Florestal: key interception.
The Lakeshore Cougars came within one throw of tying the Alexander Park Roughriders in the dying seconds of the last Saturday morning at Parc des Benevoles in Kirkland.
The Roughriders (3-1) held on to their 22-16 lead and beat the Cougars (2-2) as neither team scored in the second half.
Roughriders safety Brandon Florestal intercepted Lakeshore’s end zone passing attempt intended for Cougars wide receiver Timothy Horner. After making the interception, Florestal scooted out of the Roughriders’ end zone and set up Alexander Park’s offence to run out the clock.
When asked what he needed to win the game, Cougars’ head coach Bill Mitchell replied: “One more minute. This was a great game without any incidents and two teams that both played tremendously. I am very proud of my squad.”
Alexander Park worked their running game with ease during the first half as Evan Wiley scored all three touchdowns and Shawn Steen converted twice.
“We had 20 guys on defence step up and play some hard-nosed football in the second half as the game shifted from an offensive struggle to a defensive battle,” said Alexander Park’s defensive coordinator Terry White.
Lakeshore’s Alexandre Loufti and Matthew Orsini scored the Cougars touchdowns and Cole Larocque converted both kicks after each score to account for Lakeshore’s 16 points.
In the last five minutes of the fourth quarter, Lakeshore had two drives where they worked the ball up field with some great passes and strong running from Orsini. Lakeshore had to make adjustments from the first half and did so by strengthening their blocking game.
In the end, the interception by Florestal made the difference as he stepped up from deep in the end zone to snag down the sailing Lakeshore pass.
“We were expecting a bootleg run [because] Orsini is a powerful running back,” said Alexander head coach JB Wiley. “Our players kept their eyes open for a pass and made the play. This was a great game to watch, play and definitely coach.”

The lights were on, fans cheered in the stands and music blared last Friday night at Riverdale High School in Pierrefonds.
That could only mean one thing: amateur football of the major variety has returned to the West Island. The defending provincial champion Quebec Bantam AAA Football League North Shore Lions made their home debut in a season they hope will result in an unprecedented 29th provincial championship.
With North Shore Football League inter-park minor teams from atom to peewee levels having made their season debuts two weekends ago, only the Quebec Junior Football League North Shore Broncos have yet to hit the field for regular season play. That will change next week though, when the Broncos travel to Ottawa to meet the Riders.
Lions win big
At Riverdale, the always-powerful bantam AAA North Shore Lions improved their record to 2-0 heading into this weekend’s play, thanks to a solid 40-12 win over the St. Léonard Cougars. The win came on the heels of the club’s convincing 38-0 road win over Richelieu A in their season opener on Aug. 11. Quarterback Matt Leblanc — a two-sport athlete who will travel to Windsor Ont. this weekend along with his Lac St. Louis teammates to participate in the Canadian Baseball Championships — has taken over as starting quarterback from Kevin Hillier. He had a fine game on Friday, throwing touchdown passes to Ross Olshansky (also part of the Lac St. Louis provincial baseball team), Richie Elias, Jean-Fritz Charles and Sammy Mesidore while running for a TD himself to lead the Lions. Spencer Karls scored the other Lions TD on a 35-yard run.
“St. Léonard played a terrific game,” said Lions assistant head coach David St. James. “They came out to play football, and actually took a 7-0 lead. That was a wakeup call for us, and the kids responded.”
Mustangs beat Raiders
At Chateauguay, quarterback Kevin Hillier threw a 79-yard touchdown pass to James Crowe on the first play of the game and the huge first quarter that followed proved to be the difference Friday night as the midget AAA North Shore Mustangs kicked off their season with a 21-9 victory over the hometown Raiders.
The Mustangs led 21-3 after the first 15 minutes of play as running back Paul Belair scored a 45-yard touchdown run and Emmanuel Musangu-Kunyima registered a 30-yard run. Placekicker David ‘Tank’ Therien converted all three majors.
The Raiders, who were stung by numerous turnovers, scored their only points on a field goal and an interception return with time running out in the contest.
Despite the win, Mustangs head coach Justin McHugh expressed dissatisfaction at his team’s inability to put together a complete effort.
“This is a young team, and it has to learn how to play 60 minutes of football,” said McHugh. “We had a great first quarter, but our offence stalled after that. Our defence played well, though. I also have to give kudos to wide receiver Jesse Blond who had four catches for 75 yards, and on the defensive side of the ball, Terry Katsihtis, a former receiver we converted into a defensive halfback. He had a strong game, stopping the run and coming through with an interception.”
Cougars dominate second half
At LaSalle, the midget AAA Lakeshore Cougars led 6-5 at the half but dominated the final 30 minutes of play, particularly the third quarter, to coast to a 29-5 victory over the LaSalle Warriors.
“We physically wore them out in the second half,” said Cougars head coach Bob Mironowicz. “We wore down their defensive line and began to run the ball successfully.”
Four Warriors turnovers didn’t help either. Remi Gagnon led the Cougars with a pair of TDs, while Matthew Impellezeri scored on a pass from quarterback Terrence Morsink, and Miles Vergil-Bisaillon on the ground counted for the others.
“The defence played very well,” said Mironowicz. “People like Kyle Baker and Phil Lavalle were making huge contributions. That made the place very quiet, which is just the way you want things to be on the road in LaSalle.”
Bantam Cougars shut out
Elsewhere last weekend, the bantam AAA Lakeshore Cougars saw their record drop to 0-2 following a 25-0 loss to the Châteauguay Raiders on Saturday night.
Inter-park roundup
Meanwhile, in inter-park atom games, the St. Lazare Stallions shut out Ile Bizard 32-0 while Sunnybrooke blanked Westpark 6-0. The Lakeshore Panthers got by Alexander Park 12-6, A Ma Baie defeated the St. Lazare Stallions 26-0 and the Lakeshore Cougars beat the Western Patriots 36-6.
In mosquito play, the St. Lazare Stallions beat Ile Bizard 6-0, the Lakeshore Cougars easily handled the Western Patriots 46-0, Sunnybrooke defeated Westpark 18-12 and Alexander Park thrashed Westpark 32-12.
Finally, in peewee action, St. Lazare clobbered Ile Bizard 36-8, Lakeshore did the same to the Western Patriots 44-0, A Ma Baie beat Alexander Park 48-30 and Westpark came away with a 38-31 victory over Sunnybrooke.
