North Star Volleyball Club: Coaches

Coach Name

Corey Baumann - 12s Coach

Hello! I am thrilled at the opportunity to be working with the 12s at Northstar.

I began playing volleyball in the 9th grade at East High School. I grew to love the game enough to continue past my graduation as a coach. I stayed at East for another 14 years coaching boys. The last 9 of which were as the varsity coach. I enjoyed my time there helping dozens of players begin, develop, and excel at the game of volleyball. I also coached a few years of club ball for a couple organizations in the area.

I gave up the commitment when I learned that my wife Joan and I were having our first child. Not surprisingly, my daughter Kayla has developed a love for the game that I shared. It is a thrill to come full circle and work with her and her teammates on the 12s team at Northstar!

Coach Name

Mike Miller - 12s Coach

Hello volleyball enthusiasts! My name is Mike Miller, I am a director with North Star VBC and an assistant coach for our 12s & 14s teams. I am from Southern California and grew up near the beach, so it was natural that my friends and I started playing sand volleyball. I Played varsity in high school as a OH & DS and followed with many co-ed leagues over the years.

I have coached 7th, 8th, 9th & 10th grade girls volleyball for the past 4 years and have really enjoyed seeing the kids continue to make new milestones in their volleyball careers.

I want every player this season to realize their potential - to be able to look back at the end of the season and say... "wow, I've improved alot!".

To do this players need to :

  • work hard for the entire practice
  • get plenty of rest at night
  • eat healthy foods & hydrate - fuel your vball game
  • keep a positive frame of mind - improving your skills take time
  • stay in the moment - focus on the next play not the past
  • don't worry about mistakes at practices or tournaments - let the coaches fix that
  • give it 110% and leave the rest on the court

Coach Name

KaSandra Gehrke - 14's Coach

Hello! My name is KaSandra Gehrke. My athletes usually call me “Coach K”. I am currently a student at MATC. This is my last year at MATC and then I’m going to UW Madison for the Physical Education Bachelor’s degree. I have coached volleyball for three years now. I coached two years of 7th grade volleyball for DeForest and I also coached one year of 8th grade volleyball for Waunakee. I also coached freshman basketball for Sun Prairie last year and JV softball for Waunakee.

In high school I played all three sports. I was on varsity for three years for volleyball. My specialty was left-side hitting. I was MVP, offensive player of the year, and captain my senior year of volleyball. I still play during the week on a women’s league for MSCR. Volleyball has been a big part of my life and I look forward to coaching for North Star!

Expections:

  1. Please try to come to every practice and be on time. If you are going to miss a practice or a game make sure you let me know right away.
  2. Always ask me if you have any questions or concerns about something. I have an “open door” policy and I’m always willing to talk to an athlete when they need to.
  3. A good attitude is a must! You will always play better when you are not upset. So please leave your attitude/outside issues behind when you step into the gym!

Coach Name

Curtis Johnson - 14's Coach

Hello! My name is Curtis Johnson and I am originally from West Allis, WI. I have been in the U.S. Air Force for the past 22 years and have been working at Truax Field for the past 18 years. I am also a member of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Department Dive Search and Rescue Team. I have been playing volleyball on and off for 20 years now. I started off playing intramural volleyball and then moved on to playing at Edward’s Air Force Base on the Maintenance Squadron Team and in the High Dessert Grass Volleyball League. I continually play co-ed volleyball in the summer and winter with different leagues. I have coached 7th and 8th grade girl’s volleyball for the Poynette School District, and am in my first year of coaching for North Star Volleyball.

In my coaching, I want the girl’s to learn trust in their coaches and in each other, confidence in their abilities, and most importantly…Teamwork! Volleyball is the ultimate team sport and trusting in your teammates is a key piece of being successful. As a coach, correcting mistakes is a key element of our jobs. Please don’t take things personally, let’s make it a fun and a rewarding season. Remember, winning isn’t always measured in wins and losses. Winning is also measured in personal growth and development; not only on the court but off of it as well!

I played varsity volleyball for 3 years in high school and club for 5.

I began my coaching career in high school working with 7th grade girls and have most recently coached an 8th grade girls’ team for Waunakee Middle School this past fall. Coach Name

Katie Volz - 16's Coach

Hi my name is Katie and I have been playing volleyball since 7th grade. I played all through high school which included 3 years of varsity play, and during the off-season a year of club volleyball which allowed me to experience the Junior National Olympics in Texas. After High School I played four years of intramural volleyball in college, and on winter and summer leagues (both coed and women’s). I have also played in various tournaments throughout the years on both coed and women’s teams. I continue to play on various leagues throughout the year to satisfy my craving to be back on the volleyball court!

This will be my 4th year coaching for Northstar. I have coached 15’s, 16’s & 17's teams. This year I will be coaching 16’s. Some of my previous coaching experiences include coaching for Pardeeville High School 7th grade, and summer leagues for girls interested in starting volleyball.

I try to emphasize teamwork throughout practices, tournaments, and team bonding events because at the end of the day we win and lose as a team. I expect each girl to give 100% throughout the season so they can better themselves and grow as a player.

I am looking forward to a great season with the girls.

Coach Name

Dave Schraufnagel - 17's Coach

My name is David Schraufnagel. I'm origionally from Ripon, Wisconsin where I specialized in everything the unpopular kids did. I'm a cross country running, tennis playing, volleyball playing, bowler. I was an avid chess player, 3-time member of the math team and a science olympiad whiz-kid. Long story short... kinda a dork! As far as volleyball is concerned, I've coached for 8 years of High School, College and Club Volleyball in the past 11 years ranging from the ages of 13's through college students.

I played 3 years of volleyball at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, and still play a lot of volleyball to this day. I'm new to the Madison area, and am excited to have a new club to call home. This is my 2nd  year at North Star VBC, and I'm looking forward to a fun and productive season with my 17's!

Coach Name

Rachael Schmidt - 17's Coach

Hi! I’m Coach Rachael Schmidt, and this is my 6th season with North Star Volleyball! In my tenure here, I’ve coached teams from 15’s to 17’s. Before my time at North Star, I was a 17’s coach with Appleton Excel volleyball up in the Fox Valley. During the high school season, I’ve enjoyed leading the freshmen girls at Lodi High School for the past 2 years.

Before I was ever a coach I was quite a player! My career started in 7th grade, where I continued to play all the way through high school including being a 2 year varsity starter at Hortonville High. I also played club each year during the off season so I could get as many practices as I could to further my career. I then began playing at Madison College, where I played a variety of front row positions on our way to a 2nd place finish at nationals in 2009.

I still play a lot of volleyball recreationally. Instead of just playing 6’s, I enjoy playing a lot of quads (4 on 4) and even triples in my free time. Most of my leagues are a variety of women or co-ed and differ between a hard court, grass, or sand. I also just bought a house in Stoughton, so the rest of my limited free time is dedicated to small house projects. I’m eager to work with girls that show the same passion that I had as a player, and being able to help them become the best players they can be.
