2009 Recap
2009 saw another successful year of baseball in the North Story County Little League. The NSCLL had the most teams ever, with 31, and had over 340 players. There were 12 teams in the Minors (5 Roland-Story based, 4 Gilbert, and 3 South Hamilton), 11 teams in the Majors (5 Roland-Story based, 3 Gilbert, and 3 South Hamilton), 4 teams in the Juniors (3 Roland-Story based, 2 Gilbert, and 2 South Hamilton), and 1 team in the Senior Division, which was kids from all school districts pooled together, including kids from Colo-Nesco. Minors are 9-10 years old, Majors 11-12, Juniors 13-14, and Seniors 15-16.
Games were regularly scheduled in Story City, Roland, Jewell, Ellsworth, Zearing, and Gilbert. The Senior Division played all their games in Ankeny. In 2009, there were 222 regular season games scheduled for NSCLL teams. The Carousel diamond hosted 51 games, the Roland Middle School field had 29, and the East Diamond (behind the high school field) hosted 16.
Some of the new and news from 2009 includes new fence toppers and breakaway bases in Roland, and a couple truckloads of field dirt were added to the Carousel field. The highlight at the Carousel was the new remote control scoreboard. The East Diamond sported new grass, after all the grass was killed in the floods of 2008.
With 222 games, and over 300 kids, it involves a lot of volunteer time by parents, and even some with no kids, for the league. The only paid people in the league are some (but not all) of the umpires. Coaches, some umpires, concession workers, league officials, and field maintenance people put in numerous hours to make the 2009 season go. For more information go to the league website www.eteamz.com/nscll. Signups for the 2010 season will be in February.

Year End Tournament Info
YEAR END TOURNAMENT INFO! Both the Minors and Majors regular season champs will go to Ankeny to play in the tournament of champions on June 13. The remaining teams will play in a year end tournament on our local fields. The 6 lowest seeded Minors teams will play on Monday, June 8. The 4 lowest seeded Majors teams will play on Tuesday, June 9. Wednesday, June 10 will be a rain catch up day. The remaining Minors teams will play on Thursday, June 11, and the remaining Majors teams will play on Friday, June 12. Both Minors and Majors will play their semi finals on Saturday, June 13. The Finals will be at the Carousel field on Monday, June 15 at 6PM for the Minors, and 8PM for the Majors. Games may be moved on dates and times to the discretion of the NSCLL board, depending on field availability and rainouts.
Seedings will be determined by scores reported to northstorybaseball@yahoo.com by 10PM Saturday, June 6. Regular season pitching rules apply. Higher seeded team will be the game home team. The NSCLL will try to place higher seeded teams on a "home" field, but may move them for space reasons, though the higher seeded team will always be the game home team. No pool players are allowed in the tournament. A team may play with 8, but if only 7 are available at game time, the team with 7 or fewer must forfeit. Stayed tuned to this website for more details later in the season.

All-Stars info
The NSCLL has 4 All-Star teams. One each of league age 9, 10, 11, and 12 year olds. (Player's age on May 1, 2009). Each Roland-Story and South Hamilton based team will provide a player in each age group for their division. (Example: the Brewers will have one 11 year old all star, and one 12 year old). Gilbert does not particpate due to having a substantial number of players actually within the boundaries of the Ames LL (but within the Gilbert school district).
In the Minors, all players on a team will vote for their 9 year old rep, and their 10 year old rep. In the Majors, the coaches will decide their team's 11 year old rep, and their 12 year old rep. Coaches! Make sure you get the kids in the right voting pool, for example we have 11 year old 6th graders. The coaching staff of each all star team will be the division winner, or the highest finishing SH or R-S team. That manager gets first pick on what age group he might like to coach, or to decline the opportunity. If a manager declines, the opportunity continues down the line of finish order from the regular season.
Once a manager has accepted, he can decide his coaching staff. It can be his regular season coaching staff, or he may take coaches from other teams. Each team will start with 8 players, one from each R-S and SH team. The manager can then make another 4 to 7 at-large picks, as he sees fit, to put together a team that can best represent the NSCLL.
All Star tournament dates are as follows for 2009:
July 1, 2, 6, 7, 8 pool play games
July 9 rain make up date
July 10-14 District Finals at various sites
July 15 rain make up date
Half of the games will be played on NSCLL fields, the remainder will be on the road. Here is a link to all the fields in our district. http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=109575020038814676831.000446b23d72439193bfc&ll=41.913938,-93.642482&spn=0.855209,1.427707&source=embed

2009 Rules Changes
There are two key rules changes for 2009. LL International allowed local leagues to choose one of two pitching rest requirement options. Option 1 was the same as last year. The NSCLL board chose option 2. Option 2 removes all game of rest requirements and goes strictly on a days of rest based on pitch counts. However Option 2 extended all pitch counts over 20 pitches by another day of rest.
For 2009, for all divisions, a player pitching 20 pitches or less needs no rest days. 21-40 pitches will now need 2 days of rest. 41-60 pitches will now need three days of rest. 61 and above pitches will now require four days of rest. (But again, a game of rest is no longer needed)
Another key change is pitching to catching limitations. Last year, if a player pitched even 1 pitch, he would not be allowed to catch the remainder of the game. Starting in 2009, if a pitcher is removed from the mound before throwing 41 pitches, he will be allowed to play the position of catcher.

2008 Wrap Up
2008 saw another successful year of baseball in the North Story County Little League. The NSCLL had the most teams ever, with 29, and again had over 300 players. There were 12 teams in the Minors (5 Roland-Story based, 4 Gilbert, and 3 South Hamilton), 11 teams in the Majors (5 Roland-Story based, 3 Gilbert, and 3 South Hamilton), 4 teams in the Juniors (2 Roland-Story based, 1 Gilbert, and 1 South Hamilton), and 2 teams in the Senior Division, which was kids from all school districts pooled together, including kids from Colo-Nesco. Minors are 9-10 years old, Majors 11-12, Juniors 13-14, and Seniors 15-16.
A rainy spring and flooding in Story City prompted the movement of many games from their originally scheduled locations and times. Fortunately the field in Zearing was available for some amount of makeups. Games were regularly scheduled in Story City, Roland, Jewell, Ellsworth, and Gilbert. The Senior Division played all their games in Ankeny. There were 212 regular season games scheduled for NSCLL teams.
Some of the new and news from 2008 include: An outfield fence was installed at the Story City Carousel, as well as receiving infield dirt work, including break-away bases. Jewell got upgraded dugouts and an outfield fence. The Juniors expanded their horizons and played several games against Ames LL teams. Gilbert set up their 90 foot bases diamond for the Juniors Division to also be measured out for 60 foot bases games in the Minor and Major Divisions, helping with field space. The NSCLL All-Star teams in 2008 tied for the best pool play record in league history, finishing 8-8. The 11 year olds fared the best, winning their pool, including wins over much larger rivals, Marshalltown and Ankeny. The Minors Angels had the best finish ever for a NSCLL team in the Tournament of Champions, winning two games to reach the semi-finals, before falling to the eventual champion.
With 212 games, and over 300 kids, it involves a lot of volunteer time by parents, and even some with no kids, for the league. The only paid people in the league are some (but not all) of the umpires. Coaches, some umpires, concession workers, league officials, and field maintenance people put in numerous hours to make the 2008 season go. Let's do it again in '09!

Feb 2008 Board meeting notes
Volunteers and those bringing equipment for the skills assessment on March 1 were indentified. The NSCLL will again we sending a minors and a majors team to the District 3 Tournament of Champions. And the NSCLL will be sending an all-star team in the 9, 10, 11, and 12 year old divisions.
The Pre-Draft meeting will be held on Thursday, Feb 28 at 7PM at the Roland Middle School cafeteria.
Draft considerations were discussed. Those picking last in players, get first choice in team/uniform selection. Roland-Story based teams in the Minors will come from the A's, Rockies, Marlins, Red Sox, White Sox. In the Majors it will be the Brewers, Twins, Yankees, Cubs, and Braves. South Hamilton in the Minors will be the Cubs, Pirates, and Twins, and the Majors will be the Mets, Cardinals, and Royals. Gilbert based will have the Tigers, Reds, and Orioles, and the Majors will be the Pirates and Rangers. Number of teams in each geographic area, and age division are still to be determined.
Roland-Story based cleanup day is scheduled for April 5 at 9AM. The board approved an outfield fence purchase for the Carousel field, in a cost share arrangement with the City of Story City.
The League is partnering with the R-S high school baseball coaches to hold a camp for grades 3-6 on April 5. Cost will be $25.
The board reconsidered a special rule in the minors, and instead endorsed the new 5 run ruleto be the same as the official Little League rule-5 runs max scored per inning, with the 10 run rule also applying in the 4th inning and beyond.
Next meeting is 6-28-08.
Saturday, February 2
January 2008 Update
Roland-Story based registration is on Feb 10 and 16. The Skills Assessment is on March 1. Coaches pre draft meeting on Feb 28. March 27 or March 30 are mandatory coaches meetings.

11-18-07 Board Meeting
Meeting highlights:
The folks from South Hamilton will be meeting to discuss field/dugout improvements in Jewell and Ellsworth, as well as prepping for 2008.
The Board reapproved allowing 3rd graders, who are not yet 9 on May 1, 2008, to participate in the minors program.
Mike Urbanek has accepted the Safety Officer role. John Wilson is resigning from the board and his replacement is Doug Mortvedt. Doug will also assume the equipment manager role.
The Board discussed rule changes for 2008, in particular the pitching rule changes. With LL HQ adopting the 5 run per inning limit in the Minors, the Board repealed the previous local rule regarding 5 run innings. The Board is going to lift the 5 run limit for the Minors in the 5th inning and beyond. It is expected the local time limit rule will catch any big innings after that.

2007 wrap up
The North Story County Little League finished its 8th season in 2007 with over 300 players participating on 28 teams. The league played their games on fields in Roland, Story City, Jewell, Ellsworth, Gilbert, and Zearing.
The 9 and 10 year old division, known as the Minors, had 11 teams in 2007. There were 5 teams filled with Roland-Story kids, the most ever. Gilbert had 4 teams, and South Hamilton had two. The Cubs were the regular season winner, and represented the league in the tournament of champions in Ankeny, falling to the eventual champion in the first round. The Twins won the local post-season tourney.
In the 11 and 12 year old divsion, known as the Majors, there were 9 teams. There were 4 from Roland-Story, 3 from South Hamilton, and 2 from Gilbert. There was a 3-way tie for first in the regular season, with the Cubs, Twins, and Mets. Just like the Minors, the Cubs represented the league in Ankeny, and the Twins won the post season tournament. Both the Minors and Majors play on diamonds with 60 foot bases.
In the 13 and 14 year old divsion, known as the Juniors, the teams play on official sized diamonds, with the 90 foot bases. There were 6 teams in the league this year. Two were from Roland-Story, 2 from Gilbert, and 1 each from Colo-Nesco and South Hamilton. The Juniors have no post-season events, as their season ends when Junior High baseball begins. The Devil Rays took the regular season championship.
In the 15 and 16 year old divsion, known as the Seniors, two teams were formed with kids from all four school districts. They played in weekend tournaments in Ankeny.
The league sent its All-Stars from the 9, 10, 11, and 12 year old ages to participate in the Iowa District 3 tournament. District 3 is made of teams generally north of I-80, including the suburban Des Moines cities. The tournament consists of pool play, where a team plays 4 to 5 games in as many days against other teams in the district, with the pool winner advancing.
For the first time in the league's history, NSCLL teams finished with a .500 record in pool play. The 9s had the best success, beating Ames twice, as well as Ankeny, to advance out of pool play. The team also had the league's first win ever outside of pool play, defeating Urbandale, before falling to Marshalltown.
The 12 year old division is what is seen on ESPN in the popular Little League World Series. If a NSCLL team were to ever make it that far, they would first have to win their local pool, then win the District 3, then win the state of Iowa, and then win the Central Region before moving to the finals in Williamsport, PA. Teams from Davenport, Marshalltown, and Davis County, Iowa have all had good runs to Williamsport in recent years.
There were 190 league games this year, which needs a lot of support from coaches, umpires, parents in concession stands, and caretakers of the baseball fields. The league is a private organization which operates on money from the $25 player fee, concession stand income, donations, and financial support from the cities they play in.
Signups for next year take place in February, with drafts and first practices taking place in March. The league uses a continuous batting order to allow opportunities for players of all skill levels to participate, as well as having minimum inning playing requirements. For more information, see the league website at www.eteamz.com/nscll.

Year end tourney update
The Majors tourney has been set. The NSCLL board chose to award the Mets a win for their unplayed game with the Rangers. That forced a 3 way tie for first place with the Cubs, Twins, and Mets all finishing 13-3. As all 3 teams went 1-1 against each other on the year, that forced the next tie break, a coin flip.
So at 8PM Sunday, Board President Tony Gustafson, Vice President Bob Ellis, and Umpire-in-Chief Roger Fritz met at the Roland pool, with various witnesses present for the tie breaking coin flip. The odd coin out was to be awarded the win. Gustafson flipped for the Mets and got a tails, Fritz flipped for the Twins and got a tails, and Ellis flipped for the Cubs and got a heads, awarding the 1st place to the Cubs, who will be heading to Ankeny for the Tournament of Champions.
The tie break for 2nd place went to the Twins, which was determined last Friday by the closing price of the US Cellular stock. The stock price was used as a virtual tie break. An odd finish price gave the win to the higher alphabetical team, an even finish price gave the win to the lower alphabetical team. The price closed at $86.06, giving the win to the Twins who were lower alphabetically than the Mets.
In our local Majors tournament, the Yankees will host the Braves on Wednesday at 8PM in Story City. The Cardinals will host the Royals on Wednesday at Ellsworth at 6PM. The Twins will host the Rangers at 6PM in Roland on Wednesday. And for now, the Mets will be the home team at Story City at 6PM against the Pirates. If field space and umpires become available, the game may be moved to Jewell, to give the Mets the game on their own field.
In the MINORS, the Tigers will host the Reds at 6PM in Gilbert on Tuesday. The White Sox will host the Red Sox at 6PM at Story City.
Then on Thursday, the Orioles will host the WS/RS winner at 6PM in Gilbert. The A's will host the Tigers/Reds winner at a field to be determined. The Marlins will host the Rockies at 6PM at Story City. The Twins will host the Pirates at Ellsworth at 6:30 PM. Note the later than usual start time.
All Friday and Saturday game locations will be determined by Wednesday and Thursday winners.
Remember pitch rest rules with games every other day!

January 7 NSCLL Board Meeting
The Roland field will be available in 2006, however the league will be installing a fence to separate the field from the construction going on at the middle school.
There will be no pre-season games with Boone this year due to conflicting schedules. Opening date is projected to be April 14 or 16.
An all-coach pre-draft meeting will be held on Thursday March 1 at 7PM at the Roland Middle School. All coaches must attend one of the following coaches meetings-Thursday March 22 at Roland Middle School 7PM, or Sunday March 25 at Story City American Legion at 1PM.
The league will distribute a coaches evaluation form to all parents at the conclusion of the season. This will be used to help league officials determine training needs for coaches, and if retention of a coach for the following season is appropriate.
All teams will be issued a pitch count form. Starting in 2007, due to new pitch count rules, managers, or their representative, will meet pregame to view each other's pitch count form. Each manager will announce who is ineligible to pitch for that game.
During the game, the home team scorekeeper will be the official keeper of the pitch count, though the visitors are also encouraged to keep count as well. The home team may provide a book-keeper and separate pitch counter if volunteers are available.
At the end of each half inning, or pitching change, the official pitch counter must announce the half inning and total game pitch total for that pitcher to both teams and to the home plate umpire. In case of disputes on pitch totals, the home plate umpire will make the final decision based on information presented to him/her.
After the game, the team pitching log must be filled in and signed by both managers.

League Tournament Dates set
The North Story Little League Majors and Minors Tournament dates have been set.
Majors and Minors each have 9 Teams. The regular season league champ from each divsion will go to Ankeny to play in the District 3 Tournament of Champions, leaving 8 teams in each division for our local tournament. So the 2nd place team will have the 1 seed, and the 9th place team will have the 8 seed.
Majors-quarterfinals on Wednesday June 14, semis on Friday June 16, and Finals at 8PM at the Carousel Field in Story City on Monday June 19.
Minors-quarterfinals on Thursday June 15, semis on Saturday June 17, and Finals at 6PM at the Carousel Field in Story City on Monday June 19.
The higher seed will get to play on a home field, if field space is available, in the quarter, and semi finals. The higher seed will be the home team, no matter where the game is played.
Regular season pitching rules apply--pitchers limited to 6 innings in a calendar week, 4 days rest (even into the next calendar week) needed if a pitcher goes 4 or more innings. Unless rain extends the tournament, a good rule of thumb is that any pitcher appearing in 4 or more innings in a game will not be eligible to pitch in the next round of the tournament.
Pairings and field locations will be announced on June 13.

All-Star info
All minor and major teams (except those based in Gilbert, who has chosen not to participate) should hold their all star voting during the week of June 4. Please turn in the selections to League President Tony Gustafson by June 12.
Every player on a minors team will vote for a 9 and 10 year old representative. Every player on a majors team will vote for an 11 and 12 year old representative. IMPORTANT: Age is league age, not necessarily current age. Coaches, you should have this info from your draft, if not, age is the players age on May 1, 2006.
The regular season champion manager in each division gets the option of choosing which, if any, age group he would like to manage. The 2nd place teams manager gets the remaining team if he wishes. This will continue down the line in the standings if any preceding manager declines the opportunity to manage. The manager can also choose his 2 other coaches. They may be different than his regular season coaches if he wishes.
All All-Star managers must attend the All-Star meeting in Ankeny. All-Star games start July 5, and continue each night that week, with some games on NSCLL fields, and others on the road.
The 11 and 12 year old All Stars will have 7 players on each team from team elections. The managers will then choose at least 5 at-large picks from any participating team in the league. The 9 and 10 year old All Stars will have 7 players on each team from team elections. The managers will then choose at least 5 at-large picks from any participating team in the league. Minimum team size is 12 players. At large picks and team size above 12 players is totally at the managers discretion.
Little League tournament play does not use continuous batting order and minimum play requirements are less than the regular season. Players will need to purchase an All Star jersey at approximately $20 and provide a birth certificate.
Sunday, April 23
TOC and All Stars opponents announced.
On April 23, at the District 3 Presidents meeting, the pairings for the Tournament of Champions and All Stars games were selected. The selections were literally drawn from a hat.

Our NSCLL Majors division champ will play the Urbandale American League champ on the evening of June 16. The winner will advance to play another opponent.
About 2 weeks later will be the All Stars tournament. One player from each team in the NSCLL will be selected for each age category All-Star team, in a vote taken by that team's players. 2006 Age change
The NSCLL board has set the policy for age and division assignment for the 2006 season. It is in alignment with the new policy from Little League International. So for 2006, with the exception of kids born in late April, their league age will match their actual age for the whole season. Because of this age change, some players will get 3 years in their current division.
For one year only, and in alignment with policy from Little League International, the NSCLL will allow players born from May 1 to July 31, 1997 to participate in the minors division.
For this year only, players born between May 1 and July 31 of 1995, 1993, and 1991 have the option of playing in the minors/majors, majors/juniors, or juniors/seniors respectively. Selection for All-Stars will be in the division chosen for the entire season. Parents and players must decide their chosen division at signup. Contact a board member, or email us for further clarification.

He had new site plans drawn up by Fox Engineering showing 6 fields to be implemented over a period of time; focusing on improving the 3 existing fields first. The board agreed to get a cost estimate from Fox in order to proceed with the project. Boyd has been the main contact for this project keeping the City of Story City involved and the schools and would appreciate not being the primary this year.
Decisions on player participation with new age date implementation this year were made to: have the kids play at league age by May 1; and: kids that would be the age of 9 by July 31 are eligible to play; Eric Weaver made the motion and Charlie Good seconded.
Guest Doug Darland from South Hamilton was present to update us on the status of their involvement. He is hoping to have 2 to 3 more teams for this season.

Tim Day paid $400.00 towards the purchase of the Gilbert uniforms from last year and will make up the difference at the next meeting.
Old Business: players pool which was tabled for another meeting.
New Business: Roger Fritz agreed to contact the Boone organization for early season games like in the past keeping the same parameters and the games do not count in league standings. Charlie Good mentioned Marshalltown wanting to do the same with us and he will follow up on that as well.
The dues will remain the same as last year.
Barry Muhlenburg made it known, for thought, that he and Roger Fritz will need assistance with the scheduling and umpires tasks for this year.
The next meeting is scheduled for Sunday, January 8, 2006, 6:30 p.m. @ HOIC boardroom in Roland.

On Saturday, March 5, the Roland-Story based kids attended a skills assessment at the high school gym. Approximately 100 kids attended, and participated in fielding, catching, throwing, batting, running, and pitching drills. Gilbert and South Hamilton kids also did so in their respective gyms.
The drafts are complete as well as the rosters of 28 teams and over 315 kids, another record number, for the NSCLL.
March 20, 2005 Board Meeting
The board met on March 20, here are the topics with the biggest discussions. The group reviewed the tentative schedule and number of games. Team pictures will be set up for April 23 and April 30. Field clean up will be on April 2. Ted Hammes will be handling the East Diamond and HS Field, volunteers are needed for the Carousel and Roland Middle School fields.
February 20 board meeting
The board worked on estimating the number of teams this season, and determining coaching slots. The group also worked on helpers during the skills assessment on March 5 at the Roland-Story High School gym. 9/10s will be 9AM, 11/12s at 11AM, 13/14s at 1PM, and 15/16s at 3PM.

Pictures for teams will tentatively be either April 23 or April 30.
Gilbert is working on to see if they can use the school's 90 foot diamond for 13-14 games.
13/14 Juniors will now have a time limit on their games. It will be the same as the Majors-no inning starts after 2 hours, and a hard stop will take place at 2.5 hours, with the score reverting to the last completed inning.
January 30 board meeting
Locations for signups and skills assessments have been confirmed. Gilbert and South Hamilton dates are being worked on.
Sign up fees were set. $25 for Roland-Story based teams, $35 for Gilbert and South Hamilton based teams due to not have concession stands to generate income for the league, and $50 for the 15-16 Senior League players, due to the need to pay umpires.
There will be a coaches clinic available to league coaches on Feb 12 in Ames. Contact a board member for more info.
January 16, 2005 board meeting
The board reaffirmed the inclusion of teams from the Gilbert area, as well as adding teams from South Hamilton, instead of having those players in just the general draft.

2004 Review
The North Story County Little League had its most participants ever. Approximately 275 kids between the ages of 9 and 16 participated on one of the 23 teams. Parents and other interested persons volunteered for coaches, field prep, umpires, and concessions.
The NSCLL fielded its first teams in the 15 and 16 age group. The league had a website for the first time with scores, standings, and news. Plans continued to move forward for more fields in Story City.
May 19 board meeting
The NSCLL board met on May 19. Schedules for the league tournaments were finalized. The juniors will play a single elimination tournament on the weekend of Scandanavian days, with losers bracket games to determine place.
The majors will play a single elimination tournament starting on June 14 and ending on June 22. The highest finishing team, with the proper number of 11 year olds, will not participate in this tournament, and will instead go to the Tournament of Champions in Ankeny.
The minors tournament is double elimination and will begin on June 12 and end on either June 19 or 21.
The board made a special motion to enforce the no swinging of bats outside dugouts, as per the LL Rule Book. Assistance in compliance is requested by coaches and umpires.
Approval of contributing $600 to the purchase of clay for the high school diamond was approved. The next meeting will be after the mandatory coaches meeting on Wednesday, June 2.
Procedure for electing All-Stars was discussed. There will be 4 all star teams: 9, 10, 11, and 12s. The age is determined by the player's age on 8-1-2004. Each minor team's players will elect two 9 year olds, and two 10 year olds. The coaching staff of each all star team will select 4 additional at large players from remaining players, for each team.
In the majors, each team's players will elect one 11 year old, and one 12 year old. The coaching staff of each all star team will select 4 additional at large players from remaining players, for each team. It is our current understanding that 10 year olds playing on a majors team will need to be selected as an at large player for the 10 year old team, and will be ineligible to play on an 11 year old team, despite having played with that age group during the regular season.
March 18 board meeting
The NSCLL board held a meeting on March 18. Topics discussed were priorites of expenditures from fundraising, late registering player assignments, 2004 ground rules, and scheduling (both games and field availability). Team name assignments were clarified for both teams from the Colo-Nesco area (Royals) and the Nevada area (Cubs).
Tentative season schedules will have 10 minors games, 18 majors games and 10 juniors games, not counting season ending tournaments for the minors and majors. Senior games are still being worked on. Approximately 160 regular season games will make up the 2004 NSCLL schedule.
Skills Assessment in Story City
The Skills Assessment was held on March 6 at the Roland-Story High School gym. Though not all players attended, over 100 kids in the four different age groups tried out. Players were timed running bases, they did fielding drills, hit balls into a net, and interested kids pitched off a portable mound. This allowed the coaches to get a feel for the kids' talents, and will hopefully lead to balanced teams.
Several volunteers manned the various stations for the kids, and NSCLL board members held informational meetings for the parents during the tryouts.
Though subject to change, and including teams from all towns in the league, there will be six 9-10s, nine 11-12s, six 13-14s, and two 15-16s. Most teams will have eleven or twelve players. With the exception of umpires in the 15-16s, all coaches, league officials, concession workers, umpires, and field maintenance people in the North Story County Little League are volunteers. This is quite an effort by the communities in this league.
Approximately 270 kids have registered to be in North Story County Little League this year.
Umpire quiz answers
1. 6.06(A) YES. The batter is out for having his foot on the ground entirely out of the batter's box when he contacted the ball. Fair or foul does not matter.
2. 6.03/6.06(a) The batter is safe. To be declared out, a batter must have a foot entirely outside the box. The line is considered part of the box.
3. 3.05a No. He must pitch to the first batter, or his substitute, until such batter is put out or reaches base.
4. 6.08d The ball is alive and in play since it has passed an infielder. Runners advance at their own risk.
January Board Meeting Notes
Two separate meetings were held in January. Some of the things reviewed were: Planning work for new fields in western Story City, improving safety on existing fields in Story City and Roland, setting the dates for signups, tryouts, draft, and field maintenance, coach and umpire training, first aid kits, concessions, and fund raising.
Contact a board member if you would like to assist on any of these tasks/projects.
February 4 Board Meeting Notes
The board met on Wednesday, February 4. Here are some of the highlights. The board approved the addition of a Sr. League, which is teams for kids aged 15-16. This league will have a higher registration fee, as the board felt in necessary to pay for umpires at this level. The season is expected to last from late April, to late May.
The board also approved a registration fee for all other levels at $25. Dates were set for registration, skills assessment, draft, coach and umpire training, and field prep days (see Calendar link to left).
Other topics included sticking with 3 coaches being able to align preseason, the requirement of all coaches to umpire at least 2 games (out of division), Gilbert and Colo-Nesco registration, and a review of the first draft of the newsletter.
Feb 18 Board Meeting Notes
Here are some highlights of the Feb. 18 board meeting. The board approved a fee of $50 for the 15-16 year old division. The higher price was mainly to cover the cost of umpires in this division. A 15-16 year old tournament on June 6-7 was also considered as a fund raising mechanism.
There was a review of the upcoming schedule, and duties for various members at the registration, skills assessment, and draft. Player agents for the various age groups are Dennis Neutzman for the 9-10, Chris Booth for the 11-12, Bob Harris for the 13-14, and Roger Fritz for the 15-16. Schedules will be drawn up on a number basis (ie: 1-8)when the number of teams is determined. Then coach/teams will be randomly assigned to a number, to determine their schedule.
The newsletter was mailed out, as well as distributed via school. Notices were also posted in the Story City Herald, and on KQWC radio. Based on growth curve, 240 kids are expected to be in the program this year, with new teams from the Colo-Nesco and Nevada areas.
The board also approved the requirement that all coaches are to umpire one game behind the plate, or two on the bases, in an effort to gain an appreciation for umpire position. Games to be umpired will be out of division. Dates were also set for coaching and umpiring training.
Feb 29 Board meeting notes
The board reviewed the initial numbers of kids signed up. Though subject to change, it appears there will be 6 teams in the 9-10, 8 teams in the 11-12, 6 teams in the 13-14, and 2 teams in the 15-16. Registration will still be accepted through the skills assessment on the 6th of March.
The 1st coaches meeting on March 3 has been moved to the Roland Middle School multi-purpose room at 7PM.
The board approved purchase of new scoreboards for the East Diamond, and the Carousel Field if donors for the funding of those specific projects can be secured.
The regular season champs in the 9-10 and 11-12 Divisions will advance to the District Tournament of Champions. The remaining teams will participate in a tournament on NSCLL fields.
2003 Season wrapup
2003 saw NSCLL with its largest participation ever. The league increased from 13 teams and 158 players in 2002, to 18 teams and 208 players in 2003. There were 175 games played at fields in Roland, Story City, Gilbert, and Nevada, along with tournaments in Boone and Marshalltown.
