NorEasters action at NSA States
Leominster, MAAfter winning their first two games Saturday the NorEaster 16Us were just one game away from the winners bracket final on Sunday. But a tough 6-0 loss Sunday morning to the Bay State Brats sent the 16Us to the loser bracket semis where they fell 3-2 to the MA Raiders, eliminating them from the National Softball Association (NSA) State Championships last weekend.
In their final elimination game the NorEasters gave up three unearned runs to the Raiders in the top of the third on an infield throwing error.
The NorEasters answered with a pair in the fourth when Felicia Bua and Ashley Annis hit back-to-back singles with one out. Chelsea Proulxs double to left scored Bua from second and moved Annis to third.
Caitlin Clary followed with a sharply hit ground ball to third where Annis got caught too far off the bag and was tagged out on the base path. Proulx moved to third on the play and scored on a wild pitch, putting the NorEasters down 3-2.
The 16Us threatened again in the sixth when they loaded the bases when Ashley Annis singled between walks to Kate Barnard and Caitlin Clary. A two-out pop fly to second ended the rally.
Proulx took the loss allowing three runs, all unearned on four hits, including three infield singles while walking none and fanning two.
On Saturday the NorEasters defeated the MA Commotion 2-0 and the MA Invasion 3-2 in 11 innings.
Offensively Ashley Annis (4 for 10, .400, 2 RBI, 3 R) and Ally Murphy (3 for 8, .375, 2 RBI) led the 16Us
From the mound Chelsea Proulx pitched 12.2 innings allowing 4 runs, 1 earned for a 0.55 ERA. She allowed 8 hits while fanning 6 and walking 2. Felicia Bua pitched 8 innings giving up 5 runs, 2 earned for a 1.75 ERA while allowing 9 hits and 3 walks and striking out 11.
Kate Barnard pitching 8.1 innings allowing 2 runs, both earned while striking out 3 and walking one.
The 16Us are off until next weekend when they travel to Bow for the Turn Two Tournament.
18Us eliminated in three
Lowell, MALast weekends rain saw Fridays tournament games postponed and rescheduled for Saturday making it a long day for the NorEaster 18Us.
After beating the Hopkinton Curse 1-0, the NorEasters dropped their next two games to the MA Bandits 4-0 and the MA Black Ice 2-1 in eight innings.
What wasnt quiet was catcher Jacqui Feehilys bat. Feehily went on a tear going 4 for 9 in three games with two doubles and a triple.
In their only win on the weekend, the 18Us scored the only run of the game against the Hopkinton Curse in the second. Feehily opened the inning with a double to right-center and scored on shortstop Kara Irwins single to left.
Alyssa Crowell scattered 7 Hopkinton hits while fanning 9 and walking one.
The Bandits sent the 18Us to the losers bracket when they scored the only run they would need in the bottom of the first on an infield error. Ashley Pinkham took the loss allowing four runs, three earned on 10 hits while striking out 8.
In their third day of the game, the NorEasters were eliminated by the MA Black Ice in an 8-inning extra inning affair that saw the 18Us tie the game at one in the top of the seventh.
Down 1-0, Kara Marvelli tied the game when she reached base on a fielders choice and eventually scored on a single up the middle by Alyssa Crowell.
But the Black Ice answered with the game winner in the bottom of the eighth when they drew a bases loaded walk off Crowell who was pitching her second game of the day.
Coach Harry Blood was encouraged by the improvement on the weekend. The pitching staff allowed just 5 runs, 3 earned in 22 innings for a team 0.95 ERA. We only gave up three earned runs all weekend so our defense and pitching are fine. We just need to give our pitchers some help by scoring a few more runs, said Blood.
The 18Us travel to Waterbury, CT this weekend for the CT Rapids PONY National Qualifier.
14Us drop three games
Dracut, MAThe NorEaster 14Us dropped all three games in the NSA States last weekend losing to the MA Nightmares 5-3, the MA Dynamites 12-0 and the MA Thunder Red 9-6.
In their elimination game against the Thunder Red, the 14Us found themselves down 4-0 in the early going when the Thunder Red scored 1 run in the first and 3 in the top of the third.
The NorEasters battled back in the bottom of the third, scoring 3 runs on a single by Erin Hill and a triple by Curran Hubbard.
But the Thunder Red answered with three more runs in the top of the fourth and never looked back.
The 14Us are off until next weekend when they travel to Bow for the Turn Two Tournament.
