay Christy, Peter Giacalone, Paul Guzman, and Ian Heacox lowered the mark from 3:26.62 to 3:21.82!

The girls freestyle relays didn't set any records but were very good nonetheless. The girls 200 Free Relay of Cecilia Dominguez, Nikki Larsen, Jenn Shaw (in her final high school swim), and Elyse Witt swam to within one second of the school record. Their time of 1:47.79 exceeded Coach Manley's expectations by nearly 1.5 seconds. The 400 Free Relay of Maggie Adema, Valerie, Nicola, and Elyse finally bettered their mark from the first meet of the season, coming in with a 3:51 and a 2nd place console finish to secure their 5th place team finish over fast approaching 6th place West Hills.
