Soccer is one of the most popular sports in the world! Many countries have a national team. They play in a contest called the World Cup every four years - It is the biggest soccer game on earth!

 


Soccer is called football in practically every country except America, who call 'Grid Iron' football and football soccer.

 


Brazil has the greatest national soccer team in the world! They have won the World Cup 5 times - That is more than any other country!

 


One of the best soccer players ever comes from Brazil - His name is Pele'

 


Second to Brazil, Italy has one of the best teams in the world! They have won the World Cup 4 times.

 


The United States national womens team has won the World Cup twice!

 

United States has more official soccer players than any other nation in the world - almost 18 million. Of these, 78 percent are under the age of 18. In the 1990s, soccer was recognized as the fastest-growing college and high school sport in the US.

 

Mia Hamm, a star forward on the U.S. women's national team, was once a two-time national collegiate player of the year for the University of North Carolina. She was on the 1996 and 2004 Olympic gold medal winning U.S. team as well as the 1999 World Cup team.

 


Children is Africa, Europe , Asia, and Latin America all play soccer to stay in shape, learn teamwork, and have fun!

 


Soccer goalies didn't have to wear different coloured shirts from their teammates until 1913.


The largest attendance for a soccer match ever was 199,854 people - Brazil v. Uruguay in the World Cup at the Maracana Municipal Stadium, Rio de Janeiro, July 1950.

 

In 1950 India withdrew form the World Cup because FIFA refused to let their team play barefoot.
