Oak Hill Wrestling : History
Oak Hill Wrestling HistoryWrestling in Oak Hill got its start in the early 90's under the guidance of head coach Frank Aylor. Coach Aylor worked hard over the next decade maintaining the program he started from scratch without the help of a feeder program. Coach Aylor deserved much thanks for getting the program off the ground. During the 1999-2000 season, Joel Harris became the new OHHS head coach after spending the previous five season coaching at Greenbrier West High School. Along with the help of assistant coach Alan Fell, the first feeder program was started. The addition of a middle school program at Collins Middle School and a youth team in the community was a valuable boost to the program. Over the next few years the program continued to grow with many young wrestlers working to become champions. Oak Hill had its first two regional champions in 2001 with Shawn Garland at 140lbs. and David Dequasie at 275. Dequasie went on to become the first state placewinner by finishing 5th. Garland graduated the following season with a school record 99 career wins. During the summer of 2004, Ryan Fell became the first Oak Hill wrestler to qualify for the Cadet Nationals in Fargo, ND. He also gained all-american status in 2004 for the second consecutive year by finishing seventh in the NHSCA tournament in Virginia Beach. Then in 2007 Fell became the first Oak Hill wrestler to claim a state championship by winning the 215 class. More accomplishments occurred in 2008 when Oak Hill claimed both the Coalfield Conference and Region 3 team championships for the first time in school history. At this time the program continues to grow with hopes remaining high for additional individual and team championships in the future.
