GYMNASTICS: Boys win Bedford Tri Meet

February 1st, 2008- The Permian boys gymnastics team defeated defending state champions Hurst Bell and always-tough Euless Trinity in an optionals Tri Meet in Bedford. Micah Tripp led the way for the Panthers with a solid third place finish in the all around competition. Tripp won the pommel horse with a score of 9.60, and finished with 52.50 points. Team scores- Permian 156.40; Trinity 154.75; Hurst Bell 154.65. On the girl's side, Heather Waner scored 33.10 as the Lady Panthers finished third. MOJO NEWS: UIL Realignment 2008-2010

February 1st, 2008- The University Interscholastic League has announced their bi-ennial realignment for the 2008-2010 school years, and big changes are in store for Permian. The Panthers will now compete in District 2-5A, along with former 3-5A district mates Odessa High, Midland High, and Midland Lee. Old District 2-5A members Amarillo, Amarillo Tascosa, Lubbock, Lubbock Coronado, Lubbock Monterey, and San Angelo Central round out the 10 team district. Football schedules for the 2008 season should be set by February 22nd, and ODESSAPERMIAN.COM will post them as soon as they are available.


BASKETBALL: Boys get big win vs Cooper

February 1st, 2008- The Permian boys basketball team used a stifling defense to score an important 62-43 victory over Abilene Cooper. Eric Clark led the way with 13 points, with Tyrone Moorer and Chance Smith each scoring 10 points. The gives MOJO a 4-6 district record (7-21 overall) and sole possession of third place with two games to go. NEXT UP- The Panthers take on Midland High on February 8th at the Permian Gym. Tipoff at 7:30PM.


SOCCER: Boys undefeated in Georgetown

January 19th, 2008- The Permian boys soccer team went undefeated at the Georgetown Governors Cup, finishing with a 4-0 victory against Austin Westlake. Barrett Yates scored three goals and had an assist for the Panthers. Colby Pyron scored the other goal and added an assist. In Friday's 2-0 victory against Georgetown, Pyron scored both goals. Permian goalkeeper Chris Benavides had his second consecutive shutout. The Panthers are 3-2-1 on the season. NEXT UP- The Arlington Tournament, January 24th-26th. SOCCER: Girls get good wins in Justin

January 19th, 2008- The Permian girls soccer team made the finals of the Lady Texan Invitational Tournament in Justin. The Lady Panthers defeated Wylie and Arlington Martin, before falling to state power Flower Mound Marcus 2-1 in the championship game. Marianne Hubnik got the goal against Marcus. POWERLIFTING: Permian Power Classic

January 19th, 2008- The Permian powerlifting team won the Permian Power Classic Meet. MOJO got first place finishes from Lee Kinaird (165# class), Andrew Amoyaw (181#) and Samson McClane (220#). Romeo Maldanado, Rocky Garcia, and Garrett Porter finished second in the 165#, 242#, and Super Heavyweight classes, respectively. NEXT UP- Andrews Meet Thursday, January 31st. FOOTBALL: Alltel Team of The Year Award

The 2007 Permian Panthers were named Team of The Year as part of the Alltel Wireless Yards for Youth Campaign. The five-week campaign, which raised money based on yardage gained during the 3-5A district schedule, resulted in a total of $22,000 in donations to the Central Permian Basin Youth Athletic Association as well as the youth football leagues in Abilene and Midland. Permian was the top team in three out of five games, and earned Team of the Year honors by gaining a total of 2,095 yards in their five district games. Former Dallas Cowboy Jay Novacek presented the award. Congratulations to the 2007 Permian Panthers, and a special thanks to Alltel Wireless for donating to a great cause.

UPDATE: Former Panther Jim Bob Bizzell

Former Panther Jim Bob Bizzell is training for the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing. Bizzell, a 2004 Permian graduate, lost a portion of his leg in a motorcycle accident. With the help of a prosthetic leg Bizzell has continued to be active, and hopes to compete in the 100, 200, and 300 meter sprints for the US Team. Bizzell is the son of former Panther legend Joe Bob Bizzell. The 2008 Paralympics will be held August 8th through 24th in Beijing, China.

City proclaims October 12th MOJO Day

The City of Odessa proclaimed October 12th as MOJO Day. The battle cry was born during a football game in Abilene on October 13th, 1967. By the following year, MOJO was being yelled in unison as the Panthers made it all the way to the 1968 State Championship game. The proclamation was made by Odessa Mayor Larry Melton on Tuesday, October 9th at City Hall. Permian celebrated the day on Friday, October 12th before their 31-7 victory over Midland Lee at Ratliff Stadium. MOJO DAY VIDEO | MOJO DAY CERTIFICATE


Former Panther makes football history

Former Permian Panther Mike Flynt recently made college football history, becoming at age 59 the oldest player to make a varsity football roster. Flynt, who was a standout player on the Panthers' 1965 state championship team, will play for Sul Ross State University in Alpine. CLICK HERE TO READ THE ODESSA AMERICAN ARTICLE.


Permian has TWO National Championships!

While surfing the internet yours truly discovered an interesting website, SEK Sports Research. This website lists National High School Football Champions going back several years. The list was compiled using several nationwide polling services, including NATIONAL SPORTS NEWS SERVICE, USA TODAY, NATIONAL PREP POLL, and others. Included among the list of champions was the 1972 Permian Panthers. The undefeated '72 State Champs were certainly worthy of the accolades, winning the state title in a dominating 37-7 win over Baytown Sterling.
