2002--14U's Win 1 of 3 at Scarborough
Scarborough, ME—The Nor’Easter 14U’s were eliminated in the first round of single-elimination play on Sunday at the Southern Maine Diamond Challenge, when the Capital Mainiacs of Augusta, ME defeated the Nor’Easters 10-3. The Mainiacs scored 8 runs, two earned, on a two-out rally in the first inning before Nor’Easter reliever Felicia Bua retired the only batter she faced in the first.
Bua held the Mainiacs to just two runs over the next four innings on 2 hits, while walking one and striking out one. But the damage was done and the team was never able to make-up the first inning deficit.
The Nor’Easters scored three times, once in the second on a two-run single to right by Chelsea Proulx, scoring Ava Seidensticker and Abbie Croft who had both singled, and later in the fourth, when Ashley Annis singled up the middle, scoring Steph Cross who had earlier drawn a walk.
The Nor’Easters threatened one more time in the fifth, loading the bases with two outs, but the rally was thwarted when Melissa Huntoon hit a line shot right to the Mainiac second basemen.
On Saturday, the Nor’Easters split on the day in rain-shortened pool play action. The Scarborough Flame, Maine’s 2001 defending state champion, had little trouble with the Nor’Easters handing the 14U’s a 9-1 defeat. Later the Nor’Easters had their best showing of the weekend, defeating the Mass Firecrackers 2-0.
In their loss to the Flame, Nor’Easter starter Felicia Bua, struggled in the rain before being relieved by Chelsea Proulx, who pitched three scoreless innings. The potent Flame offense put the game out of reach when they scored three runs off Proulx in the sixth.
Megan Fadden and Steph Cross had the only hits of the game, while Kaitlin Hamberger made two outstanding catches in center field.
Against the Mass Firecrackers, Erin Wheeler (one inning) and Chelsea Proulx (5 innings) combined for the 2-0 shutout. Proulx scattered 5 hits while walking one and fanning two. The Nor’Easters were flawless in the field.
The game winner came in the second frame when Michele Kelley drew a walk and reached second on a passed ball. Kelley reached third when Ava Seidensticker grounded out and later scored on a sacrifice bunt by Erin Wheeler.
The Nor’Easters scored their second run in the third when Chelsea Proulx tripled and scored on a passed ball.
Overall Coach Trish LeMien was pleased with her team’s effort. LeMien said her team gained valuable experience playing some really strong teams. “I was pleased with our progress this weekend. We showed we could play with some talented teams, but at the same time we have a lot to work on.”
LeMien has two weeks to prepare her team for the NH-ASA 14U State Tournament to be held July 5-7 at Roger Allen Park in Rochester, NH. The Nor’Easters have one more tournament before the states when they host their own tournament on Saturday and Sunday at Gilford High School.

2002--16U's fall at Southern Maine Diamond Classic
Nor’Easters 16U Fall in Scarborough
By Dick Dumais

Scarborough, ME—The Granite State Cobras was the one team Nor’Easter 16U Head Coach Jeff Crowell didn’t want to play this weekend at the Southern Maine Diamond Challenge; especially since the two teams are scheduled to play against each other in the opening round of next weekend’s NH-ASA JO 16U Tournament in Keene.
Crowell now has the week to prepare his team to avenge a 7-5 loss at the hand of the Cobras, who eliminated the Nor’Easters from the quarterfinals of Sunday’s single-elimination play in Scarborough.
The Cobras pecked away at an early 5-0 Nor’Easter lead, tying the game in the fifth and scoring two more in the top of the sixth for the win. A Nor’Easter two-out rally failed in the bottom of the sixth when DH Michele Baca hit a sharp line drive to right that was stabbed by N.Deschenes to end the game. The game was shortened to six innings due to the 1:30 time limit.
It looked like the Nor’Easters had the game under control in the early going when the offense exploded for five runs in the third. Alyssa Crowell opened the inning with a single to center and later scored with two outs when Krista Konrad reached first on an infield hit. Both Konrad and Michele Baca, who had reached first on a walk, scored when Amanda Hackett reached base on a dropped ball in the outfield.
Rachel Mercer then belted a double to left scoring Kara Irwin who pinch ran for Hackett. Mercer later scored when Jacqui Fehilly smacked a triple over the left fielder’s head.
Michele Baca, soreness in her shoulder, was scratched as the starting pitcher twenty minutes before game time and was replaced by Ali Dumais.
Dumais had held the Cobras at bay scattering three hits and one walk over three innings. The Cobras managed two runs in the fourth off Dumais when the first two batters reached on a walk and single to center and the Nor’Easter defense had some lapses in the field.
With the score at 5-2 in the fifth, Alyssa Crowell relieved Dumais after allowing a leadoff single to left. But the Cobras potent offense belted back-to-back singles off Crowell and when the dust settled the game was notched at five.
An infield error in the top of the sixth was just the opening the Cobras needed to win the game. With two outs, S.Draper singled the go ahead run home, giving the Cobras the lead for good.
Crowell took the loss in relief allowing 4 runs, 3 earned, on 4 hits while fanning 4 and walking one. Dumais allowed 3 runs all earned, on 6 hits while striking out 6 and walking three.
In rain shortened pool play action, the Nor’Easters won both games, defeating Saco, Me Friday night 6-2 and Dover, NH Saturday afternoon 7-1. The Nor’Easters game vs. the Bay State Bandits was rained out.
Crowell led the pitching staff on the weekend, going 2-1 allowing 6 runs, 3 earned on 8 hits. Crowell walked 1 batter and struck out 12 in thirteen innings.
The Nor’Easters will battle the Cobras Friday at 6 pm at Hanna Field in Keene in the NH-ASA State Tournament.

2003--14U's Gearing Up for 2003 Season
Believe it or not, we are getting closer to the summer softball season.

The Nor’Easter 14U Softball Club is scheduled to play in five (possibly six) tournaments this summer.

June 6-8            Hudson "Just Play It"
June 21-22           Scarborough
June 27-29           NH ASA State Tournament (Keene)
July 11-13           New England Regionals, Rhode Island (must qualify)
July 18-20           Bow Turn-Two, Bow, NH
July 25-27           Nor'Easter Classic (14U, 16U, 18U)

We will not be playing in any Friday evening games at Scarborough this year, however you should plan on an early game on Saturday. We will be playing three games Saturday, if the rain doesn’t hit again!

Moving the 14U Nor’Easter Classic to late July is one of the major changes for this summer. We already have twenty teams registered for this year’s Nor’Easter Classic Tournament (five in the 14U bracket) to be held on July 25-27 in Laconia and Gilford. This tournament is one of two major fundraisers for the organization. These fundraisers help keep costs down and allow the organization to purchase equipment, uniforms (look for new uniforms this summer) and registration fees for tournaments. Look for details on how you can help with the tournament in the near future. Information about the tournament and other Nor’Easter Softball News can be found on the Nor’Easter website at www.eteamz.com/noreastersoftball .

Just a reminder, the remainder of the player fee ($240) will be due by June 1, 2003. We’ll be sending more forms to complete prior to the season in the near future.

We look forward to an exciting summer of softball! Please call Dick Dumais if you have any questions about this summer’s program (528-4295).

Have a fun spring season of school softball!

Sincerely,
Nor’Easter Softball Club

2003--14U's fall in Semis, 16U's in quarters at Scarborough
Scarborough, ME—It was inevitable that the Nor’Easter 14U’s and the Bay State Brats would meet at some point in this weekend’s Southern Maine Flame Diamond Softball Tournament. Both teams went undefeated in pool play on Friday and Saturday, easily defeating their opponents and playing near flawless ball. But when these two teams finally met in the semi-finals, it would be an errant infield throw that would send the Nor’Easters home for the weekend, losing to the Methuen, Mass. Bay State Brats 2-0.

On a special note, 14U assistant coach Dan Geoffrey surprised head coach Trish LeMien and the entire Nor’Easter organization by proposing to her Saturday evening before players and parents at a special gathering of both 14U and 16U teams.

MONTREAL, Canada — What a difference a year makes. Last year the Nor’Easter’s came home from the Montreal Cooper International Softball Tournament with just one win in five games. This year’s 16U squad proved they could compete with some of the best teams across the country, making it to the final 16 of a field of 28 teams, before losing to the tournament’s eventual winner, the Buffalo NY Lightning 9-2 Saturday evening.
