Northwood Hockey League: History & Awards

History of the Northwood Hockey League
The Northwood Hockey League got its start in 1970 when the Vale Community Centre put in an outdoor rink beside the community hall and started an organized recreational league for boys and girls aged 6 to 14.

The league has always been unique because players of a wide range of ages and abilities play on a single team. The league grew to 6 teams and was fortunate to move to its current home in the Fort William Gardens. In 1992 a senior divison was added for players ages 12-15, leaving the junior division for 5-11 year olds.

The senior division lasted only 3 seasons and was replaced by the current Pee Wee 'A' program that competes in the Lakehead South Minor Hockey Association.

In March of 1997 the league gained a great deal of attention when our Atom 'A' Selects made it to the final of the Elk's Atom-Tom Thumb Tournament. Although they lost the final they put the league on the map. The Selects went on to capture the Happy Time Tournament a month later. In 1998 the Selects once again played their way into the final of the Elk's tournament, making the semi-final game by scoring a goal with 2 seconds left which gave them their division by less than half a goal differnce. They were not to be denied this time around and downed the Neebing Red Wings 2-1 in the final. Later they captured their second Happy Time Tournament Championship.

The league has stabilized at 7 teams in the Northwood League and 1 Pee Wee 'A' team, the Knights.
