Norton Middle School Wildcats: My Site News
First Day of Conditioning
We kick off our summer conditioning program on June 5th from 6:00 - 7:30 pm. Each athlete will be receiving their helmet and their locker that day. Also, we will be having the Wildcat Draft in which each coach selects their team for the summer. Each team will get points for attendance everyday, bringing the right equipment, mini competitions against the other teams, and overall performance. Be ready to go... this summer is where it all starts!

Fundraiser Information
We will be participating in two fundraisers this year to help raise money for our football team. We will be selling subs sponsored by W.G. Grinders and we will be selling discount cards that contain great deals from local businesses. You have the choice to sell subs only, cards only, or both. How does this help your child? Here is how it works...
For every sub or card sold (subs are $5.00 and cards are $10.00), your child will receive $1.00 towards the price of their Pay to Participate Fee ($75.00) and $1.00 towards the price of their Wildcat Camp fee ($40.00). For example, if your child sells 20 subs or 20 cards, we would subtract $20.00 from their Pay to Participate Fee AND $20.00 from their Wildcat Camp fee. That would bring your totals down to $55.00 for the Pay to Participate and $20.00 for the Wildcat Camp fee. It's a sweet deal that requires very little work!
Both the sub sale and the card sale kick off June 5th and will end on July 3rd. All sales are pre-sale only. ALL MONEY FOR BOTH THE SUBS AND CARDS ARE DUE JULY 3RD!!!! Subs will be made on Saturday, July 14th and the cards will also be delivered July 14th.
Tuesday, May 22
Locks
As the athletes are assigned lockers, it is a REQUIREMENT that each athlete have a lock on their locker. They will be given school issued equipment in which they are responsible. The easiest way to take care of their equipment is to lock it up. Missing items are the responsibility of the athlete and will be paid for by the athlete. Locks solve a lot of problems when it comes to equipment.

Summer Attendance
Although the summer conditioning program is voluntary and mandatory attendance doesn't start till July 30th, it is very important that your child participate in as many practices as possible during the summer. We get 10 "camp days", which are days that we are allowed to use footballs and actually coach them in drills and plays. We intend to use each and everyone of those days during the summer. We want to match the kids faces' to their talent. We want to start to put each kid in a position as early as we can on both offense and defense. The more they show up and the more they show how dedicated they are, the more playing time they will see come fall... it's that simple. If you are going on vacation, please go on vacation. If you have to leave town for a couple of days, leave town. We want kids to be kids. But if they are not busy, we really want them to be a part of what we are doing every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. For the Wildcat Camp, attendance is strongly suggested. Those who attend camp will play and those who do not will have to work their way up the ranks. We look forward to seeing your child throughout the summer!

Cleats for Sale
As kids get older and grow bigger, they tend to grow out of their cleats from previous seasons. Here at Norton, we collect those cleats that no longer fit the old owner and sell them back to our current players. No matter the size, brand, original cost, or condition, each pair of cleats is $25.00 and it is a first come first served policy. Cash only please. Parents are more than welcome to come up and see what we have and what would be the best fit for their child. For example, an $85.00 of Nikes sold for $25.00 last year... that saves the parents $60.00! You can't beat this deal. Get them before they go!
Tuesday, May 22
Physicals
Each athlete is required to have a physical by a certified doctor to ensure that each athlete is physically fit enough to participate in football or any other sport offered by Southwestern City Schools. Physicals must be completed and turned into the coaches by July 30th. All athletes who have not received a physical before July 30th will sit out of all football related activities until the physical is conducted and the paperwork is received by the coaches. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Locker Room Makeover
We will be painting the locker room on Sunday, June 3rd at 9:00 am if anyone is interested in coming over and helping give our boys a locker room they can be proud of. The locker room now is bland and bare. We are going to liven things up a bit by adding fresh paint to the walls and putting some motivational quotes on the walls as well. We will be cleaning the lockers, wiping them down, and getting things ready for the first day of conditioning June 5th. Us coaches will be there and we are inviting anyone who wants to come and help. Bring your coffee, bring your breakfast, bring your kid and help us re-do the locker room.
Wednesday, May 30
7 on 7 Scrimmage
We will be attending the Grove City Christian 7 on 7 Passing Scrimmage on Monday, July 9 from 5-7 pm. A 7 on 7 passing scrimmage is a two-hand touch scrimmage with only the QB's, running backs, center, and receivers on offense and linebackers, corner backs and safeties on defense. It helps us develop our passing game in a game type atmosphere with game type situations. We will meet in the Norton parking lot at 4:00 pm and will leave at 4:10 pm. We will need drivers to help drive our kids. Us coaches will drive as well. Please let us know if you are able to attend and are available to drive. More information will be given as the summer goes on.
Tuesday, June 12
Q and A with Championship Caliber Fundraising
After practice on Tuesday, June 12th @ 7:15 pm, we will have a short meeting with the fundraising representative to go over important information regarding our discount cards. He will have the final list of vendors and their discounts and will answer any questions you may have regarding the sale. The meeting will start immediately after practice on the field. Hope to see you there!

4th of July Parade
This Saturday, June 30th at 8:00 am, we will be participating in the WABA 4th of July Parade. This will be a good experience for the kids as we walk amongst the community in our Norton Blue and White. We will meet at 8:00 am in the W.G. Grinders parking lot on West Broad Street and the official start time is 9:00 am. I will be bringing jerseys for the the kids to wear as they walk in the parade. The parade path will start in the W.G. Grinders parking lot and will end right here at Norton Middle School. It will be a short walk for those participating. I encourage all players to show up and give their support not only to their team, but to their community as well. Players can bring candy if they wish to throw candy to the spectators. But I suggest that all players bring something to drink. Although it is early in the morning, it will still be muggy and hot. So come out and join us as we walk in the WABA 4th of July parade this Saturday. Any questions, please feel free to ask the coaches.
Wednesday, June 27
Fundraising Deadline
Just a reminder that the sub sale and the card sale is coming to an end soon. ALL MONEY and FORMS ARE DUE ON TUESDAY, JULY 3RD at 6:00 pm at Norton. Our school accountant will be here to collect the money along with Coach Rutan to ensure that your money ends up in the right hands safely. There will be no money collected after the 3rd of July. If you are unable to bring your money on this date, please turn it in early to Coach Rutan. Keep in mind, you still have time to make those last efforts to sell as much as possible. Any questions, please see Coach Rutan.
Wednesday, June 27
No Practice on July 3rd
There will be no practice on Tuesday July 3rd. The only reason to come to Norton will be to drop off your fundraising money and forms. Practice will resume Thursday July 5th.
Wednesday, June 27
Passing Scrimmage on July 9th
Due to the number of teams that will be at the passing scrimmage, we are unable to take every player. Those who will be going will be notified on Friday July 6th after practice. We will meet in the Norton parking lot at 4:00 and will leave at 4:10. We are in need for parents to drive to help caravan kids to the scrimmage and back. The scrimmage will be from 5-7 at Grove City Christian School located on Hoover Road in Grove City. Any questions, please see Coach Rutan.
Friday, June 29
Practice is CANCELLED!!!!
Due to severe weather, practice for Friday, June 29th is cancelled. Practice on Tuesday is cancelled but anyone who owes money for either subs or discount cards is expected to turn in all money and forms to Coach Rutan at 6:00 pm at Norton Middle School. Practice will resume on Thursday, July 5th at the normally scheduled time.
Friday, July 6
July 6 Practice
Practice for Friday, July 6th is still on. We are well aware that the temperature is supposed to reach 100+ today and we are going to accommodate our players accordingly. Today's practice will be without helmets and there will be very little to no conditioning with plenty of water breaks. Today's goal will simply be to understand the ins and outs of our base defense. That means that the kids will do more standing around while learning valuable and important information about our defense as opposed to running. The only running they will do today will be their warm-up lap and whatever running occurs during our 7 on 7 scrimmage with those kids going on Monday to Grove City Christian's passing scrimmage. Those not involved in the 7 on 7 scrimmage will be playing Cougar Ball and doing a trash walk. As you can see, we can still have significant progress even when the weather is not cooperative. Regardless of the temperature, we still have to get the kids accustomed to hot temperatures for when they have full pads on while practicing.
Friday, July 6
Wildcat Football Camp and Westland Camp
Our Wildcat Football Camp is fast approaching. We cannot stress how important it is that your child be in attendance. During this time, we will be putting in all of our offensive and defensive plays, along with our special teams plays. Also during this time, we will be placing people in their actual positions and the kids will be competing for spots on the Varsity and JV teams. Those athletes who are not at camp will miss out on valuable playing time during the season due to the fact that they will miss an entire week of practice and valuable information pertaining to our offensive and defense schemes. Camp will be July 16-20 from 4:00 - 8:00 pm. The cost is $40.00 which gets your child their official team dri-fit t-shirt and shorts and a team meal on Friday after camp is completed. Please have your child show up early on Monday, July 16th so they can get registered before they report to the locker room. Those who do not pay for camp will not be permitted into practice. On Monday, July 23rd, we will be attending the Westland High School Football Camp in which our kids will have the opportunity to work with the Varsity Coaches and their players on specific drills for both offense and defense. The cost of this camp is $15.00. The kids will receive a t-shirt at the end of camp on Wednesday. From there, the kids will have the rest of the week off to rest for Monday's first official day of practice for the 2012 season. Fees for both camps are due the first day of each respective camp. If you sold subs or cards, you will receive a notice for your exact amount that is owed for camp before the end of next week. Your notice will show your discount for your efforts in the fundraiser.
Friday, July 13
Sub Making Day Saturday July 14th
Sub Making Day will be tomorrow at 10:00 am in the Norton cafeteria. We ask that all athletes be in the locker room by 9:45 so we can go over the procedure for the day's events. Not only are we making our subs, we are also passing out their equipment such as pads, practice jerseys and pants, and game jerseys. From what I get from the kids, they are super excited to pick their number for the year. Here is how that will work... the order of who gets to pick their jersey is very specific. We reward people who show commitment to our team. Athletes who sold fundraiser items will go first based on the number sold. The second group to pick will our 8th graders from last year's team. The third group will be the 8th graders who did not play last year, followed by the 7th graders. That is how we have done it in the past and that is how it will be done this year as well.
If you sold subs, please be here no later than 11:30 am to pick up your subs. Those who do not pick their subs up before noon on Saturday will have to wait till 4:00 on Monday to get them. And with no refrigerators up and working in the school during the summer, your subs will not be of great quality when you deliver them.
Monday, July 30
Physicals due by Wednesday
As part of the requirements by the OHSAA, each member of the football team must have a physical on file before they are allowed to participate in contact drills. If a player does not have a physical on file before Wednesday of this week, they will be forced to sit out until that paperwork is in hand of Coach Rutan. If your child needs a physical, please call your physician, the local urgent care, or a clinic at Walgreens or CVS. Any questions, please see Coach Rutan for more information.
Monday, July 30
Acclimation Days
For the official start of the season, we have to abide by a set of rules when it comes to acclimation days. The acclimation period is the first 6 days of the season. The reason for acclimation days is to get the kids accustomed to their equipment before contact drills are done. Here is a breakdown of what we must follow.
Day 1: Helmets only
Day 2: Helmets only
Day 3: Helmets and Shoulder Pads
Day 4: Helmets and Shoulder Pads
Day 5: Full gear, no contact
Day 6: First day of contact allowed
The other part of the rule can be complicated and it goes as follows... if at any period of the first six days in which a child misses practice, he or she must start where they left off until they have completed the acclimation days in order. For example, lets say your child shows up Monday with helmets only and goes on vacation for the next three days and returns on Friday. Most would think that your child would wear full gear with no contact since its the 5th day of practice. That is not the case. It's the 5th day of practice for the team... its the 2nd day of practice for your child. That means that they would have to wait till the following Wednesday to hit. This may result in your child sitting out of drills due to them not being able to hit, which also may result in loss of position until the acclimation days are completed in order. It's confusing. If you have any questions, please see Coach Rutan.
Wednesday, August 1
August 1st Practice
Practice for August 1st will be shortened to 6:30. Three of the coaches on the coaching staff are taking a class to be certified coaches. Therefore, practice will end early. Before the kids leave practice today, they will be dressing in full gear in preparation for Friday. We will be checking to make sure all pads fit correctly before they start hitting on Saturday.
Wednesday, August 1
Physicals
Those kids who do not have an up to date physical on file with the school will be sitting out of practice today and everyday until the physical is turned in. There are a few kids who will be receiving their physicals back in order to obtain the doctor's information on the proper physical form. Although the doctor cleared them to participate in football, the Ohio High School Athletic Association, the governing body for all school sponsored athletics, requires that the information be on the proper paperwork... this was the form that was on the back of your packet at the beginning of summer. The good news is that those kids will not be held out of practice. But that information does need to be transferred over BEFORE our first game on the 23rd of August.
Wednesday, August 1
Mandatory Parent Meeting
There will be a mandatory drug, alcohol, and concussion meeting for all parents of a fall athlete here at Norton Middle School. This meeting will review the policies set forth by the district in the areas of drug use, alcohol use, citizenship, and concussions and there will be a short video pertaining to these policies. The meeting will be Saturday, August 11th at 9:00 am sharp. Those parents who miss the meeting will have to schedule an appointment with the office to review the policies and video. If these policies are not reviewed before the first game, your child will not be eligible to participate. Any questions please see Coach Rutan.
Wednesday, August 1
Community Day and Team Potluck
On August 11th, immediately following our drug, alcohol, and concussion meeting, we will be having our annual Community Day and Team Potluck. Each year, we provide the team an opportunity to give something back to their community and school. This year is no different. We will be painting the concession stand, painting paw prints on the pathway leading to the field, and giving our field a general makeover. We encourage as many parents as possible to lend a hand all while meeting other parents and getting to know the players on the team. For all the hard work, we will be having a potluck lunch afterwards in the cafeteria. We are asking 7th grade athletes to bring drinks, and 8th grade athletes to bring a main dish. The coaches will provide the hamburgers and hotdogs. All athletes are expected to be there. So come on out and get to know the rest of the Norton Football Family! Any questions please see Coach Rutan.

Success Beyond the Classroom Scholarship Form
Due to horrible timing, the SBC Scholarship form was given to us today and is due to Coach Rutan by tomorrow at the end of practice. They will be collected on Friday morning by a district representative. The scholarship form gives the opportunity to have money deducted from your Participation Fee. Not all athletes will receive money but those athletes who do will receive no more than $50 towards their fee. If it is not in by tomorrow after practice, the form will not be reviewed by the district for consideration. No exceptions.
Thursday, August 2
Participation Fee Date
The Participation Fee is due Friday, August 17th. The absolute last day to pay this is 4:00 pm on August 23rd, the day of our first game. The district has taken the policy that if a child does not pay by 4:00 pm on the day of the first game, that child will be removed from the team permanently without the possibility of returning to the team later in the season... no exceptions. Just a heads up, if you turn in the SBC Scholarship form, you may receive last minute notice of the decision made by the district regarding your amount given. Like I said earlier, you may or may not receive funds for the scholarship. Regardless, a bill will be passed out on Saturday, August 11th after our drug and alcohol meeting that will indicate how much you owe for your participation fee. Keep in mind, the district is holding a very strict policy on the due dates of these fees.
Thursday, August 2
Game Socks
Each child will be getting a pair of white game socks and blue game socks that are to be used for games only. Both pair of socks are a total of $10.00. Socks should be here in a few weeks. I will notify the team of when the money is due for the socks. If a pair of socks are lost, the replacement socks will be $5.00 per pair.
Thursday, August 2
$1.00 or full price... you decide!
Due to the fact that there are 60+ kids on the team with multiple pieces of equipment, full responsibility lies with each player for their own equipment. There are two rules that we have that help with that. I check the locker room every night after practice to see what has been left out. If for some reason that a piece of equipment is left out of their locker after practice and I put it in the equipment cage, the player that it belongs to has to pay me $1.00 to get it back. I look at it like this... they have two options when it comes to left out items. First, they can pay $1.00 to get their equipment back so that they can continue to practice and be thankful that I check the locker room after each practice. Or, option two, they can continue to leave things out and pay full price for a piece of equipment that they are responsible for once it is given to them. After thinking about it, the usually opt for the $1.00 policy as opposed to the full price option. Keep in mind, every piece of equipment, whether it's their personal item or a school issued item, is documented by me. I know exactly what I am getting back at the end of the year from each athlete. In order to maintain responsibility for their equipment, this policy has been around for a few years now and it is surprisingly effective. The goal here is not to make money off of the kids... trust me, that is not an effective way to raise funds. The point is that the kids need to make sure that they LOCK EVERYTHING UP BEFORE THEY LEAVE. If it's locked up, then there isn't any way that their equipment will become lost. If it is stolen by another teammate and I can prove that it was stolen, the $1.00 fee will be waived and that member of the team that stole it will be removed from the team immediately without question. To make a long note short, if it's yours, lock it up and we will never have this discussion.

Policies Meeting and Community Day Potluck
Just a reminder that the Drug, Alcohol, and Concussion meeting will be this Saturday, August 11th starting at 9:00 am sharp. This is a required meeting for all parents for those participating in fall sports here at Norton. The school administration will be reviewing the district policies on drugs, alcohol, and citizenship. They will also be going through the procedure for concussions and the steps that will be taken in such circumstances. Following the meeting, we invite all parents to come out to the field as we do our best to prepare our field for the season ahead. We will be painting the concession stand, painting paw prints on the path towards the field, and doing other things that are going to make our field look great. It will be a great time for the parents to meet eachother all while getting to know the kids on the team. Please bring the following items if you wish... weed whackers, air blowers for removing gravel and sand, paint brushes, paint trays, gardening gloves, push brooms, ladders, power washers, and anything else you may want to bring that you think would help with the project.
After the work is done, we will be having a potluck lunch for all the workers. Keep in mind that 7th graders are to bring drinks and 8th graders are to bring a main dish of some sort. We do have access to the walk-in fridge just in case you need to keep something cool. We will also be forming a parents booster group that will work together to make pregame snacks for the kids, 50/50 raffles, and other things for the team. If you are interested in donating your time to this group, our kids will surely benefit.

August 18th Scrimmage @ WJMS
The kids will be meeting at Norton at 8:00 am on Saturday, August 18th in preparation for our scrimmage at West Jefferson Middle School. The bus will leave at 8:30 am in hopes that we will be at West Jeff around 9:00 am. Please have the kids eat something decent before arriving at school. Due to the fact that we do not have an individual 7th grade team, we are only scheduled one 8th grade scrimmage each year. This particular scrimmage allows some room for the JV team to get a chance to scrimmage as well. The Varsity team will be scrimmaging Fairbanks, Madison Plains, and West Jeff all while rotating in first and second teams. The fourth round of scrimmaging will be feature the JV team against our first opponent... whomever that may be. Regardless, everyone on the team will go in full gear. Unfortunately, playing time will not be equal. Any questions, please see Coach Rutan.

Concussion or headache?
Lately, there have been a few kids who have had to sit out of practice due to headaches from contact. We are and will take every precaution necessary to protect kids from head injuries. With all the news of concussions in the headlines today, we are no different here at Norton. Just to be clear, if a child takes themselves out of a practice due to a headache, we are going to assume concussion like symptoms. That means that they sit out of practice for the remainder of the day. Then we wait until the symptoms have subsided. From that point we put them through a series of tests that span about 4 or 5 days. We slowly work them back into football shape as long as they are not having symptoms. The moment they have symptoms again is the time that we start the process all over again. The hard part about this is that headaches are quite common in football and it is extremely difficult to judge whether a kid just has a simple headache or has concussion like symptoms. That is where we will let the kids be the judge. They will know very quickly if its a common headache or if something doesn't feel right and they have sustained a slight concussion. Once we get word from the kid that its more than a headache, we start the process for rehabilitation. That roughly means that they will sit out for at least a week without practicing. Unfortunately, that means playing time and positions will be compromised. To be honest, I know it matters a lot to the kids, but that doesn't mean a whole lot to us... we will always do what's best for the kid regardless of playing time. Head injuries are nothing to mess with and we will do everything in our power to treat them appropriately.

Pay to Participate Dates
I have received the Scholarship Award results and will be passing out final bills for the Pay to Participate fee sometime this week. I know the date to pay the fee is this Friday, August 17th but the office said that they will take fee money this coming Monday, August 20th during schedule pickup. Please keep in mind that if the fee is not paid by 4:00 pm on the day of our first game (August 23rd), he or she will be PERMANENTLY REMOVED from the team by the district... this is not a team or a school rule. Please make plans to have those fees paid on time. Any questions, see Coach Rutan.
Monday, August 13
Socks
Game socks will be in this week. The cost for socks is $10.00 per athlete. This will get them a pair of white game socks and a pair of royal blue game socks. A couple of things about the socks... they are a part of our official uniform and are not to be worn at any other time outside of our games. I will not give anyone socks on the day of a game due to forgetfulness, socks being lost, or any other reason. They are the responsibility of the athlete. I have a very limited amount of socks that I have ordered and those who lose their socks will have to pay for them in full before receiving their new pair. It is on a first come, first served basis. Once the stock is gone, you will be responsible for replacing them on your own. I will start collecting money this week. Socks will not be passed out until they are paid for.
Monday, August 13
THANK YOU!!!!
Thank you to everyone who participated in this weekend's Community Day. It was a success like always and once again, we can take credit for making Norton look better each year. Keep in mind that if you are interested in participating in this year's Touchdown Club, a parent group that makes team meals for the kids and does other things that benefit the team, please contact Troy Shore, Curtiss' dad, for more information.
Monday, August 13
Scrimmage @ WJMS
This Saturday, August 18th, the athletes need to report to Norton at 8:00 am. Please make sure that they have everything they need to take with them (braces of any kind, good socks, gloves, etc). Water will be provided for them. We will be leaving the school to head to West Jeff around 8:30 am. We will not wait on anyone. We want to get to West Jeff around 9:00 am in order to properly warm up and go over some plays before we get started. We will be playing Fairbanks, Madision Plains, and West Jeff. We will be finishing up against the team we started against and that is when the JV members will be playing. Like I have said before, without having a separate 7th grade team, we can only schedule one scrimmage that primarily gears itself around the Varsity members. We will try our best to make sure that everyone has an opportunity to play... but there are no guarantees.
Tuesday, September 11
OLPH @ WHS 7:00 pm
Tonight is our 4th game against the Western Irish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The game will be at Westland High School under the lights starting at 7:00 pm. The admission prices will be the same and the Westland Concession Stands will be up and running. We hope that a lot of people will attend as it will prove to be an exciting game.
Tuesday, September 11
Team Pictures
Team pictures are tonight starting around 5:00pm. If you did not receive the picture information last week, there are extras that you can fill out if you wish for your child to have their individual pictures taken. All members of the team will be in the team photo but only the ones who pay for the individual pictures will receive a team photo.
