Hawaii 5-0 has been a staple of the Permian High School Marching Band since the early 70s. How did Hawaii 5-0 become a signature song for a team out in the dry deserts of West Texas you ask? Beginning in 1968, the University Interscholastic league added a fifth game to the Texas state football playoffs. So once a team made the playoffs, winning five games in postseason play would earn a state championship. As Permian was a threat to "go to State" every year, it seemed only natural to play a song with 5-0 in the title. And another MOJO tradition was born.
