Vikings Go Down Fighting In States TA 3 - Vikings 1

Turner Ashby came to Calfee Park with their 2006 State AA Championship team with the idea that they would have a cakewalk into the finals. After all, they had dominated nearly every team they faced in 2007 with just 1 loss on their schedule. With Lefty throwing in Tuesday's 8 inning victory over VA High, Coach Cool placed the ball in Andrew Stover's hand & he delivered to everyone's delight as he ceded only 1 earned run on 6 hits through 5 2/3 Innings, giving Coach Cool, his teammates & the crowd their monies worth. Even though the Viking's season & 9 Seniors careers at Northside would end they played like winners, presented themselves like Champions & went down giving their all. Lefty would close out his great career at Northside, pitching in the bottom of the 6th - his 9-1 record this year & his dominance in District, Region & State makes him "Player Of The Year" in my book. Andrew will take his bat & arm onto other ballfields & teams but he will leave his "Viking Heart" on the field in Pulaski where he gave his all for Northside & Coach Cool one more time. Zach with his steallar defense at 3rd, Tyler making great plays in Left, Richard's clutch hits - Josh, Chris, Jake, Morgan Seniors that contributed in team play & sportsmanship...We'll miss you all & take these last two seasons & cherish every moment because Northside '06 & '07 will be talked about in baseball circles for years & you made it happen. Our Juniors (Aaron. Daniel, Roger, Matt H, Matt S, Clay, Phillip, Max, Chad), Sophomores & Freshmen of '08 - Carry on & bring home the gold next year.

Vikings 3 - VA High 1 in State Quaterfinals

As the crowd cheered 3 up, 3 down in the bottom of the 8th, Lefty Flora took the mound & calmly obliged with 2 comebackers & a flyball to Centerfield & suddenly 9 Viking Seniors were wondering what to do with their graduation robes. For the 2nd year in a row, Northside found a way to play it's way into the State Semi-final game. Great defense by Taylor Bell & Matt Herron & Lefty on the mound got the Vikings to the top of the 6th relatively unscaved except for a minor incident on a passed ball in the 4th. With the ball hitting the backstop & heading towards the 3rd base wall, Zach Hurt would be called for interference after the Bearcat runner hit him from behind while he went for the baseball. The umpire crew gave VA High the unearned run, sending the runner home. In the top of the 6th, with 1 out & fastballer Justin Grimm (9-0, .85ERA) warming up, the rain came. Grimm got through the Vikings in the 6th popping up Richard Crozier striking out Andrew Stover. Lefty did his part keeping the Bearcat bats silent so Northside could have a chance in the 7th (Taylor Bell threw a hit ball from Right field to Arron on relay where Divers threw out the runner at 3rd for a perfect tag by Zach Hurt during the inning. After Lefty K'ed to begin the 7th, Daniel Motes took a 95 MPH fastball to the helmet. After stealing 2nd, a pickoff attempt by Grimm hit the base Umpire allowing Daniel to go to 3rd. Coach Cool then proved why he is "The Coach", having Roger Ingraham "Squeeze" Daniel home on a perfect SAC pass the 3rd baseman. The 1-1 score carried over to the top of the 8th after Lefty held VA High at bay again. Top of 8th - Taylor Bell went down on strikes, Zach Hurt hit one up the middle & took 2nd on an overthrow into the Bearcat dugout. Aaron Divers was HBP & Richard Crozier walked setting up the match between 95 MPH fastballer & Andrew Stover. Andrew worked Grimm to a full count & got an inside fastball that was hit between 3rd & Short for 2 RBI's & the game - the crowd cheered 3up - 3 down. Congratulations Vikings!

Vikings AA Region III Runner-Up for 2007

Northside ran into a victory hungry Titan team from Hidden Valley in the Championship game Saturday night at Kawanis Field in Salem. Chad Jarrett, Daniel Motes, Matt Slough & Max Barney were all called on to pitch but the Vikings were unable to slow the Titan offense. On the plus side, getting the 1st 2 outs of each inning came easy...it was the 3rd that seemed to hurt the Viking defense as most of the Titan runs were scored with 2 down. The biggest relief of the game was Max Barney striking out Greenway in the top of the 7th to end the threat by the Titans with bases loaded.
For the Vikings on Offense: Aaron Divers had 2 Singles, a Double & scored, Andrew Stover scored, had 2 hits & 1 RBI, Lefty Flora Singled & Doubled in a run...Richard Crozier, Matt Herron & Taylor Bell all had 1 hit with Matt & Daniel Motes getting RBI's.
The Vikings will travel to Bristol Tuesday to face Virginia High who beat Richlands in the Region IV Championship game. Hidden Valley will face Richlands at home, also Tuesday.

On a personal note:
These awards are never fair & there were several Vikings that were overlooked or under recogized in the voting. Daniel, Zach, Lefty, Andrew, Roger, Aaron & other Vikings deserve recogination at a higher level considering the great year that we had in winning the Blue Ridge & qualifing for States for the 2nd year in a row. Coach Cool deserved Coach of the Year for bringing the Vikings to State's again.
We know who the true winners are & a piece of paper will never replace the great memories you all leave at Northside, win or lose. Good Luck in State.

After a weather delay Thursday, the Vikings faced off with the Knights starting in the bottom of the 1st inning. Andrew Stover got the win as he held the Cave Spring offense in check for 5 innings. After giving up 2 walks & a hit to the Knights in the bottom of the 6th, Coach Cool called on Chad Jarrett to close down the threat.
