OC WILDCATS WIN CALIFORNIA NQ TO EARN BERTH TO 16U ASA NATIONALS!

The 'Cats trekked up to Oxnard, CA with one goal in mind: Sioux Falls, South Dakota!  The team's last chance to become a part of 16U Nationals was no easy task.  13 other, equally motivated and incredibly talented teams were after the same thing.

The Wildcats faced the So Cal Diamonds in the first game, grabbing an early 3-1 lead and holding on before adding 6 more in the 7th.  Final score of 9-2 gave the 'Cats a little momentum heading into the next game, which took place immediately thereafter against Mizuno Pride who was waiting in the wings to play the winner.  Some fantastic pitching kept the Pride sticks quiet, bringing home a 4-0 win for the Wildcats.

After a night of rest, the 'Cats would find Saturday to be even tougher.  A high noon matchup with Samantha Ford Synergy was a wild one.  A 4-2 Wildcat lead in the 3rd disappeared in the 4th as Synergy put up 3 runs to take a 5-4 lead.  Neither team scored in the 5th as the game clock approached the 5 minute mark.  The 6th would be the 'Cats last chance.  After stopping Synergy 1-2-3 in the top, the 'Cats prepared to battle for a run.  A leadoff single, a textbook sac, another single, and an E5 brought the tying and winning runs across the plate!  Great tenacity and heart!

No time to rest, however, as the USA Athletics entered the opposing dugout.  Neither team knew it at the time, but this matchup would prove to be played out 3 times in this tournament.  The 9-3 final score of this first game between the 'Cats and USA was in no way indicative of how close the game really was.  USA scored one in the first, holding this lead until the 5th when the 'Cats finally tied it up.  The pitching and defensive in this game was tremendous.  USA can HIT the ball, no doubt!  The 'Cats were finally able to get their own bats going, touching up USA for 3 in the 6th to grab a 4-1 lead.  USA came roaring back to 4-3 as we entered the 7th inning.  The Wildcats sent 8 batters to the plate in the top of the 7th, picking up 5 insurance runs to help close out the win and earn a trip to the final on Sunday.

No surprise it was USA Athletics the 'Cats had to face on Sunday.  A 5-0 lead by the 'Cats disappeared as USA pecked away, taking a 6-5 lead with 2 runs in the 4th.  The 'Cats came back to tie it 6-6 in the 5th, only to let it slip away in the final innings, losing to USA 10-6.

The 'IF" game became necessary and the teams dug in for an epic battle.  The crowd was loud, each side willing its team to victory!  The Wildcats came out determined, scoring 2 in the first and preparing to play defense like they never had before.  USA continued to hit the long ball, but the 'Cat outfielders were tremendous, making running catches, over the shoulder, and dancing along the out of play line.  Relays to get a runner at third and at the plate proved to be the difference.

Taking a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the 6th, the 'Cats found themselves in a bases loaded jam with 2 outs.  A pitching change was made.  The USA and 'Cat crowds were fired up!  After a 9 pitch at bat, a ground ball to 3rd ended the USA attack.  Still another inning to play!!!  The 'Cats lead off the 7th with a single, but were unable to capitalize.  USA would have to be held.  The adrenalin and intensity was unbelievable!!  Both teams were determined and deserving.  A lead off strike out was followed by a double to the LF gap, then a single, bring the score 4-3 with the tying run on 1B and the winning run at the plate.  The 'Cats would get the second out on runner interference; but USA was still alive.  The final out came on a hard ground ball up the middle, grabbed by the SS and a step on the bag. Whew!!

Just a total team effort!  Great plays, great coaching, great fans!  Congratulations, OC Wildcats!

South Dakota here we come!

OC Wildcats Qualify for ASA Nationals at SoCal ASA State Championship

OC Wildcats qualify for 14U ASA Nationals by coming in 2nd at SoCal ASA State Championships in Hemet, CA.  The Cats stayed in the winners bracket all weekend and ultimately finished 2nd with national berth in hand.  A job well done by the girls, once again the Cats accomplish their goal.  Congrats to all the coaches and players.

The OC Wildcats were the cardiac kids this weekend.  Friday nights first matchup against the Artesia Punishers was a 13-1 win.  Saturday brought a bit more excitement.  The Cats had a rough first few innings and found themselves down by 4 in the last inning but true to form, the Cats bats raged and the Cats won by 1 run over the Anderson Heat.  Next up was Sudden Impact and again the Cats got behind early.  The Cats came back and gained a lead mid-way only to give it back in the last inning to setup the teams for an exciting international tiebreaker game.  The game went 3 ITB's before the Cats scored 2 and held Sudden Impact to 1 to win a thriller.  Sunday started with a matchup with American Pastime.  The game was a well played defensive battle with the Cats winning 3-1.  Sunday at 10:00am brought a matchup with Fury Softball.  The Cats broke out to an early 5 run lead and held on to secure the Nationals Berth.  The Cats came back to the main field to play their final game of the weekend against the Jets.  The Cats had a tough day and settled for 2nd and their ASA National Berth.  See ya all in Midland!!!
