Mie March 25th: Oni vs. Taketa Hohshu
The Oni traveled to Mie Machi for a matchup against a very young and very fit Taketa Hohshu team. The Oni should have expected that it would not be their day from the very start when team capt. Tomas was informed that the field was not reserved for our match. After a few phone calls (and most undoubtedly some greasing of palms), we were cleared to play.
Taketa Hohshu started out strong from the get go, surprising the Oni with continued pressure and were rewarded with an early goal. The Oni regrouped and put together some of their own offensive attack fueled by the precision passing of midfielders Luca, Mike Collins, and new acquisitions Kei and Che. Along with the "Towers of Power" Tomas and Mike Harris up front, our team managed a few prime scoring chances, finally denting the back of the net late in the first half with a drive off of Tomas' foot.
The second half had the Oni create some more scoring opportunities, but every shot seemed aimed at a red target, that being the red jersey of the Hohshu goalkeeper. However, speed can kill and mix that with some stamina and you have an even more lethal mixture. Just what Hohshu had mixed up for the Oni on this day. They finally subdued the Oni in the second half with just this concoction, shutting out the potent Oni offense on one end and then hustling upfield, leaving the Oni D of Issa, Daisuke, Sam, Kim, and Zach many times shaking their heads thinking they were seeing double.
Taketa tacked on two more goals in the second half to put the game away; the game-winner being the classic case of student showing up sensei as one Hohshu player lithely hurdled an intended tackle by Sam (his English ALT in Taketa), headed towards goal, and then adeptly placed a shot under diving goalkeeper Will. Overall a well-played match by both teams and a well-deserved win for Hohshu.
Also a warm welcome to first time Oni players Sam (UK), Zach (US), Kei (Japan), Che and Kim (Korea).

Liebe-Liebe Kranz in Notsuharu July 31st
For the first time in Oni's history we were to play against a ladies soccer team 'Liebe kranz' along with their male counterparts 'Liebe', both of the Oita City area, at Notsuharu Soccer Ground on June 31st. Before the game our task looked daunting as we saw our opposition warming up in their slick uniforms and then realised we only had 6 players!
We ended up borrowing some of Liebe Kranz to play the first half of our game against the men's team Liebe. Oni got off to a lightning start after a few minutes when Tomas played a slick one-two with 14 year-old Rika left of goal, then dribbling a bit before shooting a low left-footed shot from the egde of the box which beat the diving keeper and went in off the right post.
Oni clearly had the most chances in the first half as first Tomas controlled a long throw-in from Leighton into the box and booted high past the keeper from one yard. Then Rika collected the ball on the left but far from goal, dribbled into the box before beating the keeper at his near post to score a fine goal.
Fortunately by half-time most of our other players had arrived so we could start the second half with a full team. The second half was a different story though as Liebe controlled the midfield with nice passing. However they found it hard to get past our defensive giants Matt, Stacy, Daisuke and Joanne and Oni continued to break down the Liebe defense with good running from Leighton on his debut, along with Bob and Yasu in midfield, and Matt who made the odd burst from defence.
Matt, Leighton and Leroy all went close before Leighton set Tomas up for a right footed shot from outide the box which floated into the top right-hand corner.
Thanks to everyone for a great game and welcome to Leighton who made his debut.
Well played to Matt 'n Stacy for whom this was the last game for Oita Oni. They are undoubtedly the main reason for our impressive goal-against record over the 2 years they've played for us. Thanks for everything guys!

Heat and Youth in Tsukumi July 17th
There's a first time for everything as they say and we took on a Senior High School Soccer Team for the first time on July 17th in the seaside city of Tsukumi. We ended up borrowing a few players from a local team called Yamamoto Kai which we hope to play in the near future.
We played 3 20 minute periods on a day of blistering heat. At the end of the first it remained scoreless as both teams enjoyed a few good chances. In the second period Tomas opened the scoring when he slotted the ball past the keeper after it broke it the box. However ten minutes later the students' passing on the left wing allowed them to score past Will in our goal. 1-1 at the end of the second period.
In the final period both teams created scoring chances but oni just couldn't make that final pass connect. A few minutes before the ed the students managed to get one more goal past Will to secure their victory as they then pulled all men behind the ball and defended valiantly. We did well considering the youth and fitness of our opponents and the considerable heat of the day!!

Unbeaten in Mie Town June 12th
We took on our old rivals Godo newspaper and played Mirai Shinyoh Kinkoh for the first time on June 12th at the Community Athletic Grounds in Mie machi.
As always Matt and Stacy were like rocks in defence but the big star of the day was Matt's cousin Daniel who was on a visit from America.
In the first game against the journalists we had the majority of the chances but couldn't score until Daniel went on a dribble down the left wing, passing the defenders and slotting the ball past the goalkeeper. Final score 1-0.
In the game against Mirai Shinyoh Kinkoh (Future Trust Bank) we opened up a 2 goal lead, then missed a penalty before our opponents managed to pull a goal back. The last few minutes were nailbiting as Mirai threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Oni goal. Fortunately we survived to pull off a fine victory.
Thanks to everyone who turned up: Matt Stacy Steven Kerron Bob Leroy Daniel Tomas Daisuke
Finally welcome to Steven who made a fine debut at cornerback.

Kyushu Cup
Yamakuni was the picturesque location for 2005's Kyushu Cup. Although not all Kyushu was represented, teams from Nagasaki, Oita, Fukuoka and Saga battled it out for the prestigious prize. Oni played quite well with our team made up of a limited number of regular players supplemented by some newbies especially recruited for the day.
Our first game against Nagasaki was very much a see-saw game. We took the lead early on when Adam spotted the goalie out of position. However Nagasaki exposed our make-shift defence with 3 goals within a short period, 3-1 at half time. The second half began with Adam scoring from the acutest of angles inside the box on the left of goal after playing a defence-splitting one-two with Tomas. Soon after this Tomas slotted a free-kick in the bottom left-hand corner after Kerron was blatantly fouled 25 yards from goal, 3-3. Nagasaki then took the lead again before Tomas scored a second free kick from a similar position, 4-4. The game was decided with nice passing on the left wing, Adam setting up Tomas for a left footed volley from 20 yards that just curved inside the right post.
Saga took the lead in our next game. We equalised with well worked passing involving several players to set up Adam to slot past the keeper into the bottom left corner. Saga again took the lead, we then equalised again.
Our final game proved a bit of a mismatch with Fukuoka ending up winners and best team on the day.
Well played to everyone!

1st game of 2005 : Freaked out again?!
Mie's Oharu ground was the venue for our first action (and exercise?) of 2005, a 4 team tournament involving Freaks(Mie), Hohshu(Taketa) and the Cracks(Oita). Hohshu, who had a very young team, looked impressive in the first game, beating Freaks with two well worked goals. In the second game Oni beat Cracks for the first time in a while, exposing the vulnerable Cracked defence. The fourth and final game of the involved ourselves and the Freaks. Freaks pulled away with a 2-goal lead and while we did pulled one goal back the all-important equalizer just wouldn't go in.
Due to a lack of time we couldn't play the Hohshu team.

Back to Winning Ways
Oni came away with one win and one loss at Anyohji Fureai Ground in Hiji Town yesterday November 7th. Our own Michi's Shin Tsurukai Kohsan (S.T.K.) and Sony Semi-Conductors Kyushu (S.C.K.), both company teams, made up the opposition.
In the first half against SCK we controlled the game for long periods but couldn't find the back of net, the most memorable moment of the half being when Leroy's crackshot headed for the top right-hand corner was expertly tipped away for a corner by the SCK netminder.
The second half was a tighter affair with fewer chances, the game eventually being decided by a dubious referee decision when our keeper Audrius seemed to fairly claim the ball while slightly clashing with the opponent. The resulting penalty kick proved to be the only goal of the game.
In the second game Michi was a friend turned foe for a while at least as we took on his company team in a game in which we played our best in a long time. With fluid passing in midfield we were able to create numerous scoring chances. For the first goal slick passing split open the STK defence to catch the goalkeeper out of position for Tomas to tap in. In the second half a pass from(long time no see!) Adam set up Tomas to dribble past one defender and cut inside another before scoring with a low shot into the bottom-right corner. The third goal came when Adam coolly rounded the keeper to slot the ball into the empty net. The final nail in the STK coffin came when a dribble and shot from Leroy saw the defender hit the ball off his own post in an attempt to clear. The rebound fell to Tomas who finished from close-range to complete his hat-trick.
Stacy was undoubtedly our best player of the day in a defence which was rock solid throughout both games.
Welcome back to Adam and Kuni who joined us after a few months' sabbatical.
Finally thanks to Audrius and Gabriel for getting us the free curry after the game. It was very welcome!

SÞ¡ Back to the Drawing Board
On Sunday 17th October we played a night game against Oita Godo Newspaper's outfit, Giornale, on a dirt pitch in Oita City. Although we had comprehensively won previous encounters between the sides and thus had reason to be confident, this was to be the journalists' night all over the pitch. Oni found it hard to adjust to the rock-hard surface and just had the bare eleven while our tactically superior opponents seemed to change their team for each one of the four 20 min. periods. We were especially found wanting in the air, with four of the five goals conceded coming from headers. However we did make several chances, some of which might have gone in had the crossbar been about 20 feet higher! Everyone was delighted when Leroy neatly tucked away a right-footed effort for a more than deserved consolation goal. Hopefully we can get a better turnout for the next game.

Better late than never?
We had a four team tournament in Mie Town Sunday September 26th. Freaks, a local team, Cracks from Oita University and Beppu University Soccer Club made up the opposition. Our first game against Freaks was a close game although our attack was ineffective as we tried to channel everything through the middle. We lost one-nil. Our second game against our old rivals Cracks finished stalemate although either side could have won. In the third game we took on Beppu University. Our defence was rock solid but we still couldn't find the net as the game finished in our second goalless draw of the day. We finally found our form in the fourth and final game against the same opposition, with our supreme defence rendering the Beppu attack helpless. Our first goal of the day was superbly sidefooted into the corner of the net by Bogie. This was later added to with a late Tomas tap-in which came from Daisuke's excellent work on the right wing. It would be fair to say that we started poorly but finished strongly, in the end beating the team that beat the team that beat us...check for yourself!
Here are the results of the day:
Beppu Uni. 2 0 Cracks

Surprise Game in Benten
What was supposed to be a kickaround among ourselves turned into three 20 minute games in Benten Machi, Oita City yesterday September 12. In the first game we had some good passing and beat a student team with two goals from Leroy and Tomas. The second game got off to a blistering start when Aussie wonder-signing Rob Cleary more than made up for his late arrival by scoring from a solo run on his debut. A second goal was added when the goalkeeper was caught off his line by a long-range looping shot from Tomas. Despite conceding a goal we held on for a deserved 2:1 win. As some Oni had to leave early, in the last game we borrowed some players and took on the student outfit for a second time. This game was a sticky affair, with incessant rain turning the playing surface into a mudbath. As we found it difficult to keep possession, our defence was under pressure for long periods with numerous last-ditch tackles required. Relying on the counterattack, our account was opened with a left-footed effort by Tomas which was later added to when Ryo kicked a broken ball to the net. Although the students did pull one goal back, we held on for a well-earned victory in what were terrible playing conditions.
Results: 2:0, 2:1, 2:1

Torrential Ono
Ok, it wasn't that bad but Oni played well against what was a strong breeze and two very difficult opponents on Sunday, July 4th at Ono Town General Sports Ground.
Our first game against Oita University's "Cracks" was stalemate until we conceded a goal at the start of the 2nd half. We then threw everything but the kitchen sink at the students' goal but despite hitting the post, couldn't get the all important equaliser.
In the second game against Oita Godo Newspaper's outfit "Giornale", it was scoreless until we broke down the journalist's defence with some slick passing, creating numerous goal chances and wound up putting 3 past Giornale's affable keeper, Ken-chan.
Well played to everyone who made the trip.

Ben's Last Game
We made the trip to Haki town, Fukuoka on Saturday January 31st to take part in the Kyushu Cup. With teams from Fukuoka, Kitakyushu, Nagasaki, Saga and Oita taking part it was a good opportunity to mingle with people from all over Kyushu. In the first game we beat Saga comprehensively but narrowly lost to a well-organised Kitakyushu unit in the semi final. On a sad note for Oni, we'd like to say otsukaresama to Ben, who will be leaving the prefecture this month.
All the best of luck in the future Ben(who didn't actually take part in his last game!!)!
