The Unseen HERO's
It is said that football is a game of hardy characters; young men who are tough in both body and spirit. It is probably most evident in the play of the line.
Young men who play this position give up all opportunities to score touchdowns and to get notoriety that is given to the quarterbacks, running backs, and receivers. They realize and accept the pact that their individual success is measured in terms of what the team accomplishes and not what they do individually.
Then what motivates them to work so hard and to subject themselves to the physical and mental pressures of the game? They are competitors. Being competitors they pay the price. They pay in terms of hours of hard work and practice; they pay with scrapes, bruises, and minor injuries; they pay in terms of emotion, because to them, victory is twice as sweet, but the loss is twice as hard to take. He expects to be hit because he is a hitter; he expects opponents to be tough, because he is tough; he expects to give everything and to become completely drained because he knows that under any conditions, it is not easy to win.
He lives for the competition. It is his pain and his joy; it is his frustration and his fulfillment; it enslaves him and it is his freedom to express himself. Long after the stands are emptied, the locker rooms are deserted, and everybody goes about their lives, he carries within himself the lessons he has learned; lessons that will apply to life just as they did in any game; the lessons that will enable him to handle any situation he will face in life.
