Olive Branch Football:OBHS Fight Song

Olive Branch Football

The "Washington & Lee Swing" was the original music played at Olive Branch football games in the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's.  It was reinstated as the official fight song for OBHS at the start of the 2005 football season.  Prior to 2005 and beginning in the early 1980's, the "Notre Dame Victory March" was used.  In recent years, a large majority of Olive Branch's opponents also used this Notre Dame tune for their fight song as well.  Another fight song for OBHS was needed, one that would be unique and one that could convey the spirit of Olive Branch football.

A number of OBHS supporters began discussing the old "Washington & Lee Swing" that was once used by the school.  The discussion gained special interest when it was learned that someone had actually written words to the old Olive Branch fight song back in the 1940's.  A former band member began contacting cheerleaders and students from her school days to see if anyone could recall the words to the tune.  After much effort, an old paper containing the words was finally located.

Momentum for the "Swing" was gaining.  An audio music file of the "Washington & Lee Swing" was available from the internet and played to school administrators for their review.  The jazz style tune was a hit.  The administration gave their stamp of approval.  Next the project was handed over to OBHS Band Director Sid McNeil to work on obtaining the song's music and in teaching band members how the "Swing" was to be played.

Tradition has always been a strong and established part of the Olive Branch football program and it was only natural that the former "Washington & Lee Swing" be used once again as its official fight song.  Thanks to the help of Sara Ann Phillips, Ruby Dickerson and Dorothy Rikard, the words to this song, used by OBHS students and fans in the 40's, 50's and 60's, can be found below:

"Now, when those OBH boys fall in line,"
"We're going to win that game another time,"
"And with the football spirits we will yell,"
"And with the football spirits we will yell and yell,"
"We're going to mop, mop, mop with everything,"
"And to the highest banner we will sing,"
"We're going to put that other team 'neath the sod,"
"Hit 'em hard, O-B-H-S, rah, rah."
