Welcome to Ocosta HS Soccer!

Ocosta High School is located in Westport, Washington. We just ended our 10th season of girls' soccer in 2009. We are a 2B school that plays in the 1A Evergreen League in southwest Washington.

A post-season tradition has developed for  the Wildcats with six post-season appearances in the last eight years, topped off by a 4th place finish in the state in 2008.  Ranked as high as 3rd in the state in 2009, the Wildcats suffered injuries to eight starters (two lost for the season), the loss of two players to academic ineligibility (one a starter), two players removed from the team for unexcused absences (one a starter) many players missing a game or two to illnesses, one player moved, and one quit to go work, yet we still ended the season 10-7-1 and lost the district championship game in an eight player shootout to eventual state runnerup Napavine, a team that scored one goal against us in three games this year.

Napavine, WIAA Politics, End Wildcat Season

Napavine won the District 4 championship series after an eight player shootout. Tied 0-0 after regulation and two overtimes, Ocosta grabbed an early shootout advantage 2-1 after two shooters. The Wildcats would miss their next six shots in a 3-2 shootout.

Outstanding defense was turned in by Jamie Carter, Jenny Benn, Nicole Oddy, and Danielle Williams. Playing their best game ever at midfield were Shaylene Pase and Tasha Ruys. Senior Celeste Williams came off the bench to play a strong game.

Tannija Smith played a  strong game at forward. Tynesha Bushnell provided three shots, while Emily King was constantly double and triple teamed and used more as a passer.

Napavine advanced to the Tri-District playoffs with Districts 1, 2, and 3. Those districts voted earlier to only allow one District 4 team into the playoffs, despite letting a winless Rainier Christian into the playoffs and five other schools from the SeaTac and Northwest Leagues into the playoffs with losing records. Despite appeals to change the playoff format created by District 2, the WIAA refused to intervene.

The problems began when Napavine, which had been a combine team with Onalaska and played as a 1A school the previous seven years, decided to opt out of its combine and play alone as a 2B school. Because they changed in a WIAA mid-cycle year, no extra playoff spot was given to District 4. Districts 1, 2, and 3, which fought Ocosta joining their playoffs last year, voted to put all District 2 teams into their playoff, four of the five District 1 teams into the playoffs, and the lone District 3 team in. So the two District four teams, with 12-5 and 10-7-1 records against 1A competition, had to fight for the lone playoff spot.

Last year Ocosta defeated District 1's top two seeds and fourth seed on its way to a 4th place finish at state. With seven starters returning this year, who were all freshmen last year, Ocosta had a vastly improved record against 1A and 2A teams during the regular season.

District 4 even tried to get a pigtail game for its second team, against 0-12 Rainier Christian or  2-10 North Sound Christian, but Districts 1, 2, and 3 and the WIAA refused to allow it. Napavine went on to beat the top three teams from District 1 and the best team in District 3 to finish second in the state to Orcas Island, a team we defeated in last year's quarterfinals.
