WHAT ARE TRYOUTS ?
One of the most often ask questions is “what are tryouts and why are they necessary?”
Tryouts as they are called are really skills evaluations. These evaluations are the way that the coaching staff of RLL check the Little League players’ abilities so they will be placed in the division that best matches their skill level. Furthermore, Players are evaluated and assigned a score in several skill areas. These scores are used during the draft to help coaches place players appropriately. Skills evaluations are mandatory for all players 5 through 12. These evaluations are not meant to put any player in a high pressure situation, but simply give an idea of what each player is capable of doing.
Each player’s scores are confidential and cannot be shared with players or parents.
Players should begin preparing for evaluations at least a week in advance by throwing, catching, and swinging a bat.
On the day of evaluations, players should wear appropriate clothing, including running shoes or cleats; and have their own baseball glove. When players arrive at the evaluation, they will check in at the registration desk where they will be assigned a numbered tag.
Coaches will use the number to track the evaluations and players will use the tag to keep track of each station they need to visit. Before proceeding to the first station, players should stretch and warm up. It should take an hour or more for a player to visit all stations.
Managers and coaches will base their evaluation of players at each station by comparing each player to all other players who have visited that station. The stations are as follows:
Running: Each player will run a standard distance and the time will be recorded.
Infielding: Each player will field several ground balls and then throw to 1st base. Approach, hands, footwork, lateral movement, transition to throwing, and speed and accuracy of throws will be evaluated. Arm strength will also be evaluated here.
Outfielding: Each player will field several fly balls and / or base hits in the outfield. Glove position, catching skills, and fly ball judgment will be assessed.
Hitting: Each player will hit several balls pitched by a coach or a pitching machine. Bat speed, hitting technique, contact, and power will all be assessed.
Pitching (optional): Each player who chooses to visit the pitching station will make several pitches to a catcher. Arm strength, balance, and basic pitching mechanics will be assessed.
Catching (optional): Each player who chooses to visit the catching station will catch several pitches thrown by another player or coach. Shifting, blocking, receiving, framing, and quickness will be assessed.
