Jan. 11, 2010 President's Letter

Yes, it’s time for another Little League Season!  This year our kids will enjoy the same exciting and educational team play at a much lower cost!  We have changed our league this year in several ways that will benefit all. First off, our registration fees for almost all our divisions are less expensive than last year. The fees for T-Ball are cut in half.

S

Our Little League Charter services Hope, Blairstown, Hardwick, Knowlton and Frelinghuysen, and we welcome any children in those towns to play for us.  As the only chartered Little League in your area, your children can only enter Little League tournament play by playing in our recreation league, and each year we host as many all-star teams for tournaments as we have capable talent among our pool of playing kids.  The league hosted 27 teams last year with over a hundred volunteer coaches and assistants.  We held coach and player clinics, skill-enhancing practices, and over a dozen exciting games per team, including 7/8 under the night lights of Walnut Valley.  Our league provided 100% more Needs Scholarships compared to the prior year so that families going through financial transitions could still participate.  Only Junior Division fees remain unchanged due to costly umpire fees ($110 per home game) and uniform costs (more expensive for older children).  Registration fees do not begin to cover the cost of running this division.  Our overall expenses in running the Little League run approximately $18,000 each season.  Add to that figure the cost of replacing equipment, maintaining existing fields, and handling the surge in needs scholarships last year.

S

Even with all of this in mind, we have made it a priority to lessen our fees.  Why?  Because more kids should play in our league!  However, since the monies from lowered fees must come from somewhere, we must rely on 100% team sponsorships and, selling advertising signs at the fields.  Luckily this year we are newly registered as a 501(c)(3) which gives our league full non-profit status. That means we can now hold raffles and if everyone can pitch in to sell raffle tickets our league will continue to grow and thrive.  In order to keep our league as great as it is   at a reasonable cost we will need everyone to support our fundraising efforts.  Please use our sponsor forms under Tips and Handouts page to sign up Team Sponsors and promote field sign sales to businesses and other potential sponsors.  If you get 5 sponsors, your family's registration fees are waived!

S

Hats off to the great job they and division V.P. Donna Moore did last season and in the off-season in gaining 3 sponsors and an equipment grant to defray team costs – truly a model to emulate.  Unlike our other divisions, NWLL Challenger division has no league boundaries, so if you know of anyone who would like to play, contact us.  As always, we turn away no one.  I am happy to announce that our NWLL Challenger division returns this year at no cost to participants aged 5 to high school!!!

S

Please fill out registration, release and consent forms under Tips and Handouts page and mail them back, or signup online, or come to our in-person sign-ups on Saturday February 13 from 9 AM- 1PM at the Givens-Belet American Legion Hall at 23 Hope Road (Rt. 521) in Blairstown.  Provide copies of birth certificate for any player new to our league.  As usual, the league supplies shirts, hats, and socks.  Every player should wear baseball pants and cleats.  The coach of each team will specify which color pants the team should use.  Please note that only the 13/14 year-old division may use metal cleats, all others must use molded plastic cleats.

S

Regardless of a family’s financial situation, we will not turn any child away.  So if you know of a family where the children are not playing due to financial hardship, have them contact me, and they will receive a scholarship for the season.  All this remains strictly confidential with me.  Questions?  Contact me, Paul L. LoMonaco, President North Warren Little League at 908-362-1611, Paul.lomonaco@northwarrenlittleleague.com
