Friday 6th July

In the shadow of the Waitakere ranges, at the home of Waitemata Rugby club on a cold, wet winters day in Auckland - the Downunderbowl returned after a 10 year absence from our shores. The visiting teams California/Washington and Kentucky/Alabama disembarked from their respective touring buses to be greeted by the representation from American Football NZ. The games played on Friday afternoon provided the crowd of several hundred a wonderful competition of rookie against the expert.

Both teams began their campaigns with the traditional challenge causing concern amongst our visiting teams and officials. However the teams played with determination and commitment to compete against the American teams.

Final Score:

AFNZ Vulcans 3 - 32 California/Washington All Stars

AFNZ Mako 0 - 18 Kentucky/Washington All Stars

Monday 11th July

Monday morning; the weather promised to be warmer and drier under the gaze of the Waitakere Ranges. It certainly lived up to that promise. The Downunderbowl games played this day was a spectacle of American Football; routinely regarded as myth, never before seen on NZ soil but the few hundred present at Waitemata Rugby were witness to an amazing display of competition.

The AFNZ U21 Mako and the AFNZ U21 Vulcans very quickly let the opposition know that they were here to play. The Mako extracted first blood with a successful field goal in the first quarter but California/Washington were permitted entry over the goal line. The second half would rival any international test match as both teams challenge each other between the 20 yard lines only to repel any further progress down the gridiron.

In the dying seconds of the game the victor would be found.

Final score: U21 AFNZ Mako 10 - 13 California/Washington All Stars

The stage was set for the U21 Vulcans with the battle witnessed in game one. Now it would be seen whether in the echoes of the NZAFA Haka if the Vulcans would annihilate their opposition. Those who filmed the games will treasure the footage that they possess of the football played between the Vulcans and Kentucky/Alabama. There were the usual touchdowns dis-allowed due to penalties from both teams, the offensive drive was relentless and the pressure sustained by the defensive squads would see the game head towards over time.

With 1 minute and 28 seconds left on the game clock - the Kentucky/Alabama offense could not penetrate the goal line defense, with only inches left to cross into the endzone. The Vulcans defense repelled three consecutive offensive drives by the visitors however with any war of attrition a victor must be found.

Final score: U21 Auckland Vulcans 0 - 6 Kentucky/Alabama All Stars
