SWARM Battles Back to Claim Runner-Up Spot at Whitehall !
The Ohio SWARM 18U Fastpitch softball team opened up the 2009 season at the Whitehall Invitational last weekend. Knocked into the losers bracket early on Sunday by the eventual tournament winner, the SWARM made a dramatic comeback, playing six games in a row and eventually defeating the winner’s bracket champion by a score of 1-0. This forced the tournament into a 2nd championship game which was tied at 6-6 going into the bottom of the final inning of the contest. The SWARM gave up a run in the final frame to drop a 7-6 decision to the Rebels (Orahood) and claim 2nd Place in the tourney with a 5-2-1 record. Ohio SWARM – 0 Rebels (Thomas) – 0 The tournament opened Friday evening with a the SWARM registering a 0-0 tie vs the Rebels (Thomas) team. SWARM bats were cold -only Lindsey Pennell (2 for 2) had success at the plate. Still, Marysville hurler Chelsea Burns shut down the Rebels for 3 innings, allowing only one hit and striking out three. She was relieved by North Union pitcher Maggie McMahan who allowed no hits and struck out six in the final three frames. Ohio SWARM – 3 Turbos - 1 Game two saw the SWARM jump out to an early lead as Marysville graduate Casey Clarridge singled to begin the game and later scored on a fielders choice. The SWARM made it 2-0 in the fifth as North Union’s Samantha Rouse singled and later scored on a hit by Chelsea Burns. Marysville’s Paige Thompson drove in another run in the 6th inning while Marysville hurler Lindsey Hershberger went four innings on the mound, holding the Turbos hitless. McMahan finished up the final two innings, striking out three.
Rebels (Orahood) - 3 Ohio SWARM – 1 Sunday at 8 am the SWARM took on the Rebels in an old-fashioned pitchers duel. Maggie McMahan held the high powered Rebels offense scoreless for four innings. Paige Thompson blasted a triple to begin the fifth inning and scored on a single by Marysville catcher Paige Westfall, giving the SWARM a 1-0 lead. The Rebels tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, then added two runs in the sixth to claim the win. Paige Thompson and Westland’s Hailee Johnson lead the SWARM offense with two hits each. The loss threw the SWARM in the tournament Loser’s Bracket. Ohio SWARM – 9 Cardinal Crush – 3 SWARM bats began to heat up as they handed the Cardinal Crush a 9-3 loss. Marysville’s Shelby Allmon recorded two hits and Clarridge added two more.Rouse, Beasy, Thompson, Westfall, and Burns also hit safely while Jonathan Alder’s Jacquelene Justus laid down a perfect, two strike suicide squeeze bunt to plate a run.Chelsea Burns earned the win on the mound, pitching a complete game while giving up only two earned runs. Ohio SWARM – 8 Rebels (Thomas) - 3 The offense continued to roll as the SWARM took on the Rebels in a rematch of game one. The SWARM banged out twelve hits including three by Hailee Johnson and two each by Paige Thompson and Casey Clarridge. SWARM pitchers Lindsey Hershberger and Maggie McMahan held the Rebels to five hits and only two earned runs in the win. Ohio SWARM – 7 SWARM (Orange) - 0 Game six was the Championship Game for the loser’s bracket and featured a first time match-up between the two local SWARM teams. Maggie McMahan was masterful in the circle allowing only two hits and striking out six to earn the victory. The SWARM jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Casey Clarridge and Samantha Rouse both singled then scored on a double to center by Paige Thompson. The SWARM added four more runs in the second inning as Allmon, Clarridge, Rouse, and Johnson each scored. Clarridge and Thompson recorded two hits each in the victory while Brittany Pontious and Dani Feldman hit safely for the SWARM Orange team.. Ohio SWARM – 1 Rebels (Orahood) - 0 Championship Game Now into late afternoon Sunday, the SWARM refused to quit as they took on the Winner’s Bracket champion. Chelsea Burns was outstanding in the circle throwing a complete game, seven inning shutout. She allowed only three hits while striking out three. The only run of the game came in the fifth as Paige Westfall doubled, then scored on another double by Westland’s Carly Beasy. Both Westfall and Paige Thompson recorded two hits in the win. Rebels (Orahood) – 7 Ohio SWARM – 6 Championship Game 2The SWARM began the 2nd Championship game Sunday evening at 7 pm, 12 hours and six games into the day. The Rebels scored three runs in the second inning, but the SWARM refused to quit as Samantha Rouse singled to lead off the fourth inning and Hailee Johnson doubled. Both scored as Paige Thompson blasted a double to left field.
Casey Clarridge singled to lead off the fifth inning, stole second and scored on another hit by Rouse to tie the score at 3-3. The Rebels charged back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two runs to retake a 5-3 lead. SWARM made it 5-4 in the sixth inning as Beasy doubled and later scored on a towering double to left field by Maggie McMahan. The Rebels added a run to take a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth, only to see the SWARM charge back once more in the top of the seventh as Clarridge and Thompson both singled, then scored on a hit by Beasy to tie the game at 6-6. Sadly, the Rebels first batter tripled to lead off in the bottom of the seventh, and scored on a suicide squeeze to earn a 7-6 win. SWARM players ended the 14 hour day exhausted, but the coaches were thrilled with the team’s effort, attitude, and performance. Larry Orahood, longtime coach of the Rebels said the final game was the “finest softball game I have ever been involved in” and had nothing but praise for all of the SWARM players. The SWARM will take their 5-2-1 record to the ASA Westerville Warcat Invitational next weekend beginning play at 8 am Saturday.
