  Umpires

Greetings From Larry:

ump2
There are many reasons to get into officiating: love of the game, free hot dogs, soaking in the praise of the fans. Baseball, especially at the Little League level should be fun, and hopefully we get a great sense of enjoyment in playing ball with the kids. We encourage all umpires to take advantage of the many resources available, both locally and on the Internet. In district 6, if you have a question about something that occurred during a game, please fell free to contact Larry Shapiro, NYS District 6 Umpire Consultant by phone at 607-962-3725 or by email.

"The Role of the Umpire"

"The only purpose for adults in this game is to be role models for the children. If you cease to be a role model, your presence will no longer be required!"-- Phil Lamneck, LL Umpire

Larry's Tips to Improve Your Game

1. Read the rule book and understand it. A strong working knowledge of the LL rulebook will give you confidence. You need to know the rules without having to pull out the book during a game. Occasionally, this will be necessary, but I think we all shudder at the image of 3-4 adults thumbing through a rule book, pointing at pages, while the kids want to play ball.

2. Arrive at the field early.

3. Look sharp, clean uniform, clean shaven (if you don’t have a beard), shoes shined

4. Inspect the field, walk the fence, inspect the bats and helmets, shake hands with the coaches and managers.

5. Conduct a strong pre-game conference with the Managers, go over local rules, ground rules, etc. Is the top of the dugout in play or dead ball? Procedure if a ball gets caught in the fence, etc.

6. All of these first 5 points will help you establish a strong positive image and help you control the game. Start off on the right foot!!!

7. If you have a partner, have an umpire pre-game conference: who has the foul lines, who takes the tag and play on fly balls? go over positioning with men on base and responsibility for calls at each base.

8. Start the game with a pointing to the pitcher and a loud “PLAY BALL”

9. Control the game but don’t forget that it’s the kids’ game, we’re just privileged to be on the field with them.

10. Have fun!
