To understand what makes Oakridge football so good year after year, you need only look at Kyle Huck.

The junior standout who never leaves the field is 5-8, 142 pounds. But, he plays like someone 6-5, 220.

You need someone to get great field position on a punt return? Put in No. 4.

You need someone to take down the opposition's best player? Call out Huck's name.

You need a player to get the game-saving interception? Huck's your man.

He was a key cog Friday night in a showdown of unbeaten West Michigan Conference squads. And his defensive play, which included a touchdown-saving interception and two punt returns that led to scores, helped the Eagles down Whitehall 14-6. The win also placed them firmly in the driver's seat of the conference race with a 5-0 record.

But, Huck was not alone. Top-ranked Oakridge has a unique tradition of having small players come up big year after year.

"We knew they would be a tough team," said Huck, of the Vikings, which presented one of the most physical lines the Eagles have faced. "But we don't back down against teams like that.

"It just makes us play harder. Our coaches have done a good job training us on what to do. Plus, we work pretty hard in the weightroom all year."

The secondary was supposed to be the Eagles' weak spot after losing three starters to graduation from last season's Division 5 state championship team. But the Oakridge coaching staff has done a remarkable job of filling holes with smallish, young players who aren't afraid to take on guys like Ryan Van Bergen, Whitehall's Michigan-bound 6-5, 260-pound tight end.

After Whitehall QB Garrett Anguilm seemed to have his way in the first quarter, completing 6-of-7 passes for 49 yards, the secondary buckled down and limited him to 5-of-15 the rest of the way.

That secondary includes senior Aaron Brown, who also is 5-8, 142; sophomore Matt Eacker, 5-10, 157 and junior Luke Peterson, 6-3, 165.

Brown led the team in tackles with seven. Peterson had a couple of sticks worthy of ESPN highlight reels. And Eacker's coverage in the second half kept the Vikings from staging a comeback.

But, the biggest reason why Oakridge has such success is that the players don't focus on size. They don't worry about what another team has done. They only know what they are expected to do.

And that is to win.

So, when a task is put in front of them, they go after it full bore.

Yes, even Huck had to take down Van Bergen a couple times, never mind that the versatile player is about twice Huck's size.

"It didn't hurt as bad as I thought it was going to," said Huck.

Van Bergen had Oakridge coaches scrambling in the first half, trying to figure how to handle the big guy who would line up in every position conceivable on both offense and defense.

"At first we were trying to run away from him," said Oakridge coach Jack Schugars. "Then, we just started not worrying about him. We got into our blocking scheme and played our game."

And that is when the Eagles truly started to take control.

It became a trust issue.

Much the same way it was last year when the Eagles stunned perennial power Jackson Lumen Christi in the state championship game.

There was no trickery. Nothing fancy. They just ran right at Lumen Christi, displaying a determination and toughness that belied their abilities.

Against Whitehall, the Eagles did not back down. They ran their game plan and relied on their little guys to get the job done.

And, once again, they didn't disappoint.

The real secret to Oakridge's success is every time they go out on the field, they truly believe they will win. That kind of confidence can make 5-8 guys play like they are 10 feet tall.

Just ask Huck.

Control of the West Michigan Conference still rests in the clutches of the Oakridge Eagles.

Whitehall, this season's top challenger, ventured into Eagle Nation on Friday for a battle royale with sole possession of first place on the line.

The Vikings showed their toughness, but the Eagles made the key plays and emerged with a 14-6 win to remain unbeaten.

"It's a great feeling," said Oakridge senior running back Cordero Ibarra. "We control our own destiny now. Whitehall showed they are a great team and they hit hard, but we just stepped up and hit harder."

The numbers for Oakridge, the top-ranked team in Division 5, and Whitehall, No. 8 in Division 4, ended up amazingly close.

The Vikings edged the hosts 12-11 in first downs and 174-166 in total offense, while each team ran 53 offensive plays.

When it came time to putting points on the board, preventing touchdowns or just plain hanging on to the ball, Oakridge came through.

"I am very impressed with Oakridge," said Whitehall coach Andy Malbouef. "They're not overly big but they hit hard and they're so disciplined. They're well-coached and don't make any mistakes."

Neither team did much of anything offensively in the first half despite having at least two drives begin in the opposition's territory.

The Eagles were the only ones to convert as junior quarterback Corey Phelps hit senior receiver Aaron Brown on a 22-yard touchdown pass with 4:14 to play in the first quarter.

For the rest of the half, it was a slugfest. Whitehall, which was led by its huge defensive front of Greg Stapel, Ryan VanBergen, Josh Short, Alan Holmes and Tony Miller, forced two Oakridge turnovers but committed three themselves.

"I knew it was going to be a defensive battle," said Oakridge coach Jack Schugars. "Whitehall's a very good team. We've got a bunch of unselfish players and great leaders. It doesn't get any better than having two seniors like T.J. Patton and Cordero Ibarra block for each other and playing inside linebacker together."

Patton and Ibarra were stymied for the most part offensively, but got on track on the opening drive of the second half.

The Eagles started at their own 45 and marched 55 yards in eight plays for their second score. Ibarra did the bulk of the work, rushing six times for 48 yards on the drive and totalling 70 yards on 19 carries.

Whitehall continued to put the pressure on, however. The Vikings had a first-and-goal at the Oakridge 6-yard line early in the fourth quarter, but junior defensive back Kyle Huck intercepted a Garrett Anguilm pass at the 1-yard line to keep the guests off the board.

"The effort was there the whole game but we made too many mistakes," said Malbouef. "We had turnovers and blown assignments. It's disappointing."

Whitehall's defense held at the 15-yard line and junior Tony Fountain breathed life into the Vikings with a 35-yard punt return back to the 15. One play later, fullback Shane Boyer gave them renewed hope as he barreled into the end zone with 4:18 to play.

Oakridge never gave up the ball again. Patton, who led all rushers with 75 yards on 21 carries, rumbled for two key first downs, including one on a 3rd-and-7 play with 2:20 to play.

"I told him just to cut off my block," said Ibarra, whose team committed just one penalty. "Whitehall wasn't going to just let us walk away with the win. We had to fight hard to get it and we did."

Anguilm finished 11-for-22 for 81 yards passing and two interceptions. Chris Delia led the Vikings with 93 yards on 19 carries.

Oakridge hits the road for two games against Hart and Shelby, likely without two-way lineman Josh Wahr, who may have a broken ankle.

Get Well Soon Josh Wahr
Junior Josh Wahr suffered a broken ankle in the game with Whitehall on Friday. Josh had surgery this morning and is in good spirits. He will be able to come home Sunday. The Oakridge Eagle Football Family sends out our thoughts and prayers to Josh. We look forward to a speedy recovery and his return to the game field for his senior season.

Eagles Earn Playoff Bid With Win Over Shelby
(Muskegon Chronicle)
Oakridge 41, Shelby 12 -- At Shelby, Oakridge broke open a close contest with a 21-0 fourth-quarter uprising. After a scoreless first quarter, Andy Potts scored on an 8-yard run for a 7-0 Eagles halftime lead. Oakridge scored the first two TDs of the second half on a T.J. Patton TD run of 47 yards and a 24-yard scoring pass from Corey Phelps to Kyle Huck. The 20-0 lead disappered quickly as Shelby scored on Andy Rodriguez's 3-yard pass to Kyle Clark and a 30-yard strike to Tommy Gemme to cut the lead to 20-12 at the end of three. Potts scored from 3 yards out to start the fourth then Patton returned an interception 34 yards for another score. Patton added the final TD on an 18-yard run. Oakridge had 347 total yards, including 290 rushing, led by Patton's 170 on 13 carries. The Tigers had 274 yards, including 170 through the air as Rodriguez finished 16-for-26 and Gemme had three catches for 67 yards.

Former Eagles TJ Williams and Bryan Turner to Face Each Other Saturday
Former Oakridge teammates on opposing sides in key MIAA game
Thursday, October 19, 2006
By Mike Mattson
CHRONICLE STAFF WRITER

Bryan Turner and TJ Williams are good friends and former Oakridge football teammates.

They went their separate ways to college to pursue an education and football at the Division III level. On Saturday, they'll square off against each other when Hope College hosts Adrian College in a key Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association game at 1 p.m.

Neither will let their friendship get in the way of their duties on Saturday.

"On the field, I don't put a face with a jersey," said Turner, a starting junior cornerback for Hope. "We're friends, but from the time the game starts until the game ends, we're on opposing teams. I'm sure he'll want to hit me and I'll want to get some pops on him, too."

Williams, the leading rusher at tailback for Adrian, is looking forward to seeing Turner on and off the field in Holland.

"It's always fun for me to play Hope and go back to the west side of the state where I feel at home," Williams said. "It's always fun to play against somebody you played with for so long.

"We both talk a little bit (of trash)," added Williams, whose father Terry was the starting tailback at Adrian from 1980-83. "We e-mail back and forth and see how each other is doing during the season."

Both are doing just fine.

Williams, who wears jersey No. 3, ranks third in rushing with 97 carries for 466 yards (4.8) and five touchdowns. He started at fullback last year and is taking advantage of more carries in his senior season. In fact, he scored the first touchdowns in both end zones of the school's new stadium.

Turner, who wears No. 4, ranks seventh on the team with 27 tackles, including 15 solos, with six pass breakups.

Saturday's game is big for both teams.

Adrian (3-3, 2-1), the preseason MIAA favorite, has lost three games by a total of 16 points. The Bulldogs lost a 13-10 decision to Olivet, which shares the top spot with Hope (3-3, 3-0).

"We had a few new guys on offense, a new quarterback this year and a few key injuries," Williams said about the team's slow start. "It took us awhile to get the chemistry. I feel very confident about the rest of the season and about Saturday."

Hope lost all three of its non-conference games to quality opponents, but has reeled off league wins against Albion, Alma and Kalamazoo.

"It's going to be exciting," said Turner, whose father Bryan played halfback at Grand Valley State. "The harder competition in the nonleague portion of our schedule has made us better. Adrian is a huge game for us."

Williams and Turner were high school teammates for three years, including Williams' senior season that ended with a loss to Constantine in the regional championship game.

Williams has a double major in political science and economics and plans to graduate in the spring on the four-year plan. He hopes to have his best game yet against the Dutchmen.

"I feel I have something to prove to a lot of people," Williams said. "I'll try to go out there and prove it."

Turner is studying management and also expects to graduate on the four-year plan. He'd like nothing more than to beat Adrian and Williams and stay in first place.

"They are a great team as always," Turner said. "Their senior class hasn't beaten Hope, so they have added incentive."
