NVYSL-BUSD Field Upgrade Project
August 2009 Update
The orange fence will be coming down at Morrill in August.
HOWEVER, we will not get M2 back to use until September 1st and M3 is down until Fall 2010. According to the BUSD Maintenance Supervisor and the Field Repair Crew because the fields were in such bad shape, they need time to recover.
As September draws near, practice assignments for M2 will be made.
In the meantime, no one is to use M2 for any reason & M3 will be closed (except for tournament use) until next fall (2010). We ask everyone's cooperation in leaving these fields to fallow for this designated time period. A lot of work has gone into improving these fields - and M1 is in the best shape it's been in several years. In addition to the funds NVYSL put into the repair, BUSD replaced all the sprinkler heads, replaced several of the damaged pipes and has worked on a long-term maintenance plan for the fields. NVYSL has established an excellent working relationship with BUSD. Any unauthorized use of M2 and M3 will be addressed directly by the NVYSL Board Of Directors.
The exception is being made for the tournament (Sept 26-27, 2009) as the funds raised from the event will be used to cover on-going field maintenance costs.)
The NVYSL-BUSD Field Upgrade Task Force met on Tues, Dec 9th. The following is a summary of the discussion and a list of action items.
DISCUSSION:
1) North Valley Youth Soccer League has allocated an amount not to exceed $10,000 to upgrade the fields at Morrill Middle School and the practice field at Brooktree Elementary school this year. This amount was voted on and approved at the December 3rd, 2008 NVYSL Board Meeting.
The fields at Morrill MS have not had any attention, other than filling holes, watering and cutting the grass for an extensive period of time. The fields are filled with ruts, uneven and are approaching the point of presenting a safety hazard for all players and coaches.
In the recent District 2 Cup and other tournaments hosted by NVYSL, the only criticism received was regarding the caliber of the fields.
Brooktree is the initial selection for some minor maintenance because to upgrade Morrill's fields, only one field Morrill field (Field 3 - furthest from Cropley) will be available for games for the NVYSL spring season. Sierramont is in use by other youth leagues for the spring.
An on-going upgrade and maintenance plan is being developed between BUSD and NVYSL to get other fields in better playing condition.
As other fields are upgraded, practices will be shifted to the other fields as a means to preserve the Morrill playing fields as much as possible. Additionally, the long-term plan will allow the option of resting fields at critical times to ensure they have time to recover after intensive use over the season.
A more durable turf will be used throughout the fields, but especially in the areas of the center circles and goalie boxes.
2) Two fields will be available for Morrill Middle School spring soccer M2 and M3 (the Middle and Far Field from Cropley)
Repairs will start in February on Morrill 1 and the area closest to Cropley Ave (referred to the the U8 field.)
This area will be cordoned off - with no activity being allowed until August 2008.
Following the completion of the Middle School soccer season in March, Field M2 will be taken out for repair and rested until August, 2008.
NVYSL spring games will be played on Field M3.
Following the completion of the NVYSL spring soccer season, field M3 will be taken out of commission for repair. M3 will not be used until Spring 2010.
3) NVYSL Spring Practices
Since Morril fields 1 and 2 will not be available for practice for spring 2009, practices will be shifted to other fields. Permits have been submitted for Noble, Toyon, Ruskin, Sierramont, Majestic Way and Brooktree. Morrill 3 will be available for practices through the end of June.
Teams will be surveyed to determine if other permits are needed for Cataldi and Majestic Way for practice fields.
4) Fundraising
A letter has been put together to go out to all NVYSL parents, asking for field upgrade donations. These donations will be sent to Cheryl Van Zuylen directly (checks made out to NVYSL.) and tracked in a separate account - only usuable for field upgrades as part of the intital effort and as part of an ongoing project.

What to do if someone else is on your assigned field?
Check the schedule to see which teams have been assigned to your field.
If other sports teams or individual groups are using your space, obtain a copy of NVYSL's permit from your coordinator and ask them to produce the same. If they cannot produce a permit and refuse to leave, consider the safety of your players and use good judgment about how confrontational to be. Let the Field Coordinator know of the situation. If the same group occupies the field at your next practice, we will contact the police.
